This is my favorite restaurant and I come regularly for Sunday brunch bringing grandchildren, friends, out of town visitors, and business associates. The place is a gem because of the exceptional menu, the beautiful clean bright environment and the efficient discreet service that makes the dining experience here elegant and comfortable. The superbly delicious selection reflects the best of American traditional menus but, if you really look closely, it is all exceptionally fresh and emphasizes the healthy. There is a strong emphasis on vegetables which are so enticingly prepared and displayed that they have turned my Sunday brunch into an almost totally "green" experience.
I love to start with the salads which are just too attractive to pass up. I go for the crisp greens, crunchy cauliflower, fresh broccoli, crumbled eggs, dried fruit, seeds, sliced beets and add in those extra healthy things you are supposed to eat but would never have at home. You can mix your own dressing with a variety of oils and vinegars, go with the standards (ranch, blue cheese, french, etc.), or experiment with the unusual hot (as in temperature, not spicy) salad dressing which turned out to be an unexpected treat.
For those who like premixed salads, Q. Cumbers offers a choice of pasta, vegetarian and grain dishes to please any palate. Last week I tried a heavenly creation of large juicy white raisins with various seeds, grains, and greens, mixed with a semi sweet sauce -- a most unusual mixture that turned out to be almost addictive. It was light and rich at the same time. Chicken Noodle Soup is also available every Sunday in case you wish to make this a several course lunch feast.
Of course they have the usual breakfast bar: scrambled eggs, a cheese and egg bake with broccoli, sausage, bacon, fried or baked potato chunks, thick waffles with hot maple syrup, oversized home made cinnamon roles dripping with confectioners sugar icing, muffins, and tiny chocolate cupcakes. Warm tortillas and taco filling are always available and on the other side of the room you will find mounds of cut fruit including fresh sweet watermelon, ripe cantaloupe, plump strawberries, peaches, and lots more.
I particularly like the the actual physical space which is bright and sunny with windows taking up three whole walls of a hexagonal building facing across the parking lot to Whole Foods. It is scrupulously clean and the tables are separated by low walls that give you privacy without isolation. The staff is almost invisible but the used plates are whisked away as soon as you get up for your next course and the tables are kept clean while you dine. That makes it easy to have a serious conversation.
Speaking of serious conversations, it is great for children, too, because you can sit in a semi private area and no one will notice flying food, small hands smashing into your plate, or hear you try to keep your temper while you explain, in a most civilized manner (while trying to keep your voice down), why this behavior is not accepted in polite society. The staff will clean up the mess quietly and discretely so you will hardly notice and not even get embarrassed. But do leave an extra tip for this attentive service. read more
