I could go on and on about Suffer City. First, a little background about me: when I started…read moretraining with Jason I hadn't exercised in 11 years. No joke, 11 years! Long story short, I had some joint damage in my left ankle and knee and was scared to exercise. The doctor way-back-when told me that I'd probably always have damaged joints and trouble exercising. I also had TRIPLETS a few years ago and gained a lot of weight that hadn't come off. A friend motivated me to just give it a shot and try exercising. I started training with Jason and at another gym too--one of those "boot camp" type places. Working with Jason, I changed my diet, started exercising consistently, and pretty quickly lost almost 30 pounds. And I did a Spartan race, which I still can't believe.
The other gym I tried--and most other gyms I've tried--are intimidating, too cliquey, too crowded, and I didn't see results. The boot camp had these weird workouts that seemed totally insurmountable and gave me a feeling of defeat before I even started (like weird "1000 rep" challenges--no, I'm not gonna get through 1000 burpees in half an hour). Suffer City is different.
Here are the great things about Suffer City:
-The class sizes are limited, I think to about 12 people. So, you're not ramming into other people while trying to get through the workout.
-The workouts are varied--so varied! There are different sessions with totally different exercises every day. It's never boring. The sculpt sessions focus on building muscle; the move sessions focus on cardio; the lift sessions focus on lifting but the weight is varied based on your ability/what you're comfortable with. I'm always fascinated and downright impressed by all of the different exercises Jason and Danielle come up with.
-It's not cliquey. You don't walk in and feel like everyone is glaring at you. The people make this place really great. Everyone is friendly, people cheer each other on and provide motivation. And if you go at a consistent time you start to see the same people, get to know them, and look forward to seeing them. I look forward to training in the morning and seeing my usual group! When I miss a morning I get that whole feeling-of-missing-out, which motivates me to go back again.
-You don't have to be a superstar athlete to train here, but you also can be a superstar athlete and train here. Frankly, I was one of those kids who was always last picked for the team in PE. I've always sucked at sports and exercise, though I've gotten so much better training with Jason and now Danielle. But you can come in here as an adult who was a kid who sucked at PE and sports in general and train well, tone your body, and lose the fat. You can also come in here as a great athlete and learn to kick even more ass. I train with people who inspire me every day--as I'm grunting and groaning through workouts and trying not to curse too much, I see others powering through and just kicking ass; and that's not in an intimidating way, but in a way that's motivating and makes me want to kick ass too.
-The facility is great! It's slick and stocked with good weights, kettle bells, self-propelled treadmills (which take a run or two to get used to, but now I prefer them to the treadmills that do the running for you--plus, the self-propelled ones seem safer), assault bikes (with which you'll have a love-hate relationship), monkey bars, these cool ever-so-slightly squishy boxes of varying sizes for box jumps, medicine balls (I can't remember if there's a modern term for those things), pull up bars, and other stuff I'm probably forgetting. OH--heart rate monitors! You can buy a relatively inexpensive heart rate monitor and watch your heart rate on the TV monitors. This is really cool, and when you feel like you're at your limit and dying it's nice to look up and verify that, yes, I'm at 93% of my max heart rate right now and not just insane.
-You'll see results. This isn't like a big box gym where you kind of just go through the motions, don't really get out of breath, and wonder why you're not getting any better at training, losing any weight, or whatever you goal may be. You work out to exhaustion--and that makes you get consistently better. After training here I have more energy during the day and hell, I'm usually in a better mood and can handle more of whatever junk the day throws my way.
-If you show up a little early there's time to stretch and foam roll before the session, and there's a cool-down period built in. Even if you're not early, there's stretching and prep before the session starts, and a short run and bike to get your heart rate up. I love this because at the last gym where I trained, there was none of that--and I always felt like I was gonna injure myself just showing up, not stretching at all, and launching into some insane workout.
-Finally, the price! The prices are totally reasonable, especially for small class sizes. GO!!
