There used to be hardly anyplace to eat except fast food, like Burger King! Roots, is located right after the first truck stop after you get off the freeway, just turn right and you're there. I thought I'd check it out and I saw there was a lunch buffet offered all weekdays from 10 an till 2 pm for $20 per person. I know a buffet is a way to please the whole crew. We've been to many other Indian Buffets before and I know my guys really love Tandoori Chicken and naan. So I went in to check it out and holy moly, this was the most dinky Indian buffet I ever saw! The steam table was like 1/3 the size of most buffets I've been to, but if they have what we like, it might still work out, cause there's a lot on an Indian buffet I just don't eat ... OK, some of the things in those tubs are just a little too weird for me. Some of the tubs weren't even filled yet. But the deal breaker here was there was NO Tandoori Chicken! I never heard of an Indian Buffet that didn't have the most common dish, Tandoori Chicken! I asked and they said no Tandoori Chicken! There's no way I can take my crew here, we'll have to find some other place to eat. I had high hopes, but this Indian place ain't gonna work out for us especially at $25 per person including tax and a little tip, this buffet isn't worth that. There's pizza, Chinese and Mexican just up the street.

My kids came with this time and enjoyed the pineapple shrimp curry and the mango curry (I forget…read morethe unique name of the mango dish but on the menu it had a crown icon and was not the mango one with the basil)-- both entrees were ordered in mild. These flavors were completely new to me, I've never had curries from an Indian restaurant that tasted like these. The pineapple curry was sweet but a little tangy and reminded me a bit of Thai curry (perhaps turmeric was really elevated in this curry?). The mango curry was also very sweet, it almost tasted like a sweetened butter chicken curry (specifically the northern Indian version of butter chicken-- if you know, you know). My son said the sweet flavor of the mango chicken curry reminded him of orange chicken from Chinese takeout and funny enough I thought it actually kinda did too! While these dishes were a hit with the kids (ages 7, 5, and 2) most adult tastebuds would prefer ordering them with at least some spice to balance out the intense sweetness (otherwise it can just seem "1 note"-- but 1 note "mild" was absolutely perfect for our young children who find even ground black pepper to be "spicy" haha). Maharaja Royal Bites, you just keep impressing me! I'm super happy we found these kid friendly options in your menu. Oh, ps, the kids LOVED their fried chicken appetizer too! Yelpers, ahelpful tip, we've noticed that here a "mild" spicy level can vary based on the dish. Sometimes it means literally no spice (like in the kid-friendly pineapple shrimp and mango curry) and other times we have found that it meant "yes, there is spice, and it's certainly more noticeable than black-- or even white ground-- pepper).

The Vijawada Chicken Biriyani is a must order. You can order different spice levels, but the very hot will give you a run for your money in the best possible way. I'm also a huge fan of the Masala Dosa. The Chicken 65 appetizer is also a great way to start the meal. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala once and while it was good, there wasn't much chicken in the dish and compared to 7-Spices' other offerings, it felt lackluster. The goat was a hit for them, in fact it impressed my friend so much that she's planning another pilgrimage for just the goat curry, Due to cultural differences, the saag paneer was not a hit for them, they commented it was too mushy, great more for me after explaining to them this is the way it's made. Being the first time I ordered the lamb korma, I didn't know what to expect, it was different from what I envisioned, we all commented that it was too sweet. They gave us complimentary garlic naan which was nice, my friend enjoyed it since I don't normally order naan, I just like the basamati rice better. Another successful meal at Taste of India!
