The rooftop allowed for great views of the water and birdseye view of outdoor displays of plants and art installations surrounding the buildings. Nice option to be indoors in fairly comfortable climate controlled spaces during midday heat. Staff and volunteers were very welcoming and helpful with providing info about the venue and surrounding areas. Parking lot is free and overall property is extremely accessible and accommodating for all mobility levels. Restrooms are clean and property is well maintained and pristine.

The centerpiece is the former Union Pacific Depot, constructed in the late 1880s. Designed by architect Henry Van Brunt, the heavy sandstone structure and its 120-foot clock tower remain the defining architectural landmark of the city. Fully restored and designated a National Historic Landmark, it stands as a grand reminder of the transcontinental railroad era that birthed Cheyenne. Inside, the Cheyenne Depot Museum details the rail history of the American West with historical artifacts and an extensive model railroad layout. We did not buy tickets for the full exhibit hall, choosing instead to check out the gift shop and poke around the main lobby. While we were walking through, a young girl was holding her birthday party right there in the historic lobby. It was sweet, charming, and just a tiny bit melancholy. There was nothing wrong with the party itself, which was a perfectly nice family gathering. It was simply the realization that in Cheyenne, a National Historic Landmark double-hats as a primary venue for an eight-year-old's birthday cake. It felt like a wonderfully authentic, highly specific snapshot of local life. The outdoor plaza is a clean brick square that hosts community gatherings and live music during the warmer months. On a quiet afternoon, it is a pleasant spot to walk around, admire the stone masonry, and absorb a bit of Western history without having to work particularly hard for it. Cheyenne is a small city with an easygoing pace that seems to have completely avoided the invention of modern urgency. The Depot building itself is magnificent, but the overall plaza experience is a thirty-minute pit stop rather than a reason to book a trip. If you are already traveling through southern Wyoming, it is well worth pulling off the highway to take a look. Just do not expect a sprawling tourist district once you get there.

Elaborate stonework speaks to the care and craftsmanship lent to the construction of this landmark building and Wyoming citizens have every reason to be proud. Beautiful Building, Welcoming Staff, History and Present and Future…read more - - - - - - - - June, 2026 Visit We visited Cheyenne in 2019 and saw the beautiful building from the outside. This 2026 trip we were able to visit the inside. We saw both legislative branches - the House and the Senate, and the original Supreme Court, where women's right to vote was first guaranteed. The Governor's office is also in the building, thought you are not allowed to enter unless you have an appointment. You'll learn that from the guard at the door, and if you're fortunate like we were, the guard will share much with you about Wyoming and the Capitol Building. I really with I remembered his/your name, Officer... thank you for being so welcoming and for sharing all you shared... how the floor tiles are from Tennessee and Vermont, the wood largely from Michigan; how one of the bannisters is intentionally upside-down, and one spot in the ceiling stained glass is intentionally inaccurate, to reflect the imperfection in us all; history of the state's governors, including the first ever US female governor, and more. There are many historical items, including some items and videos in a room that has a huge safe door for entry. Definitely worth visiting! It would be nice if the VFW could partner with the city, and manage it like a city park as well as connecting it to the Greenway path that is just south of it. A little elbow grease, and some funding would do wonders for this park and the memorial garden across the dirt street.
