I took my car to QualityTech Automotive for a water pump replacement. The repair had to be done twice because the first part failed. Shortly after the repair, my A/C stopped working, and the car began feeling unsafe to drive. These issues did not exist before the service. The service itself was very expensive, and now I am being told that fixing the new problems will cost nearly twice as much as what I already paid. In other words, I paid a high price for a repair that did not resolve the situation and left me with additional costs. When I returned to the shop, they denied responsibility and offered no meaningful solution. I was left with unresolved issues and significant unexpected expenses. Overall, this was a frustrating and stressful experience. I would not return and cannot recommend this shop based on my experience. read more

Poor Customer Service - 0 Stars Where do I even begin. I have a 1990 Firebird, and before bringing it in, I called the shop to confirm they could work on my car. I explained that it had several issues--most noticeably, it sputters when I press the gas. I was told yes, they could take it. Based on that assurance, I had my car towed to the shop. After looking at it, the mechanic told me, "It's too much work for me, so I'm not going to work on it." I was stunned. I had it towed there because they said they would take the job. I even told them I was willing to pay whatever it cost to get it fixed. I was told, "It's not about the money. I don't have time," and then he simply walked away. I even took time off work because they told me they would work on my car. Instead, I was dismissed without any explanation or attempt to help. He just looked at me and walked away. I am filing a complaint with AAA as well as the Auto Better Business Bureau. No customer should be treated this way read more

What an amazing owner and mechanic, Bruce!! What a find and recommended by our Tow guy Mike (AAA). He explained everything and really took care of our repair. Fixed what was needed and let us know what we could do later or if at all. Fair pricing and was very thorough. He even caught some other repairs needed before it was too late (like worn break pads and leaky water pump!!!). Showed us pictures of the damage and what he worked on. I had to have my Subaru towed over a 100 miles to get back home and triple-a recommended this shop and I'm so glad they did. All the lights came on and my car was just dead. I took my car to QT after a ground squirrel had chewed through a bunch of hoses connected to the wiper washer fluid reservoir, among other things. They replaced all the damaged hoses and charged me what amounted to one hour's worth of work by the hourly-fee metrics of another shop I had contacted, which had also quoted quadruple that amount for replacing the reservoir, which was not the actual problem. Given the difficulty of accessing the parts at issue (not the kind of work you can just reach in from the top and do), I don't even know how they managed this without having to charge more. When I tried to add a tip, he refused. These are the guys doing hard work for a good price while a lot of other shops are hardly working. They keep busy, so go early. read more

I just moved to Oakland and don't have a "Go To Spot" for mechanical work so was in a rut when I was driving from Tahoe to Bay Area. My power steering wheel stopped working (scary, I know) during thanksgiving week. I called about 15 different mechanics and had a lot of guys tell me that they weren't able to quote me a price or an approximation or get me in until a week later due to the holiday. I called AAA and they recommended a to check out their preferred vendors and we just so happen to find Quality Tech. I called them after hours (around 6/6:30) not expecting anyone to answer but the owner Bruce did. I was so surprised. He was very patient on the phone and listened to what I had to explain and he mentioned that my car might be two things - the belt being one of them, which it was. I loved that he quoted me a low and high price range - just so I had an idea. He even was able to take me in the next day, which was the day before Thanksgiving. After I dropped my car off, I spoke to Bruce for a bit. Within an hour after I dropped off the car, Bruce texted me the issue with my car and gave me a price that seemed pretty decent. Not really sure what to compare it to but he had to get new parts and was able to fix it within a few hours. Off of International, there are a million places to take your car but stop by and get a consult for your more important work. They've got a contract with Oakland PD.. I've seen crown vics in there. That's gotta count for something because as we all know, cop cars are in tip top shape to bust you for going 80 on the 880. I recently took my old faithful there for its 10th birthday for a brake job (both), all 4 tires, oil change, transmission fluid, strut, belt, smog check, gasket and a few other minor things. Nuts right?? Right. My car is aging. Anyway, they gave me the best price around and did it in 1.5 days b/c I told them I needed the car ASAP. I say go there for your larger jobs because you can get your smog check or oil change cheaper elsewhere with a coupon in the mail. But these guys take great care and do good work. They followed up with the work done on my car and had me bring it in to check on how things were. BRUCE is your man and he seems a bit cold but it's just his dry sense of humor... told him my car veers right when i drive fast he said "slow down" without a smile. But he takes his work seriously. My dad's known him for more than 20 years and never had a problem once or done some shotty or unnecessary job. He's also co-owner of a body shop a few blocks down worth checking out as well. I went there today to get my brakes repaired and after careful inspection he was honest and suggested the work I needed really should be covered under my warranty. This news after the Ford Dealership in San Leandro conveniently told me it was out of warranty so I would pay! He could have just done the repairs and got the money in the books but he was fair and honest. And, I tried to tip and he wouldn't take the extra money. I've used quality Tech Automotive a number of times - all very satisfactory. I've had A/C compressors installed, Brakes, Tune-ups, smog tests, etc. - again all very cost effective and satisfactory. One of the vehicles was a Mercedes 500 SL that needed a new A/C compressor. Mercedes cost was to be $3700. Quality Tech's cost was $1800 for the exact same compressor. These guys are very competent and very customer service oriented. It's good to have a place you can trust and go to when needed. Give them a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

UPDATE: So the battery was not something that Quality Tech caused, but WOW it is unbelievable that they missed the cause of the problem when they went over and my van and found issues from bumper to bumper. This was a fairly obvious one - the only obvious problem, actually. The alternator and serpentine belt were bad, which explains the one weird sound the engine made. It was only really bad when the heater was on, but it was definitely audible all the time because now that its been replaced, its so quiet. The alternator was overcharging the battery causing it to bubble up and leak. I had this in mind as a possible cause from research and talking to gear head friends. And it totally makes sense. QT said I needed a new battery solely because the cap was missing and the only way to get a cap was to get a new battery. Or you take one off an old battery like my buddy at MC radiators did for me just to be nice. The overpriced battery he wanted to sell me would have been a waste of money. Also had two different shops that I went to after QT confirmed that they exaggerated some of problems, like needing front brakes and rotors ASAP. My front rotors are fine and my pads are at 30%. Not good, but Bruce feigned concern for my safety and said that I shouldn't be driving it. Funny - for breaks so terrible, they still stop on a dime and make zero noise. I'll be finding a kick ass break shop for those soon. Had the electrical done at Pacific Auto Electric on E.12th and 10th Ave. - fantastic service! And his parts were priced considerably less than what I would have gotten them for, where as other people mark their parts up more than they need to. read more

This shop is amazing. My Honda Civic broke down on the bay bridge and we had to have it towed. We had no idea who to go to so we asked the tow truck driver and he happened to also work for this shop. He called his boss and had him stay later for us and check the car out. A good friend referred me to Quality Tech after I failed to put oil in my Truck and blew the engine. Other places quoted me over 7K to replace the engine with a used one. QT offered to have my truck towed there and bill me later. They ordered 3 engines because the first 2 were not up to their standards. The did all of the related work in less than a week and a half....and for a significantly LOWER price than other shops in my area had quoted. They asked me to bring it back for no charge after 500 miles to re-check it and make sure it was all good. I worked with mostly Mario but everyone there was very honest, knowledgeable and reliable. It's a bit of a distance for me but I would go back to them in the future. But what they tried to pull on my mom is inexcusable and must be known to everybody thinking about going to this place. My mom's car needed the fuel pump in her Mercedes replaced, so she took it here. After 4 days, she came back, and it was replaced! HOWEVER, she looked at her odometer after the repair, and it was broken with only dashes showing. So, my mother brings up how the odometer was broken with Bruce, the manager. Bruce claims that it came in like that! This is RIDICULOUS of course, my mom knows better and had noted the mileage prior to bringing it in on the (100% functional) odometer. Who do these guys think they're kidding? Who is going to not remember that their odometer was working? Anyway, after having to argue with them just to fix something that THEY BROKE, they put it back to a functional state. GUESS WHAT, THE CAR WAS DRIVEN FOR 34 MILES BY THEM. Is that why it took 4 days to finish? So they could replace the fuel pump in 1 day and then joyride it for the next 3? Bruce could have AT LEAST filled up the gas tank(which he didn't even reimburse her for). How do dishonest places like this even stay in business? Just stay away from here and save yourself from having to deal with this shadiness. If you dare go here, prepare yourself for a headache. read more

My battery died and the tow truck had it towed to this garage. The driver graciously explained my need to the mechanic and he quickly attended to my car. It was a chilly afternoon, so he kindly offered me a seat in the office. The office manager was so re-assuring that he would take care of my need, I was a bit nervous because I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for a new battery. Plus, I didn't want to be taken advantage of (just to be sure I priced some batteries while waiting on roadside assistance). But it wasn't even an issue, diagnostic, replacement and labor all came to $104. They backed my car into the garage and QUICKLY replaced my battery and sent me on my way (it only took around 15 minutes).
