First time here and I can say that I loved everything about it except for my brothers dish - LOL. And what I mean by that, you don't see his plate in my pictures because he eventually took over mine and I ate his. Yes, he's one of those. I enjoyed my plate so much and even with the sauce they give you to either dip or pour over was thee best thing added to my dish. They also give you a few pieces of pork belly and that was a no brainer. Eventually my brother wanted some of mine so we switch. (Totally regret it) Fried Chicken Chunks: 9/10 my husband loved it. I was in New York earlier this month, and after taking some time to get adjusted back to my time zone and spending time getting back in the swing of work and the daily grind, I am finally writing my reviews for the places I went to. A lot of people on different posts kept saying Malecon was a must, and after eating the mangu, I can't disagree at all. The mofongo was starch galore in the heartiest, most filling way possible. The salami was crispy and fried to perfection. The fried eggs were just amazing to eat with the cheese, and the onions just tied it all together. The employee who rang me up was super helpful recommending things since this was my first time eating mangu, and she really helped me feel like a local. The place wasn't crowded at all when I got there, but it got slightly busier as I got closer to paying for my meal. Aside from employee/customer interactions and the sound of the cooking, Malecon was not loud at all. My deepest regret was knowing I could only eat my plate once. The most famous rotisserie chicken in the tri state area, even more than Costco. A Dominican spot that shows you their cuisines global influence and their differences to others like Puerto Rican and Cuban. It's a long standing stallwart in the ethnic food community in NYC. The birds are cooks so long you can almost cut break it down with a fork and once they do and pour that wasakaka sauce on it', it's fire. It's like Hainan chicken with bite. It's a sit down place but with dark casual vibes. It's priced right considering they have a big menu, big, goat stew, breakfast, carribbean items, spanish items, western items all with an island flare. Service is really good if you know what your ordering, if it's your first time and asking all kinds of questions they don't style you out as much. Prices were always reasonable until the pandemic and then they went up, but not alot and not on all items, items you didn't think. Like Costco you gotta use those loss leaders to hook people on items your known for. To me it's not unaffordable and less worth splurging on. I like the shrimp mofongo becuase it's got shrimp and little bits of chicharrones, it's a texture and flavor collage. Shrimp and squid soup is alot less Siete mares and more arrozy if you will. Don't get the paella, get the spanish fried rice, it's less expensive, just as big and to me more flavorful. You'll consider the half chicken with a side order and then see the side order is almost as much as the half order and then order the whole chicken with no sides. Don't forget to get the Wasakaka sauce. It's tangy, sour, savory, spicy, really brightens the richness of the chicken, which is densely flavorful, soft and juicy on it's own. As appetizing as the fried beef and onions is, it's in no way worth it. If you ordered what you think you want it's Peter Luger pricing and you'll be full, but not super satisfied on value. $40 snapper when it's half that at places like Johnnys Reef. It's a must try becuase of the chicken, but not somewhere you could or should eat at often becuase it's value was flavor and authenticity, but it's prices aren't keeping them competative with other cuisines. It's less expensive to eat at Bark BBQ. I love coming here, but it's a rarity and not even a place I go to everytime I'm in NYC anymore. read more

I've been in a search the past few months for the best roasted chicken in New York City. Everyone in my comments has been saying I HAVE to try Malecon. Malecon this, Malecon that. When I went to the one on the Upper West Side and just felt it was a bit uninspired, everyone then harshly informed me I went to the wrong location. "We only claim tha one in the heights!!" referring to the Washington Heights Location. I put my ego aside, and thought if people are so passionate about this then there must be some merit to it. My big bro and I made the 1 hour and 6 minute trip on a blessed Sunday to see what all the hype was about. From the window, you can see 6 different rotisserie ovens all filled with mouth watering chicken. A beautiful site. Right when we walked in, I understood. There is so much soul in here. It was JUMPIN at 2:30pm. There were two separate birthday parties with tables of 8+ where the whole restaurant joined in to sing happy birthday. The staff and customers were interacting like lifelong friends. There was a table of 5 dudes who cheersed a plastic cup filled with a shot Crown Royal, talking about "I'm so grateful for you guys..." Just the ultimate community feel in here. We were STARVING and vibes were up, so we ordered a feast: 2 half chickens, a side of rice and beans, 2 different types of plantains, fried chicken, mofongo, steak, fried rice with chicken and spanish sausage, and some french fries. Honestly, everything was fantastic, but I'm really the rotisserie chicken expert so here it goes: Having tried over 35 different roasted chicken spots in NYC at the time of writing this, Malecon is unquestionably top 3. It's a true chicken titan. Crispy golden brown skin, tender juicy meat that is flavorful and well seasoned, and not overly salty. Fall off the bone chicken. This is just about as close to a perfect chicken you can get. They had this green sauce too that big bro and I could not get over. Most green sauces these chicken places have are super heavy and seemingly Mayo based, but this one was light and just added a slight accent to the flavor of the meat. We ended up putting it on everything and had to keep asking for more. I also NEED to shout out our waitress. She was unreal. Checking on us just enough without being overbearing, smiling everytime we asked for more green sauce, and boxed up our food with meticulous attention to detail like my latino Granny used to do when I'd go over to her place for dinner. So much love in here. After I posted a pic on my Instagram story, this random guy DM'd me saying "I got this place's logo tattooed on me for a reason." We took the subway to Washington Heights to explore the neighborhoods and worked up an appetite. I picked out the Malecon restaurant in advance after reviewing the menu and the many good reviews. We were seated quickly and spent a few minutes looking over the substantial menu. I chose one of the daily specials and my wife selected what she thought would be lighter a bowl of their Sopa De Pollo. A server brought a plate of warm bread and after a few minutes our food arrived - it was plentiful! I enjoyed the Pernil which was slow-roasted marinated pork, served with a side of Moro Gandules (mixed rice with pigeon peas). The pork was so very tender and flavorful - would definitely order again. Honestly, I was not a fan of the mixed rice (I do not love peas) but that's my fault for ordering. My dining partner enjoyed her bowl of Sopa De Pollo, flavorful broth with lots of big chunks of Chicken. We shared a plate of Maduros (sweet fried plantains). So tasty. The prices were very affordable and the serving plentiful. Here's the deal: I considered giving Malecon 4 stars instead of 5 for giving me too much food. I mean, gahdamn. Three sizeable fried pork chops in my single order of chuletas? Someone should have told me this place is family style! Malecon has been around forever but I hadn't been in about 20 years. Obviously, my eyes were bigger than my stomach because I ordered pork chops, tostones, white rice and gandules. With sangria. Oh and morir sonado to go for my nostalgic walk from the Heights to Harlem. The tostones were great, so were the pork chops but the star of the show was the white rice and the green peas. Something so simple, done so right...Lawd. The morir sonando was delicious too. And the service was wonderful. It's a busy place, kinda festive and all authentic. damn...might be the best, juiciest and most flavorful chicken my partner and i have ever had. and for the price? diabolical. where tf have we been all our lives? our first time in washington heights and naturally we had to stop by and make it worth it. the food options here are large, and are likely to appeal to anyone. i opted for the chicharrone option and it was sooooooooo crispy, meaty, and delicious. the plantains with them were also divine. boyfriend ordered the chicken and we were slamming our knees with how delicious it was. i treated myself with tamarindo juice that inevitably hit the spot. the staff here are all super nice and i felt like i was at home just eating here in the later half of the evening. the vibe was homey, boisterious, and comfortable. mostly everyone here is minding their business eating their dinner with close friends or family. i was thankful that despite the alcohol options available, there wasn't any extremely drunk and obnoxious diners nearby. definitely a place to write home about with good portions, warm staff, and great value. will definitely be dragging all my friends and family here. read more

Came to bring my wife to a nearby hospital for a test at Columbia Presbyterian. I got a spot on Broadway and 174th, got out of the car and found this place. When I walked in, it was lively, it was crowded, friendly, the food looked phenomenal and the portions are huge. I sat down for lunch and got a Cubano sandwich and some sweet plantains. Oxtails, cassava, carrots, and some other veggies. Very filling. Rice was dry, but as long as you had it with the soup it was fine. Beans were good. Mofongo was drier than I expected, but I loved the garlic flavor. The gravy helped a little and added more flavor. Dipped the tostones in the gravy for them to be less dry. Loved the flavor of the pernil, but again it was a little dry. Didn't have a really crunchy exterior. Chicken had good flavor, but the white meat was dry as well. It's hard to make a rotisserie chicken moist throughout. Tres leches was moist. Not too sweet, but the cake seemed a little bit more grainy to me. Not as smooth as I like cake to help. However, the veggies it was cooked with were tender and soaked up the flavor of the stew well. The rice and beans it came with were heavenly. So delicious. Some of the best rice and beans I have ever had. We also ordered a WHOLE CHICKEN with yellow rice and a side of red beans. Again the rice and beans were fabulous - I wish I could eat those all the time. The chicken though seasoned well was also a little bit on the dry side which was disappointing. However, the portions of all the items were great and we were able to get multiple meals out of it. Additionally, the salsa they give you with the meal was so good but I really wish they gave more than just three small containers. Arrived here with a pretty sizable group for a friend's birthday celebration. The establishment does not take reservations, but thankfully we didn't have to wait long for outdoor seating, which was enclosed so in the shade and not too hot. I had to get the Soursop Smoothie, which is difficult to find. The drink was thick, smooth, tropical tasting, refreshing, and had just the right amount of sweetness. For my entree, I decided to go with the Mofongo with Steak and Garlic Shrimp. This was presented beautifully. The Steak was on the side with perfect grill marks, along with onion and pepper on top, while the Mofongo was in a wonderfully flavorful sauce with nice sized shrimp all around. The Steak was tender, delightfully well seasoned. The Shrimp was succulent and juicy. The Mofongo was pretty good, but I missed the bits of pork usually mixed in. Service was top notch. This place was very full on Saturday evening. For good reason too! The food was delicious and the servings were extremely large portions so if you're a light eater, I suggest you bring a friend or two to share with. We had the whole pollo asado (whole roasted chicken), arroz y habichuelas negras and rojas (rice with black and red beans), salad, ensalada de papa (potato salad), yucca frita (fried yucca), and tostones (fried plantains). My Peruvian friend said it reminded her of foods from her country. It was very flavorful and filling. They definitely want to make sure they revisit here when they come back. I'm also adding this as a place to hit up when I'm in NYC. The cost was a little pricey, but if you're sharing with someone it's pretty reasonable.
