I wont really comment on the food here, since that is not the main attraction. Hands down this is one of my favorite music venues, which is nestled in one of the most unique areas, in a somewhat hidden landscape. Travelling here, particularly in the winter is like entering an oasis, if not sometimes treacherous! You drive through some of the most remote country, through a sleepy very small town, park your car and enter this place, with it's single paned windows that have probably never been changed in lord knows how many decades, and find several people nestled inside. You'll find granola hippies, out of town urbanite hipsters, locals, ski bums and also families all here to see live music. The venue sounds great and while you probably aren't going to see a mainstream act here, I am always shocked at the quality of the muscians and acts I've seen perform on the stage. Virtually every act wants to come and play here, because while it can be a crapshoot for turnout (although there are times I couldn't grab a seat), the ambience and vibe here just can't be duplicated. Heck you can grab a few of the games, and also big stuffed animals for kids (or the kid in you, I like the blue puffer fish!!!) while you are watching the show. Prices are inexpensive, with maybe the exception of entry but I have no problem paying it cause I know this place needs to be supported. There's even a few locally brewed beer from Mountain Brewing here also which while ok, are certainly drinkable and a nice way to say thanks (all the brews are served in mason jars). The bottle list is also very solid with some great offerings. Like they say come on down... this place is an absolute must if you are in the area. Get there early too if you can. read more

Cool place. Live music most nights of the week (there usually is a cover, somewhere between $5-$10 - check their website for the price of your show). Good beer - they serve the beer from the brewery right up the street on tap. Low key atmosphere. They have a hostel upstairs - you can stay for as cheap as $20/night. It has satellite TV and pool, as well, if you're into that. If you're more of an outdoors person, you're right in the middle of the mountains. Good biking and rafting nearby. read more

I discovered the Purple Fiddle one fine summer day in 2004 by complete accident. They used to serve trout back then so Christian and Laura and I had trout three ways; trout sandwich, trout chowder, and trout sushi. Then I discovered something fantastic; in the middle of the table was a live mountain music schedule. I was intrigued. This place is also a music venue! I came back another day and I brought some more people. At night a band played and they were called Sol Driven Train, from Charleston, South Carolina. What a blast! The venue had switched ownership and the food items are different. I only wish they served more hot cooked meals but they still make amazing milkshakes and they do serve delicious chilli and beans. As a bonus, there's a guy by the name of Ned working there that lived in Chile so he speaks Spanish, so the Mexican side of my family members has someone to chat with. Although we live four hours away in the Nation's Capital, this place certainly makes the trip very worth it; a popular destination for people from D.C. to escape to. They keep an eclectic list of bands and performers ranging in many different styles of music so every weekend there's a surprise. On nights that bands perform you will see the lovely Lynea working the front door, greeting you with a friendly smile and welcoming you to the show. What a great fun place to visit! The best thing about this place is probably the excellent music acts they regularly get. The place has good acoustics and the artists are close and intimate. The food, beer and ice cream are also really good. You can eat and drink while enjoying the music. A little more seating would be nice. We were lucky to get a table on a Saturday night. read more

Okay, okay--I was here over five years ago but I remember it so fondly. I have been thinking about going back ever since and I probably will this spring. It's about 3-4 hours from where I live, but there's so much to do and see in the area (Dolly Sods, Seneca Rocks, Canaan Valley, Mountain Made) that it's well worth the trip. I want to go back and ride the bike trail (the Allegheny Highlands Trail) that's right across the street. So anyway, last time I was here I was floored that there was good vegetarian food in West By-God Virginia, which I can say, since I lived there some years ago. Also, the music was quite astounding. I didn't expect to find the quality of music right there in the middle of nowhere. The night I was there, a band that styled its music after Django Reinhardt was playing. I'll never forget it. They were great. Unfortunately, I do forget their name. Next time I make it out yonder, I reckon I'll stay at the Fiddler's Roost. I can't wait. read more

Very good place to get some grub. It is a walk up and order and they will be bring the food to you. The prices are fair and the live music is a cool touch. The best value was the kid's sandwich. It had lots of meat and 2 thick slices of bread with chips. I would recommend getting there early or at a off time because the line to order since it can get long. Came here for a wedding after party. They have live music every weekend and it's well worth dropping in for. Tons of beers to choose from and a lot of tables. The back patio is also pretty awesome. I can't comment on their food or the hostel part of the building but several folks I came with stayed and ate there and seemed to be pretty happy about the arrangement. read more

The Purple Fiddle would be remarkable only for its hospitality, its microbrew selection, its views and ambiance, or its music and cuisine - the fact that all of these coalesce into one gestalt is nothing short of miraculous. Came here for lunch after skiing in Canaan and heading back home. Wait staff was friendly, but we were greeted outside to the cook and waitress smoking cigarettes directly next to the front door. She told us she would be in in a minute and we could grab our menus off the counter. The menu is really small and doesn't offer many options. Ordered grilled cheese sandwich which was much less than satisfactory. Tomato and bread didn't taste fresh at all, and the sandwich was drenched in mayo that tasted old. The place was dirty and dusty; cobwebs littered the ceiling and the shelves near us and the whole place felt gross which made me wonder about the kitchen. The only positive was our waitress was really nice and helpful when we asked about the town and nearby cities. Unfortunately, that doesn't do enough to make us want to come back. read more

I love going to the Purple Fiddle when my husband and I venture to W. Virginia from Ligonier. You can always count on live music there on the weekend. The building is over 100 years old and is charming. Beer is always cold, not a big selection but I am sure you could find something you like to drink! Wine is good. My husband and I just recently got married. We needed to get away from the city so we came up to Wv and rented a cabin. We were in desperate need of something to eat. We stumbled across this place. OMG!!!!! We both ordered the italian sandwich and shared a bowl of the creamy chicken chili. We had to take it home. It was too much food!!!!! The sandwich was fresh and delicious. Oh and the chili, definitely the best chicken chili I have ever had. I'm picky about coffee and even their coffee was great. The customer service was awesome. Very friendly. It was a quaint little restaurant and I will be stopping by to grab a couple sandwiches to go home with me (5 hours away) Not if but when we come back this is definitely going to be a spot we'll keep coming back to. read more

My rating is mostly for the hostel, which is on the upper floors above the restaurant. One doesn't normally expect to find a good one in a small town like this, but it was exactly that if a bit basic and the price was right. I was there in mid-December when it was below freezing. The main area was quite toasty. The individual rooms were not but nothing outrageous. That main area has a fully-functional kitchen, dining area, living room and a pool table. Amazingly, the table had a full set of balls although the cues need new felt ends. There's an assortment of board games as well. They do play live music at night downstairs which is faintly audible, but I didn't find it disturbing. I ate at the restaurant twice. The food was decent. I imagine that if you want craft beer and a live show it's good but that wasn't what I was there for, mostly I was looking for a cheap and functional place to spend the night and kill time waiting for the slopes to open. For that it was a fine choice indeed! read more

I see most reviewers visited TPF during ski trips. Our extended family has developed a tradition of going for the fireworks every year around the 4th of July. Amazing, long (app 40 mins.) for a small town. We go early to browse the antique &art shops, listen to music up and down the street. And get good tables in the terrace area. The kids have fun playing knock hockey and pushing each other around in the antique wheel chair. No need for them to be quiet. The adults surely aren't. LOL Beautiful scenery. The "downtown" area reminds me of the hippie days of my youth. Lots of art with arty types walking around. Nearby is a great brewery. Served at The Purple Fiddle. When it's very busy, be prepared to stand in line for awhile to get food and ice cream. Excellent blue grass groups featured most weekends. read more

One of the coolest, tucked away cozy spots I've ever visited. The space is big and open, the service attentive and fast. We saw a bluegrass show here and it was the PERFECT venue. The atmosphere was light and fun. Never would I have expected this from a tiny town in West Virginia. We also stayed next door at the guest house where we were super comfortable. It was so nice to walk next door after dancing. The best: VCR in the room and tons of tapes. Appreciated so many quirky things about this amazing place. read more

Let's jump into it. The staff was terrible. My friends and I were not greeted. The lady working was not personable, helpful, or customer friendly. They were out of the sandwich I wanted. When I went to pay she assumed I was using cash. When I went to use my card she said I would have to pay an extra dollar for a service charge. WHAT?! The atmosphere was cool. Food was expensive. I ended up having the Italian sandwich with potato chips. The sandwich was decent. Not worth $10. The staff was the most upsetting thing and did not make me want to come back. read more

We stopped in to the Purple fiddle yesterday around lunch time to spend our afternoon in this cute town, Thomas, Wv. We ended up spending almost the entire afternoon right there. Saturday afternoon and we had live music, an excellent band out of Rappahannock county, Va. The atmosphere was inviting and wonderful, we didn't want to leave. We ordered the Special, it was a Brisket sandwich with horseradish Mayo. Phenomenal. I'll share now, I am not usually a sandwich person. With every bite of this brisket, I followed it up with a compliment on how excellent the sandwich was! Once finished, we walked out to the outdoor patio, where a hammock was all too inviting and patio chairs and tables are scattered under a covered clear roof top. The weather was nearly perfect for staying the rest of the afternoon right there. On the side of the wall there is some wing art from Colette Miller's Global Wing Project. Be sure to pose in front of these beautiful wings! All around we enjoyed the staff, our meal, the entertainment, the patio, the wing art and the dog Murphy we met on the patio who was the most lovable creature ever! Great music and great beer, though I wish they would get a better menu. This place is worth the drive from DC. Close to Dolly Sods, Canaan Valley and White Grass, its a great location. If they want to see how you should treat customers they might try going to any of the other places in Thomas and Davis to get an idea. This attitude seems to be encouraged by the owner. I really don't know what this is all about. There is one bright spot in all this... They have good music and Tony. Tony is pretty cool, he is the handy man and sometimes mans the grill out on the patio. For some reason they weren't grilling out back when I visited recently... don't know why, it was good food... (the buffalo smoked sausage and mutton burgers that is, not that vegan gluten free stuff inside!). read more

The pros about this place are that it's the only place around that has a uniquely granola-hippie atmosphere that really mixes with the natural environment and hills that surround it. The music has always been fantastic and diverse and considering the area that's a challenge. The food is and has improved since it's opened. The decorations and stuff on the walls is enchanting to look at and it creates a likeable personality to the entire restaurant. The cons are that the waitstaff is friendly but depending on the time of day they can be totally pretentious and anti social. The seating is god-awful considering the amount of people that come in on any given night. Usually there are lines out the door and people waiting to be seated for hours if folks are getting in late for a show or someone of big reknown is playing - it's almost impossible to get a seat. You think if your establishment was getting that much traffic you would install better seating to compensate for the crowds and people. Ordering your food is a pain, be ready to wait upwards of forty minutes for your order to come out. The selection and variety of beers is nice, desserts are ok if they haven't had them sitting out for days. read more

Are you in the middle of West Virginia...looking for an eclectic group of hippies and some genuine mountain music? Then you are in the right place at the Purple Fiddle. This spot is a genuine experience in the midst of some of the most beautiful country you'll see on the East Coast. They have a small-ish food menu that is ok. I had the falafel when I was there which I liked enough but which I didn't love. The special chicken stew wasn't great. But you don't really go there for the food, you go for the music, the atmosphere and a few drinks. We were lucky enough to be there during one of their weekend 1 PM shows (which, by the way, is genius, because sometimes I just don't want to get out late for a later show). It was a very eclectic crowd of folks there, locals and tourists. They have a nice drink selection including some local beers on tap. That being said, my last experience highlighted that they have a serious problem catering food to as large an audience as this place is likely to attract. It took an hour and forty five minutes to get our food. In addition, they ran out of multiple menu items and were not able to predict their supplies. Add that to the fact that the space is not utilized effectively and lacks sufficient seating, and you find yourself with a location that may be awesome or awful depending on the night. We were the only people in the entire establishment and it still took over 45 minutes to get our food. I'm positive it doesn't take this long to put soup in a bowl and some chips on a plate. The service was not friendly. I had to ask for my food and was politely informed that they totally forgot about us. Jess was a terrible server. Waaaaaaaay overpriced cover for this tiny, small-town venue. Yes, they get some quality musicians playing there but $20 at the door for EVERY one? I don't think so. The rude staff starts at the door and continues to the usually unmanned counter where you order. The food is ok, but I was too annoyed at the service and atmosphere for it to make it up to me.
