So it was a no-brainer for us to celebrate the birthday of one of us at Casa Roces. It definitely feels like an elegant ancestral house, especially the second floor, which we took an informal tour of too, through the help of the staff. The furniture and decor took us back in time. Later, I found out that the tables and chairs on the second floor are still used for meetings, one room of which is P-Noy's usual meeting room. The garden patio and the dining area of the restaurant are especially beautiful and romantic at night, when they are bathed in a soft yellow glow from the lights. I ordered the mushroom pasta, delicious and filling, with the serving just a little more than enough for one. The smoky and fresh flavor of the roasted tomato soup is also a winner. Being a pesca-vegetarian, I didn't get to taste the lengua, which is the restaurant's bestseller, and which friends attest to. We surprised the birthday celebrant with Casa Roces' best-selling chocolate caramel cake.

It helps that they are next door to my favorite antique house 'Silahis'. We love the food. I think they make the best Pinoy food in town. It is coming home to a nice meal. Through the years, we met Jeff. Jeff always makes us feel welcome -like family. He is friendly, warm, sincere and professional. He is attentive. The right mix that comes out authentic. Not overwhelming . Not forced. Not chatty. I like that. He is calm. He knows how to serve. And he always has a smile inspite the hours and low wages. I can say that for the rest of the staff too from the young lady at the front desk and the folks at the coffee shop. It is good to see older staff too. Illustrado's food and service makes driving all the way from Paranaque worthwhile. Mayee Paranaque City

Nothing earth shaking in terms of flavors, but everything tasted familiar - the way it should. I love this place for that. I'm not a big fan of fusion and deconstructed food dishes. We specifically loved their gambas, kare-kare, roast pork, leche flan. Apart from the good comfort food, what will make me return again and again to this place are the staff and the ambiance. - the staff - some of them have been with the Legarda family since tita Moning was alive. There was even a brochure write-up introducing all the staff to the guests. I love how the owner is goving much credit and appreciation to the staff. As a result, the staff were really very warm towards the guests. It wasn't just professional courtesy. I could feel that their service came from the heart (especially Tining). - the ambiance - too often, old ancestral houses converted to restaurants end up just being a shell structure of the house with a restaurant inside. This isn't so for La Cocina. One could still feel the heart and soul of the home as it once housed the Legarda family. It wasn't a restaurant in a shell structure of an old house. It was a restaurant in a home. At the end of the meal, it felt like we had eaten at our lola's house not in just any other restaurant.

The restaurant-cum-ancestral house offers patrons a dining experience like no other. To start things off, you are given a tour of the mansion and told tidbits and stories pertaining to the Legarda family. The tour starts in the first floor and you gradually make your way up where you'll eventually be led to the dining area. Describing it as extravagant and exquisite is putting it mildly. There are rose petals strewn about the length of your table. There are literal bells you can pick up and ring to get the attention of the help. The whole experience is surreal. The food itself isn't bad. It's obviously inclined towards Spanish fare given the Legarda family's heritage. It's not the best though. Paying a visit to La Cocina De Tita Moning is something I'd recommend. Not for the food, but for the whole experience involved as a whole.

We're…read morerice-loving folk and probably one of the best Spanish contributions in our culture is the paella! Calderon is just one of the best in the Metro! One of four restaurants along F. Calderon Street, Calderon is the last restaurant along the street huddled with the likes of Tori Box, Le Creperie and 67 Nathan Pub. When we ate there, it was already our third attempt to try and squeeze in the many folk who would like their taste of Calderon's paellas and tapas. The place is very small like the other three restaurants in F. Calderon. The place gets easily full especially during peak hours. Their menu is in Spanish so it was good practise for someone like me who's learning how to be fluent in it. For those who aren't well-versed in the language, don't worry. They have descriptions below each menu item. We ordered Paella Negra in pequeña (small, P780), Salpicao (P450), Bandeja de Jamón, Chorizo Y Quezo (P620) and Lengua Con Setas (P580). I think our friends and I agreed about how much we love their food. From their paella specialty, to their tapas and especialidades. During the night we dined at Calderon, there was an acoustic set for the guests. It was very intimate because the space wasn't that big. It wasn't too in your face either. It blended so well with the Spanish interiors and ambience of the place. If I ever needed another dish of Paella Negra, I would most certainly come back! Porque necesito en mi vidaaaa!

BANANA-RHUMA/FILIPINO TURON YUMMINESS!!…read more FYI... current Yelp address (as of July 2026) is INCORRECT for the Manila branch! They apparently moved 2 years ago to expand the dining area. Current Manila location is: 1104 J. Barlin Street, Sampaloc, Manila 1108 Metro Manila, Philippines Turon is a Filipino dessert or snack, that is absolutely delicious! If I could, I'd eat it constantly! Brekkie, lunch, dinner and anytime in between LOL! Ripe Banana wrapped in a crispy thin Filipino lumpia (egg roll) wrapper is the basic premise. Every Filipino has their preference on what the perfect turon should be like. Mine? That would be an overripe Banana with a sliver of ripe jackfruit wrapped in super thin lumpia wrapper, deep fried and then lightly carmelized. BOOM! Taste Bud Heaven! Why would you come to Mang Tootz? Our Grab Driver didn't even know what this restaurant was, but their version of the Filipino Turon, Banana-Rhuma, is a YouTube sensation! When you do a YouTube search for "Turon Manila," a large part of that search is about Mang Tootz! So I wanted to claim it! Once we got the directions straight (found correct address on their Facebook page) it was an easy find. Good for drop offs, no street parking unfortunately. Friendly staff, lots of options for turo-turo. but I'm only here for one thing! Ok, let's eat! BANANA-RHUMA: Mang Tootz version of Filipino turon is smaller than what I'm use to in the USA. More a finger length size here rather than the hand length (or bigger) that is typical in California. We got our order fresh & hot and taste & flavor wise, it is DEELISH! NapakaSARAP! Thin lumpia wrapper is golden crispy with every piece. Love the caramelization with sesame seeds! Nicely ripened Banana and jackfruit inside is perfectly portioned for its size. No complaints here, worth a GRAB drive to enjoy! This was deliciously crafted. :) VERY EASY RECOMMENDATION! I did enjoy this style of Filipino Turon very much. My Bunso prefers more banana, so... to each his own! More for me!!! I would definitely make a return visit! Enjoy!
