Why does everyone who works at Workforce1 have an attitude problem? When it comes to professionalism for these workers, they don't have that at all. A dry spell of seven months in 2012 on the Unemployment Line, Queens Workforce1 did very little to benefit my job search. Albeit, their resume workshop and interview workshops at two and half hour each respectively did provide useful insight as I adjust my methods in this 2012 ailing rapid talespin economic decline state. The employers whom they recruit for are mostly industrial and transportation. The only great thing about this employment office is their computer resource facility for one hour of free internet usage including fax machine, copying, and phone calls which all must be job search related. **This is for the financial district center but as a whole I think the whole Workforce1 center sucks. So I go in for a call for administrative assistants. I was the first person there so there wasn't much of a wait. I sit down with someone with my resume. They basically tell me they have no administrative assistant jobs for me and if I want I can interview to be a door to door printer salesman?????? I ended up interviewing for a different retail job, and then after being rejected never heard back from the center. This place does the whole bait and switch. They clearly have open calls for jobs that don't actually exist and try to sucker people into terrible jobs. read more

Total waste of time visiting this center, it should be closed own for good. The only helpful seminar I've received was the resume evaluation and how to write your resume which gives you some valuable hints but if you try to email the speaker your resume for further evaluation you'll never get a response so don't even try to email nothing to these people. I went for an ITG voucher test and since I'm honest in my responses didn't pass the very biased test which by the way shouldn't even exist in the first place. Either they give you a grant to reinvent yourself and get back to the job market or not but a biased test is a lame excuse (sounds like the computer "random choosing form Per Scholas in the Bronx, same thing with different name). Since I didn't pass the test the woman in charge told me she would get back to me for further assistance, that was two weeks ago and I haven't got a call from them. I am only giving it 4 stars for one reason. Lack of resources and lack of staffing. Computer systems are outdated and/or their internet service is very slow. However, the fault should only go to their provider(s), whoever they are, and not the actual people working there. Also, lack of communication between them and Unemployment Services, being the fact that Workforce 1 is a private company, and Unemployment Services is a city company. Ironically, they are in the same building as the Department of Motor Vehicles, in which there is little to no communication with each other. That itself is a problem. Lack of shared information leads to caused confusion on all fronts. Now, let's be honest with ourselves here: Yes. There are nice people and not so nice people here. But that is merely based on each staff members' mental capacity on dealing with people entirely. Everyone is different. Period. It's sad to say this, but in my experience in dealing with people in these positions, and as much as they care to admit it, people just want their wages, but do not want the responsibilities that come with it. Again, not all have this mentality, but most. Or half. I don't know their lives, nor do I wish to judge it. It's wrong to do that to anyone. All I know is this: You will get help if you ask the right questions. All are willing to help if you ask the right questions. But you have to say something. Do not keep yourself quiet. If you don't know, you don't know. Tell them that if you need to. But be honest about it. Do not settle for anything which may compromise your given talents and characteristics. Also, I strongly advise patience on your part. You must keep in mind that they are possibly dealing with hundreds, maybe thousands of different people per day. And everyone's personality is different. When it comes to your life, it is about you. But when it comes to the public, it is absolutely not. Perhaps some consideration would make things a lot easier on your part. In any case, if you truly want to work, you must show initiative. Don't just depend on Workforce 1 to find you a job. Go out there yourself and put your best foot forward. Whether you realize it or not, what you choose to do, and how you choose to go about things, never go unnoticed. 1st time going to the Workforce 1 is a long time consuming experience. You first have to get there early to fill out paperwork. Then they take the job seekers in a room to talk about what they can do for you (which is not much at all). They recommend taking classes (such as how to write a well written resume) and speak to a recruiter after the long useless speeches. They also will talk about their "training program." DON'T DO IT! You can only apply to one program that the give for free that takes 6 weeks to process. In that 6 week waiting period, you can't work or take classes related to the program. Thus, you have to be jobless and not look for that length of time only to take one program class that most likely will not get you a job unless you already have work experience in that area. Complete waste of time, my friend had done it before and regets it. Useless your a nurse/in the hospital field or want a min. wage retail job they can't find you a job. The recruiters (who are a first come first 25 people served a day service) will only recommend the "training program." I nicely explained to a recruiter after waiting 4 hours that I have a degree (showed it to him as well) and my resume with experience in my field. After telling me they don't really have alot of employers submitting in my field, he suggested taking the "training program" for a class I took in my first year of college. The other reviews are by people who do not want jobs bad enough or in all honesty don't have the skills or experience a high paying job would want. All this complaining is done by those who don't understand just how hard it is to get a job. Stop looking at the Workforce 1 as the quick fix to get a job. You are not promised a job because you dealt with the hours of waiting and paperwork. It is what it is. Yes, you do have to take an annoying registration class that is about 2 hours. Yes, they ask a lot of questions. Yes, you will be told to wait. It's basically a place where if you do not possess basic knowledge of the job market you will hate it. Fix up your resume! Hope to make a connection with the people there and maybe they will expedite the pricess for you! Dress professionally!!! Leave the damn attitude and polo jeans at home! Groom yourself and maybe hit the gym for a week or two so you are in good spirits when you come in. Come in for the interview and ace it! I went in to workforce 1 twice. The first day i registered and printed all that I needed and made plenty copies. The second day I did two interviews and got one of the jobs. The only reason I give this place a 4 and not a 5 because I had to sit through that damn registration with a classroom full of grown adults who could not follow directions AND 1 of the guards didn't know what he was talking about when giving directions to the bathroom and I really had to go. Only been on the transportation side, but my experiance matches with the other reviews. They keep you there doing the same thing. Taking lessons you already took. Misplacing you and your paper work. They treat you like a dummy. More power to those that make it work for them. It sucks for the good in us, but I see why they need to cut funding. They just got some dump ass people working there. Workforce1 is a scam. A waste of your time. A waste of taxpayer money. Unfortunately, THIS is where the unemployed are forced to go. There are no unemployment offices anymore. The govt contracted out most those services - to Workforce1. And, know this - The unemployed are NOT the clients of Workforce1. The business community is. Doubt me? Its true that Workforce1 is located at all the old unemployment offices - but they are actually in partnership with the NYC Department of Small (and Large) Business Services. You can look it up. The workers of Workforce1 may pretend otherwise - most of them pretend to be government employees. They arent. The official line is that Workforce1 exists to help the unemployed find jobs. They force you to give them your resume, which they will criticize. Maybe they will force you to go to one of their bogus job skills seminars. They will put you on their email list and add you to their 'SMART job-matching' system. They call it 'smart' but all they do is email you jobs a bunch of part-time and temp sales jobs which don't match anything on your resume. Really - I've been in their system for MONTHS - I HAVENT RECEIVED ONE full-time, real job that I was remotely qualified for. Workforce1 exists to funnel the most desperated people into the lowest paying dead end jobs that exist. Truth. They also have "recruiting events." Try to avoid those cattle calls. They will force you to wear a suit just to get in - keep in mind that these are for home health care aide jobs and part time sales jobs at the GAP and the like. You probably won't get an actual interview either. Usually Workforce1 related people will just "prescreen" you. That means they will critique your clothes, your enthusiasm, and maybe your resume. WF1 is big on appearances and enthusiasm. If you are lucky, the prescreening process will lead to a REAL interview weeks or months down the line. Every recruiting event is the same old list of dead-end, low pay, temp and PT job for the same old employers - Appco (a Scam - don't drink the appco koolaid), the Gap, Banana REpublic, etc. - and home health care aides. The recruitment paper always lists these requirements - you must be enthusiastic, fashion-foward, and available 24/7. Good things at Workforce1 ? - free faxing for the unemployed computers and some of their employees actually mean well But don't expect much else. You might think WF1 would be a clearinghouse of training or educational opportunities. You'd be wrong. I got nothing from the Jamaica office. They said the'd call me back with training or educational opportunities. They didn't. Honestly, once they get your resume Workforce1 will happily forget you. Then a few months later NYS will send you a letter telling you to report back to WF1 or your unemployment benefits will be cut off. So, you'll go back. And the Workforce1 shuffle will continue. I wish 60 minutes or 20/20 would investigate the scam that is Workforce1. read more

Knowing a little about this company helps volumes. They aren't really staffed by the city of NY, rather an outsourced corporation known as "Grant Associates" (no doubt one of the Mayor's friends companies). They don't give a rats ass if you get work or not: they are incompetent, ineffective, bloated and bureaucratic. Staff walks around with huge sticks up their posteriors like them talking to you is doing you some kind of favor. Ask about training? They tell you Google it. Why do we need to spend 2-4 hours in training for some idiot to tell me to google information they are supposed to provide? They can get away with being useless so that is exactly what they do. From my experience, Work force 1 to me is a waste of government money. A waste of time and energy for most individuals who have skills, and an education. They do not help you find a job. Just take your Resume, information, have you take tests and so forth, then treat you like your nothing. No one gets back to you. I have submitted my Resume numerous times, and I have great skills and experience. I have participated in the programs they offer. So frustrating, and time consuming. Very redundant. I called the jamaica workforce center at least 20 times from 9am to 11am to no avail because i did not want to be penalized for missing an orientation that I knew nothing about. Finally on my last try, a representative who was very snippy, until she heard my situation, transfered me to the supervisor. This supervisor was indifferent at first but when i told her i had never received the letter, she acted as if it was impossible and she had never heard of someone not getting mail. Very rude. I told her i had received all other mail, specifically one being from the SEAP coordinator who had informed me this same morning of my scheduled orientation. She responded "well thats the address we have and it says it wasnt returned here so are you coming today or not". Still using my "receptionist voice" i told her i was out of town. She ended up resceduling me. I asked if mail was the only notification and she said "Yea well you got everything else by mail". I was so through with the conversation and hung up. Terrible first impression and terrible attitudes. Im a young woman trying to start a business after surprisingly losing my salary. Not a get fired for unemployment little girl. read more

The Workforce at Jamaica is the worst. I've read many reviews, and heard bad rumors about the people who work there but being a job seeker I've decided to not to listen. OH MAN should have listened. First, they lied you on the email stating that the job recruiters will on this day, all to be told when you get there after listening to an hour and a half of B.S that the recruiter will come one another day. In my classroom there were a few other job seekers who have been attending this so called "interview" TEN TIMES !!!!! Are you kidding. DON'T DO IT. WASTE OF YOUR TIME. I could have literally stayed home and slept. They make you wait over an hour. The receptionist rude, not sure why this guy chooses to work with people. The "recruiter" who called me took forever. Didn't offer any beneficial advice. The recruiter told me that I didn't have enough experience even though I had well over the number years of experience they were looking for. Maybe they should have been really specific in the ad? AHEM. He contradicted himself to the core and told me then someone he knew with just a few months of experience got promoted up to the same position that required 2 years of experience. Made no sense. The advice I was given was COMICAL as I've interviewed for similar positions already, and have higher degree education. He suggested an INTERNSHIP HA. I was not impressed. They advertised on Craigslist under what seems to be a fraud; I thought I was going to a certain business, but when I got there, I found myself at Queens Workforce1. There were no signs to help me out. People were treated like cattle. I was asked if I was a "member". What the heck? I have been unemployed for 9 months & hoped at least I could sign up for some training while I was there. No one could really help me or give definite answers to questions. I was told that to qualify for training, I needed a certain number of months of work experience in that field! If I had the experience, WHY would I need the training? It just didn't make sense. I don't see why anybody is complaining about workforce 1. A lot of my friends got jobs through it. People just expect the organization to do everything for them, but in reality there are over 200,000 members doing anything they can to just be seen. These people reviewing 1 or 2 stars never knew they can just go to the website and visit any workforce one available in the 5 boroughs. I myself barely ever got any emails. There will be screenings for at least 2 jobs you'd want and qualify for every week. I personally went after 3 tries, never gave up and now I have a job at the airport. I will defiantly be coming back. You show your face, they see your name. Consistently, that's how they know you're serious. Just keep going and they will try their best to get you a job. Also a fair warning is when you show up to pre screenings, come in early, sit straight and lay away your phones, because people are observing you. read more

Workforce 1 - Um-mm !!! where do I begin. This is the biggest waste of Government funds I've have ever seen. The only thing I see with this program is the rich getting richer. Rich individuals invest money into staffing and building programs like workforce 1. then they bill the Government for each person who pass through their doors. They disguise there thievery by giving people the basic education / Job skills necessary to go out into the workforce and find that minimum wage job. Three things need happen ... (1) Your Educated (2) Your trained (3) Your set up with a job opportunity... Not needing to guarantee that you get the job. And thats all is needed to justify their bill to the Government. which could be 10x the cost they spent on you. So to all my people out there who want to get paid ... open a school. This place is a joke and maybe something worse. When I first I entered, I saw two lines in front of me not knowing which line to stand on since signs and knowlegeable humans were missing,I picked one. Sure enough it was the wrong one. So i get on the right one. I wait on the "right" line for about 15 minutes when Idiot #1 comes up to me and tells me that my perfectly fine laced Skechers SHOES are sneakers ( you see hats, sneakers,jeans, boots are unacceptable at these events) After telling her that my shoes are shoes just with laces she walks away comes back and tells me I need to see the manager and proceeds to direct me towards Idiot #2. I tell Idiot #2 that there is some misunderstanding because my shoes are really shoes, maybe not patent leather but shoes nonetheless. He tells me he knows that my feet have shoes on them not sneakers but the problem is that the very same shoes not sneakers look like sneakers so I won't be let in. "But," I say " they're not sneakers. " Yeah I know." He tells me. "But they look like sneakers." We went around like this two more times but to no avail. I couldn't get in because my shoes which are not really sneakers and easily recognizable as such even by Idiot #2 weren't patent leather dress shoes. Now if the ad placed on Craig's List explicitly stated dress shoes only then there would be no argument from me but it never did. So what's the deal then? Only people with patent leather need apply? Or is it only people of non-white racial makeup?
