The studio is a bit difficult to find--go to the second floor, to the right, when you enter the small door on the corner of the 200 Central Park South apartment building. Attended a free introductory class. Recommend for all first timers! Our instructor, Alice, was very upbeat and friendly. Highly recommend her. She led the class with high spirits and encouragement. This studio is tiny but cozy. I enjoyed a class with six other women. Definitely having more bodies in that small space could make it claustrophobic. No showers, two changing rooms, one bathroom, and free code lockers for your belongings (no need to bring a lock). The bathroom provides useful feminine toiletries, that come in handy and are appreciated. The intro class provided a manageable level of intensity. As promised, my muscles were shacking afterwards! Taking one star off for the pushiness of the staff to get you to sign up for classes/membership deals right on the spot.

Some definition to my abs courtesy of Pure Barre Central Park South's Pure Empower and Pure Reform classes.

This Pure Barre location is actually at 200 Central Park South where it relocated at the end of August 2019. Initially I missed the old space at 60th & Columbus Circle, but I've come to really like the smaller studio for the Pure Empower and Pure Reform classes (I hardly break a sweat in the Classic class, so no longer attend those). A shout out to Collier (Pure Empower) and Sara (Pure Reform). I recently reached my 100th class with this studio, and highly recommend both Empower and Reform for the challenging workouts. The 2 pound weights on your wrists and then ankles really ramps up the effort in Empower; the only other workout where I sweat as much is on the Megaformer at SLT or at [solidcore]. The studio does not have showers, but there are lockers for your belongings, two changing rooms, and a single bathroom. A friendly and welcoming vibe overall. I found the barre classes at Exhale (just up the block) to feel a bit more like a cattle call with less individual attention, although I do go to Exhale to supplement my Pure Barre workouts depending on the class schedule. Physique 57 is also in the neighborhood; Signature II classes are a great, faster paced barre workout.

Amazing workout! Very professional and harder than it looks. Concentration is on core. I think most barre classes include too much leg. Try it on Classpass! Fabulous

Location was semi confusion to find. Very lovely staff but I didn't feel I was getting as much out of it compared to Pilates or Barry's

Magda is a fantastic pilates instructor who truly cares about ensuring that everyone in her classes get a great workout that is suitable for their level. I discovered this studio through her online platform when studios were closed in NYC due to the pandemic, and have been taking group classes, privates, & duet sessions ever since. I've tried many other Pilates studios in NYC, and can say without a doubt that Magda's classes are the best if you're looking to strengthen your core, mobility, and overall fitness. I highly recommend for everybody - I've brought my best friend, my fiancé who had never done pilates before, my sister-in-law.. and now they don't go anywhere else. Also - don't sleep on the online platform on their website - the workouts are extremely effective yet doable. You get live feedback from an instructor who corrects your form. If you prefer live workouts (who doesn't?), the studio has a great variety of Pilates apparatus (reformers, Cadillac, chair, ladder).

The new studio she designed is stocked with brand new top-of-the-line equipment; Sylvia spared no expense and you can tell. From sleek reformers that turn into fuller towers with the addition of a panel, her classes now have no limitations. She thrives on creative moves, mixing things up and continuous learning and training. The studio is bright and airy, with almost floor to ceiling windows and just some plants in the window sills with props for working out everywhere else- there is no clutter or mess and it is all about pilates. You enter into a perfectly angled sitting area with a shoe & coat rack, and two curtained changing areas behind. There are socks for sale if needed (a must have as per studio policy), and a water cooler if you bring a bottle. I have been a student of Sylvia's for over 4 years and she has become a friend. She is a generous instructor, giving her all to her clients and not letting them slack- you do not go to her class to 'take it easy.' You go to get your ass kicked, and EVERYONE in class knows and wants that- prior experience necessary! Through class, Sylvia always makes sure the room temperature is comfortable, which is very unusual I find, but much appreciated. Obviously as you work out it gets warmer- most instructors never take this into consideration, and I think it shows a lack of awareness about their clients experience. Additionally she is hyper aware of everyone's injuries & limitations, as most clients are regulars- but if there is someone new, it is definitely the first question she asks...well, maybe after "you have done Pilates before, right?" With a giggle...... This too I find is not as common as it should be in other Studios and demonstrates to me even more the care she has for her clients well-being safety and overall health. Today was my first class and it will not be my last, we did a serious ab section, tons of quad and glute work, as well as a lot of work on our lats and our triceps. The hour flew by as it always does with Sylvia, and I was sorry to leave. I'm scheduled to come back already this week so I'm looking forward to getting my butt kicked once again! Glad you are back!

I've also been wanting to try Solidcore back at home, so it worked out that I got to try Solidcore for my drop-in visit. I noticed that the studio was minimal. They didn't appear to sell any merch, water, or even grip socks (I forgot mine). That being said, i was informed that I could use the megareformer with barefeet. I was relieved that I wasn't going to be denied for class! I noticed that was actually a common practice, unlike my home studio that requires grip socks during class. The Solidcore space reminded me a lot like how Soul Cycle is. Dimly lit, music bumping, basically working out in a club. I'm here for it. I took Marcus' 11:15am full body class, and it was fantastic. He was such a great instructor and helped to encourage deeper or more challenging movements by adjusting my form. I also appreciated him spending the time to go over how their megareformers worked. Only major difference I saw was the location of the springs on the machine, but I also thought it was cool how the resistance of the springs were recommended based on how far along you are in your Solidcore practice.

Never have I come across a fitness center that charges you to put your membership on pause or charges you for another month of membership even if you can't attend the classes because they want at least 30 days notice prior to cancellation. They also charge you for individual class cancellations if they were made 10-12 hours before the start of class as well as no shows... in any case, they should be grateful if that happened because it makes room for another to sign up. It's really off-putting and it shows that they are money-hungry without any consideration for their members. Things could come up in the last minute and not everyone is in the city full time. So the wellness aspect of this fitness center is pretty much lacking... I initially wanted to pause my membership for a few months and they said there's a fee to pause membership which was a surprise and it made absolutely no sense to me. So I changed my mind and decided opt for cancellation. Then they came up with all sorts of excuses, from saying that I had signed a contract which I never did... to asking me to email them a copy of a doctor's note which I don't have because it's not medical related... I just want my membership cancelled because I found the fees to be unethical. I just don't like unethical and controlling practices and I tend to avoid them... end of story. And yes they ended up charging me for another month knowing that I wouldn't be attending and said that I can give it to my friends or family which was so wrong... I ended up calling the credit card company to reverse it.

It doesn't have a particularly catchy color scheme, the most outstanding thing about it would probably be the exposed brick wall. The studio has super calm vibe, no music which sometimes combined with the super chill vibe made me very sleepy during class. The studio is not a trendy one at all, its clientele consists of a lot of older people who go there for private sessions and people who live around the neighborhood. But realistically speaking, if you are going to get an amazing workout who cares if celebrities and beautiful people are taking class with you. You do see the occasional Lululemonite but that also has to do with the fact that the studio is in the heart of Chelsea. The staff is super knowledgeable and most of them have been teaching Pilates for over a decade. My favorite instructor is Benjamin Oyzon who is a former dancer/burner who now teaches pilates while simultaneously sharing Burning Man and other festival stories. That might actually be the reason why I like taking his class so much. They only have 5 reformers so even if you take a group class it feels like a private because the instructor gives you a lot of personal attention. I only took reformer classes but they also offer Gyrotonic, Tower and Cadillac classes. In the studio they also have a lot of props (bumpy balls, blocks, rings, resistance bands, etc.) to help you position and align yourself for different movements. Overall I was very satisfied with my experience at Chelsea Movements. I took about 15 classes in the studio and definitely saw improvement in my body and posture. The no sweat factor was also a big motivator to take more class and I can confidently say that this is studio offers unpretentious Pilates, which in New York City is very rare. Most people at the studio are regulars which I think says a lot about the studio itself. I also learned that reformer is not just laying on a bed chilling and pulling a bunch of ropes, the class is HARD and the fact that you don't sweat doesn't mean you won't sweat your ass (or abs?) off.

There was one instructor that I had that I didn't feel paid enough attention to the movement of the class' bodies and that I noticed kept looking at the clock. This really bothered me because pilates is all about doing movements correctly, you can hurt yourself if you do things too incorrectly. Overall, I just had one bad class, which wasn't even that bad. I'm going to go back but stay with the instructors that I generally use.
