Came here on a Friday night and the rush was just starting. The skip the dishes folks were coming in constantly which shows how popular the place is. My buddy is from out of town and he comes here whenever can so I was pretty excited to try the food. Normally when I get a donair they carve it off the spit and make it then, but Queen donair had the meat already cooking - for the rush I'm guessing. The meat was chopped pretty finely and I'm guessing that's what contributed to the donair being overcooked. The cheese was a bit disappointing as a small slice was slapped inside the pita and didn't really melt. Overall everyone is very friendly and service was fast enough but the place is a bit rundown with seats that could use some repair. They have a restroom with a door that opens right into the restaurant and a conveniently broken lock. read more

You've heard me talk about Edmonton's unofficial food in the past and there's one more restaurant that I had to add to the list. At this point I have visited all of the city's most celebrated donair shops, including Swiss Donair and Simply Donairs. I've given you the full history of this Halifax-born meat wrap and I've explained how it became such a sensation in Edmonton specifically. Now all you really need to know is which one is the best. If you only had time to eat ONE, which should it be? Edmonton Journal named Queen Donair the Best Shawarma/Donair 2021 and I needed to visit them in order to round out the Edmonton donair trifecta. (Of course there are plenty of other donair shops in the city - LOTS! But these three tend to have the most notoriety and buzz.) Another thing that I did at each of the shops? I tried their poutine. Because each of them offers a spin on this Canadian classic. Queen Donair has a few locations around the city and one of the most popular ones used to be the location on Whyte Ave. (It was a literal hole-in-the-wall and if you're like me, you have memories of eating their donairs at about 3am...) Unfortunately the Whyte Ave location has since closed. Because of this, I opted for the second best thing, which is the Downtown shop on Jasper Ave. With brightly-lit signage, you'll find them on one of the busiest corners in the city. I visited on a chilly Sunday evening and was happy to get into their warm and welcoming space. I have to admit, I was very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is roomy, there's a nice dining area, and there's actually some nice decor. A far, FAR cry from what the old location on Whyte Ave used to look like, that's for sure. I was impressed at the comfortable seating and upholstery, the faux exposed brick wall is a nice touch, and the bejeweled wall decorations bring a lot of style. It's still the sort of operation where you place your order at the counter, there are still vertical spinning meats (I'd be angry if there wasn't!), but it's easily the nicest restaurant out of the three that I've visited. It feels more like a place to dine and much less like a dingy fast food establishment. The service was also incredibly friendly. The gentleman working was gracious and kind. Once our order was placed we made our way to a table and after a short wait the food was delivered directly to our spot and it was time to get started! Like most donair shops in town, there are two types of meat available; beef and chicken. They'll usually even let you mix both together if you want to. Attempting to keep things pretty classic, I went for the Cheese Donair (Onion, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, sweet sauce - $10.40) since that's what I've been getting everywhere. Similar to all of the other places, it's massive. You'll be asked if you want all of the toppings, and yes, of course you do. The shaved, seasoned beef is extremely abundant. There is no skimping out when it comes to the absolute heaping amount of meat on this thing. Tender and flavourful, the donair meat is exactly everything that it's supposed to be. There's something about its texture that just seems so satisfying. The flatbread was warm and soft with just the right amount of chew. The veggies all seemed fresh and were packed in with a far less ratio than the meat. But let's face it, that's what you want. There's cheese in there somewhere. And of course the sweet sauce, the crowning element that makes a donair exactly what it is. It's messy, it will definitely fall apart all over your pants, but this donair is also an extremely perfect example of a classic "Edmonton donair." They aren't fooling around with it, they aren't giving you too many options, Queen Donair is simply giving you what you came for. I might be tempted to say that the donair at Simply Donairs is my overall favourite but their location is also pretty inconvenient. The one at Queen Donair is solid and you can have it right now. As I mentioned, all of the donair shops make a donair poutine. They understand that they've got a golden opportunity to create a beautiful marriage between Canadian and Turkish-by-way-of-Halifax cuisine. However, at Queen Donair there are LOTS of options. They've got at least seven types of poutine, all using different meats and different starch bases. Also, they've got mozza sticks. So that's something. I went straight for the most epic of the poutines and ordered the Tater Tot Donair Poutine ($14.99) because even though I'm a poutine purist, when tots are a choice... You should probably do tots. This poutine is INSANE. First of all, it's gigantic. It's also about 50% donair meat which is ridiculous. The golden fried tater tots are somewhere underneath the heap of stuff, everything is drenched in gravy, there's a whole lot of cheese used (it's shredded cheese, however none of the donair shops use curds), and the top is completely smothered in sweet sauce. NEGLIGENCE IN FOOD PREPARATION I came in with my 2 coworkers and we all ordered the same Cheese Donair combo separately. The only difference in our orders was our drink choice and my request for NO ONIONS. They handed all our donairs at the same time, so I had to ask which bag held the donair with no onions. They had prepared all 3 with onions and so they asked me to give the donair back and I did-- assuming they would make sure when they gave it back, it would have no onions. Once they handed the bag back, I did not bother unravelling it to triple check because i've been here before and the ladies are nice. Got back to the office and there were tons of onions inside. I have been in donair mode for a couple weeks searching out the best places and this one is a keeper. The meat is soft and plentiful and tasty . Just the right amount of veggies and sweet sauce. The fries are standard frozen but the gravy is really good so the poutine i had was good too. Service is good and the seating decor is pretty funny and interesting with sort of a retro/deco looking funky tabletop design . They have a few big tvs to watch while you eat if you like that. First try on a donair. They had a sign saying voted Best Donair of Edmonton so went for it. I ordered a jumbo donair, but was heavily disappointed. They charged an extra 1.25 for a small slice of cheese... I don't know portion wise, but I just saw the cook add extra meat and filling. The sauce was terrible. It was too sweet and ruined the flavor of the meat. In addition, the end of the donair was filled with grease and too much sauce resulting in my hands being covered in sauce. Donair poutine........ donair poutine......... donair poutine...... The donairs are pretty decent but they need a larger pita wrap unless you're the type of guy who likes to get his hands dirty. The regular poutine is my favourite in town which would personally offend any french Canadian. But the way the shredded mozzarella melts into the gravy is unreal and i could eat it almost every day. If I could give this a ZERO star I would. I drove there and they gave me sweet sauce instead of tzaziki, the cashier and the donair artist were very incompetent. We called them and they refused to deliver us another donair so we drove another half hour and the second donair they gave us was dry and crumbs. Was craving donair. The best one I've found in Edmonton is in the southside however I live in the Oliver area and simply didn't want to drive. I've had donair from this (Queen donair) establishment in the past but have never reviewed it. I went down Thursday night and ordered my usual the jumbo with the toppings that I like. Extra Garlic/ tsasiki sauce. Onions, pickles, tomatoes. They didn't have pickled turnips unfortunately and I didn't ask about pepperoncini peppers. Anyways he took my order after I had shared with him that in maps on iPhone the hours to this establishment were incorrect saying it closed at 5pm daily. I have been there late on a few different occasions and I know it is open until 3am on Thursday-Saturday. I'm not sure about Sunday's. But the rest of the week it's open till 2:30 am. I do believe they open at 10 or 11 in time for lunch. In telling him this he went overboard on my donair. It's the largest one I've ever had from this queen donair and it was delicious. I'm so happy this place exists. At 1am when you need a donair after a few/lot of drinks with friends. It's conveniently situated on Jasper Avenue, a short stoat along the popular street from many pubs. We were walking past the window and spotted the cool chairs! It looks clean and well set up, so there is a load of seats for the weekend rush. I went mid-week so there was only a handful of customers. Made a bee-line straight to the desk. 'Cheese donair, please'. After a short wait, it was here. The donair had the right amount of salad so it didn't feel like I was just eating donair meat rolled up. This was the worst donair I've ever had. Donair meat should never be chopped up. I feel like I was playing catch the entire time. Meat everywhere. On the floor, on me, on everything but in the pita. Not sure the affiliation with the one on the north side, but the experience is totally different. Very professional. Very good service. 7.00$ for a regular donair is very reasonable. For a downtown establishment that is a remarkable price. It does look sketchy from the outside and rundown from the inside, but it's hard for me to complain about this given the price. It wasn't the best donair I've had, but it was satisfying. Sauce was a bit on the sweet side and it was a messy venture. But I can't say it wasn't good. I do get nervous about these kinds of places though. You never know when they might be in news for a hepatitis scare or something. My OCD and paranoia kicking in? Maybe! I'm not saying this is the case, but the value is so good here ... Is too good to be true? I've also had their donair poutine before as well which isn't too bad either. They also serve burger baron burgers. I ordered the Baroness Burger Combo believing it provided the best bang for your buck. It was okay at best. The burger bun was not very soft when first chewing on it, probably because it was sitting on the bun warmer for too long. The fries were all right but nowhere near as crispy as the ones served at McDonald's. The can of iced tea tasted way too sour because it was not the regular kind; it had extra lemon in it. I needed to drink two additional styrofoam cups of water just to dilute the sour flavor in my mouth. Would I try this place again? Maybe, but just for the donairs. read more

Horrible service. Ordered a poutine and it came very cold. When asked for a new one was told "you were sitting there for 20 minutes too bad". I put the STYROFOAM poutine in the microwave even though that is flammable. The cooks wanted to give me a new one, but the worker on the till (probably the owner) said "do not give her a new one". This place is a god send if you've been drinking on jasper and want your fix of donairs. The service is very quick even though the place can be packed on Friday, Saturday nights! it was my first time at this restaurant and let me tell you something ...I ordered a Chicken donair combo, and before I could even finish saying the word "combo" to the front cashier lady she had already given me the total of my food without even asking if I needed anything else. Disrespect by far, besides that, the fries were served COLD. The chicken donair I can tell was very old, and I am pretty sure that the chicken is not supposed to taste like the whole roasted chicken you buy at superstore LOL. when given my bag, she directed me to the napkins rudely and im pretty sure its there job to complete the entire order when its placed " TO GO" and not make themselves look like they dont enjoy what there doing.Anyways. it was bad service, and not the most appetizing thing to swallow down. It's open pretty late compared to other establishments, its prices are about the same as you would pay for donairs at other places e.g. A cheese donair is $8. Each time I go, there's always the same 2 guys working there and they remembered me and my exact order after I had only been there once before! They're really friendly and they get your food done quickly. The food is better than a lot of other donair shops I've been to! Every time I go here they mess up my order. I never get bacon on my burgers, the toppings are always wrong, the fries aren't that good, and the gravy is runny. There are better options around this place, try the Comodor, it's a little hipster but the fries are palatable. read more
