This area does not have a whole lot of parking so if you go here when the island is busy you may need to park your car a bit farther up the road to get out to check out the store. Since the new ownership, the goods in the store can be found so many places. Nothing feels unique and the store now feels soulless. Almost all of the original staff have left under the new ownership. The website still claims that this is its focus, but in reality, very few of their items fit this description. I miss the old Alair, with soul, personality, warmth, kindness, and community at its core. It's a shame that under new ownership the business lost all of that. Update: Alair has petitioned for my review to be taken down from Yelp because they didn't like that I made a negative review-I have reached out to Yelp petitioning that I didn't violate any terms.

There were many cute things and practical stationery items. I got some bunny greeting cards since I knew that they would fit in my carry-on luggage. Erica is the most unpretentious fashionista I've ever met. Since my first trip in, every purchase has been an instant favorite-thing-I-own, even though none of them felt practical at the time (and Erica's fashion sense has inspired other style! I combed the whole world for green italian leather gloves like hers and everybody likes them). On my first time in, I bought a textile sculpture (poncho? blanket? I call it my slanket) by a local artisan who reworks abandoned blankets and uses elaborate origami folds to keep from wasting any material at all. It sounds like high fashion weirdity, right? I wear that EVERY DAY. It keeps me warm and people stop me in the street to compliment my ... slanket. It's totally psychedelic and rock and roll. Next two purchases have been a hostess gift (a necklace with a pyrite) and I'm about to pick up a leather/Sterling cuff. My whole current wish list is from Hitchcock. Their in house brand stuff is amazing and creative, they're constantly changing stock and it's deliciously avant garde. No standard pearls or standard anything here. Prices range from reasonable to stratospheric (and it's really hard to tell which bauble costs $60 and which one costs a pony -- I suggest browsing or getting help; the help I've gotten from Erica has me layering bracelets for the first time in my life). Also, read their blog. If they took themselves seriously, it would be such a drag. Their wit and weirdness make me wanna be their best friend / give them american dollars.

Hallie, the instructor, was wonderful and made the class feel welcoming and easy to follow. It was great getting to know the other students too, and doing manifestation work as a group. I made a eucalyptus-scented candle and loved that we got to choose and decorate our own crystal adornments, dried flowers, and shells. Such a creative, relaxing experience. They also offer other classes like sound baths, somatic dance, etc. Highly recommend if you're looking for something fun and unique to do!

Before you go to Sankofa Boutique, take the time to look up a little bit about its story in local news articles. It is a rare feel-good narrative about a small independent business started, owned, and operated by a Black woman as a labor of love for both her own interests and the community around her. Sankofa Boutique features one of the best selections of crystals and other semiprecious gemstones in the Seattle area. All are painstakingly labeled with names and information, and the shopkeeper can often offer helpful thoughts on each. Prices are very fair value for what you get, especially in such an expensive neighborhood. The selection of lovely jewelry, interesting trinkets, candles, incense, hand-selected basic witchcraft/magic kits, and other New Age miscellanea is also outstanding. Books and Tarot/oracle decks are not Sankofa's niche (unsurprisingly considering how many other places in the area cover it instead), but the small selection there still offers some good options. This store also specializes in African imports (hence the name "Sankofa," often used for businesses and organizations built around African heritage, from a word in the Ghanaian Twi language about returning to the past to retrieve ancestral wisdom), and I recently purchased a beautiful Kenyan Maasai beaded leather cuff here. Not only is it physically comfortable, but to my spiritual senses it is a solid source of good energy. Cherika, the proprietor, has clearly painstakingly cultivated an atmosphere of cozy serenity and emotional warmth tucked away here in this little shop. She is also unfailingly kind and generous of spirit with patrons; she treats newcomers and passersby cordially and maintains great relationships with regular customers and community figures. Sankofa Boutique is an excellent choice for spending a little time browsing the small wonders of a cozy and kind corner of Capitol Hill, especially if you want to lighten your coinpurse in exchange for some exciting new treasures.
