The iconic Dominican restaurant is a joyful, loud and welcoming place. The line begins early but moves quickly. We ordered a lovely red wine and enjoyed our entrees: my friend had the half chicken; I ordered the calamari, which is house made. Although it stayed busy, we didn't feel rushed. We paid and headed across the street to the Imperial Palace to see Dudamel perform. It was a great meal followed by an amazing performance in a breathtaking setting. read more

11/10 Rotisserie chicken. I watched a Tik Tok recently talking about venturing out to find the best rotisserie chicken in NYC, and Malecon came in at 2nd/3rd. I had to try it out for myself since their #1 spot was really underwhelming. This spot really hit the spot and deserved to replace the #1 spot -- the chicken was moist, flavourful, and fresh. I could see why the lines to get in were so busy, so try to get here before noon, especially on a Saturday. The maduros and yucca fries were also special -- fried just enough to caramelise while also being crispy, my favourite. Affordable? Check. Good vibes? Check. Community staple? Check. Only come if you want to be part of the winning team. read more

While exploring the Washington Heights I decided to try this busy restaurant. They are a Dominican food staple. Unfortunately I was unable to get a table due to how busy the restaurant was today. I ended up just ordering a small side salad to go. The restaurant staff was extremely busy but I appreciated how they were conscious of all of the customers moving in and out of the building. I ordered it online and was able to quickly pick up my meal and take it to go. However I definitely want to come back to try some of the rotisserie chicken that they are constantly cooking. Beyond Beyonce's very festive and it reminds me of being back in the Dominican Republic. read more

This is my first time trying Dominican cuisine, so I was very excited! I came in and was seated by the staff and we had a great time. Service is homey and our waitress treated us well, despite the language barrier. Inside has lots of seating and it is very active. My favorite item was the mofongo, I love the texture and sauce it came with. The chicken we got was a little dry though. I had a very filling meal for a very good price, and I left happy! read more

Malecon is where you go when you are craving good, juicy chicken. It is absolutely worth the trip up to Washington Heights, and you are pretty much guaranteed to leave full and satisfied. I went with a whole chicken along with tostones and maduros, and everything hit the spot. The portions are generous and the flavors are exactly what you want from a place like this. It is a true NYC staple. The vibe inside is lively, especially on weekends, which adds to the experience. I would definitely go back. read more

My fav place to order Spanish roasted chicken as take out. The flavor is no match at all!!

First time here and I can say that I loved everything about it except for my brothers dish - LOL. And what I mean by that, you don't see his plate in my pictures because he eventually took over mine and I ate his. Yes, he's one of those. Pork Mofongo: 10/10 As someone who is a South Pacific Islander (Tongan) this dish felt like home. We eat the same thing, the same way, but presentation here was different. I enjoyed my plate so much and even with the sauce they give you to either dip or pour over was thee best thing added to my dish. They also give you a few pieces of pork belly and that was a no brainer. Eventually my brother wanted some of mine so we switch. (Totally regret it) Fried Chicken Chunks: 9/10 my husband loved it. He said, how can you go wrong with fried chicken any way. Served with yellow rice and black beans. Mixed appetizer: 9/10 Honestly, I wish they added more pieces with this dish. We loved everything about it except we will order another one but didn't want to get super full. Shrimp Mofongo: 9/10 my brothers dish. I wish they added more of that yellow gravy like they do with the pork. I would have enjoyed it even more, but that's how it's served so I should have asked for more. I will say, my stomach didn't react to it that well because I was rush to get into the little girls rooms - YIKES! Overall: 9/10 the ambiance is super family based with great staff. You can tell its also a staple in the neighborhood and I was grateful to have been able to be here. I will say, back at home when you ask for sauce on the side, they give it to you, but I've noticed out here, every drop counts so I had to get use to the portion they was giving out. I will definitely be back and trying something new. read more

Malecon is a staple in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan. They've been serving authentic Dominican cuisine since 1987 and are known for their signature roasted chicken! The menu offers a variety of traditional dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - mangu, mofongo, sancocho, arroz con habichuelas, churrasco, bistec encebollado, pescado frito, chimichurri sandwich, etc. They have lunch specials for $15 as well as daily specials. You can wash anything down with their natural juices, house cocktails, beer, or wine. Everything is reasonably priced and the portion sizes are satisfying. I stopped by in the morning and the restaurant was busy, bustling, and full of locals, which is always a good sign. I could smell the aroma of rotisserie chicken and spices as soon as I stepped inside! The atmosphere is casual with plenty of seating for small and large groups. I needed a big breakfast before a long road trip, so I ordered: *Mangu with Tres Golpes $12 (Dominican breakfast that includes boiled, mashed green plantains with butter & salt topped with pickled onions, fried cheese, fried eggs, & fried salami + sausage) This is the breakfast of champions! It's a hearty and filling meal to start your day. The mangu had an earthy & savory flavor with a smooth and creamy consistency. The pickled onions were marinated in vinegar & salt, which added a tangy burst of flavor in every bite. The fluffy eggs, salty salami, and crispy fried cheese were the perfect complements. I could tell this was made with love! If you're in the mood for Dominican cuisine, whether it's for breakfast, lunch, or dinner... you can't go wrong with trying Malecon. I've got my eyes on trying their iconic, juicy chicken and famous mofongo soon! read more

Now, this was a must try...especially after all of the reviews saying it might be the best chicken in NY and my goodness did it hit the spot. We ordered a bit of everything off the menu to try it all. Granted driving from Long Island to Washington heights you have to make it worth it, and that's exactly what we did Genesis was a great waitress with impeccable service. The ambience for a Monday afternoon was insane, completely packed out. We ordered the following: Picadera Frita Pequena 1 Pollo Entero arrozB hab.R 1 Alas De Pollo con picante 1 Cocacola 1 SWAPPLES Rasberry Peach 1 Maduros 2 Mojito xtra ($1.00) 2 Mojito xtra ($7,00) 1 2 Mojito xtra ($1.00) 1 Botella de Agua Everything was extremely fresh and absolutely incredible. Leftovers still tasted amazing. Now I can see why this place is so highly recommended and in demand. You cannot skip this spot. Protect Malecon at all costs. Trust me. read more

Malecon Restaurant - Dominican Near Me - New York, New York

The most famous rotisserie chicken in the tri state area, even more than Costco. A Dominican spot that shows you their cuisines global influence and their differences to others like Puerto Rican and Cuban. It's a long standing stallwart in the ethnic food community in NYC. The birds are cooks so long you can almost cut break it down with a fork and once they do and pour that wasakaka sauce on it', it's fire. It's like Hainan chicken with bite. It's a sit down place but with dark casual vibes. It's priced right considering they have a big menu, big, goat stew, breakfast, carribbean items, spanish items, western items all with an island flare. Service is really good if you know what your ordering, if it's your first time and asking all kinds of questions they don't style you out as much. Prices were always reasonable until the pandemic and then they went up, but not alot and not on all items, items you didn't think. Like Costco you gotta use those loss leaders to hook people on items your known for. To me it's not unaffordable and less worth splurging on. I like the shrimp mofongo becuase it's got shrimp and little bits of chicharrones, it's a texture and flavor collage. Shrimp and squid soup is alot less Siete mares and more arrozy if you will. Don't get the paella, get the spanish fried rice, it's less expensive, just as big and to me more flavorful. You'll consider the half chicken with a side order and then see the side order is almost as much as the half order and then order the whole chicken with no sides. Don't forget to get the Wasakaka sauce. It's tangy, sour, savory, spicy, really brightens the richness of the chicken, which is densely flavorful, soft and juicy on it's own. As appetizing as the fried beef and onions is, it's in no way worth it. If you ordered what you think you want it's Peter Luger pricing and you'll be full, but not super satisfied on value. $40 snapper when it's half that at places like Johnnys Reef. It's a must try becuase of the chicken, but not somewhere you could or should eat at often becuase it's value was flavor and authenticity, but it's prices aren't keeping them competative with other cuisines. It's less expensive to eat at Bark BBQ. I love coming here, but it's a rarity and not even a place I go to everytime I'm in NYC anymore. read more

Malecon has been around for many years & rightfully so at that. I've tried a plethora of items from here but I would easily say that my two favorites would be the 1. Sopa de pollo & 2. Mofongo de pollo. The giant chunks of yuca in the sopa with a bunch of lime squeezed up top...pure bliss. The mofongo de pollo is also very good & a gigantic portion as well. Next thing to try- mofongo de camarones con queso! read more

Food was amaaaaaazing. And the staff was super nice. Overly nice some Might say. Very pleasant waitresses and they didn't mind explaining dishes to me. Oh my gosh. I was in New York earlier this month, and after taking some time to get adjusted back to my time zone and spending time getting back in the swing of work and the daily grind, I am finally writing my reviews for the places I went to. I always wanted to have Dominican food, and there's nowhere better in America for it than NYC. That being said, I had no reference point on where to go, hence Reddit. A lot of people on different posts kept saying Malecon was a must, and after eating the mangu, I can't disagree at all. The mofongo was starch galore in the heartiest, most filling way possible. The salami was crispy and fried to perfection. The fried eggs were just amazing to eat with the cheese, and the onions just tied it all together. The employee who rang me up was super helpful recommending things since this was my first time eating mangu, and she really helped me feel like a local. The place wasn't crowded at all when I got there, but it got slightly busier as I got closer to paying for my meal. Aside from employee/customer interactions and the sound of the cooking, Malecon was not loud at all. My deepest regret was knowing I could only eat my plate once. If any of my friends asked me where to go for food in NYC, Malecon would be one of, if not the first place I told them about. read more

Malecon Restaurant - Mangú with eggs, salami, cheese, and onions - Dominican Near Me - New York, New York

I've been in a search the past few months for the best roasted chicken in New York City. Everyone in my comments has been saying I HAVE to try Malecon. Malecon this, Malecon that. When I went to the one on the Upper West Side and just felt it was a bit uninspired, everyone then harshly informed me I went to the wrong location. "We only claim tha one in the heights!!" referring to the Washington Heights Location. I put my ego aside, and thought if people are so passionate about this then there must be some merit to it. My big bro and I made the 1 hour and 6 minute trip on a blessed Sunday to see what all the hype was about. From the window, you can see 6 different rotisserie ovens all filled with mouth watering chicken. A beautiful site. Right when we walked in, I understood. There is so much soul in here. It was JUMPIN at 2:30pm. There were two separate birthday parties with tables of 8+ where the whole restaurant joined in to sing happy birthday. The staff and customers were interacting like lifelong friends. There was a table of 5 dudes who cheersed a plastic cup filled with a shot Crown Royal, talking about "I'm so grateful for you guys..." Just the ultimate community feel in here. We were STARVING and vibes were up, so we ordered a feast: 2 half chickens, a side of rice and beans, 2 different types of plantains, fried chicken, mofongo, steak, fried rice with chicken and spanish sausage, and some french fries. Honestly, everything was fantastic, but I'm really the rotisserie chicken expert so here it goes: Having tried over 35 different roasted chicken spots in NYC at the time of writing this, Malecon is unquestionably top 3. It's a true chicken titan. Crispy golden brown skin, tender juicy meat that is flavorful and well seasoned, and not overly salty. Fall off the bone chicken. This is just about as close to a perfect chicken you can get. They had this green sauce too that big bro and I could not get over. Most green sauces these chicken places have are super heavy and seemingly Mayo based, but this one was light and just added a slight accent to the flavor of the meat. We ended up putting it on everything and had to keep asking for more. I also NEED to shout out our waitress. She was unreal. Checking on us just enough without being overbearing, smiling everytime we asked for more green sauce, and boxed up our food with meticulous attention to detail like my latino Granny used to do when I'd go over to her place for dinner. So much love in here. After I posted a pic on my Instagram story, this random guy DM'd me saying "I got this place's logo tattooed on me for a reason." I think that says more than these words I'm writing could ever say. On their website, Malecon refers to themselves as "El Rey Del Pollo," and they just might be. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__ read more

We took the subway to Washington Heights to explore the neighborhoods and worked up an appetite. I picked out the Malecon restaurant in advance after reviewing the menu and the many good reviews. We were seated quickly and spent a few minutes looking over the substantial menu. I chose one of the daily specials and my wife selected what she thought would be lighter a bowl of their Sopa De Pollo. A server brought a plate of warm bread and after a few minutes our food arrived - it was plentiful! I enjoyed the Pernil which was slow-roasted marinated pork, served with a side of Moro Gandules (mixed rice with pigeon peas). The pork was so very tender and flavorful - would definitely order again. Honestly, I was not a fan of the mixed rice (I do not love peas) but that's my fault for ordering. My dining partner enjoyed her bowl of Sopa De Pollo, flavorful broth with lots of big chunks of Chicken. We shared a plate of Maduros (sweet fried plantains). So tasty. The prices were very affordable and the serving plentiful. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my Pork, next time I would order one of the dishes with the roast chicken (you can see the rotisserie in the front window and an employee cutting up the freshly roasted chicken as you enter the restaurant. read more

Here's the deal: I considered giving Malecon 4 stars instead of 5 for giving me too much food. I mean, gahdamn. Three sizeable fried pork chops in my single order of chuletas? Someone should have told me this place is family style! Malecon has been around forever but I hadn't been in about 20 years. Obviously, my eyes were bigger than my stomach because I ordered pork chops, tostones, white rice and gandules. With sangria. Oh and morir sonado to go for my nostalgic walk from the Heights to Harlem. The tostones were great, so were the pork chops but the star of the show was the white rice and the green peas. Something so simple, done so right...Lawd. The morir sonando was delicious too. And the service was wonderful. It's a busy place, kinda festive and all authentic. damn...might be the best, juiciest and most flavorful chicken my partner and i have ever had. and for the price? diabolical. where tf have we been all our lives? our first time in washington heights and naturally we had to stop by and make it worth it. the food options here are large, and are likely to appeal to anyone. i opted for the chicharrone option and it was sooooooooo crispy, meaty, and delicious. the plantains with them were also divine. boyfriend ordered the chicken and we were slamming our knees with how delicious it was. i treated myself with tamarindo juice that inevitably hit the spot. the staff here are all super nice and i felt like i was at home just eating here in the later half of the evening. the vibe was homey, boisterious, and comfortable. mostly everyone here is minding their business eating their dinner with close friends or family. i was thankful that despite the alcohol options available, there wasn't any extremely drunk and obnoxious diners nearby. definitely a place to write home about with good portions, warm staff, and great value. will definitely be dragging all my friends and family here. read more

Red beans had a smoky flavor and love the rice. Rice always had subtle and light oily seasoning giving the rice a good flavor. Not sticky at all and very tasty! Maybe I didn't order the right thing, but I wasn't too impressed. Haven't ate Dominican food in so long so was excited to try it out. I really need to make a trip up north for all the great food, especially to Washington Heights. Was seated promptly which I was very happy about. - Mofongo De Camarones - I really liked the sauce they had on as it had a lot of shrimp flavor, but I felt like the mofongo itself was actually quite dry. Definitely needed more sauce to finish the giant plantain ball. I did appreciate how much shrimp they had though. - Whole Chicken with Yellow Rice and Black Beans - I know this is THE thing to get here, but I wasn't a big fan of the chicken. The green sauce tasted like Salsa Verde and there definitely wasn't enough to cover the entire chicken which was quite dry. I did like the skin, but the flavor really just ended there. The yellow rice and black beans didn't have a lot of flavor. Overall, I felt that this meal was a bit too dry and not sure if I would come back for that reason. read more

Right across from United Palace, this place gets crowded after shows. The turnover for tables is quick though. Wasn't too familiar with the area, so this seemed like a solid choice given the amount of reviews and high rating. Mamey shake was great. Never had the fruit before this. Kind of like a more mellowed out papaya. I liked it a lot. Caribbean soup was very homey. Tasted something like my mom would make even though it's a different culture. Oxtails, cassava, carrots, and some other veggies. Very filling. Rice was dry, but as long as you had it with the soup it was fine. Beans were good. Mofongo was drier than I expected, but I loved the garlic flavor. The gravy helped a little and added more flavor. Dipped the tostones in the gravy for them to be less dry. Loved the flavor of the pernil, but again it was a little dry. Didn't have a really crunchy exterior. Chicken had good flavor, but the white meat was dry as well. It's hard to make a rotisserie chicken moist throughout. Tres leches was moist. Not too sweet, but the cake seemed a little bit more grainy to me. Not as smooth as I like cake to help. All the portions were massive and super affordable. We ordered four things, but three would've been plenty for four people. Maybe even two with a side would've been enough. read more

I came with a friend to get a to go order while we were in the area on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant was completely packed when we arrived and seemed like seating would be difficult to find. We waited for our to go orders to be taken and it took a very long time. However, as soon as we went up to the cashier and placed our order we received our food right away. We ordered a lunch special of the BEEF STEW with YELLOW RICE. The beef stew flavor was pretty good but I was hoping it would have more liquid with it. Additionally, the beef was so dry. However, the veggies it was cooked with were tender and soaked up the flavor of the stew well. The rice and beans it came with were heavenly. So delicious. Some of the best rice and beans I have ever had. We also ordered a WHOLE CHICKEN with yellow rice and a side of red beans. Again the rice and beans were fabulous - I wish I could eat those all the time. The chicken though seasoned well was also a little bit on the dry side which was disappointing. However, the portions of all the items were great and we were able to get multiple meals out of it. Additionally, the salsa they give you with the meal was so good but I really wish they gave more than just three small containers. All in all, flavor wise, everything was delicious especially the beans and rice; however, the meat items were quite dry unfortunately. read more

The staff was pleasant. This restaurant has been around for a few decades. They have remodeled the place and it looks great. I used to live in the area 20 years ago and ordered food all the time. They are well known for their rotisserie chicken. One other thing they do great and I've had is Churasco meat. But in this ocasión I was craving a Pork Mofongo. I forgot the picture because I was so hungry. The Mofongo was excellent. They added the side sauce which was perfect. They only give you two small pieces of Pork Chicharon. I thought it was too little. The flavors were great. I tried the Quipe but I was disappointed as it wasn't as warm and it was extremely dry and locked a bit of flavor so we left it. read more

Arrived here with a pretty sizable group for a friend's birthday celebration. The establishment does not take reservations, but thankfully we didn't have to wait long for outdoor seating, which was enclosed so in the shade and not too hot. I had to get the Soursop Smoothie, which is difficult to find. The drink was thick, smooth, tropical tasting, refreshing, and had just the right amount of sweetness. For my entree, I decided to go with the Mofongo with Steak and Garlic Shrimp. This was presented beautifully. The Steak was on the side with perfect grill marks, along with onion and pepper on top, while the Mofongo was in a wonderfully flavorful sauce with nice sized shrimp all around. The Steak was tender, delightfully well seasoned. The Shrimp was succulent and juicy. The Mofongo was pretty good, but I missed the bits of pork usually mixed in. Service was top notch. The waiters were friendly and helpful, making sure we were well taken care of throughout our time here. I would definitely be open to returning to try the Fried Pork Chops or Red Snapper. read more
