Do not rent from Purcell properties. I rented from them for 11 years. They constantly break the law and violate your tenant rights. They will illegally enter your apartment. The Secretary will harass you. There is a late fee on everything. There was a restaurant across from my building and there was always people parking in my assigned parking. There is a small laundry room and I have had tenants take my cloths out of a washer and a dryer in the middle of the cycle to start their own laundry. In the winter they have several buildings and one plow truck for snow removal. So there is a good chance you will be stuck until mid afternoon before they plow. Renting here was a nightmare. The landlords have absolutely no compassion or empathy for people. It's all about money with them. I had a neighbor who was really noisy. I called the police on him 8 times. My landlord called the police on his m 2 times and I called my landlord about him over 45 times within 1 years. The landlord did nothing about it . read more

Lived on 36 W Wheelock St. for a year. The rental space was generous, with 2 walk-in closets, separate kitchen and a good-sized living room. The place was also comfortably peaceful, being at the bottom of the hill away from the main Dartmouth campus while still very easily walk-able. Purcell staff were friendly and helpful when it came to maintenance requests and move-in/move-out transitions. Good experience overall. read more

To follow up my previous review, I have to say to Purcell that I am not going to delete my review no matter how many times you email me but I can definitely provide more details to clarify. If you think any part of the reviews is not fact and you can prove it here, I can make an update. Sublet: This is another tricky part of the contract. I signed up the contractor together with another person and clearly stated that we will rent it together and live in that apartment together. However, I did sign the contract with my own name while the another person was with me in front of you. No comment was made at that time. However, I received an email with a sublet contract later. I was asked to sign the sublet contract disregard of the facts I have disclosed to you. I was not familiar with the process so after clarifying the fact with you through email, I still agreed. Luckily, I still kept all the emails but no sure I want to experience it again. Maybe you could explain why you did that. Heating: I agree that the heating was fixed after three days in the cold winter in New Hampshire. The reason you told us was that one of the switch broke or was rotten. That's why the heated oil or gas cannot get into our apartment. Gas: The gas stove released a very strong gas smell. Yes, you could say it was not bad for health but most of the people believe gas leak should be dangerous. Some one came with an old gas stove and replaced the first one and then after a week, the second old gas stove was replaced with another old gas stove. I knew they were old because the oven of second gas stove didn't work and there were stains on them. Why don't you post the prove that you mentioned here ? I hope the prove is valid and can show the right time on it? Gas leak in the building: I agree that I do not have a report from 911 to say they came but I saw a firefighting truck out of the building and about three firemen came into the building to the basement to check. I am sure they have a report about that.I also asked them why there were there. They told me some one called the 911. Later, I met other students in the building and they told me it was gas leak in the building. The cleaning woman issue: I emailed you before and asked you whether she worked for you. The answer was yes. The cleaning woman also had the keys to all the apartments in the building and that's how she got into my apartment without my agreement. It was when I informed you that I was going to sue the cleaner and the company, you then claimed that it was just a contract between me and the cleaner. Well, I guess I didn't go to Dartmouth to get training in law, that's why I couldn't figure out all the detailed relationship between the cleaning woman and you. The cleaning woman JENN charged me almost 300 dollars for a one bedroom studio. She tried to ask for 500 dollars with no reasons, no agreement. Afterwards, I was still charged 75 dollars for carpet cleaning. Keys: I emailed Purcell before the deadline to inform you that I left the keys in my mailbox in the apartment building. I asked whether it was okay with you and there was no answer. Three days after the last day of lease, I was informed that I had to pay for the keys as they had to be returned to the office. At that time, I already left New Hampshire.I had to pay for the keys because I missed the deadline as you emailed me back after the deadline. The office is 15 to 20 minutes drive from the apartment. I have emailed you months before. In the email, it says this is not a proper behavior in the Dartmouth community. Search the keys words, you will find it. read more

I had a bad experience with Purcell Properties, in particular with the office manager Trista Kellman. On 4/12, I called about an apartment 30 minutes after it was posted (her words). I stated my interest and that I would be applying ASAP. I sent my application that night after I was finished with school (I am a graduate student). On 4/13 I received an e-mail saying the apartment was going to be given to a current tenant from another building that Purcell owns. On 4/22 Trista emailed me again to say the lease fell through with the current tenant and asked if I was still interested. I was, and sent several emails further stating my commitment to do whatever it takes to get the lease, including lengthening the lease term and paying several months rent in advance. On 4/25 Trista emailed me to say that the apartment was going to be given to someone else. I offered to pay 2 months rent in advance and sign a 2 year lease. No response. I called and talked to Trista, who told me that someone else had expressed interest first, and that this was the most fair policy. I asked to speak with the owner or someone higher up to make my case and present a better offer to someone who may be more inclined to care about the bottom line, and this request was ignored. If the fair policy is to offer the apartment to the first person, then wasn't it unfair to offer to a current tenant on 4/12 instead of myself who inquired 30 minutes after the posting? This seems inconsistent. Am I to be punished since I had to work that day and couldn't send in the application after I had already let them know it was coming? I was almost certainly the first person to inquire about this apartment, my superior offer wasn't even considered, a request to speak with a superior was ignored, and I didn't get the apartment. read more

I've rented from Purcell Properties since 2011and I couldn't be happier. The company is great to rent from and they care of their renters. My experience has been very positive. When I moved in they had completely replaced all the rugs and appliances and there was fresh paint on the walls. It was a great start I really wasn't expecting. They have a great inside staff that is available by phone or email almost anytime. All maintenance requests I've needed taken care of are submitted through the company website and handled in a very timely manner. I'm totally comfortable allowing any services associated with Purcell into my apartment when I'm not home. They run a very safe and trustworthy business. They offer online payment of rent which is super easy and seamless. Rent can be automatically paid, which I prefer, and there is no hassle of writing a check and mailing or driving to office to drop off. In the winter, I'm out the door early in the morning and I'm very impressed with their maintenance crew that has my walkway already shoveled and driveway paved. Can't ask for much more than that. Purcell Properties has been easy to work with when I've needed to sublet my place for a few months while I leave town for work. They helped me write a lease to help protect me and they take care of all administrative work from my lessee's. I especially like the peace and privacy Purcell Properties allows me to enjoy in my living space. I never have to worry about any degenerates or crazy people. If there are any issues, they are easy to approach and take care of any concerns in a professional manner. If you're looking for a professional group to rent from where there are no hassles, maintenance requests are completed in a timely manner, and you are afforded a clean and safe living environment then Purcell Properties is a great company to rent from. read more

I have been renting from Purcell Properties for the last two years, and just signed on for one more. The current office manager, Trista Kellman, is amazing! Exceptionally friendly and helpful. Having rented housing for the last 4 years from various companies, and having worked in the service industry before, I must say she is one of the best service staff I have ever interacted with. I am aware of the negative reviews about Purcell Properties here, and have also heard complains from friends, which is why I am rating them 4 out of 5, instead of a perfect 5. Rarely, problems do occur, things do get lost in the shuffle, or the company gets a little busy during peak periods. We need to realize that these are part and parcel of any reasonably sized rental operation, and we need to actually work with them too. The fact that Trista is willing to work with us to resolve these issues via prompt replies and a friendly attitude is a rarity among service staff and should be commended! read more

I lived on 68 Maple St in Apt 5 for last 3 years and sadly left the apartment last month to move cross country. This property is owned and managed by Purcell Properties. I had nothing short of a wonderful experience. The landlords and property manager, Trista were extremely attentive to repairs and maintenance work and usually all the repair work was done within 24h. Cannot say enough good things about Purcell Properties. The Office Manager is incredibly responsive, informative, and helpful. The maintenance team has always addressed any question or request I have, and is incredibly proactive as well. During a maintenance check up, the team noticed that the paint was chipping on my bathroom ceiling (I hadn't even noticed), they asked if they could repair it, and then when they did, they also replaced the bathroom light and vent. I lived at one of the Hanover locations, which is walking distance to town and the college. I moved because I graduated but would easily have continued living there. I cannot believe this place hadn't gone out of business yet. The service was atrocious, and the building was almost dangerously old. During the winter months, I was constantly freezing because the heating system was either 1) not functioning properly, 2) turned way too low. I tried contacting the office (spoke with Trista, I think), and they said they'll fix it. There was absolutely no change. Don't be misled by their "heating covered;" they also charged you extra costs during the winter months (up until April). I had to pay extra for my own personal heater because of the poor insulation in their properties. I'm so glad to have moved out and will never live here again. read more

I'd like to give a fair review of Purcell Properties, although I don't believe we were treated fairly when it came to giving our deposit money back. We took possession of the apartment first as a sublet and there was a cosmetic problem with the rug between the kitchen and dining room. This was noted on the moving in report. The manager indicated as long as we stated the issues, we would not be charged for damages. When we did move out this summer, we were charged not only an exorbitant rate for replacement of 1/4th of this worn out rug, but also overcharged for several other "damages." The apartment had mold (which ruined several of my items) because of either leaky windows or some sort of issue with the roof. There was always mold in the bathroom and our appliances were very old. Clearly this was an apartment that needed major updating but taking money from me was not the way to finance it. Also the fake nice act when showing perspective tenants around is really transparent. Some tenants are not treated respectfully here and I had the office manager dismiss me with a wave of her hand more than once. Note: the parking lot is very small for the amount of snow the area gets and you will be expected all winter to move your car so it can be plowed. If you don't you will be threatened with towing or actually get towed. This happened to my visiting friend and it cost her over $300 to get her car back. read more

I've lived in the Upper Valley for 8 years and Purcell gave me the best property management experience I've had by far. Their rental rates are competitive, much more reasonable compared to other housing in the area (a nice two bedroom goes for $1500-1700 and Purcell's price mark is in the $1200-1300 range). Their properties tend to be older renovated spaces but I prefer homes with character anyways and they do a great job updating their apartments with new appliances, etc. (personal laundry unit is a must for me). Their office management's response time is excellent and any time I've needed something fixed they are prompt and efficient. They also do a great job stewarding their tenants with neighborhood socials and even sent us cute holiday gift bags with candy - very sweet! They make sure you know your business is appreciated. I highly recommend them as your first stop if looking for a new place to live! read more

I have now had two different leases and apartments with Purcell and have been happy with their management. While rent in the area is high across the board, I feel Purcell has a variety of options for people with different financial situations. I feel they have a very appropriate and standard lease for tenants to sign. Nothing different from what I have signed in the past. I have been very pleased with Trista in the management office. She is always eager to help with my questions or requests (even when I bombard her with several the day I moved in). The owners, Kevin and Shannon, have always been available to stop by my apartment, even at night when I thought I didn't have hot water--which I did, I was just an idiot and didn't know how to use my faucet. My biggest praise for Purcell is definitely when I inquired about my apt and found out it was available a month before I actually needed it. They were able to work with me so that I was still able to get the apartment when I needed it. And the cleaning crew did a great job from the previous tenant, who wasn't very clean.
