An avid runner until I was 50, two hip surgeries necessitated that I change my routine to walking and pool running. For close to 29 years, this worked for me. Approaching 80 has brought about new challenges. Recently I had to go to the foot doctor who took X-rays and told me that I have severe arthritis in my left foot. This explained much about some of the difficulties I have been having with my walking regimen. He explained that more than ever I need to be very careful with my walking shoes and explained the type of support my aging feet would need to get me another 10 years of walking the river. When I went into Marathon Sports, I felt truly welcomed and was lucky to have Nina as my sales person. She is just one of the kindest most patient sales people was ever my good fortune to meet. I have worn these clogs every day for the semester and I was able to stand long hours even while pregnant. They are truly water proof, very comfortable and anti-slip. This year, after orchestrating a rare visit to town from my mother (who has dementia): I thought I would take her there and get her stocked up on Fall socks. Because she has memory issues, she can get a bit confused, so I had to model a pair of socks for her, and had gathered the ones we'd chosen to buy in a pile near the cash register, when suddenly I heard the owner (who I thought knew me as a valued customer) start shouting at us. She called my startled (elegant, fragile) mother "Gross!" and said "Get out of here! You disgust me!" (this was in front of 5 customers, who were also trying on socks and shoes). I informed her that I had intended to buy the socks and that my mother was ill, but she continued shouting and humiliating her and insisting we leave. I told her her behavior was unethical and shocking, and that I would never shop there again. And I would urge any future customers to do the same.

I initially thought it was a clothing or travel store, given the nomad branding, but it's actually a combo of Boston-based everyday and travel accessories and a Japanese stationary store. 4.5 stars rounded up for the stationary, atmosphere, and service. The space itself is airy and sleek, with an island of pens, pencils, and notebooks bordered by well crafted bags, glasses, and reversible slippers that looked so fuzzy, I wanted to touch every one. But really, I was there for the stationary. Japanese stationary is the pinnacle of paper perfection, and Muji is usually my go to. But here, the quality is top notch, reminding me of a miniature Kinokuniya (NYC) or the couple stationary stores I visited in Japan many years ago. Not a vast collection here, but a well-curated one that's hard to get elsewhere in the States. I delighted in all the different pens, pencils, and fountain pens on display. The various notebooks had beautiful paper -- some handmade, some not -- so I was incredibly slow as I marveled and mulled over what to pick. I'm not a planner/journal system person (think Traveler or Midori), but the leather covers and inserts from another brand made me think seriously about changing my journaling practices. In the end, I had to restrain myself. I finally picked out a couple letterpress postcards with a daruma figure on them, a little notebook (one among many other fish designs), and a Pentel touch fine felt tipped pen. I'm an avid journaled and letter writer, and I can't wait to share these goodies with friends and penpals. Prices are a bit higher than your average stationary store, but it looked high quality. Opening a store during the pandemic is tough, and a sleek lifestyle store usually isn't my cup of tea. But the guy on staff was incredibly friendly and open to sharing the background of the store, and the displays drew me right in. They also have covid protocols, like opened doors, air filters, and ample hand sanitizer when handling merchandise (plus trays for placing items for sanitation). I came to ask the girl at the front desk, she said no public restroom (?!) People, I just literally checked out. You can keep the restroom and all the shoes for yourselves. Customer service is a mess here. They used to have some good staffs and lost them. The shoes no long look that good, neither the price. You can get the same thing for much cheaper online or at the brand store. (Eg., Cole Haan for $100 at DSW but only $79.99 on Amazon or $85 at Cole Haan store in Assembly). Bye.
