Sonic yoga is chefs kiss. I've practiced yoga at home for years (like since pre covid) but decided to start going to studios. Sonic is the first place I've tried and will by my go to going forward! It's clean, and the ambiance is very fitting for a yoga studio. The staff is extremely warm and welcoming and their instructors know WTF they're doing. I've learned things that I wasn't incorporating in my practice and each class I've developed the courage to try a new asana. The instructors are excellent with guided meditation. I really feel like mentally, I go somewhere else. Which is a big deal for me because unfortunately when I practice alone I cannot get there. I took a virtual Flow 3 zoom class booked via Mindbody. It was a fun 60-minute flow with a few challenge poses thrown in (bound revolved half moon, flying crow, Visvamitrasana, head behind leg lizard, eight angle pose). I think the teacher sequenced the flow well to prepare you for the more advanced poses. I ended up getting into a challenge pose I haven't been able to get into recently for the past couple of years. Also noticed the teacher was very thoughtful to include in the sequence parts that give students the "experience" of doing full poses, even if we didn't get to the full forms within the 60 minutes. Cues were also pretty good. Finally, (not sure if just this session or in general), I also felt like the class steered clear of poses where you can potentially hurt yourself without a teacher in the room with you (for example tricky back bends) so it might have been relatively suitable for a virtual class despite some challenging poses. Would recommend if you're looking for a fun class to mix things up. read more

I moved to a new place in midtown last year, and after a nearby meeting wrapped early I tried to drop by for a class. Unlike most of the other poor reviews below, I was 15 mins early. I was recently diagnosed with MS, and I have a service dog. The second I walked in (no "hi," no "welcome"), I immediately got snark from Mitch, the teacher, about whether "the animal" was okay with being in the lobby, which I said I was. I said it was my first time. The receptionist still tried to find my name; once it was clear I hadn't already reserved a spot, you'd think I'd committed the biggest social faux pas imaginable. Mitch very rudely snapped back that "EVERYONE in New York has to reserve a spot for yoga," and like, okay dude, I didn't in Williamsburg. But, to a guy like this, I'm sure that wouldn't count as NYC anyway. What a piece of work. To walk into a yoga space and be confronted with some of the most immediately negative energy I've felt walking into ANY space is the antithesis of what yoga is about. Staff was responsive to emails and the online class schedule was accurate. Checkin was easy and the directions to the studio accurate. Technically the class was ok and Mitchell Polon is certainly very capable of doing advanced poses (which he delights in showing off). That said, Mitchell Polon was militaristic and just came across as a hard personality. I interpreted his monotone as condescending with zero humor. I felt treated as lesser than, not a visiting yogi. It was almost as if Mitchell Polon was on an ego trip and everyone there was his inferior. Message received. I came across Sonic Yoga on ClassPass. I have been working in the Hells Kitchen area since 2012, but somehow never noticed the sandwich board sign for this yoga studio. I took the Sonic Express class with Mitch Polon and I really enjoyed it. He was friendly and offered options for all different practice levels. His cues were great and I really enjoyed the fast pace of the class. The studio was warm, but not hot. I worked up a little sweat, but nothing significant. The class was about half full and I expect that it could get a bit steamy with a full house. The reception area is definitely tight and getting my shoes and jacket after class was over was a little tough. I have been practicing for many years at many different studios (mainly hot studios). I look forward to furthering my practice at Sonic! PS - This studio is above a bar/restaurant and next to McDonalds and I smelled french fries the entire class. This was my first ever yoga class and Arthur was the instructor. He was great! He has a very relaxing voice which definitely added to the ambiance. The studio is small but still fit a lot of people in. The lighting was nice and low. There were a few issues with the music which I wish had been a bit more consistent. I found Sonic on Class Pass, it was a donation based class and I happened to be in the area that morning so it worked out great! The reception area is a bit small, but everyone was super friendly and welcoming. I happened to go at 10am on a weekday and had only 3 other people in the class with me, which was quite relaxing. My instructor was Kavi, who is still in the beginning phases of her instructing and I had a great time in her class. She helped correct my form multiple times, and shared her own experiences that brought her to yoga. They also have mats available if you need one, though I'm not sure if there's a rental fee for that or not. read more

I was FOUR minutes late for a class and I wasn't let in. The reason I was given is that there's a live stream going on and that was why I couldn't enter the room four minutes late. However, I tuned into a live stream hosted by Sonic Yoga a few weeks ago where the sound NEVER turned on and we kept informing them of it and the issue was never addressed. So whatever standards for "preserving the practice" this place has are totally inconsistent, depending on the whim of whoever happens to be there at that time. I think it is unreasonable to not let someone in after FOUR minutes. I should've read the yelp reviews before going here because I see that a frw people had the same issue. I'd like to know how deep people are into their practice in four minutes that I would be interrupting them to such a devastating degree. Most studios will let people in up to five minutes after entering. I understand the onus is on me to arrive on time however real life happens sometimes. Especially in New York City with unreliable weekend public transportation and shockingly sometimes people end up being FOUR minutes late. I would not recommend this yoga studio if you think you will ever have a FOUR MINUTE delay in your entire life on your way to a class here. A star added because I went back to beg the woman at the front desk to put me in as having attended so I wouldn't have to pay 20 bucks to classpass as a no-show, which she did. The class itself works out to about $8 through classpass and i was not about to allow this experience to cost me $28. She also offered to put me in another class the same day but I had another obligation and wasn't able to. read more

I absolutely love this yoga studio. I have lived in NYC for 5 years now and I have tried many studios - Sonic Yoga is my favorite. The studio is located on the second floor of a walk-up (above Ivy Restaurant on 8th Avenue). There is not a lot of room in the reception area, so be mindful of what you bring. There are cubbies in the yoga studios that you can place your belongings, but no lockers. In the studios where classes are held there are also changing curtains - if you need to switch from your human clothes to yoga apparel. There are also two bathrooms and a water station available to refill your water bottle. The studio is very clean and organized. Mat cleaner is available at the front desk (you just need to ask). Classes are EXACTLY the level as they are listed online. If you walk into an advanced class, it will be advanced. Sonic has a wonderful teacher training program too for anyone interested in deepening their practice. This studio is incredibly friendly. If you are interested in trying before signing up for a membership I would recommend a community based class. Be careful though, you will never want to leave this studio :) read more

Beginner Flow with Taquice, Sunday afternoon -- I highly recommend for yoga newcomers. This was my first visit to Sonic Yoga and the class exceeded my expectations with Taquice's clear, easy to follow instructions with modifications and challenges. While not a hot yoga class, the room was heated to about 80 degrees. Sonic Yoga has two studios, a single restroom, a small lobby area for coats and shoes, and cubbies for your belongings (no lockers) in the actual studio space. I rented a yoga mat for $2 and when done, returned it to the bin of the "to be wiped down" mats. Very convenient if you don't want to carry your own yoga mat to and from class. Check in at the studio can be done with the receptionist or on the two iPads at the front desk (it appears to be the same check-in software as at Physique 57). read more

Okay, I'm giving Sonic 4 stars because it's a great studio, but I'm not going back. I've tried yoga before in the past, with various forms of vinyasa and bikram. Yoga just isn't for me. I signed up for the introductory 30 day class and it is an excellent way to get into it. the instructors are pretty good. I went EVERY SINGLE DAY for a few months to see if I would feel better. I gotta say I did become a little more flexy and limber, but that is some serious time commitment. I feel you have to go all in with it to get the most out of it. I've done yoga before in the past once or twice a week, and it's not enough because you get all stiff again when the next class rolls around. I couldn't keep going because the classes are way too long for my tastes. The weekday morning classes (flow 1-2) classes are the best compromise, but some of the instructors go over the 60 minute limit - good if you're looking for bang for your buck, but if you gotta get to work, it's hard to just leave before the class is over. I didn't enjoy all of the chanting and breathing exercises. Is there any way we can skip those and cut the class time down? Normal classes are 1 hr 15 min, so add the time it takes to prepare and walk there, that's like a 2 hr commitment out of your day. Longer classes are 1.5 hrs. Weekend morning classes and evening classes are crazy packed. You cant fully do some poses without touching people. I do like how I don't have to sign any long term contract and can cancel anytime (with 30 day notice). read more

YES! The first-to-reviewness is SO sweet!! God, it's been so long... I decided I needed to shake up my fitness routine for the summer (SO over the elliptical...) and at the coaxing of a yogi friendly friend, I decided to take up yoga. Now, I've tried it before, taking the classes at my gym, but when you're a beginner, big group classes tend to be a little too advanced. Basically I'd pretend to know what I was doing, get really sweaty, fall down a lot, and leave never wanting to do yoga again. But what I realized is that you just need a good studio and good teacher to get you started. I didn't want to shell out the dough for a studio considering how much a pay for a gym membership, but now I know it's really worth it. The studio is small, but sunny and friendly. And all the teachers I've tried who teach Vinyasa level 1 have been wonderful - though of course I'm partial to Erin who started it all. Now, I will not claim that I am at all good at Yoga, but I bought a 10-class pass, and hopefully by the end of it I'll be able to return to my gym classes with head held high, or upside down, as the case may be. Incredible. I signed up for the $99 for 2 months unlimited as a true gamble, and I will be coming back multiple times a week. Sign up for the YELP offer though if you're unsure you'll make it two months - it comes up when you check in for $30 and 30 days unlimited. Sonic is on the 3rd and 4th story of a walk up, so it's easy to miss. Just look to the right of Vynl and it's right there. I instantly felt comfortable walking in when the woman behind the desk walked me through the different options and actually figured out for me which package was right for me. I live around the corner, so the unlimited was perfect, but they have a lot of different choices for a newcomer. They have cubbies for your coats/shoes, but you take your valuables into the room for you. You can rent a mat for $2, but most people bring their own. You can buy a mat there for around $60. There's only one shower, and it's on the 4th floor level, and it seems pretty clean, but I would still just wait to shower at home (since they don't offer towels/toiletries to use). Signing up is easy - they have an online option, I think a mobile app, or you could just walk in and sign up. The classes don't seem to fill up that easily so you don't really have to sign up early. I tried the Fundamentals class, even though I hadn't done yoga for a good 4-5 years. It was completely do-able, honestly I would skip over the beginners classes and go straight to this. You learn the poses in an accelerated fashion, and you don't feel uncomfortable for a second. I took my class with Mariel who was the sweetest - she never made me feel insecure about my MANY mistakes, and was always there to help and compliment. You get a real workout out of it -or maybe that's just me - and there isn't a lot of rest time, just so you know what you're getting yourself into. The ambiance is super cozy and serene, and I really felt at home. It wasn't too crowded (I went on a weeknight) - there were about 12-15 people in my class, but I can see how these classes fill up. Overall, if you're willing to try out yoga, this is the place for you. I'm instantly obsessed and cannot wait to go back tomorrow. read more

There are a lot of great things about this studio. There are a lot of regulars and a feeling of community, and it feels like it has its own special character compared to many others in the city. It's true as some others have said, that everyone is generally pleasant and supportive of each other. I also like the look and feel of the class spaces, and the location is incredibly convenient for me. I'm having a hard time going back regularly though because of two reasons: 1) I can't stand the crazy reception area. It takes a lot to get me so bothered, but it is SO chaotic and cramped. It is truly impossible to enter and exit in a calm, de-stressed way. Everyone does try to be respectful and move around each other, but there is no place to move that you're not in the way. 2) The classes themselves are super cramped. Of course, this is NYC, so cramped classes at 6:30 pm are to be expected BUT I've been able to find plenty of other full classes elsewhere where I am not 4 inches away from someone (if that?). Most classes I haven't been able to do the full expression of an asana or do the asana at all because of people around me. Finally (and I realize this is more subjective): I haven't really enjoyed any of the instructors except April. I wouldn't even mention this except that I do yoga 5x a week and hardly ever find an instructor that I don't like in *some* way. I've found that a lot of the other instructors here seem like they might be novices? I'm sure I'm too ignorant to be judging such a thing, but that's my two cents based on the many instructors I've had in the city. read more

Not a huge yoga person, but I decided to go cause they had a great intro special and I was feeling like an old rusty chair for way too long. I encountered an amazing community with excellent instructors who not only changed my super stiff disgruntled form into a mildly stiff and less disgruntled person, but also quickly inspired me to continue practicing as a part of my daily routine. I also found myself doing things I never thought in a million years I thought I could do in a very short amount of time. The classes are challenging but understanding, I think it's great that there's room for growth for people of all levels/ experience, almost down to the individual. I'm new to the city and decided to try Sonic Yoga based on the awesome reviews here on Yelp. I wasn't disappointed. It's a great, non-pretentious place to practice yoga in the city. Despite the location, I found the studio to be quiet and serene. I tried the two months unlimited special and highly recommend it to new students. They have a good range of classes available for yogis at all levels. Teachers are great and each with their own unique style. Two cons: First, the reception area is way too cramped. I felt that I always have to tiptoe and bump into others before and after class. Second, compared to the studio I used to go to in my previous city, I felt that Sonic did not "teach" poses or focus on making sure yogis continuously learn. It's more like "If [advanced pose] is in your practice, you may do that now" instead of "Ok now let's do [advanced pose], for those who haven't done that before, here's how you do it..." Maybe that's a conscious decision by the studio but something to keep in mind as you try out Sonic Yoga. read more

I'm on week three of a four-week Groupon and I only have one complaint: MAT CLEANER. They don't keep any in the practice rooms, so you have to ask for it at the front desk, and then hope no one is in the bathroom, so you can grab a paper towel. Every other yoga studio I've practiced at has provided mat cleaner, even the YMCA! Please please keep a bottle and towels in the practice rooms! Otherwise... It's a great studio. There are two spacious room, with plenty of blocks, straps and blankets. I really work up a sweat in these classes too. I'm out of practice, so I've been sticking to the beginners for the past couple weeks, but I'll be bumping up in a couple days... PS - you can get 2 months for $108 right now. read more

I love the studio and the instructor here (especially the instructor, i had April once she is awesome). But! There is always a but right? Whoever runs this studio did a terrible job in arranging classes. Especially the studio trying to fit more people into the class, WAYYYYY more than the studio can accommodate. There is literally NO space between you can your neighbors thus making doing some yoga poses extremely hard. And because there are too many people in the room, it heated up the room very fast and since breathing is a crucial thing in yoga, u cant breathe AT ALL in the studio. Besides, the coat hanging area and where people can put their shoes and bags are way too crowded since they admit more students than the room can accommodate. I would not return to nor recommend this place if its still this crowded. read more

I arrived a couple minutes late for class with girlfriend. The class had not started yet. The receptionist and manager said the class only had room for one of us. We asked if we could simply reschedule for a different day. The front desk woman and apparent manager, male were extremely rude and not flexible. They charged both of us for the full class and wouldn't allow either of us to reschedule for another class in the future. They spoke to us like children and kept repeating the policy, referencing a stupid 5 minutes before policy. Even though they were initially willing to let one of us join initially. Here's my policy, you just lost a potential lifetime customer over 1 class and your poor customer service / policy. The place was also dirty and smelled like sweat and stale bologna. Good luck to your business and with future endeavors, maybe you'll be nicer to the next new customer. read more

Got the two month trial membership. The few classes I've attend are nice. Great to have a smaller yoga studio close to where I live. However, just tried going to a class I had already signed up for and when I got there they told me the class was full. Not sure why it said it was open online, since they have obvious control over how many people attend. Additionally, it seems like a double standard if you are going to charge us for skipping classes we've signed up for, but also have the ability to not let us into class. I've already locked in for a membership so won't make a difference to them if I come or not. Anyway, overall the studio is fine if you live close, but won't be keeping my membership, since it's not worth the trouble. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! I reserved a spot through ClassPass, and was 5 minutes late they said I can no longer attend the class. Fine, I get it I was late, but when I tried to ask if I could get a pass for another class they were beyond rude and started repeating their "policy" and treating me like I am robot. I'm writing to update my review prior to bump it up a couple of stars because, while the change/waiting/reception area is still tiny, and the facilities aren't the spa-like ones I'm used to... it doesn't matter so much anymore when you realize that you've signed up for a community of genuine people who are there to support and nurture your growing practice. Yes, the space is cramped and the floorboards are creaky in certain spots, but this is the only yoga studio I've been to where there is no judgement and no feeling of competition because everybody is truly there to learn and to improve, and the teachers are there for you every step of the way, whether it be your first warrior I in Flow Fundamentals or if you're in Flow 1 and trying to bruise your arms in crow pose. For the beginners, I do think that even the Fundamentals class could potentially be hard to keep up with because depending on the teacher, they're not going to walk you through getting into a pose, BUT like I said, NOBODY will judge, and EVERYBODY is there to help. read more

When Mitch showed me around the place, I knew from the energy alone that I would fall in love and I did. Eudora lead the 9am 1-2 flow practice and it was amazing! After being cooped up in a plane, I needed to flow and she brought a fun and challenging flow that my body needed. She even got me up to my pincha mayurasana which is rare when taking a class. My old job used to have free yoga class three times a week and they were run by Sonic Yoga teachers. I got to work with three Sonic Yoga teachers during that time and I really loved all of them and their energy. I especially enjoyed my class with Tacquice Campbell and Chris Temple. They got me back on yoga while I was working at my old job. It was one of the best part of my job. After I left the company, I practiced on my own for a bit and finally got a chance to visit Tacquice and Chris's home ground, Sonic Yoga. All the yoga teachers at Sonic Yoga have good knowledge of yoga and I like that you can get different experience depending on the teacher. Additionally, people in the class are very friendly and have a warm vibe. People will easily start conversation. Other thing I notice about this studio is that there are good balance of gender, age and race. I enjoy the diverse people with different experience and community they create. There are good option of yoga classes and they also offer interesting workshop. I would recommend this place for anyone who is starting yoga for the first time or someone who wants to really deepen their yoga practice. read more

This was my second time at Sonic yoga. I enjoyed it very much the first time, but had an incredible experience the last time I went. I went for a community yoga class which is taught by newly graduated instructors. My instructor was Jess. It just so happened that I was the only one in the class, which sometimes makes me a little nervous, but after meeting Jess I felt very comfortable. Nice yoga studio with day round classes. I've done yoga at many gyms before, this was my first time at a yoga specific studio. I wanted to continue but decided to find another spot - the classes are WAYY too crowded. I took about 5 classes in 2 weeks, 1230 once and evening rest... All of them were so packed the mats had barely an inch between them, people would bump into each other during asanas - If you're getting in last or so, even if you're registered and checked in, finding a place for the mat is v tough. This is why I opted out of Equinox a while back, it should not be so stressful to get into a class when registered and not this crowded - my main issue with the instructors was, they assume there are lot of regulars showing up, so none of them ask if anyone has any injuries, nor show any variations for pigoen pose etc, which I've learned, thankfully, in other studios. The instructors are just walking around dictating poses. They don't correct poses. Granted, a lot of regulars are advanced but in any class, variations and alternatives for injuries is a must - the community/ staff is friendly - the reception area is small, with 2 rest rooms for changing. In a pinch, one will have to wait a bit to change clothes, so one must come at least 15 mins before to get into the class without feeling stressed about not finding a space for your mat A lot of folks in classes are advanced, it's inspiring to see so many folks take yoga so sincerely! read more

I'm typing this in the prone position, face down on the ground because I am unable to lift my arms. I accidentally took a Flow 1-2 class after not having done any regular yoga (as opposed to Bikram yoga) in about 6 months. I forgot how arm intensive this stuff is. About 140 pushups and downward dogs later, I find myself waking up to the sound of chimes, lying in a puddle of my own sweat. Did I really just fall asleep during savasana? I'm not going to say it was the best yoga class I have ever taken. I found the room to be too humid which made it feel like I was practicing on a slip 'n slide rather than a yoga mat. I also found the layout of the room to be a little frustrating. From the back of the room, I couldn't see her demonstrate the postures at the front of the room or on the left side of the room. As a first-time student, I thought the teacher went a little too fast and played the music a little too loud especially since I couldn't see what she was doing. On the plus side, the class was challenging and made me sweat like crazy (which is generally the point of exercise). The studio and equipment all clean and the staff was fast and efficient. I practice and teach hot yoga and bikram daily but I found my body craving some non heated yoga. I was in NYC with some free time on my hands and went to Sonic Yoga for my first class there with Sarah Ireland...and I am so glad I did. It's been a full day since the class and I am still buzzing from it. Even though the studio is located right on busy 8th avenue by Central Park, it is absolutely peaceful, calming, and a true sanctuary in NYC. Sarah is absolutely everything you would want in a yoga instructor. She has a wonderful energy, takes the time to get around the everyone in the room, and also carries a laid-back, personal approach to her teaching. Her class was so refreshing and energizing, but also offered some challenging variations. Do yourself a favor and check out Sonic Yoga. I will definitely be back! This is the epitome of feel good yoga. The studio is nice but not over the top. The flow is so scrumptious that I want to savor every second of it. I found myself glancing at the clock and wishing there was more time left in class. It is challenging enough for the established yogi - the teachers give options to bind and arm balance all the time - without being too intimidating for the novice.
