We came here originally for the burger special they have on Monday and we keep coming back because everything is just that darn good. The burgers, even when full price, are 100% worth it. The upgrade to tots is also always worth it. Even if you order no other food, you need to try the tots. Anyway, the beer selection is the best I've found in the area. They have a literal page of sours much to my Fiance's delight, and a large selection of local beers. Their happy hour is great as well. If beer isn't your thing they also have pages of liquor, so there is really something for everyone. Don't let the somewhat hidden entrance fool you, it's completely worth the descent down the stairs. I've been here a few times, and yes, I was skeptical. It is a dark, narrow spot and if you get there before the rush, it appears that no one ever comes to this place. But, I always heard about this mysterious place and their famed tater tots. My first visit here I just had beer. They have a pretty good beer selection and the bartenders and servers always seem very knowledgeable. Also, it is important to know that they really only serve beer. They do have whiskey, but I am pretty sure there are no "cocktails" or mixed drinks, nor wine. That's all cool and all, but I have to tell about their food. I came here for happy hour on a Monday evening after work. Mondays are half price burger day (we learned that once we arrived) and all the burgers come with tater tots as a side. I ordered the patty melt with tater tots with old bay seasoning and my boyfriend ordered a half pound burger with plain tater tots. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with my food. The burger on the patty melt was complemented with interestingly, sweet caramelized onions and melted cheese. It was so good. But, the star was the tater tots. As my bf stated, "Now these are how you are supposed make tater tots!" They were hot, super crispy with a soft potatoey (lol) center. Mine were sprinkled with just the right amount of old bay, not too much, but just enough to pop with extra flavor. There are other options for tater tots such as topped with chili or cheese. But, I'm a simple gal and I think they are great fresh out the fryer. I recommend Quarry House for anyone in the area that is looking for a low-key, bar/dive experience. Not to mention the food is reasonably priced on days with specials. For two burgers with tater tots and three beers, the bill came to about $22 maybe (not including tip). read more

This was my first time here. Love the vibe and landscape of the restaurant. Everything on their short menu was delicious. We were a group of 8 and hence got all on the menu. Their Beer collections is one of a kind, I would definitely come back to try more of it. read more

This is by far the best dive bar in the DC area. It has everything! Great food, a great drink selection, and live music. The waiters are so kind and the bartender was so friendly. Also!! Which is why I just feel obligated to tell you about Quarry House Tavern. Quarry House was described to me as, " the basement of Bombay Gaylord." Those are pretty good instructions. Seeing as there's no sign, address, or arrow; you might want to keep that little tip in mind. It's amazing that this little place can stay hidden among all the hustle and bustle of upstairs Georgia Ave. Walking down beaten down raggedy stairs past the banners that are monogrammed 'QH', you don't know quite what to expect when you get to the bottom. You walk in the door to find a dimly lit and strong walled bar that reminds you of being in a mine shaft. It also reminded me of the "Prancing Pony" where Aragorn met Frodo in the first Lord Of The Rings (but swords aren't as much of a necessity). Quarry House can only be described as a dive bar. It actually gives the term "Dive Bar" a run for its money. No frills, lots of beer, and good tots. My friend and I ordered a 1/3 pound burger which was well received by us both. The extra super turbo crispy tots that were served with Old Bay were divine. I really let the cat out of the bag on this one. Really spilt the beans all over the place. There are no more wraps to be under. The tongue has slipped. Go enjoy good food, good company, and a bunker that is surely strong enough to protect you from anyone who might want to interrupt your good time. read more

After reading Yelp reviews, I wanted to try the burgers and tater tots. The Quarry House has a solid 4 star rating. Even though it wasn't half price burger night, my friends and I stopped in before a Yelp event. Quarry House offers tater tots with all kinds of toppings. We ordered tots two ways, one with cheese and the other with bacon and cheese. I liked the one with bacon and cheese better. The bacon helped add some crunch and savory taste to the tots. We also ordered friend pickles and onion rings. The onion rings were large in size, but the batter was bland and did not have enough seasoning. They offered a dipping sauce and ketchup, but neither one really helped the taste. I loved the giant fried pickle. It was served with a refreshing ranch dip and the pickle was fried nicely. The only problem was trying to eat this monster of a pickle. It was a huge,six inch pickle, and probably should have been cut in pieces. It was my favorite part of the meal. I ordered the patty melt with cheddar cheese. I ordered it medium and it came out well done. It had no taste. It reminded me of a frozen patty from the freezer being dropped on a grill and then forgotten about. I had heard so many good things about their burgers and I was very disappointed. At least with a frozen patty, I would have added seasoning. Our waiter reminded me of a character from a movie. He wore a crown and seemed very distracted. I never got a refill on my drink. In fact, when we were trying to get our check, he had sat down at a table with his friends, and didn't want to be disturbed. Seriously? So, maybe they were having a bad night? Many thanks to the reviewers who pointed out this dive bar is downstairs from Bombay Gaylord. Even though I parked right down the street in the Bonifant garage, that blessed backlit sign still saved me from the cold when a certain chu didn't answer his phone. Met Juliana and some mutual Yelper friends for half-price burger Monday and camaraderie. Table-nabbing was a free-for-all endeavor that we failed at, so we ended up invading the lounge area at the very back. Beware those funny dips in the floor! I'm glad I drained my radiator at work before the drive, especially after witnessing the cutthroat line for the bathroom. We were more than surprised to find a willing server to take our orders from our perch, and I gladly ordered a Sterkens White while Hyunoo and I perused the menu. We ended up splitting a 1/2 lb bacon cheddar burger with a side of tots, and an order of PBR battered chicken tenders. The former was proof of decent bar grub, hot and fresh to line our tummies. Ketchup never hurts when you're eating fairly tasty tots. The latter is best eaten with knife and fork to protect your mouth from the pockets of fry oil hiding between chicken and batter. BBQ sauce didn't really help much since it just tasted greasy instead of flavorful. Most people kept to their own groups. Music was a little sporadic, and the background hubbub from the carnivore crowd made it challenging to talk to multiple people simultaneously. I liked the beer selection, limited but nicely varied. Qt gets a solid 4 stars and they earned it. I didn't love you at first because you were a dark, crusty lover of bitter beers which took my little heart, minced it, and reformed it to what a true beer lover's heart should look like. There's nothing more to say about this place other than its a cool hang out with a at least 50:50 ratio of men to women. It's a hang out with the boys, grab some burgers with your coworkers, drink some beer with someone who looks better in the dark. An outrageous selection of beers and even whiskeys. They've got a rotating draft list of about 4 good beers and they tell you what's on deck. Sometimes they run out of the bottled selection but the bartender always makes fantastic alternate suggestions. The burgers are the best I've had in Moco. Perfectly cooked and flavorful, juicy patties topped with a your choice of aromatic and protein PLUS a plethora of toppings from LTO to yellow peppers & pickles. Damn. Service sucks when they get busy, it's true, but hey they got giant water coolers so you can rehydrate between beers and before you can purse your pretty lips into a complaint you've got your next beer in front of you. summary: great beers & burgers, very dark inside, got outdoor seating which is awesome for nice days, below average service. Awesome so many times over. If I lived in the SS, I would take up residency here. I would have my own bar stool. Everyone would know me by name. The QH is pretty much everything you want in a bar. It's got an excellent beer list, great food, live music, an interesting crowd, and it's totally dive-y and unique. Any bar that has so many beers they have an entire menu devoted to their beer offerings is my type of place. And any time I spy a menu with beers I haven't heard of before (a difficult thing to accomplish with me), I pretty much fall in love. And while not cheap, the unique beers were very reasonably priced. I have no issues paying $5 for a great beer that I can't really get anywhere else. For food, we opted for the homemade chips with dill dip and hot wings with both ranch and blue cheese. The chips were great. Not particularly original in and of themselves. But the dill dip was absolutely delicious. And the serving was huge. Definitely worth $4. The wings were superb ($6 for 1/2 dozen). The hot (they also have Hot BBQ, 4 Alarm, etc.) was the perfect balance of heat and tastiness. The wings were meaty, cooked just right, and perfectly coated in sauce. And the ranch and blue cheese dips were 100% kitchen-made. Thick and yummy and the perfect wing compliment. And then there's the music, the money from all around the world, the graffiti, the bathroom, the music, the conversations, the fact that's in a basement, etc., etc. Freaking love it! Is a good place to grab a beer and greasy food while you are on the area. They have a decent offering for tap beer.

They have great deals for burgers and some other late night foods. I believe each day they have some kind of special which is great on your pocket. They also have a really good selection of beer and liquor, some of course priced a bit more than others. I came here on a Thursday and there was no set special. It was an "ask your server" special. It ended up being a Mexican-Style burger with tater tots on the side for about $13-14. It was more than enough for my dinner! Finding it was not that tricky but it did not have a huge sign, well from what I can remember. Parking is free after 7 or else you may have to pay at the garage. read more

So happy that it's back! I was so excited to be here again that I didn't take any pictures, but I promise I'll post an update next time. On Friday, I brought a date for dinner, and burgers were on the menu. We got fried avocado and fried pickles to share. The avocado had an amazing sesame sauce with them that I'd love to put on everything. I prefer fried pickle slices to spears (these were hotter than the center of the sun) but they were still great, and the creamy sauce that came with them was helpful for later. My date got the jalapeño/cream cheese/jalapeño jelly burger (delicious), and I got the afterburner. This is where the trouble started. I didn't really believe it would be so spicy, but my eyes watered and my whole mouth was on fire and my nose started running. The only thing that saved me was the breading on the fried pickles dipped in the creamy sauce. Though I was unprepared, it was perfect, and the tots were as good as everyone said they were. This place makes the best burgers I've ever had. Specifically the Black and Blue burger -- comes with bleu cheese and Cajun seasoning. Their burgers come on sesame buns with lettuce, tomato, red onion unless you specify otherwise. They do homemade chips and tots instead of fries. Both are great. Get the Old Bay tots if you aren't averse to a little salt or seasoning. Their beer list is the most extensive I've seen (like over 100 distinct choices, and at least 10 or so local on draft), and prices are super reasonable. I am not a whisky person but they have a huge selection of whisky as well. Their staff is always friendly. One thing: you can't split a check more than 2 ways. Cute neighborhood bar. In the basement so a true dive bar feel. You'll find this place with a jukebox and regulars. Drinks were decent and the food was nothing short than a greasy hangover fix(alright in my book!) they are known for their variety of burgers and loaded tots. Not a welcoming vibe for us black people. From the moment we walked inside we can feel the stares as if we were in the wrong place. Nobody was there to seat us so we sat ourselves. A waiter ( the guy with the big round belly - evening/night shift) approached us throwing menus on the table saying they are only serving late night menu and they close soon. We asked if they had French fries he said, "NO!" We thought he was joking the way he said it so serious but he was extremely rude and racist towards us. He then proceeded to tell us if we can go somewhere else! So we did. This place won't get our money and management should be ashamed of allowing a staff member to represent their facility like that but they are probably on the same side. If I had a different server, this review would have definitely been 4 stars. The burgers were amazingggg. I ordered the peppercorn crusted burger with bacon and garlic aioli. My boyfriend ordered the Greek burger which was great as well. The place was really dim and didn't look the cleanest, but I guess that's the vibe. Now the service.... it was awful. It looks like I had the same server as another recent Yelp reviewer. She was the rudest server I've ever encountered in my life. My boyfriend ordered a beer and he asked me to try a sip. No more than a minute later, the server stormed up to our table demanding to see my ID, raising her voice at me in front of the whole restaurant. I get the reasoning, but she scolded me like a child. (Also, boo, I turned 21 a few years ago). I've never been treated so poorly by a waitress. I was so uncomfortable and shaken that we left 10 minutes later. This is the original dive bar of dive bars and if you could only go to one bar in SS, this is the one you should go to. It's underneath the burned out Bombay Gaylord restaurant. There used to be a wood sign with an arrow, but It fell off and they replaced it with a piece of notebook paper ripped out of a spiral bound notebook with the letters "QH" and an arrow pointing down that they just tacked to the wall. I don't think they replaced the sign and eventually the piece of paper blew away. This bar was one if those bars that you always kind of worried about getting caught in a fire - because nothing about it seemed up to code - and then of course there was the big fire. It took them a long time to rebuild and what was really awesome was after spending probably thousands on remodeling it looks just as divy and terrible as it did before the fire. There's a menu for beer and a separate menu for food, which (pre-fire) just had three things: cheeseburger, grilled cheese, tots. But no one goes to the QH for food - you go for the beer list and that special dank atmosphere. Monday night is half priced burger night and they have the best cheese burger you'll eat in your life. The kind where juice runs down your forearm. And a special "Elvis" burger with pimento cheese and pickles. This is special to me because I grew up in NC where pimento cheese is considered a "salad." I believe I remember the food critic from the Wash Post raving about their grilled cheese. Also amazing. One of my friends was at the QH when they had some high alcohol beer on tap and woke up the next day in a cheap hotel room with a black eye and a big lump on his head, no jacket, no wallet and no idea how he ended up there. The customer service here was awful. My guy friend and I popped in last night for a night cap. The server, a late 30s +, obviously tired and nasty African AM woman was the absolute worse!!!! My guy said hello and asked what she recommended. She responded, "everything we have is on the paper, that's why we have the paper." She gave us a minute and when she came back, he asked what her favorite was...her response? Sierra Mist. This woman was nasty for no reason. She was properly greeted, we were open and trying to engage...just nasty. After the second dose of nastiness, I told him that I wanted to leave. Home girl needs some coaching or needs to find another job where she doesn't have to engage with people! I chose this spot because of the reviews, but my experience was crap! read more
