Oakwood

A great spot in Roundhay / Oakwood with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. So far I've only…read morebeen around lunchtime, and the menu is huge and varied. Most sandwiches sit in the £4 - £5 range, with a choice of ciabatta or baguette. It's worth going for a baguette, as there's a pretty noticeable size different - if you're paying that much then you may as well get something substantial! Although the food is really tasty and made fresh to order, it's a little disappointing that nothing I've ordered so far seems to come with the option of salad. Everything I've had so far has been grilled meat with cheese - undeniably tasty, but missing something. Even things like chutney or relish have been used sparingly, so I'd expect a little extra something for that £5. I haven't yet eaten in, but everything is available for takeaway. The takeaway bags aren't big enough for the baguettes and are made of thin paper, so if you're driving back to the office with a sandwich you'll need something else to put it in, or end up with greasy seats! Minor flaws, but at these prices it can feel a bit rough. Even cheap places like Deli Chez have decent bags and the option to add salad, more sauce etc. That said, the food is really tasty and the sandwiches are well filled!

I felt a little sorry for the lady behind the counter because she was rushed off her feet but she still ran around responding to sundry demands with a smile. The point is, I really liked this place. it has a great menu which isn't wallet straining and they also do special offers on their web site. I'm pretty sure that the menu would contain something for everyone unless you are taking a confirmed cannibal out for a bite (normally I'd make a crack about tasty staff here but I'm a reformed character). As for the coffee, well you'd have to be a tea drinker to not appreciate it. My latte was smooth and frothy and delicious all the way. Even if you are just on a flying visit it's worth trying the lovely brownie.

The girls who run the counter now are just as helpful and know how to make a damn good sandwich. I would NOT go anywhere else, everything is transparent so you know what goes in and how much and it more of a feast in an oven bottom. The secret is finding a place like this and sticking with it, as always the ham off the bone is amazing, I hope this shop never closes in my lifetime

They were glorious and homemade but sadly, the original owner & the pie maker died so they were then bought in. Still good quality but didn't have that 'persoanl touch'. This is a great place for a tasty breakfast sandwich, very good basic ingredients served usually on their well known 'oven bottom cakes' The ham/chicken/beef/turkey is carved off the joint with every order for a sandwich. All the other ingredients are presented in the glass chiller in front of you so you can clearly see what you are getting. They are in no way mean on the fillings either! My particular favourite is potted beef and their wonderfully creamy coleslaw! Magic. Had been a great hangover cure in my time!!! They also sell the meat, breadcakes, coleslaw, potted beef and some other things as part of a grocery shop and they do a good selection of hot and cold beverages. Pasta dishes and boxed salads also feature in their offerings and jacket potatoes. The place is spotlessly clean and everything is done in front of you. This place has been a feature of Harehills Parade for a lot of years and everyone locally knows of the place- if you are ever in the area definitely try a sandwich!

Headingley

If you're looking for choice, Tasty is a surefire bet when it comes to sandwiches in Headingley. As…read moresoon as you enter the modest downstairs area you can see the huge board of options laid out before you, and a list of 10 special named choices that I presume are their recommendations. As I entered the shop there was already a bit of a queue but it seemed to be swift moving and they had about four staff members on so it was all looking good. I opted for the mozzarella, basil pesto and tomato panini and asked for chorizo as an extra. It came to £4.10 with the added chorizo, which is a little pricier than expected, but still comes under the "lunch for under a fiver" bracket! Whilst I was waiting I noticed some rather intriguing milkshake drinks, so I'm thinking I may have to treat myself next time I'm in. The panini took about five minutes plus to arrive, which was not a problem as I had a nice seat to sit in whilst I waited. You can opt to eat in, upstairs and peruse the free wifi if so inclined, but on this occasion I wasn't stopping. The staff were lovely and friendly and the service was really swift given the volume of orders that were coming in. My sandwich was really delicious, a generous amount of melted mozzarella was the real highlight, but my only complaint was that the tomato made the bread a little too soggy to eat in places. Just something to consider for next time!

They pride themselves on using fresh, healthy ingredients to create unique sandwiches, and they succeed for the most part. You can order by phone, online or simply go in and pick your sarnie up. Or, if you've got too much time on your hands (like I did) go and eat your sandwich in the lounge area upstairs and take advantage of the free wifi. You'd think that such a place would perhaps be on the upper end of the pricing spectrum, but there are no such issues - the most you'll pay for a footlong sub (just one of the many choices of bread) is £3.50. One final point - though it brands itself as a fresh, healthy, classy sandwich shop, its best offering is undoubtedly the down-to-earth and shamelessly unhealthy cheese-dog. Mmm.

The deli section sells a full menu of sandwiches, soups, cakes and a delicious selection of hot specials. I had a very tasty red Thai curry with jasmine rice just recently. There is a seating area both inside and outdoors to eat at. They serve a lifesaving full English breakfast at a reasonable price, and can be responsible for reactivating your brain, following a night out. The other side of Yum Yum is a convenience store, selling fresh fruit and vegetables, pastries, tinned goods, various snacks and a range of wines and beers. They are significantly overpriced, but that is the cost of convenience. I also think their nearby rival Simpsons stock a far better range of products. All in all, it is a useful place to have around, but there are superior alternatives in the area.

The saviour of so many lunchtimes has been Yum's. They never fail to have something interesting on offer. There are usually several hot options such as pasta bake, burritos and a roast pork baguettes and a couple of really good sandwich specials. Highlights for me have included pulled pork with salad and chipotle mayo and ham, smoked cheese and onion marmalade both on sourdough baguettes. The footling hotdog was also a touch. You can also have your own sandwich made, they have loads of filling options and the cakes look awesome- its like subway if subway sold proper food! They do a large range of American sweets and drinks although every other shop in Leeds seems to offer these now. Yum's also have a massive selection of beers and I believe they open for dinner in the evenings doing pizza etc, if I lived at brewery wharf I wouldn't need to go anywhere else! They are a little expensive when you consider a meal deal at Sainsbury's is three quid but what you get is vastly superior. One of their daily special sandwiches and a can of coke will set you back about a fiver which is pretty good as you'll get something really tasty you will actually enjoy!
