This review is based off of a delivery that my sister in law had sent to our house last week as a surprise after seeing their interview on Good Day Sacramento! I have never had Pushkins before, but it was always on my list to try even though I was a little hesitant. I honestly thought that gluten-free/vegan would mean dry and lack in flavor, but Pushkins is anything but! I had no idea what was in the box that was sent, I know there a cinnamon roll type of pastry and a lemon pound cake maybe, but OMG...was everything in the box delicious! So moist and flavorful...I devoured the whole box in 2 days. I am not a huge breakfast pastry fan, but I find myself now dreaming of more Pushkins. I see that they also offer different cakes, cookies and even cupcakes on their menu which are my absolute weakness! One of my favorite gf/df/v bakery of all time!! Pre-COVID, this bakery was bustling with people, coming in and out all the time. I found that street parking can be tricky sometimes. So if I found myself circling around the block I used to park in the CO-OP lot, if you don't intend to stay too long. Alternatively, you can park in the structure, too. Pushkin's bakery has scrumptious baked goods to die for, in my opinion. The first time I tried it I was so pleased! I haven't found any other baked goods quite like theirs. Have been wanting to try for some time now. My sister is gluten free and the last time she visited from Reno, we tried to get some brunch around 11 and the wait was over an hour. We couldn't stay since she needed to get back so we made sure to go early the next time she visited. Given it's located in midtown you'll have to street park. Meters are free on Sundays. They don't have an online reservation booking, but yon can put yourself on their waitlist through Yelp. We didn't have to wait when we dropped in around 9:45 on the 4th of July. We started with some hot coffee because the restaurant was freezing. We also started with the basket of baked foods to share which my sister was excited about. It came with 4 large gluten free pastries to share and they were all delicious. For breakfast I went with the waffle supreme which was a giant waffle, two eggs and bacon. It's a big plate of food but it's all delicious and you can't even tell it's gluten free. It's a really hot spot so be sure to get on that waitlist because it's worth the stop in. read more

Calling all Vegans! Pushkin's is pushing vegan options if you have to make that sweet tooth happy...this place will solve it. The service was excellent and very friendly and the vegan goodies hit that sugary plant spot!!! The chef definitely knows how to bake up some goodies. Never have I ever thought that GF or vegan pastries would be SO GOOD! I always imagined them dry, but definitely not Pushkin's pastries. I love their selection of pastries available. This is definitely a spot I'm going to next time I'm in Sac. The only thing I wish they offered was delivery through a service like - DoorDash, UberEats, etc... I recently called them to find out if they offered delivery so I can send a box of pastries to my cousin who lives in the area and celebrating an anniversary, however, they confirmed they don't offer that service. TIP:: go early! After rave reviews from family and friends during a visit in town I decided to give them a whirl. On a Monday mid day I was completely blown away at the minimal selection. The cashier said they had a random day where they were sold out of everything but 4 different desserts and even the sandwich we wanted they ran out of bread. Hesitant and hungry we still ordered a sandwich and cupcake to share. We ordered the portobello cruzer which had mayo, fig jam, roasted portobello mushrooms, pesto, spinach, onion and tomato. The sandwich had so much jam the bottom piece of bread was soaked and was mush while I was trying to hold and eat it. Maybe the change in bread made that big of difference. With that said it wasn't as appetizing due to the texture. For dessert we ordered the vegan chocolate s'mores cupcake. The cupcake was moist and delightful with no sign it's vegan. Bummed they were out of what we wanted however, this was a good cupcake. I would still love to come again and try another sandwhich and dessert and definitely will come much earlier. read more

I went to Midtown Pushkins today about 30 minutes ago and ordered 2 vegan sandwiches and 2 vegan pastries. I had a mask with me but not on because I was having a rough morning so I was offered to purchase my food outside which was great. I started eating my Portbella Cruiser [vegan] Sandwich and on my third bite into the sandwich I tasted an old familiar product. As my nose was in right there next to it when I bite down, I realized it is in my mouth. It was BACON. I saw the bacon and realized I had just had bacon. I cried!! I'm still crying!! I spit my food out so that's why the sandwich looks torn up. I called Puskins and explained what happened and even asked if this was a cruel sick "get back at her" type of thing (& the bacon is on one side of the sandwich and not the other) all because I ordered my food outside. I couldn't think of any other reason why this could happen. The explanation was, though they have separate tongs for their mushrooms and bacon, a piece might have fell into the mushrooms when making another sandwich that was not vegan. I am confused because how is bacon falling into their mushrooms? Are there no lids? Is bacon grease dripping inside their mushrooms when making other sandwiches? I'm sick to my stomach right now. I understand employees make "simple" mistakes if this in fact was not intentional. However, I think the business should have more sanitary or mindful practices since they serve vegan food and this population of people who truly care & are mindful for the animals. The employee apologized to me, as he refunded my sandwich and I told him thanks but don't be sorry to be, be sorry for the animal but thanks for your help with the refund. I needed to order a dairy free cake that was preferably gluten free for my daughter's birthday so I looked up Pushkins online. I was very surprised at the number of choices they had and they all looked absolutely gorgeous. After a lengthy discussion with my daughter to make sure I ordered the perfect one, we decided on a mixed berry ganache. The person on the other end of the phone when I placed my order was very patient and helpful. I was able to place my order and get a pickup date and time of my own choosing. Easy peasy! The cake was moist and delicious. It did not have exactly the same texture and flavor as a cake made with dairy and cake flour but why should it? I am big on compartmentalizing and I think it should stand on its own for what it is. I absolutely love their (vegan) baked goods and Adult Grilled Cheese Sandwich. However, upon my last visit I had ordered the Banh Mi and was pretty disappointed. The Banh Mi was completely drenched in liquid, probably from the pickled vegetables. As you can see from my photos, the bread became soggy and mush. While I appreciate the sandwich being completely stuffed, please drain the liquid from the vegetables before assembling them in the sandwich. The taste was still there when I opened it (under half hour after order), but the texture was all gone. This was a completely different experience from the sandwich I received a few years ago. We were looking for a pastry in the area, so we decided to stop here (thanks Yelp!). The place is on a cute side street, quaint, with some outdoor seating. They only allow a couple people in at once, so you may have to wait (it is a popular spot!). There is a variety of coffee cakes, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, cookies, sandwiches and drinks. I decided to get a coffee cake, the blackberry chocolate flavor based on recommendations by the friendly staff. I will say they're not cheap, but I also did not realize everything was vegan and gluten free at first, so the pricing is totally fair. Side note - if you're not looking for vegan/ gluten free, this is totally still a place to check out - I couldn't taste a difference! My coffee cake was moist, brimming with fruit and chocolate, and massive. I couldn't help but finish the whole thing! My friends tried the cinnamon roll and different sandwiches. The sandwiches were DELICIOUS! Fresh, crusty bread, thick slices of bacon on the BLT. ***This bakery specializes in gluten-free/dairy-free/vegan desserts (not all of the desserts here have this whole triad though so might want to check the official website for details on certain treats). Felt that I needed to add this disclaimer as some people might have the expectation that the desserts here should have the VerY ExAct taste and texture of those at typical bakeries. Anyway, I've heard good things about this place and since my sister's birthday was coming up, I decided to order a cake here (luckily my sister is also open to trying food spots). I made an online order for a naked cake in the salted pecan flavor and got a complimentary barracuda cupcake with it (sweet!). Salted pecan naked cake: the cake layers reminded me of a tasty pancake with its sponginess and great combination with the candied pecans. Very appreciative that the candied pecans had the right amount of sweetness to it (I don't have the biggest sweet tooth). A slice of this cake could easily pass as a breakfast dessert (cake for breakfast?? Yesss.). I didn't care too much about the frosting though. I get that the overall flavor of the cake is salted pecan but there was a little too much salt added into the frosting. Couldn't really taste any of the natural maple flavor that was supposed to be in it. Barracuda cupcake: This cupcake is pretty much a chocolate cupcake; along with the chocolate cake batter, chocolate chunks are included along with chocolate frosting and a chocolate ganache finish. Sounds like a super-sweet treat, but it's not! I love that this cupcake isn't overly rich (the chocolate chunks do give pockets of intense richness in each bite but there aren't too much of them). The whipped frosting is light and fluffy and has the right hint amount of chocolate. I can understand that some people might think that this cupcake is bland, but as someone who doesn't like overly-decadent desserts, this cupcake is my jam. This cupcake is suuuper moist also. Overall definitely makes me want to try out the other cupcake varieties at this bakery. Service: The lady behind the dessert glass case was really friendly, but the cashier lady seemed a bit lost (a trainee maybe?). I wished the cashier lady had a little bit more efficiency on processing my order pick-up especially since during these trying times only up to two customers are allowed inside the bakery. There was a line forming outside when I arrived on a Saturday at around 10 am (there isn't a dedicated order pick-up line so account for potential waiting-in-line time when deciding your order pick-up time). Oops, didn't mean to write an essay, but I'm glad that there's a bakery like this in the area for those with gluten and dairy sensitivities. Seriously, my greatest weakness as of late is cookies, so immediately after arriving in Sacramento, I just wanted a little something to snack on. A quick search for cookie brought up Pushkins so I went to check in out. Walking in, there was a short line which gave me a chance to peruse the pastry case. Immediately my eyes caught the mudpie cookie and I knew that was a non-negotiable but then I noticed a fair amount of their other choices were either vegan or gluten free which piqued my interest. And so, I also opted to try the Andes Mint Vegan Cupcake. Total came out to just over $7 with tip. Walking out, it was a no-brainer that the cookie would survive better so I stuck that in my backpack for a later time. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise I think because eating it a day later allowed it to get a little more dry and it was literally like eating the crispy chewy brownie edges in a cookie form! It was deliciously chocolate-y and totally worth the wait! I'd definitely come back just for another mudpie cookie! As for the cupcake, it was certainly instagram worthy, but it didn't really hit the spot for me. The frosting/cream didn't really work for me. When I think mint, I think refreshing...but the topping left this lingering buttery texture that just didn't go with the minty flavor. Secondly, the cupcake was on the denser side, which I already expected having had vegan goods prior. It also didn't have the strong chocolate flavor unless you hit the bites with chocolate chips - those were memorable! Those were super good! I'm so glad I found this place! I've been placed in a really strict diet by my nutritionist. This place really came in a clutch with gluten and dairy free options. I'm not able to have cornstarch at the moment, so I ordered the banana bread and zucchini bread for myself. Both are delicious! Enjoyed a few slices with a cup of coffee from around the corner. My husband, who is able to enjoy dairy, gluten and cornstarch, really enjoyed his cinnabun and blueberry coffee cake. He said he wouldn't have know it was gluten and dairy free with his cinnabun. The blueberry coffee cake did have a different flavor (maybe texture as well?) that he would've noticed something was off. But it didn't stop him from still enjoying his pastry.
