I particularly enjoyed their iced coffee with cream and their housemade brown sugar nutmeg simple syrup--a recipe the owner and coffee master was more than happy to share after I admired it. ​They also carry a small but pleasantly unexpected selection of artisan foods from around the Finger Lakes area, including granola, shortbread cookies, pastas, specialty salts, and more. Plus, they sell their beans by the pound--beans which they source directly from coffee growers and roast weekly on-site. ​Additionally, following the farm's first dahlia show this September, I was able to purchase some of their dahlia seeds--which came complete with expert planting and transplanting advice from the owner. ​Overall, the pricing is fair, with the canned cold brews leaning slightly expensive, but in a pleasant, small-splurge kind of way. ​While there are tables available, the space is better suited for catching up with a small group of friends rather than setting up to work for hours. ​The hospitality is exceptional, and the entire experience feels deeply connected to the farm. It seems like Union Place typically has an excellent and varied selection of different beans, but it was too close to Christmas and they were running low on it all. My friend came out from behind the counter, and helped my navigate what was still available. I got a lot of beans, they ground them for me for the right filters (while I sat in a very comfortable chair), and I was out of there. If you actually drink coffee, I bet you'll like this place even better than I do.

The only thing that stood out to me was that there wasn't much of a greeting or acknowledgment when I walked in, but it wasn't a huge issue. The seating was okay. The chair I chose wasn't the most comfortable for an extended stay, but it got the job done. There was also some rock music playing during my visit, which helped create a casual atmosphere. I didn't order any coffee or food this time around, so I can't speak to the menu yet. This visit was more about finding a place to work and unwind for a bit. Would I come back? Yes. While I'm still searching for my go-to coffee lounge in Syracuse, Recess is definitely a spot I'd visit again.
