Drawing in a loyal stream of customers looking to break up the long (I'm sure it used to feel it at the time) slog from the student accommodation on Burley Road up to University with a pit stop for a cheap sandwich or greasy fry-up, PJ's knows where its strengths lie. Resisting temptation to jazz up its menu with deli counter ingredients or pricey full meals, this takeaway instead sticks to its tried and tested formula of fish and chips, sandwiches and breakfasts, and does very well in the process. I had the breakfast a few times back in my meat eating days and it certainly did the job - generous, greasy and cheap - and I've more recently grabbed a few sandwiches on the go that fitted into the same category: filling, quick and cheap food that's not going to win any awards but is perfectly palatable nonetheless. Don't go at lunch time if you're feeling hungry - the sudden influx of students from the nearby College mean queues often stretch out the door. read more
