I absolutely loved my stay at castle rock. I would absolutely come back every time I visit…read moreEdinburgh. It's close to Waverly station and you can get lots of places from there. The hostel is just in the shadow of Edinburgh castle (I included a photo I took from the sidewalk). Couldn't ask for a better location. The staff was kind and hospitable, and the vibe was very chill. I WILL SAY THIS. the bathrooms are not gendered, so you'll be showering/pooping (in private stalls of course) with both sexes, so if that's not your tea, be aware of that--but it didn't bother me. LOVE LOVE LOVE CASTLE ROCK!!!!!!

The building is old and very creaky with every step someone takes. Doors slam at all hours. I could hear someone snoring so loudly from next door the last two nights. It would be nice if halls lights dimmed at night so that when people come in at 4am it isn't so bright. Take earplugs and an eye mask. I mean, there is nothing staff can do about the many guests always coming through. It's just if you want a good night's sleep I wouldn't stay here. The showers are fine, hot water and mostly clean. There were contacts in one of the showers for four days so I don't know often they are cleaned. But I felt very safe and the location cannot be beat. Lots of great activities offered.

I was really hesitant on staying at hostels especially since that movie came out, you guys know…read morewhat I'm talking about, but let me tell you! If a prissy girl from San Diego can enjoy her stay so will you! My husband and I had just arrived from Edinburgh and we really didn't know what to expect. We had booked a private room like we had done so in other hostels and since we arrived early they let us check in without any hesitation or fuss. We got to our room and I thought it was going to be as tiny as the one before, but NO! It was huge, it was as big as a standard hotel room, our room came with its own tv and private bathroom and a pretty decent size bed. The bed was really rough, it's not as soft and plush as our Hilton room back in London but it did the job for the day we were there. After exploring through Glasgow, we came back to our hostel and explored the connecting bar. We ordered a cheese toastie and chicken wings (don't get them) and a couple cocktails. For staying the hostel you do get a small discount but hey I'll take it. Toastie was good but the chicken wings were a bit flabby so don't get it, but they do have really good deals on their drinks which is always great for me! When we checked out the next morning the receptionist got us a really great deal on a cab for the airport. I really like how personable everyone here is and we really enjoyed our stay. Prices were great but the accommodations were what stood out for us.

This what we get: No working lockers ( you couldn't close the doors of the lockers so try to lock it with a lock (which you could buy for 2 pounds on the eeception) was impossible. Toilet smells like swimming pouls and that didn't get any better after a few hours, but they were clean. Everything looks very used, so the floor shows you some dirty spots under the beds and in the corner. The shower was freezing: no warm or hot water to be found. With a fire alarm there were no employees in the building, just two persons with walkie talkies down stairs.. The doors of the room aren't closing well if you not slamming or pulling them to close. The beds are clean and The rooms are big enough. The including breakfast means: free tea or coffee, toast with butter and jam, cornflakes and milk and if you're lucky some exotic fruits. If one of this things are gone: unfortunately for you, they wont refill. Good places to stay cheap and just wanna drink and party in Glasgow. Otherwise: choose an other place.

Liberty House is a student residence in downtown Glasgow that is also available for short term…read moresummer travellers. It is run by the Liberty Living company which has private student residences throughout the UK (by private, I think it means that the residence is not affiliated with any one school.) Liberty House is a great option for the budget or group traveller. The rooms are small but clean and have everything you need (except towels and loo paper - BYO). It's like going back to your 7th Grade bedroom. Every 4 or 6 rooms have a designated kitchen so you can prepare your own meals if you wish. All the basics equipment is provided but nothing fancy. The staff at LH are wonderful folks. Friendly, round-the-clock care. Note, however, this is not a hotel. You carry your own bags, make your own bed, and follow the rules, especially with respect to noise and cleaning up after yourself in the kitchen. This is a great location if you want to be near the centre of the action. It is steps away from the Modern Art Gallery, Buchanan shopping street, and not far from Glasgow Green. It is affordable but not picturesque and it can be noisy, especially since there is no AC (It is Glasgow, after all) and windows must be opened on warm nights. Try to get a room that faces the courtyard and not Queen Street. There is an after-hours bar on Queen that runs until 4 a.m. on the weekends. I peeked out my window at 3:30 and the street scene looked like Daytona Beach Spring Break. Bring along ear plugs, get the white noise app on your iPad or turn off your hearing aid.
