This place needs a plaque for having the best 3 golpes in all of Washington heights. I've always enjoyed dinner here but coming here for breakfast exceeded my expectations. The staff here is always helpful. I've always gotten mixed reviews but everyone I know who comes here leaves happy and always comes back. They have the cleanest place I've seen, they're always organized and the staff is very professional in everything they do. My partner was dying to bring me here , he's been here before btw! We decided to go today in the afternoon like around 2PM It was decently packed and getting a lot of clientele. We walked in the lady asked us what type of rice and meat we wanted accompanied with beans if you'd like, they have a refreshing drink menu I got a passion fruit juice and my partner ordered a country club soda. Luckily they had seats in the back; we sat down and they brought us our drinks with a nice cup and straw As our food followed we also ordered a nice avocado green salad it was super well seasoned. My partner got the steak with White Rice and The Guandules ; since they were out of habichuelas ; (Which is a different type of beans) and i got pork chops with white rice and Guandules. I loved the flavor and seasoning of everything it was so flavorful and brought me back to my Dominican Republic roots since this is a Spanish Restaurant that you really don't want to miss if you walked past it. Food, service and ambience was just perfect. My friend was in town for one day and this was the place where she insisted on having lunch. Everyone had that steak with rice, beans, plantains and avocado. They also have tropical Caribbean sodas which was just refreshing. I will be back if ever in Washington heights again. Came in Mid Afternoon. I had Steak here during Covid. Best Skirt Steak I ever had. So this has been on my list for awhile. Not to say they weren't nice but if you don't speak Spanish, there was no interaction between the order and the check. Waitress didn't ask about refills or nothing. That was the first thing that rubbed me wrong. Second I asked about the Coconut Fish beforehand. Just to insure that's what it was. I bit into it and it was wrapped in Ham. I do not eat pork and why would I have to worry about pork being in my fish. But I spoke on it and they took it back without charge. Everything was good. Skirt Steak was good but I could it wasn't just cooked. May have been sitting for awhile. Not bad just not fresh out the pot. Drinks were good. $5 wasn't bad, usually $6-8 where I live. Chicken was well seasoned. Beans wasn't my thing but my girlfriend liked them and she doesn't usually do beans. The salad though. It was fresh. That's cool. But the hidden fact that the Salad itself is $8 and the Avocado is $6 is a ripoff. We were offered salad as if it was included with the meal Not as a separate meal altogether. That was over the top. And lastly gratuity was already added to my bill. I tip regardless and not even going by the service just as a common courtesy but that coupled with the fact we were ignored the whole time just wasn't it for me. I'll start off by saying that the food here is good. And this restaurant is also one of the MANY Latin restaurants that are on seemingly every other block in Washington Heights. So, if you don't end up eating here, I'm sure you'll be able to find another spot somewhere close and have food very comparable to what you'd find here. Started off with the roasted chicken and rice & beans. All serviceable. The chicken pieces were a bit small for my liking, but still pretty good. It's hard for any Latin restaurant to mess up rice, and thankfully this holds true for this spot. The difference is in how they make the beans. And the beans here are pretty solid. Their salad was plentiful but basic (corn, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, beets). Their sweet plantains were good... but again, who in this neighborhood is gonna mess that up? The service on the other hand... well, that was lacking. At first, our waitress kept asking us what we wanted as if she was in a hurry to use the bathroom. We had told her we needed more time to check out the menu (my dinner companion needed extra time to figure out what possible other items she wanted). Once we ordered our food, our waitress disappeared. Nowhere to be found... ever again. My chicken and cheese mofongo was sooo good. There was tons of chicken and cheese included and it wasn't overly dry at all. And i eat a lot of mofongo and am picky about levels of dryness. Loved how they packaged everything separately to avoid anything getting soggy. However what's with the attitudes?!?!? Not sure if it was because I'm not a man or they made the sad assumption that I don't speak Spanish. But when I went in to pick up my order, I was ignored. Only after a man walks in 2 minutes later and a female went over to help him did another female decide to finally approach me and with an attitude as she asks me "what you want?" That's when i responded IN SPANISH that I was picking up my order I placed on the phone for the mofongo with chicken and cheese. Food is pretty decent, wait times it's all over and they don't seem to understand it. Called and k was told 10 minutes. Got there 12 minutes and the lady said 10 more minutes. 7 minutes later the food runner says its not even on the grill. So I said forget it and give me something else. Prices are not as cheap as people seem to believe but maybe it's because they don't advertise all of them. My husband and I used to buy food from this place all the time. Slowly but surely, the prices have become UNREAL! Went in today and ordered from the food that has already been prepared. The Dulce de Leche was expired. The food was good. So I walked in for a soda and decided to try the food. The rice, beans and meat (fried steak) carne frita was good. The Parcha juice was tooo damn sweet, are they trying to kill someone with diabetes?!!!... Then, I asked for 2 desserts of the dulce de leche (milk sweet) to go, good thing I tasted it, it was expired, I almost puke. The waitress was minding other people's business and I had to constantly look and signal for her to come over. My son had the salami with ham sandwich and it was not all that, he said the ham tastes funny as if it was experied and it was too hot when served, he got a bit burn and dropped it when tasting it. Why would they serve something so hot? maybe they used the microwave to heat it up instead of cooking it on an order basis. I always order salami sandwich from other places and it is never so hot. Very reasonably priced Dominican food in an almost totally Dominican area on a street with countless Dominican oriented businesses. Came in for a late breakfast and got a sample with a bit of everything mangú (mashed up plantain), sweet plantain (maduros), wonderfully seasoned roast chicken, ribs, that awesome grilled cheese that Dominicans make (don't know what they call it), delicious onion, deep fried Dominican salami.. I found service to be good , the waitresses seemed friendly, the place seemed pretty clean and comfortable to me, but I was not there on a hot or cold day so I can't speak to the climate control issue addressed in a previous review. There are numerous boothes and tables to sit and also a small bar, a TV which when I came in was tuned to Spanish language news about the Venezuelan election results. Ive been to this place numerous times. When I lived in washington heights it was me and my husbands FAV place. The food is SO tasty and authentic dominican. If you order from th kitchen yes you will have to wait but you have to understandthey are making it from scratch (freshly cooked). It will be packed in the weekends, one problem I had was going on a festive day, i dn remember if it was easter or something it was really packed and we actually waited about 15 min and another group that came before us skipped us an took an available seat quickly. So obviosly the staff doesnt really acknowledge your wait time and take you into consideration. The chubby mexican girl just looked at us and didnt say a word. I was very upset considering we would always go on weekend so they did know us. We actually ended up leaving. Anyway food is great, service could be ALOT better. Don't get me wrong they have some pretty good food but lord god forbid you are going in there to buy food and take it home because those girls take forever to take your order I've literally stood there for like 10 minutes straight while they look at me and just tend to the customers sitting at the tables. The good is cheap and great authentic Dominican food jut like grandma would make it.
