Ever since I read this particularly interesting guide on Spanish cuisine and appetizers, I have been intrigued to try and look for the best tapas place in the metro. I like exploring unfamiliar food, and tapas is definitely one of those exotic and excitingly foreign food that I have yet to fully appreciate and understand, but places like Casa Armas in Malate has given me quite an introduction. It is straightforward and simple enough - tapas are appetizers or beer matches that you enjoy in small servings, and you would usually have it with a little something to drink.
When my cousin went home from Australia a couple months back and stayed in a small hostel near the place, we went on a particularly busy night and I was instantly smitten by the romantic ambiance which was intensified by the live Spanish guitar music. We tried the artichoke appetizers, together with some jamon. We also had some of the ceviche and the boquerones. We had small bites of each, and we still felt hungry so we ordered a small serving of the paella, which was great. On another visit with my friends, we ordered the same things (since they left the ordering to me, and I wasn't feeling quite adventurous that night), but we also tried the highly recommended gambas al ajillo, which was nicely done. The sangria is the best I've had in the metro, and the place also has a great wine list. Casa Armas has that flamboyantly authentic feel, and I think everyone should check it out at least once. read more
