I found UpDog Studios about a year ago and love it!! Owners Nicole and Jordan have created an incredibly warm, safe, supportive, welcoming and fun, yet challenging yoga and mat pilates studio (and barre and probably other things by the time you're reading this review because they are always innovating and adding things to make the studio even better!). Classes are excellent - they are open to all levels, but lots of options are provided and they are always challenging if you're there for that. I get a great workout and stretch whenever I go. I tried a few studios last year trying to find one to help with my back issues (spoiler - it's working!), and this was by far the best one I found on UWS. Thank you, UpDog! read more

It's small but very intimate. I feel like they're definitely trying. The instructors I've seen were very good. I used to go to Yoga For the People and that place was usually more crowded but here I've had fears I'd be the only person in the class. I'm not sure if this is pandemic related or not; I've not been since the mask requirements were imposed but I was happy to find this place in the neighborhood and would like to go back again sometime. They also will let you book and pay for classes online, which is a plus. read more

A friend had recommended yoga to me to help my mobility and core strength which is something I've struggled with as I get older. As someone who is new to yoga and has been more familiar with lifting, I was EXTREMELY intimidated because I had no clue what was about to transpire. As soon as I walked into the space, the first thing I noticed was the light. I'm a big fan of natural light and this place really takes advantage. Immediately I was welcomed by Nicole who was teaching a beginning class. She had a bright smile and asked if I had ever taken a class before and my response was 100% no. She laughed and immediately made me familiar with the mats and blocks to help me with some of the positions and poses. The class was difficult (probably because the lack of experience) but not so much that I couldn't do it and Nicole made sure to kindly correct anything I was doing wrong. Took a class with Kelley today. It was amazing! The atmosphere is bright and inviting, some ayurvedic scents going on as well. The classroom is long and narrow and Kelley did a great job walking around so she could be heard across the room. Her playlist consisted mostly of chillwave alternative beats but honestly, I was so into the flow that I only remember the music in the beginning and end of class. She finished off a shavasana with a more classic meditation song. A great, simple, and classic flow. There was a mix of challenging poses that you could modify, along with basic poses. Definitely coming back- it's so close and such a bang for your buck. I almost didn't want to review so that this place doesn't get overcrowded and too popular, but hey- they deserve it! read more

It's a lovely bright and large space full of plant as soon as you enter you already feel serene. Nicole's class are Wonderfull she's is generous and really cares for her student. This was my second time coming to Brahman Yoga; the first time I went, it was kind of chilly, they didn't have space heaters, so it was frustrating to be doing any sort of physical activity in a room that fosters muscle cramping. I like how cheap the drop-in classes are and that they let you rent out mats, but the mats don't have that much grip so it's kind of easy to slide. I went to another class a few days ago and it was much better with heaters, and I really enjoyed Irena's flow and style of teaching. I would definitely go back, but I wish the teachers would talk more about modifying poses, especially for those who have injuries. read more

Came to the city for a trip with the GF and she does these kinds of classes all the time however I do not but I agreed to try it with her (happy wife happy life right). The studio was great, cleanly and everyone was super understanding that she was experienced and I was not. Nicole made us both feel challenged for each of our experience levels which I was worried about before the class but more importantly instead of just helping me, she actually took the time to show my GF how she could support me in those moments. I am so happy to have discovered this yoga gem in Hamilton Heights! I work in the hospital up in Washington Heights so it's very convenient for me to go a few times a week. Their one giant studio is spotlessly clean and so inviting with good vibes all around! You can bring your own mat or rent one for $2. The various teachers are all great, Luis being the most hilarious one, kept us giggling during one afternoon class. The only thing to keep in mind is that while these classes are mostly open-level, beginners might have a hard time catching up as the vinyasa flow sometimes can be very fast, depending on the teacher, however they do offer beginners courses on the weekends. I've never been a huge yogi, a few classes here and there over the years especially in times of emotional distress (lol) but the three classes I took at Brahman transformed that for me. Props to Andrea, Juan, and Kelly--very different flows but that brought me clarity and peace. I would recommend taking a beginner class and orienting yourself in the middle of the room if you haven't done much yoga so you can learn by watching and listening carefully. Have noticed some reviews complaining that they move too fast, but I didn't find that to be true. When I wasn't sure what to do all the instructors demonstrating without me asking. Love it here and can't believe it took me so long to find it. $8 a class and two donations classes a day is pretty incredible. read more
