I do not post Yelp reviews often, but this pilates studio truly is a hidden gem and deserves 5 stars. Magda is a fantastic pilates instructor who truly cares about ensuring that everyone in her classes get a great workout that is suitable for their level. I discovered this studio through her online platform when studios were closed in NYC due to the pandemic, and have been taking group classes, privates, & duet sessions ever since. I've tried many other Pilates studios in NYC, and can say without a doubt that Magda's classes are the best if you're looking to strengthen your core, mobility, and overall fitness. I highly recommend for everybody - I've brought my best friend, my fiancé who had never done pilates before, my sister-in-law.. and now they don't go anywhere else. Also - don't sleep on the online platform on their website - the workouts are extremely effective yet doable. You get live feedback from an instructor who corrects your form. If you prefer live workouts (who doesn't?), the studio has a great variety of Pilates apparatus (reformers, Cadillac, chair, ladder). read more

Well she is back folks and better than ever! Comfortable in her own space, dressed sleekly in black and confidently moving around, there is an overall bright, light friendly vibe as is evident and maybe due to her general nature and newly found freedom. The new studio she designed is stocked with brand new top-of-the-line equipment; Sylvia spared no expense and you can tell. From sleek reformers that turn into fuller towers with the addition of a panel, her classes now have no limitations. She thrives on creative moves, mixing things up and continuous learning and training. The studio is bright and airy, with almost floor to ceiling windows and just some plants in the window sills with props for working out everywhere else- there is no clutter or mess and it is all about pilates. You enter into a perfectly angled sitting area with a shoe & coat rack, and two curtained changing areas behind. There are socks for sale if needed (a must have as per studio policy), and a water cooler if you bring a bottle. I have been a student of Sylvia's for over 4 years and she has become a friend. She is a generous instructor, giving her all to her clients and not letting them slack- you do not go to her class to 'take it easy.' You go to get your ass kicked, and EVERYONE in class knows and wants that- prior experience necessary! Through class, Sylvia always makes sure the room temperature is comfortable, which is very unusual I find, but much appreciated. Obviously as you work out it gets warmer- most instructors never take this into consideration, and I think it shows a lack of awareness about their clients experience. Additionally she is hyper aware of everyone's injuries & limitations, as most clients are regulars- but if there is someone new, it is definitely the first question she asks...well, maybe after "you have done Pilates before, right?" With a giggle...... This too I find is not as common as it should be in other Studios and demonstrates to me even more the care she has for her clients well-being safety and overall health. Today was my first class and it will not be my last, we did a serious ab section, tons of quad and glute work, as well as a lot of work on our lats and our triceps. The hour flew by as it always does with Sylvia, and I was sorry to leave. I'm scheduled to come back already this week so I'm looking forward to getting my butt kicked once again! I purchased the Bryant Park Grand Opening 10-pack. I've done about 10 of the beginner classes now and really enjoy Pilates by Sylvia. In the past, I've taken a few pilates classes around the city and never felt the urge to continue. Some pilates classes are SO hard (even if they're noted as beginner) that I wasn't motivated to go back. Since I've been taking class at Pilates by Sylvia, I'm trying to work pilates into my schedule 1-2x per week. The instructors are fantastic (all of them who teach beginner) and the studio is shiny and new. Most importantly, the classes are excellent. I felt that the beginner level was appropriate for someone new to reformer in order to learn the machine and the cues. Still challenging, but a slower pace than the intermediate classes seem. After a long research of pilates studios in New York City and New Jersey I wanted to give a shot to Pilates by Sylvia. Now it's been 8 months and I want to go to pilates every single day! Pilates By Sylvia is THE Pilates studio to go to when you want results. There truly is no better workout in Manhattan than with Sylvia teaching. You leave knowing that you're leaner, strong, and tighter than when you arrived. The studio space itself is smaller (1 room, 6 machines), but so cozy and perfectly sized. It's kept clean at all times (machines are wiped down after each class). The small group classes are quite intimate and you still get plenty of personalized attention. One of the surprising factors about Sylvia's studio is the affordability. Sylvia's regular small class sessions start at $35/class, and the per class pricing decreases as you buy the larger packages. For those who don't do math well, they give you an easy breakdown right on their website. Their intro class packages are UH-MAY-ZING (1 for $15/3 for $45). If you want to try it out and don't know which intro package to buy, buy the 3-class package anyway. You'll thank me later. Fun Fact: I pay a monthly membership to NYSC because my workplace has a relationship with them. They charge me an additional $45 PER SESSION (on top of the monthly membership) if I wanted to reserve one of their Pilates classes. That's $10 more per class than Sylvia's studio, and she doesn't charge a monthly membership. While I'm on fun facts, here's another one - the trainers do not go easy on you. These sessions are not meant for those who want to simply pass an hour and say they got a workout in. You will get your a$$ whooped in a way you didn't know it could be whooped, you will enjoy it, and then you will happily come back for more. I did the three class intro package and happened to take one class with each instructor Kate is amazing... She is so sweet but still pretty challenging, I love her voice (in a non creepy way) Sylvia is a lot of fun too but she doesn't know how to count HAHA LOL.... I feel like she must do it on purpose!!!!!!! Why I knocked one start off -- Rachel isn't very nice... I am a beginner and she kept saying things like "guys this isnt that hard" etc. I'm really glad I took her class last because otherwise I may have never came back. My friend Michelle brought me here April 2019 for my very first Pilates class and I just fell in love. Amazing studio, tons of natural light, plants and really great ambiance. The reformer classes and the instructors are great too, I can definitely and always feel the pain in my body after every class especially classes with Sylvia. The class is limited to a certain number of people so the instructors pay a lot of close attention to every student and take into account consideration if you have any injuries/requests. I personally hate going out of my way for workout classes but I have been and will always travel out of my way for classes at Pilates by Sylvia - just cannot find another studio with such good combination of all factors - ambiance, workout itself and the instructors. The BEST pilates studio, EVER, period! I have tried so many and was never 100% satisfied or impressed. I am referred to as a pilates snob and will not go to just any studio. I'm new to this place, so not giving it five stars just yet but I'm definitely a fan. It's a really lovely studio, one room and just a few reformer machines as other reviews have mentioned. The studio is exceptionally well equipped, very clean, etc. I've tried out 2/3 of the instructors here and I'm really pleased with both. The work is HARD, but that's what you want right?! I leave here feeling like I've done something good for myself and enjoying having rather tired, somewhat sore muscles. The small class size means a whole lot of personalized attention which is great for anyone, but especially for people with various 'special' body matters, such as myself. Pilates by Sylvia is NY best kept pilates secret. Lots of classes for all levels, sleep studio with big windows and lots of light and top notch equipment. I've taken the intro classes by Rachel who is a great teacher for pilates beginners. She will push you to your best and really take the time to correct your movement and encourage you. I also love that the studio only has 6 machines to guarantee intimate classes with individual attention. Best of all, every time I went it was either me and another student or I was even by myself #privateclasswin ! The studio has two small changing rooms, bathrooms and sinks are shared in the floor with the other tenants of the office building. No shower either. Very happy to have found PbS. I've been going to Sylvia's Pilates classes for several years and am so glad that she opened her own studio, Pilates by Sylvia. She has a steady stream of regulars who, like me, have followed her, which is a testament to how great her classes are. No two classes are ever the same. She mixes up her routines and delivers a solid full-body workout that is sure to leave you sore (but hurts so good!). The classes go beyond well classical Pilates and can include varied techniques jumping, work with TRX-like straps, planks and tower work. I took my first pilates class with Corrina V. She was very patient and encouraging with my lack of ability. I have herniated disks, disk degeneration, and arthritis in my back and she was very careful with those areas, but at the same time giving me an amazing hard workout to help build up strength in the back. Her attention to form I believe was critical to having a smooth and intense workout. Who knew such graceful movements (other peoples more than mine) would be such a killer! I have never taken a class with Sylvia but am always so impressed that she remembers my name, my class level and personal details when she has clients all over the city. While I am consistently attending Melissa's classes, Rachel and Yunny are fabulous as well. Every class with Melissa feels fresh and challenging and she has such a warm personality. If you are into intense and challenging workout class that delivers outstanding result, Pilates by Sylvia is THE place for you. You will leave the studio feeling much stronger, leaner, and healthier. I was first introduced to Syliva's studio by my husband (then fiancé), because I wanted to get in better shape for our upcoming wedding. When my husband mentioned pilates- not boot camps, my initial thought was, "how challenging can it get?" OH BOY WAS I WRONG. The classes at Pilates by Sylvia completely redefined the term "Pilates", at least for me. All the teachers are extremely knowledgeable and encouraging, and make sure your entire body is engaged to do hard work. Their classes are fun and creative, and they use the reformer, tower, box, ankle weights, band, and other props to make sure all parts of your body get the workout. I was lucky enough to train with all teachers at the studio; Sylvia, Sarah, Katherine, Corinna, and Rachel. I must say, what an excellent group of passionate and motivating pilates teachers! They understand your body and are fully committed to bring the best result out of you. Ever since I've started, I've been going 3-5 times a week, and seeing my body transforming is just amazing! I must say, I was a competitive swimmer for 10 years and hold black belt in Kendo, but never felt better with my body- I feel so much more effectively and efficiently toned by going to the classes at Pilates by Sylvia. Once I got hooked on pilates, I gave a few other pilates studios a try, but never bothered going back. My husband and I live in downtown and it's 15-25 minutes uber drive to Sylvia's studio in midtown, but really we haven't found a better place to do pilates. I attend class here at least twice a week with Sylvia and I have to say, it really lights up my day. Classes always start and end on time, are challenging and energizing, and no two workouts are ever the same (No boredom here!) My brother who has studied sports, was national coach and champion, always tells me that places like this should be shout down with parties that have no qualifications, wrong advice, and make statements that are danger to the individual. I had attended a beginners class, but as I have hearing problems, looked up to see what other are doing could not hear well. The coach never came to quickly advice or show what to do, as I attend a lot classes at other locations, and do a lot of sports. A quick hint would be miracles. The supposed called instructor was at back, I could not hear and barely came for advice. Then when I came for intermediate only when I showed up the supposed trainer told me as was not qualified for intermediate, and had no right to attend in bad, negative and harsh tone. More so owner called afterwards to say that she was watched video' I was in danger". But by attending more and 10 beginners I could "get strong and fit quickly".. Any qualified trainer and owner could I have seen from video that the week before I ran half a marathon during the weekend, do weight lifting 3 times a week. This is a scam. Place let that have no etiquette, no qualified licenses, are mody, rude and by that put innocent non experience sports people at risk. Unaceptable read more

I've been going to Pilates by Sylvia for about a year and a half now and it is by far the best studio I've been to in the city. When I first moved to Manhattan I scoured Yelp and tried a handful of studios and Pilates by Sylvia immediately stood out -- Allegro reformers, challenging advanced classes, and knowledgeable teachers in small enough classes that you get plenty of attention (no bigger than 6-8/class). Sylvia keeps you guessing with unique classes every time, and you definitely get your moneys worth in terms of a great workout. Even since I've moved to Brooklyn, I'm happy to commute 40-50 minutes for Sylvia's classes. They're worth it. read more

I have been doing Pilates with Sarah for a while now and have gained so much strength and flexibility, as well as a more sculpted core. She customizes her workouts to her clients needs and injuries (I have a shoulder problem). The studio is really lovely and clean, and class is both serious and fun! Sylvia is a butt kicking instructor. I've been doing pilates for 4 years and still have not met anyone like her. Pilates is part of who she is. This is not a part time thing she is doing on the side. No one can get your body into shape as quickly as Sylvia can. She's amazing. I've been to plenty of pilates studios and Sylvia is, by far, the best. My body has changed so much in the few months I've been going to her. I actually cancelled my ClassPass membership so that I could devote all of my mornings to Sylvia's pilates classes. It's intense, it's not just stretching around on the reformer. She also changes the work outs every time and will use the tower, reformer, box, or barrel to make sure all parts of your body are engaged. Classes are smaller which is good because she pays really close attention to every client's form and breathing. Sylvia is great at motivating you to work out and will always push you to challenge yourself more. Her studio is always immaculate and sunny. Kate is another instructor at the studio who is one of my favorites. Rachel T is one of the best Pilates instructors I've come across, and in NYC there's a dime a dozen! She's intense and kicks your ass, in the best way possible! She's also one of the funniest people I've ever met, so while she's whipping your butt into shape, she's also distracting you with funny anecdotes and her vivacious and charismatic personality. She holds you accountable and doesn't let you "hide", which is what you want out of a workout class. I highly recommend taking her class- you'll be hooked.. And sore! read more

To begin, Sylvia is an amazing instructor. Many of her students - myself included - have followed her to her new studio, specifically because of her style of workout. Sylvia lives by the motto that there is no point of working out if you aren't sore - and I can attest that after years of Pilates, I am still always sore after her classes. She pushes you to exercises and intensities that you would not initially think you could achieve. In exchange for a hard workout - she makes it fun. Exercises are varied, fast paced and effective. I have since also taken classes with Rachel, who shares the same style of intensity and mixture of classical and modern Pilates. In addition to great instructors the studio space is insane - every apparatus one could want, clean modern machines, and a nice spot to wait to store bags. Pricing is very competitive (and given what you are getting in terms of space and instructors a steal) and the location is great. read more

5 stars for Rachel C! Thank goodness I met her during my first class. She is encouraging, challenging, positive, and fun. And she can count on beat, which is a huge plus! -1 for Sarah (honestly this would be a two star review if this was the first class I went to). I was pumped after going to Rachel's class but then I went to Sarah's Open level class. At first I thought she just gave out tough love and that was pretty cool..I like someone that really pushes you and can tease you a bit about it too. After awhile, she really bordered on being rude. When someone asked about the springs..she answered the question but muttered under her breath "I already told you guys that". Then as we were doing some exercises on our backs, she was scrolling on her phone (did this multiple times). At one point, she was clearly trying to take a picture of her drink to post on social media. Are you kidding me?! why is that necessary when people are paying so much for your class?? She then realized a bunch of us were looking at her after the set was up, she looked up from her phone and said "oh, I'm just obsessed with this drink right now so I had to post it on my insta stories" again, WHAT?! This girl was not my style at all, her attitude and overall persona was unwelcoming, stuck up, and she clearly didn't want to be there. I can't say it was ALL bad..there were moments of time where it was just a normal, challenging, pilates class, but that stuff was clearly overshadowed for me by her unprofessional nature. I actually have more examples that I witnessed but maybe Sarah was having a bad friday. 5 stars for everything else: studio is clean and welcoming, owner is sweet over the phone, and the location is convenient. read more

This is by far the best Pilates class I've taken in NYC. The classes are super challenging without being the kind of crazy hard where I'd dread going to class. You know what I mean?
