I have to give this spot 5 stars based on being THE BEST DIVE BAR in the area. Seriously. If you love that divey vibey- watch your step as you descend down the steep cement stairs into the dark basement and get yourself a beer or Rye. Or a beer AND a whiskey! Their menu is so overwhelmingly large I usually pick a page and order from only that section for the night. You can go there once a week for a year and not hit everything (unless you're drinking a LOT, which, hey- do your thing!) I was a QH lover before they had a major fire- so I recall that hysterical bathroom with "the throne" (if you know, you know) and the smell wafting from the floor and that big ole boar head in the front. The BEST PART after they renovated after the fire is that it literally looked almost the same, but with a cleaner better smell. LOL. Also that throne is gone and I miss it- but the remaining graffiti on the walls fills my nostalgia ;-) oh, and the boar is still there! The bartenders are amazingly knowledgable and can recommend something great for you to try if you aren't sure. I almost always come here when in town to visit my friend. It's a cool underground space, very dark, no TVs - a great place to catch up with a few drinks (though when they have live music it can get very loud). Outstanding and extensive beer list including a lot of local drafts and some pretty hard-to-find bottles/cans. The burger is excellent, and it's hard to say no to a huge plate of tots with old bay for $7. The service is fast even when they're on the busy side. A+ bar. read more

This joint has got a lot of beer-lover-culture charm in addition to a delicious menu that will comfort your American soul. If you're wondering, yes, their sandwiches are amazing and I'd say rank pretty high in the D.C. Maryland Virginia (DMV) burger game. The tater tots are yummy and the dimly lit atmosphere makes for a calming/relaxing atmosphere for you to just enjoy life's pleasures. I went with this burger: Morning Glory Burger - Jalapeno, fried egg, cream cheese, bacon and maple mayo. Upping my rating to a 5, as we've come back many times since the original visit and every burger I've tried has been great. My favorites are the Spicy Club and the Morning Glory. The bacon they use is really good quality - no fast food bacon here. The burgers are large. Last time I went my husband and I split one, and between the half burger, half side salad, and half an order of onion rings, I was plenty full. (Hubby wished he had more though!) I always enjoy the onion rings, but they vary from visit to visit. Maybe they have dueling chefs with different recipes? I'm not sure. Always yummy though. I also found a few couple drink options for those days when we take the bus - the canned Mai Tai is very light and refreshing, almost like a soda, but it packs a wallop. If you come during happy hour, the vodka & cranberry special is a good choice for a bargain. They also carry Lindemann's lambic in several flavors, but the bottles are pretty large (sharing size!) and not cheap. When I'm driving, diet coke is pretty much what I get for drinkies. Our service has always been very good after the first visit. I really like the back room, it's quieter than the main bar, and now we have 'our' table that we've sat at pretty much every visit after our first. By the way, some of the graffiti in the bathroom on the left is pretty damn funny. read more

Sweet- maple mayo Savory- Bacon and egg on a burger Spicy- Jalapeño cream cheese Got the devil eggs, pimento cheese, and fried pickles. I would recommend the pickles. I normally eat my burgers with lots of crispy cool vegetables. The morning glory was the opposite and is my new favorite burger. I don't eat pickles as a snack, not a big fan of fries pickles either. First off, know this: I love burgers. I'm picky about burgers. Snobbish even. Ordered the Chophouse burger ($14) with Onion Rings (+$3.95). Onion rings golden fried with a corn batter. Thick & juicy onion slices. Good. Was the best part of the meal. There are burger patties being HANDmade in the Metro area, for $8.50, where bone marrow is mixed into the patty and your mind melds into meaty bliss on first bite (Steeze Burger). There are patties made with care, where the chef checks the size of the chuck ground, for better caramelization of the meat and steam is used to melt the cheese on top (@Red Apron Butcher $17). The Chophouse burger is a below average burger, unless you're really hungry, with already a few ales in you, where any kind of food at that point is good... and you need something to fill your belly to help sober you up. The patty was cleary one of those 'pre-made-mass-packaged-corporate-restaurant-industry' ones. I don't mind paying for a tasty burger. For $14, the quality better be floating around my top 5 DC Metro favorites. Definitely not worth $14. And if you're a sloppy-juicy-messy burger lover... this one was very tidy. read more

We've been to Quarry House Tavern countless times and I will say it's a really solid "dive bar." We were craving the burgers and were looking forward to tonight all week. We started with the onion rings and the batter is so so good! Fluffy, light, flavorful. They came with ranch dipping sauce. I ordered the Continental burger which is *chefs kiss* perfection. The bitterness of the arugula is complemented by the fig jam and the melted Brie is really my favorite part. Of course the burger itself is very well seasoned and cooked. Ryan got the Morning Glory and he said he wasn't as flavorful as he had hoped and not his favorite on the menu. They have a good happy hour deal with the Peabody Heights beer, but I never got the last one I ordered, which is no big deal. We will definitely be back to try the burgers we haven't tried. read more

Divey with a chance of decent burgers is the forecast for this joint. I was craving a burger and this place came highly rated on Yelp. Since I was in the neighborhood I thought I would give it a try. The first thing I noted was that the "dive" component was definitely not overstated. I didn't see a server the whole time I was in there (nor was there a hostess stand or instructions on whether or not to wait to be seated) so rather than stand around trying to figure things out, I took a seat at the bar... right in front of a massive mounted boar's head. Charming. I sipped on a coffee stout (pretty good!) While I waited for my Aloha Burger to arrive. The wait wasn't long at all and it was a pretty decent burger. I ordered the 8 oz "supersized" burger with a side of tater tots. The combination of sweet and savory (with the "sweet" contributed from both the Korean BBQ sauce as well as the thick slice of pineapple on top of the patty) was just what the doctor ordered. And the tots.... I mean, who doesn't like tater tots? The atmosphere was a bit antisocial and otherwise uninviting for my taste so didn't bother to stay for another beer. I stayed just long enough to finish my burger and promptly got out of dodge. Such a great dive bar in downtown Silver Spring! Stopped in on a Thursday evening for happy hour. The atmosphere is quintessential dive bar in the best way and it's a very friendly environment. Parking isn't great in this area so probably best to find a garage nearby. We tried the nachos and Buffalo cauliflower (both at happy hour price so my meal was $12 total). The nachos were just alright, but I really loved the Buffalo cauliflower - so lightly breaded and served with delicious ranch dressing on the side. We also had an order of wings (probably the best we've had in the SS area) and a BYO burger which was large and delicious with plentiful toppings. Highly recommend if you're looking for a no-frills, cool basement to have a few drinks and good eats! read more

Cozy little neighborhood bar! Came here on a weekday night and it was actually decently packed. I love the wrap around bar although I sat at one of the corner tables. Great local beer selection. I also found the server to be pretty attentive to our table despite serving a lot of other guests between the two rooms. Will definitely be back! The only issue I had was trying to find the location. Google maps was not very helpful but there is a narrow stairwell to the right of Popeyes that will lead you down to the bar. read more

I've been coming here with my roommate sporadically for over 4 months and we've throughly enjoyed not only the food here but the atmosphere and service as well. However today I placed a pickup order and when I arrived I greeted the server and got no greeting in return. As I was left in the doorway, she went to the back, grabbed a random order and handed it to me saying "Uber Eats right"? Are you serious? Not only could you not greet me when I walked in but you're not going to even ask me if I needed to be seated? or what at all I was there for? Why would you just assume that I was a delivery driver? I try really hard to give good establishments their flowers but this was a little too off putting for my liking. I've picked up twice in the past week... The LEAST you could do is tend to me at the door without assumptions of why I might be there . This is the first time I felt uncomfortable dining while Black at Quarry House and I hope it is the last. To Quarry House we go! Hooray for half-price burgers on Mondays! I have eagerly waited for Quarry House Tavern to re-open and it's back! Located at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Bonifant Street and down some stairs, you really have to know what you're looking for. It's easy to miss, so just keep your eyes peeled for the "QH" or 8401 address. It's a seat yourself kind of place. There's also a water cooler and additional condiments (salt, pepper, hot sauce, etc.) in the corner where you can help yourself. If you're drinking alcohol and on the young side (ie. just turned 21), be advised: vertical IDs not accepted. I ordered the 1/3 pound All-American Burger cooked medium with tater tots (all burgers are served with your choice of chips, tater tots, or a salad). With the exception of some sauces, most toppings cost extra. Our burgers were out within 10 minutes of ordering. It came with a generous serving of tater tots, which hit the spot. Crunchy on the outside, potato-y on the inside, and warm all over, these tater tots are a winner. I definitely ate more than I should have. My burger wasn't the most flavorful, but a whole meal for $5.25 (excluding tax and tip) - I can't complain. I'll be back for sure. read more

Quarry House Tavern is the epitome of a dive bar in downtown Silver Spring....an informal, no-frills drinking den in a basement. Prior to last night, I'd never been here before but a friend I was meeting recommended it and used to frequent in the past. I must admit, as I was walking down the stairs to the entrance, I didn't know what the hell I was getting myself into but ended up being pleasantly surprised. My friend and I enjoyed our drinks and eventually ordered food. We had the extra-hot buffalo wings with carrots and celery and the fried mozzarella. The wings were tasty and the sauce actually was extra spicy to my surprise. The fried mozzarella was a miss though and I wouldn't order again. The bartenders were friendly and attentive and I can absolutely see myself returning often. I had such a good time I forgot to take pictures! read more

This place is a Silver Spring classic. Not even a fire could've kept this place away. Delectable burgers, sandwiches, and my favorite-wings! You can't really go wrong on your food options. If you want healthy, this isn't the spot. I recently went and had a weird experience where before even being greeted or introduced to our waiter he immediately ripped the menu from my boyfriends hand and exclaimed "could you not take these menus apart we work hard to keep them together." With a confused look we watched. I thought, "maybe he thought we took a page out and he's going to apologize for the misunderstanding??" Nope, he re-binderclipped the drafts to the menu. We were so confused bc when we sat down they were totally separate as we assumed they were supposed to be. No apology. But we were out to have a good night so we overlooked the incident. If it weren't for my love of this place or for the waiters change in attitude later in the night I probably would have left as soon as that happened. Frankly, I've had something like that happen once before with coworkers and they swore not to return. here (and they haven't.) So I bring attention to these experiences for management. I don't expect this place to fluff my ego when I go. But I'm sure there are plenty of others who would be pretty bothered by that kind of abrupt rudeness. Yet another great night out at Quarry House! Yes, it's your classic dive bar, but this one's got something special going on. It's the kind of place where you instantly feel comfortable whether you're in your 20s or your 60s, a surprisingly large space where you can hang out with friends, enjoy some great craft beers, and enjoy some great pub grub - especially their delicious burgers that just happen to be half price on Mondays. Score! On this visit, I went for the Afterburner, and you'll know why it's named that once you read what's on top of the burger: four-alarm sauce, jalapeño, and pepperjack... spicy good! Served along with their tater tots, this burger will satisfy any chili-head (and then some). Of course, you need a good local beer to complement a hearty burger, and the choices listed in their 'beericulum vitae' are many. Having spent many a night at the Wharf Rat in Baltimore, the choice was easy: the Oliver's Coventry Cream Nitro Red, a smooth ale that's perfect on a hot summer's night. I came in here once back in my college days with a couple of friends, and the place was dark, the service was mediocre at best, and the food, and the entire vibe and ambiance were just off. I remember nothing really standing out in a good way in terms of price, food, service, and I never returned. Sure, Quarry might be centrally located on Georgia Ave not far from Ellsworth place, but you are better off going elsewhere like the Mix Bar and Grille for a drink, at least you can find it and it is not hidden in a dark, spooky basement. I also did not like the fact that the establishment itself did not have diverse clientele considering how diverse Downtown Silver Spring is. It had the guys and I feel like we were in some back woods, rural town somewhere that lacked diversity whether through staff or patrons. read more

It was sort of trying to be The Black Cat for well fed 30 yr old millennials. No one too friendly, everything too loud, and a juke box you can't hear over the hum of extroverts. If you are the type to associate room temperature attention with New York style coolness, then they tick enough of those boxes. Be prepared for a possible big disappointment if you order carry out or delivery. Not sure if the overall food quality has changed dramatically in the past year or if our bad experience was a one off. It's also possible that they just provide less than quality carry out!?? The QH is a well known "best place for burgers" in DTSS, but that wasn't even slightly true tonight. Not only was our order incorrect, but the burger meat was dry, tough and appeared to be either pre-frozen or that ready made type of burger meat that look like mass produced flattened pressed patties. The burger was overcooked and the onion rings were dry and old. Perhaps they just gave us someone else's order that wasn't picked up? Regardless, it bore zero resemblance to the quality of burgers we have eaten when dining in and little resemblance to what we ordered. Such a disappointment and waste of money when you look forward to something, go out to pick it up and then get home to find out the $16 burgers are prepared wrong and look like frozen processed crap. Lesson learned to always ck the order before heading out!! And, next time we are in the mood for a handmade juicy cheeseburger, we'll either go somewhere else or make our own. read more
