Arun goes out of his way to make sure we get the food to our specifications and are pleased. And his memory is phenomenal. I can't believe this place has been hiding in a gas station just 2 minutes from my house, and I had no idea! Thankfully, Yelp led me to this convenient haven of flavor, and we finally got to try it last week with a takeout order. We ordered the chicken tikka, chana masala, garlic naan, and samosas. Everything was absolutely delicious! They gave us plenty of rice, and the garlic naan was plentiful and only $2--such a great deal. My only small complaint is that the samosas were covered in chana masala, which made them a bit soupy. It was still tasty, but I would have preferred plain samosas, which I didn't see as an option on the menu. Ordering online was super easy, and the food was ready in just 15 minutes. Tried Clay of an Indian in Reno and had a mixed experience. The butter paneer was pretty good overall -- nice sauce, solid flavor -- but it felt like it was missing something. Most versions include peas or a bit more complexity, and this one was just a little one-note. Paneer could've been a bit juicier. The chicken tikka masala, unfortunately, was disappointing. It tasted mostly like dark-meat or even frozen chicken, and the dish was loaded with onions and bell peppers instead of actual chicken. It didn't feel like a great value when most of the bowl wasn't even meat. Not a terrible meal, but definitely not as good as some other Indian spots in town. Ok, after one takeout experience, I think this may be my favorite non-vegetarian Indian restaurant in Reno. Yes, I have tried others. Yes, I know Indian food! I lived in the Baltimore-DC area for 11 years and had amazing Indian food there. I agree with other reviewers that Clay Oven knows how to use spices in their dishes! Often my complaint with other Indian restaurants is that the spice level is missing, and I'm not talking about just heat level but actually earthy, herby flavors. The butter chicken was delicious. Not too oily! Not too creamy (yes, that can be a problem). I really enjoyed the aloo gobi because of the fresh herbs. And the prices are reasonable for what you get! Just spent $2500 unexpected dollars on my motorhome A/C issue and a hotel room and needed some happiness and The Clay Oven came through!! I've had Clay Oven a few times from delivery and catering so I haven't actually been by the truck yet but the food is amazing! The first time I tried Clay Oven I ordered the butter chicken, the samosa plate, garlic naan, and the lamb briyani. The butter chicken with the garlic naan bread is some of the best butter chicken I've had. I was recommended the samosa plate and it did not disappoint. It comes with 2 samosas covered in chickpeas and a tamarind-mint sauce. While the dish itself is vegetarian they also have a vegan option available! Lastly, we ordered the lamb briyani. While I personally am not a huge fan of lamb I have to admit it was quite good, and my lamb loving friends literally ate it all up! The next time I was able to try Clay Oven was at a party. The food was delivered hot and ready to eat and was very well packed. There were a few other new dishes including chicken tikka masala and aloo gobi, cauliflower and potatoes. However, there is so much more on the menu I still want to try like the goat and other vegetarian dishes. The thing that makes Clay Oven stand out to me is the spices. All of the food is so rich and flavorful. The portions are very reasonable and I had enough to take leftovers for lunch the next day. My husband and I ordered food for takeout from here this evening and boy were we disappointed. We ordered chicken Tikka masala and lamb vindaloo with two orders of garlic Naan. Usually when we order lamb vindaloo from other restaurants the lamb is super tender, however it wasn't the case with this restaurant it was super hard and chewy! Extremely inedible unfortunately. Moving on to the chicken tikka masala we got it was okay.... just okay the sauce was a bit too sweet for my liking but at least it was edible. The garlic naan wasn't very garlicky at all we didn't even taste any kind of garlic on it and the pieces were extremely small honestly looked like we were only given one and not two. Can't say it's gas station food just because it's actually in a gas station. 10/10 would highly recommend, I enjoy the chicken Marsala but I know all their dishes are delicious! I was craving curry today and decided to order from here for the first time. Very easy ordering and pickup, everyone was kind inside. The chicken tikka masala is super tasty. I would consider their spice level HOT, to be a bit over the spice of a jalapeño and slowly builds. It's a nice kick but if you want more than that, I would get extra hot. I would have liked a bit more chicken in the curry but for the price it's very hard to beat around Reno. The garlic naan was also toasty and chewy to perfection. And the rice was good as well, a bit softer than most places I've had but it all tasted great. I would definitely come back here again. read more

The definition of hole in the wall place. We wanted to get some Indian food for our lunch break and came across this place on yelp. At first we were confused if it was a food truck or not. But it's located inside a gas station. Don't get nervous all you gotta do is order on the counter, and the menu is also at the counter. This place was very good. I got the tikka masala and with garlic naan bread, and it was very good. Everything was made to order so you know it's fresh. You can legit see who's cooking it behind the counter, and the did not skimp on the spices. Overall very good Indian place in my opinion. Also you get plenty of food for the price you pay. read more

This is a Reno gem! I am so glad my son found this via DOORDASH! This is our second time eating here and I imagine many more in the future! They have a food truck out front but inside the convenience store is where the kitchen is located and where you order. Gotta love the low profile flex! We had the classic Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Biryani, both mild this time. Medium was rough on my belly last time (but no regrets!) Flavors are spot on with authentic Indian spices. If you love Indian food, this place is a must in Reno. Their menu is expansive, their food has been consistently AMAZING and delicious, friendly staff at pickup, inside of a gas station mart. This is one of our favorite spots for takeout in Reno. We are vegetarians and are delighted by all the options they have that are vegetarian and vegan. Our favorites are the Samosas, Paneer butter Curry and Vegetable Biryani (a must try!). Don't let the gas station fool you, it's so worth the try. We had this for Thanksgiving this year as well because we love it so much and most restaurants here for Thanksgiving don't have many vegetarian options. read more

An amazing hidden little gem tucked away in a gas station. You can smell the cumin and the garlic as soon as you walk in...I would suggest ordering ahead since it's a small kitchen and a 1 chef operation. Best Indian food in town. I have tried almost all their dishes and absolutely can tell it's the BEST in town. You must try and you won't regret. They got so many options including vegetarian options. Where have you been all my life!?!? I am forever changed and I have to give a shoutout to Yelp Elite Sherese W for throwing this spot in the radar and shoutout to Yelp Elite Ashley G, my awesome wife for bringing this deliciousness into my life! I've had my fair share of Indian food in Reno and beyond, and the dishes we enjoyed from Clay Oven take the cake as some of the absolute best to cross my lips and enter my tummy. Classic butter chicken and saag paneer were on order, as was garlic naan. While that would've been enough, when there's goat curry on the menu, you must order goat curry too. We also had to try the samosas and the aloo tiki. The butter chicken and saag were exceptional versions of these very popular dishes. What sets these versions apart has to be the depth of flavor they each have thanks to a carefully blended masala, or mix of spices. They were beautifully creamy and rich, packed with protein (chicken or paneer cheese) and just a delight with some basmati rice. The goat curry was a flavor sensation I hadn't experience before. A deep, rich brown sauce coating tender pieces of goat that was slow braised in it for what had to be hours. For once I'm stumped on the spices I was tasting, but each bite was better than the last. Word of caution, the goat is bone in so watch for small pieces while eating. The samosas and aloo tiki were like two dishes each because they both had a chole (chickpea) dish that accompanied them. Unfortunately serving the dish this way made the samosas and the aloo tiki (potato fritters) soggy and I'd prefer these served separately, though I know this is a common chaat many enjoy. All in all this is stellar food everyone should seek out. Best of all, they've found a permanent home in the gas station at this address. Food is made from scratch so give yourself some time. read more

I will preface this with saying that there were some negatives but the food did enough to make me willing to ignore them and give Clay Oven a 5 star review. The only bad things I have to say are that the ordering needs some work (GrubHub and UberEATS both gave me trouble) and it's a small enough operation that I'm not sure how well they will handle foot traffic and call in orders. Be aware that the naan is an exact order number, and to order more if that's your thing. On to all the good stuff! Every one of the entrees was outstanding, and if I hadn't seen him working on them by himself, I'd have thought they had a full kitchen back there. I'm already playing my next order and what else I can try. If you have a big order, please be patient with them, I don't know how many work on the food at all times, but that kitchen is tiny so I can't imagine more than one or two people handling the orders. read more

This place offers extremely flavorful food. It is one of only a very small handful of good Indian food restaurants in the Reno/Sparks area. The food ranges from 4 to 7 depending on the day, 4 being below average and 7 being well above average. When it's a 4 day there is a layer of oil on top of the curry and it's not so enjoyable. On a 7 day it is packed with flavor and is a go-to experience. They use lots of different spices. While they use lots of spices they aren't always well balanced, which can leave it tasting too sour or too salty. One day I got freezer burned chicken.. but I don't blame Clay Oven because I got that same freezer burned chicken from multiple restaurants in the area so it was definitely a supplier issue. The samosas here are unlike anything I've ever had before. If you order anything here order the samosas! Solid 8/10 for me. All in all I'd recommend it. You have an 85% chance of getting well prepared food at this place. read more

It's a bit of an unfair comparison since this is takeout/delivery only, but I was very impressed with Clay Oven. I really loved Royal Indian, until I made the mistake of reading the health department reports (check the Washoe Eats app from Northern Nevada Health). And Bawarchi and Indian Kabab & Curry both served me samosas that were cold in the middle. And it seems most of these restaurants have less than stellar interiors. So Clay Oven doesn't suffer these shortcomings by virtue of not having dine-in, but even ignoring this, the food was outstanding. Highly recommended. read more

I have lived in Southern California, Houston, and the UK (great Indian food). I like spicy food. Clay oven was nuclear. Do yourself a favor: do not order Hot (spicy) unless you want extreeeeme heat. Potatoes were great. Garlic naan was brilliantly flavorful. Before we reheat the Chicken Tikka Masala or Hakka Noodles, we will definitely need to smother them in plain yoghurt to neutralize some of the heat. read more
