Strung racquet

Hitting your tennis serves too long? Missing bounce overheads going beyond the baseline? Punch half volleys going too deep? Time for new racquet strings! Joined Sunnyvale Tennis Club in 1981, probably before you were born, and had my Prince Thundersticks and Prince Triple Threat RIP 110 strung at Las Palmas for the next two decades. It was pretty much touch and go, with the string tension not consistent from job to job, depending on who was doing it, and the cost upwards to $40. Fast forward to a new century.  Through word of mouth I heard of Sang Kim's Quick Racket Restringing Service at 439 South Kiely Blvd.  Now, once every three months I bring in my racket to be restrung with Prince Blend 16 gauge strings at 63 lbs pressure for my Prince EXO Silver 110 racket.   I hit most of my ground strokes flat in doubles, with a backhand slice, and so don't wear out or break my strings like top spinners.  After 3 months I've lost about 5  lbs of tension and start hitting routine shots long, and hitting first serves too long -time for restringing!   I call up Sang at 408-655-0156 after work on a weekday, and ask him if he has my string in stock, and if so, if he can get it done in half an hour.  If so, down I come from Mountain View, on 85 south and then 280 south, exiting at Saratoga, and making a left turn onto Saratoga, and then a right turn onto Kiely into the strip mall at the corner.   Sang is in the Pure Water store, with hours Tuesday-Saturday 9am-7pm (closes 6pm Sat) .  Standard price is $12 for restringing with a 4 hour turnaround time. But that's for weekend players who still play with the junky cheap racquet strings that came with the original racquet, and only bring in the racquets when they mishit and break a string on very top or very bottom of the string pattern, or totally wear down the strings through continual topspin shots. The Club players come here and pay top prices for top quality strings. Sang charges me $25 for my restringing, as it requires two different sets of string, one for horizontal, and one for vertical, and is on the newer racquet designs, with air vents in the frame.  It would cost $40+ at Las Palmas or Cuesta.  On a weekday, I came in at 1025pm, and he was done by 11am.  Extra $2 for a rush job. Cash only.     The store also has some ancient rackets, like the Prince Warrior from the previous century, hanging on the wall for sale, but I only use this place for restringing. He's also open on Saturdays, but is hopeless swamped with tennis string jobs. Light 9 ounce racquets strung at high tension not for tennis novices! My wife tried using my racquets and got tennis elbow after half an hour of play. In the past I've also passed the time waiting by getting a hair cut next door for $12.  Getting clipped both at the restringing shop and hair shop at the same time. If you know of any place that sells a Prince EXO Silver 110 racket, send me a Yelp message! Tennis companies bring out new models every year, and the new racquets with air vents in the frame have a shorter life expectancy than the older racquets .  With the new strings, I should not be missing my headhunting overheads at my ex across the net! Oh, I forgot, she retired from tennis, after getting too many fuzz sandwiches from my overheads!

Badminton racket stringing. Got at least 3 places where strings overlapping each other outside the frame. Very bad stringing quality.

My first time here, super quick turn around (30mins), low key, fair price, and simple.

They have a deep understanding of how to nurture young athletes, making it easy for kids to grasp the fundamentals while also fostering a competitive mindset that builds self-confidence, mental toughness & the motivation to keep get better. My son started playing orange ball tennis at this academy during the COVID lockdown, when most other extracurricular activities were suspended for an extended period. At the time, I was simply grateful for the physical activity and mental benefits he gained from being outdoors, playing a sport that he enjoyed. As he progressed, he had the opportunity to participate in Junior Team Tennis (JTT), where he played alongside other junior players and developed his match play in a supportive environment while being supervised by the coaches. As his strokes became more consistent and refined, his training evolved beyond just how to hit the ball to understanding why--helping him construct points strategically, play aggressively with heavy topspin while managing risks, and make smart decisions under pressure. The level of individual attention and feedback he received was instrumental in his development. Coach Tom and his team (Daniel, Kyle, Gaby, Fernando & others) were always approachable and highly supportive, guiding him through challenges in a positive environment while sharing valuable insights from other top players. With continued training and experience, his progress accelerated, and before long, he became a top-ranked junior player in NorCal, competing in high-level tournaments across the country. As a parent, I deeply appreciate that Coach Tom emphasizes hard work, sportsmanship, and resilience--qualities that extend far beyond the court and shape kids into not just stronger athletes but also well-rounded individuals and future leaders. Their track record speaks for itself: they have produced many top-ranked junior players at the state and national levels, won the 2024 USTA award for the best junior program in NorCal, and consistently dominate JTT leagues. I highly recommend NorCal Tennis Academy to any family looking for a world-class junior tennis program that truly invests in their players' growth and success.

Before the game, the only thing I was hearing from all the coaches in Lifetime Activities was, they are the strongest among all the teams in the league. My experience when I saw the NorCal Orange team was nothing different than what I heard from coaches over here. And they beat our team badly on the fist match. Few things why they beat our team was about their consistency, rally and lot of rally.... Other than that, I don't think I could see anything fancy on those players. Next day I took help from a known coach who was working for NorCal tennis academy, and put a trial class for my son. First time that day I spoke to Coach Thomas about my son's feedback and trust me it was not good as a parent at all. Because right on my face he told, "he is not ready for yellow, he need to get trained more on green dot before we try him in yellow ball group". I was upset but excited to see how he will work with my son. This was around 2years back when I came to NorCal academy, back then and now, its a big difference and improvement on my sons technique and foot work. Now he just turned 10 but he is getting trained with high school group kids those are really high UTR players. The biggest point why I am with NorCal and wanted to be with NorCal is, they have something unique on their program which I have never seen anywhere before. 1. They don't care who the kid is or they know kid before or not. For them every kid is a tennis player and they wanted to help them. 2. They recognize the talent based on players effort and commitment on the court and put their extra effort to excel his game to the next level. Thats the best thing I have ever seen in any academy till date. - Coach Thomas watches each and every Kid personally to improve the kids game and explains to the parents about the improvement areas. - I have seen him always moving around with different courts to watch whether any one need extra help. 3. The culture is really family oriented and all the coaches are really fun loving. But they can switch the gear anytime, if you as a player wanted to mess around with the coach :) I would really recommend NorCal tennis academy if at all you are looking for a place for your kid or yourself where you only wanted tennis, tennis and tennis.... This is the place to go...
