Quality Tech - Having my car serviced - Body Shops Near Me - Oakland, California

I took my car to QualityTech Automotive for a water pump replacement. The repair had to be done twice because the first part failed. Shortly after the repair, my A/C stopped working, and the car began feeling unsafe to drive. These issues did not exist before the service. The service itself was very expensive, and now I am being told that fixing the new problems will cost nearly twice as much as what I already paid. In other words, I paid a high price for a repair that did not resolve the situation and left me with additional costs. When I returned to the shop, they denied responsibility and offered no meaningful solution. I was left with unresolved issues and significant unexpected expenses. Overall, this was a frustrating and stressful experience. I would not return and cannot recommend this shop based on my experience. read more

Poor Customer Service - 0 Stars Where do I even begin. I have a 1990 Firebird, and before bringing it in, I called the shop to confirm they could work on my car. I explained that it had several issues--most noticeably, it sputters when I press the gas. I was told yes, they could take it. Based on that assurance, I had my car towed to the shop. After looking at it, the mechanic told me, "It's too much work for me, so I'm not going to work on it." I was stunned. I had it towed there because they said they would take the job. I even told them I was willing to pay whatever it cost to get it fixed. I was told, "It's not about the money. I don't have time," and then he simply walked away. I even took time off work because they told me they would work on my car. Instead, I was dismissed without any explanation or attempt to help. He just looked at me and walked away. I am filing a complaint with AAA as well as the Auto Better Business Bureau. No customer should be treated this way read more

What an amazing owner and mechanic, Bruce!! What a find and recommended by our Tow guy Mike (AAA). He explained everything and really took care of our repair. Fixed what was needed and let us know what we could do later or if at all. Fair pricing and was very thorough. He even caught some other repairs needed before it was too late (like worn break pads and leaky water pump!!!). Showed us pictures of the damage and what he worked on. Nice to have our new "go to" repair/body shop! Definitely chat with Bruce and you can feel confident your vehicle will be repaired and you won't be gouged on pricing. In business for 43yrs in Oakland and even taught car repair at the local college by doing!! read more

I had to have my Subaru towed over a 100 miles to get back home and triple-a recommended this shop and I'm so glad they did. All the lights came on and my car was just dead. I was able to come in at 8 in the morning and explain to them what happened and by 2 PM, they had figured out what was wrong and fixed it and allowed me to pick up my car after hours. They were fast and hilarious and a great price. As a single mom trying to survive in the Bay Area, I was so thankful for their service. read more

Dont ever leave reviews but will now. Brought my car in at 10 am for diagnostics. He took it in and said it will be ready by the end of the day. I called at 515 pm to get an update as I hadn't heard a word. (they close at 530) He told me he can keep it until Monday, parked in the street or I can come pick it now. Thankful I live nearby. I went to pick it up and won't be going back. All I ask is honesty and communication, and I got neither. read more

I took my car to QT after a ground squirrel had chewed through a bunch of hoses connected to the wiper washer fluid reservoir, among other things. They replaced all the damaged hoses and charged me what amounted to one hour's worth of work by the hourly-fee metrics of another shop I had contacted, which had also quoted quadruple that amount for replacing the reservoir, which was not the actual problem. Given the difficulty of accessing the parts at issue (not the kind of work you can just reach in from the top and do), I don't even know how they managed this without having to charge more. When I tried to add a tip, he refused. These are the guys doing hard work for a good price while a lot of other shops are hardly working. They keep busy, so go early. read more

Bruce and his shop are fantastic. This is our second time bringing one of our cars here (the first time, he brought our 2003 VW Jetta back to life for an extremely reasonable price). Today, we brought our Honda Odyssey in because of a flat tire and a broken tail light. Dropped off at 10am and the car was done by 1pm. The amount we paid was shockingly low compared to what other garages were estimating. Not only is this place super reasonable in price, Bruce is incredibly funny and nice. It's like dropping your car off at your favorite uncle's house. He's just wonderful. read more

I just moved to Oakland and don't have a "Go To Spot" for mechanical work so was in a rut when I was driving from Tahoe to Bay Area. My power steering wheel stopped working (scary, I know) during thanksgiving week. I called about 15 different mechanics and had a lot of guys tell me that they weren't able to quote me a price or an approximation or get me in until a week later due to the holiday. I called AAA and they recommended a to check out their preferred vendors and we just so happen to find Quality Tech. I called them after hours (around 6/6:30) not expecting anyone to answer but the owner Bruce did. I was so surprised. He was very patient on the phone and listened to what I had to explain and he mentioned that my car might be two things - the belt being one of them, which it was. I loved that he quoted me a low and high price range - just so I had an idea. He even was able to take me in the next day, which was the day before Thanksgiving. After I dropped my car off, I spoke to Bruce for a bit. Within an hour after I dropped off the car, Bruce texted me the issue with my car and gave me a price that seemed pretty decent. Not really sure what to compare it to but he had to get new parts and was able to fix it within a few hours. I was very impressed and am so glad that I was able to find my new go to mechanic in the East Bay. I highly recommend him to anyone! read more

Quality Tech Automotive does solid work and values their customers. It's a place you'd probably pass up without a second thought. Off of International, there are a million places to take your car but stop by and get a consult for your more important work. They've got a contract with Oakland PD.. I've seen crown vics in there. That's gotta count for something because as we all know, cop cars are in tip top shape to bust you for going 80 on the 880. I recently took my old faithful there for its 10th birthday for a brake job (both), all 4 tires, oil change, transmission fluid, strut, belt, smog check, gasket and a few other minor things. Nuts right?? Right. My car is aging. Anyway, they gave me the best price around and did it in 1.5 days b/c I told them I needed the car ASAP. I say go there for your larger jobs because you can get your smog check or oil change cheaper elsewhere with a coupon in the mail. But these guys take great care and do good work. They followed up with the work done on my car and had me bring it in to check on how things were. BRUCE is your man and he seems a bit cold but it's just his dry sense of humor... told him my car veers right when i drive fast he said "slow down" without a smile. But he takes his work seriously. My dad's known him for more than 20 years and never had a problem once or done some shotty or unnecessary job. He's also co-owner of a body shop a few blocks down worth checking out as well. Check it out, get a consult, can't hurt! read more

I always trust Bruce. And I really don't trust people working on my car. And he gives me discounts at times and is as quick as possible. Highly recommend. He's usually pretty busy, but squeezes me in and his staff are super friendly. Be careful with your car in the surrounding area; otherwise, I recommend. read more

Bruce and the rest of folks provide Honest and Excellent service. I'll be taking my car here for all of my automotive needs.

I needed an oil change for my car. Bruce had previously changed the oil in one of my other cars & I had to wait a few hours. He told me, he opens at 8:30 am & if I came in early, he could probably get me out fairly fast. Today, I called at 8:30ish & asked if they could do an oil change & get me out by 10 am. Bruce was able to accommodate me. Felix was working on my car, discovered a head gasket leak & also saw that my cabin & engine air filters we're filthy. I gave them permission to change the filter also. Thank you for checking my air filters & telling me about the oil leak. I will make an appt to have it repaired in the future. It was Great doing business w/Bruce @ Quality Tech. read more

Fast, honest and reliable. They took my broken down jeep off the tow truck and had it sounding brand new in two days. Also being in my early 20s and living alone, it's really hard to find a mechanic who's not condescending or trying to take advantage of me. Gone here twice now and won't be going anywhere else. Felt super taken care of. Thank you, Bruce, you're the best!! read more

I came to Quality Tech for the first time after my VW died on me. Bruce was very helpful in fixing the car quickly and I brought it there until VW recalled my car. Highly recommend Bruce and his team. read more

Bruce is the absolute best. Best prices, quick turnaround, no BS. The absolute best mechanic I've dealt with in 35 years of driving. A+++. read more

This Place Is Honest Respectful and does Excellent Work! I came in because I thought my alternator was bad on my 2010 Honda Oddeysey that I had replaced by them a year ago. I've tried my best to get Bruce to do work I didn't need done. First I diagnosed a starter problem, then it was a radiator issue, then I needed my tire replaced. He fixed all of those without doing the things I predicted for a fraction of the cost. That's why he's the mechanic and I'm not. I'm headed there now for an oil change, it's the only issue I ever get right! read more

Bruce and his shop might be the most honest mechanics in town. I went there today to get my brakes repaired and after careful inspection he was honest and suggested the work I needed really should be covered under my warranty. This news after the Ford Dealership in San Leandro conveniently told me it was out of warranty so I would pay! He could have just done the repairs and got the money in the books but he was fair and honest. And, I tried to tip and he wouldn't take the extra money. I'll def recommend him and go back when I'm out of warranty. read more

My car died and they did a quick job of determining the engine was seized. Reasonable charges.

I love Bruce he is the Car Mechanic Master of his trade ask anyone in that field so I trust him and I like bringing it to him and I leave and he calls me an hour later after looks over the car and tells me everything that needs to be repaired even stuff I didn't bring it in for and at that moment I have him repair what needs to be fixed and then maybe other things or I have the option to wait until I can afford it. Bruce has comparable prices to local shops in the area but he does excellent work...I don't go anywhere else read more

I've used quality Tech Automotive a number of times - all very satisfactory. I've had A/C compressors installed, Brakes, Tune-ups, smog tests, etc. - again all very cost effective and satisfactory. One of the vehicles was a Mercedes 500 SL that needed a new A/C compressor. Mercedes cost was to be $3700. Quality Tech's cost was $1800 for the exact same compressor. These guys are very competent and very customer service oriented. It's good to have a place you can trust and go to when needed. Give them a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

UPDATE: So the battery was not something that Quality Tech caused, but WOW it is unbelievable that they missed the cause of the problem when they went over and my van and found issues from bumper to bumper. This was a fairly obvious one - the only obvious problem, actually. The alternator and serpentine belt were bad, which explains the one weird sound the engine made. It was only really bad when the heater was on, but it was definitely audible all the time because now that its been replaced, its so quiet. The alternator was overcharging the battery causing it to bubble up and leak. I had this in mind as a possible cause from research and talking to gear head friends. And it totally makes sense. QT said I needed a new battery solely because the cap was missing and the only way to get a cap was to get a new battery. Or you take one off an old battery like my buddy at MC radiators did for me just to be nice. The overpriced battery he wanted to sell me would have been a waste of money. Also had two different shops that I went to after QT confirmed that they exaggerated some of problems, like needing front brakes and rotors ASAP. My front rotors are fine and my pads are at 30%. Not good, but Bruce feigned concern for my safety and said that I shouldn't be driving it. Funny - for breaks so terrible, they still stop on a dime and make zero noise. I'll be finding a kick ass break shop for those soon. Had the electrical done at Pacific Auto Electric on E.12th and 10th Ave. - fantastic service! And his parts were priced considerably less than what I would have gotten them for, where as other people mark their parts up more than they need to. read more

If I ever live in Oakland/East Bay, this is where I would bring my car for maintenance/repair. Quality Tech is one of the AAA approved repair shops. The owner, Bruce, delivers prompt service and he is very knowledgeable. He will call you back to give you status update, like he says he will. His words are reliable and he will not take advantage of those of us who are not at all familiar with car mechanism. read more

Finally a place I feel I can trust 100%. I went here for a 2nd opinion on some expensive repairs - their quote was 1/3 the price of the dealership. Since then, I come here for everything and their prices and assessments are great every time. They often tell you that something needs to be done, but not for another 6 months or a year. Can I give Bruce 6 stars? read more

Went to Quality Tech Auto Repair on a referral from a friend formerly in law enforcement. Evidently, a lot of law enforcement types bring their personal vehicles to Bruce of Quality Tech. That little fact sold me on coming here. Quality Tech is very professional. They were open and ready for us as promised. Our car was finished as promised and the price for repairs seemed right. We spoke to Bruce himself when we picked up our car and he was very personable, accommodating, and informative. read more

I have had a few services performed at Quality Tech and so far so good. It is hard to find a 'good' mechanic within the Bay Area and Bruce and his specialists are great. They provided a diagnostic at a reasonable price in comparison to other mechanics and auto repair locations. I used them as a 2nd opinion. The other services are fairly new but no problems yet. I definitely recommend them and yes I am a fan. read more

This shop is amazing. My Honda Civic broke down on the bay bridge and we had to have it towed. We had no idea who to go to so we asked the tow truck driver and he happened to also work for this shop. He called his boss and had him stay later for us and check the car out. The estimate was just that, an estimate and it ended up needed to be adjusted when the work got done but Bruce the owner, gave us a great deal on the work that we got done. Saved us hundreds of dollars and was able to get the job done right and quickly. Bruce is so awesome that he even fixed my bumper that i had just gotten "fixed" a month or so ago and he didn't even tell me until he called later to see how the car was doing. 5 Stars!! home town feel with great pricing and amazing customer service- read more

I've been really well taken care of by the mechanics at Quality Tech. I'm particular, the owner Bruce has gone out of his way to make sure that my car is safe. It's old, but for many reasons, I'm not replacing it yet. They do their due diligence every time. Recommendations are forthcoming, but there's no pressure to take care of unnecessary extras. I've been taking my car to this shop regularly for over a decade. Rates are market appropriate, and more often than not they discount the work. I feel very comfortable recommending Quality Tech to you. read more

Bruce is the best! He helped navigate getting my insurance to cover damage to my Prius due to a previous accident.

A+ service Bruce and his team provided excellent care for my car recently when the alternator failed. The situation involved a breakdown on a freeway on-ramp in heavy afternoon traffic, as well as multiple problems with the electrical system. QualityTech repaired my car within a day. The mechanic, Carlos, explained the problems clearly and patiently, showed me the replaced parts, answered my questions, and advised on how to avoid problems with the electrical system in the future. Even the towing crew were wonderful. Bruce called to make sure I got home safely when I left my car for repair. Every person associated with Quality Tech provided excellent service--the mechanics, towing crew, the office, Bruce himself--all were professional, hardworking, and helpful. read more

My car stalled out on 880 near the Coliseum, and I asked AAA to find a repair shop near where I was. I was towed to Quality Tech. STAY AWAY FROM THIS SHADY PLACE, DON'T RISK THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. I'm making this review on behalf of my mother, who doesn't know how to use Yelp. But what they tried to pull on my mom is inexcusable and must be known to everybody thinking about going to this place. My mom's car needed the fuel pump in her Mercedes replaced, so she took it here. After 4 days, she came back, and it was replaced! HOWEVER, she looked at her odometer after the repair, and it was broken with only dashes showing. So, my mother brings up how the odometer was broken with Bruce, the manager. Bruce claims that it came in like that! This is RIDICULOUS of course, my mom knows better and had noted the mileage prior to bringing it in on the (100% functional) odometer. Who do these guys think they're kidding? Who is going to not remember that their odometer was working? Anyway, after having to argue with them just to fix something that THEY BROKE, they put it back to a functional state. GUESS WHAT, THE CAR WAS DRIVEN FOR 34 MILES BY THEM. Is that why it took 4 days to finish? So they could replace the fuel pump in 1 day and then joyride it for the next 3? Bruce could have AT LEAST filled up the gas tank(which he didn't even reimburse her for). How do dishonest places like this even stay in business? Just stay away from here and save yourself from having to deal with this shadiness. If you dare go here, prepare yourself for a headache. read more

My battery died and the tow truck had it towed to this garage. The driver graciously explained my need to the mechanic and he quickly attended to my car. It was a chilly afternoon, so he kindly offered me a seat in the office. The office manager was so re-assuring that he would take care of my need, I was a bit nervous because I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for a new battery. Plus, I didn't want to be taken advantage of (just to be sure I priced some batteries while waiting on roadside assistance). But it wasn't even an issue, diagnostic, replacement and labor all came to $104. They backed my car into the garage and QUICKLY replaced my battery and sent me on my way (it only took around 15 minutes). This is a huge difference from the dealership and they were pleasant and professional. Highly recommend them! read more

Great place to go for guidance. Bruce looked at my car for free, helped me talk to the dealership to see if it would be under warranty, and helped me get my car there.
