I have graced this place on occasion with that good old yearn for chips that everyone knows. The fish is average but they do really good scallops and their chicken is much nicer than most of the takeaways in the area i.e not dry, and with a good amount of actual meat as opposed to the skinny little bits you can get at some of the neighboring places. They also offer scraps for free and have an array of condiments to suit your rumbling tummy needs. They also have a TV if you have to wait a bit, but unfortunately there's nowhere to sit down. As far as price goes they're cheap as chips, wahey! And they also do free delivery if you can't quite muster up the courage to get down there in this chilly weather.

I honestly think, that in this particular area, it is the best fish and chip shop. It not far from the pubs, but avoids the centre of takeaway central on Queens Road. The fish is good and the chips and scraps are a real treat, and not too far from many student properties, meaning I used to nip out for 5 to pick up some food. Oh, how my life has changed in a year. The also sell burgers and pies and a vast selection of sauce. Speaking of sauce..It is tiny in there and I have fond memories of squeezing in there once with my mates... One of them managed to pour sauce EVERYWHERE. Understandably, the man behind the counter was not pleased, but hey, I give him full respect for biting his tongue.

Given the choice was this, or Zainus, in the immediate vicinity, I chose fish and chips. The chap serving was rather friendly, and let me take my time perusing the menu. Didn't spot what variety of fish this got me, assuming haddock, although I struggle to tell. Didn't seem as fluffy as cod. I sat to await my order, and it took about 10 minutes, but it was cooked freshly. I'd ordered a pot of curry sauce and a rubicon to accompany this, but it was only when I was all the way to Hyde Park that I remembered he'd not passed on my drink! Boo indeed. Also, I'd ordered curry sauce, and he gave me gravy. Now, this mess up is obviously disappointing. He wasn't busy (I was the only one in) and it was a very simple order. But, hey. Mistakes are made. My forgiveness has also been increased a whole star for one important reason: this gravy was ruddy gorgeous. The fish and chips seemed to improve in flavour after cooling some, where they began a little bland, the became more flavoursome after about 10 minutes. The batter, though freshly done, was still a little too greasy and soggy in places for me to fully enjoy. The chips aren't those standard fluffly fall apart chips you hope for from a chippy, but they are good. However, this gravy. It made everything in my mouth very, very happy. One touch of gravy from here and all sadness is defeated. Yum. So that's the deal. Cheap, not as good as some chippies, but get the gravy and you're a winner.

Because of this, and the fact that it was jammed full of locals and students when I went in, I assumed it would be something special. Unfortunately, perhaps due to the Friday night rush of business, I was left slightly disappointed - I ordered just chips and scraps, and was served rather slowly for such a simple order. He went for the fish, which looked and smelt delicious, and I went for chips and a battered sausage. In fairness this is more appropriate for an evening meal really than a small lunch but we were hungry and it was a one off. The staff in there were excellent, serving us quickly and cheerfully. I had a pt of curry sauce with mine and the whole thing was so wrong it was right. Delicious batter, gorgeous chips and brilliant curry sauce! I would recommend you stop by sometime and sample! Perhaps not advisable to make it a regular thing though, it's not the healthiest way to live...

So many places in Leeds sell fish and chips and so many commit a big massive FAIL. Not Arkwrights though, they know exactly what they're doing. The fish is really tasty and the batter is not at all soggy, the chips are gorgeous, a little bit crispy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside (cue stomach growling) and the curry sauce is so flavorsome and more-ish it'll leave you licking your paper wrapper. Although they do close quite early, the pub next door allows you to bring your purchase inside so you can have it with a pint! Sorted.

Harrumph…read more I am rather unhealthily going through a fish and chip craving phase at the moment and this means I've had fish and chips for tea once a week for the last three weeks. I know it's bad but I also eat salads and boring good-for-me-stuff sometimes too. Why the harrumph? Because everyone at work's been banging on about this Nash's and how I should try it because my last Nash's experience (with the one in Chapel Apple) wasn't up to much in my opinion, and so I badgered Hot Steve into Orange Wednesdaying it in town and thought 'Nash's is only down the road, let's go there!'. And I went online and there was a 2-4-1 offer just about to run out so I was all like 'it's fate! We get to try Nash's and get it a bit cheaper AND get cheaper cinema tickets!' and it was all great. I should have realised when I met Steve there and he told me the queue had been so long at the cinema that by the time he got to the till his phone battery had died and he had to pay for two tickets that it wasn't going to go as swimmingly as I'd hoped. Our waitress wasn't exactly surly, just not overly friendly. I gave her my voucher as instructed, and we knew already that the offer only applied to the haddock and chips meal, which was fine, because the menu said it included bread and butter and peas, nommy. I was even allowed brown bread to make it a tiny bit better for me. And then our meals arrived in a beautiful halo of light and golden batter and perfectly cooked (for me) chips. And homemade tartare sauce with dill in it, and a wedge of lemon, and a parsley sprig, and... no peas. I thought the waiter was fetching us some but he wasn't. I asked him where our peas were and he told us they weren't included in the offer. Apparently peas are excluded. He offered to add some onto the bill and get some for us but it sort of defeated the purpose so we said no (although I regretted it instantly). I couldn't check the voucher because I'd given it to the waitress, which made me think perhaps that's a sneaky tactic they use - hand in voucher when ordering, then get something other than you ordered. Clever. Anyway. As light as the batter was, there was too much of it. I left a lot. And there were a lot of bones in my fish. Which I've never noticed before. And it took ten minutes of waiting for our finished plates to be cleared away before I got fed up and did that 'can we have the bill please?' gesture at the waiter (who incidentally wasn't busy or anything, there were only 5 covers in - he was just stood next to the bar with the waitress). We didn't tip and instead went next door to Lounge for a beer to mull over our disappointing Nash's experience. Sigh. And harrumph.

While someone who doesn't eat fish probably isn't the best person to review a fish and chip…read morerestaurant, the spasms of delight that this place seems to send my fish-eating friends into seem to indicate that it's rather good. Set in an old, oak-beamed building Nash's is a step up from your average chippy, something which is reflecting in the menu, replete with wonderfully Seventies-sounding delights such as Melon and Pink Grapefruit Cocktail and Lobster Bisque flamed with Cognac. The takeaway menu is a more reserved affair, featuring a typical selection of butties, pies and battered goods, and prices range from a reasonable £1.30 for a takeaway portion of deliciously fat, salty chips to £14.95 for grilled lemon sole in the restaurant. I can only vouch for the tastiness of the chips and the quiche - the solitary vegetarian option - but I am assured the fish is as fresh and tasty as any you'd find in a seaside resort. As an added bonus, all the fish is hook and line caught from sustainable sources.

I was not even aware of Brett's presence until a few years back when a friend suggested we should…read morego in after watching a cricket match at Headingley stadium. Before visiting Brett's, I had been satisfied with the other two standard Headingley chippies, Midgley's and Bryan's (both excellent) but, as I realised on my first visit, Brett's outshines both. There are many, many reasons for this; firstly, it just feels like a chippy - always a long queue of cold Leodensians dying for something warm and fattening, staff who yell orders to each other and have aprons covered in chip fat, and a couple of rickety sheltered benches just outside the shop for those who can't wait until they get home. On top of this, the setting (inside an old, ivy-covered terraced house on North Lane) makes Brett's both quaint and perfectly located in equal measure. Whether you've been at the cricket, the rugby, or just on a ten hour drinking binge, Brett's is always a welcome sight. But it is the food, of course, which makes the biggest difference. Rumour has it that the reason that Brett's batter tastes crispier than anywhere else is down to the use of beef fat, rather than vegetable oil - a stroke of genius I'm sure you'd agree (as well as making the food taste better, it also means there are no vegetarians ahead of you in the queue!). The cod and haddock itself tastes and feels fresher than any other Leeds fishery I have stumbled upon, and the chips are just glorious. Go to Brett's. Go now.

The is nowhere else you can sit and eat a takeaway or sit down and have a meal in a 1930's oak paneled surrounding! Bretts ivy covered restaurant really does stand out from businesses such as Lucky's and Gangster's takeaway on the same road with very contrasting, modern exterior. Bretts has many famous specials (as well as their gorgeous, traditional fish and chips...very scrummy) such as Lincolshire Maris Piper potatoes and Icelandic Haddock. Bretts has put a classy twist on a meal that has been branded in modern society as a dirty, greasy takeaway. You can eat a well presented, fish meal in Bretts restaurant with a lovely bottle of wine off the extensive wine list! Due to it's location Brett's is often frequented by cricket media and fans!!!
