Man I guess alot of people had better experiences than I did because that dude was a jerkass. Don't know if I walked in on him on a tense day or what because on that day I came in and checked out the "Y" series and he came in my space expecting me to BUY the damn book when I was trying to finish it. I don't care if it is "presentable", "welcoming", or "pleasant", a business should never EXPECT a customer to buy anything. But B&N actually let me finish Y:Vol.1 with no interruptions from a jerk on his high-horse. See, I didn't have to buy the freaking book. I find that I don't really have a LCS, more as I have 2 that make up 1 awesome one. Basically what it comes down to is I use Pulp Fiction in conjunction with Metropolis Comics for all my comic buying needs. Metropolis Comics is where I handle all my "floppie" needs and Pulp Fiction is where I handle all my hardcover and TPB needs. Solely because you're guaranteed at least 20% off cover price. As far as the store is concerned it's ever changing. The guy that runs this place while super helpful, will change the layout of the store on a whim. While it never becomes a problem I've definitely lost count. The store is tidy and nothing is ever out of reach with assorted comics and graphic novels in the front and a row of manga in the back. Selection is diverse but as far as the Big Two is concerned it definitely leans a bit Marvel-centric. I've always felt his DC selection a bit lacking but he more then makes up for it by pretty much ordering everything. I rarely have been here where he didn't have exactly what I was looking for on Wednesday. No matter how obscure I feel the title is. All and all if you're a comic fan this is the place you need to be. You just can't beat the bargain. The prices are more then worth the trek. read more

One of the best comic book stores in the L.A./ Long Beach area, they have everything you need and looking for, if they don't have it on the shelf they take their time and order it for you, this store offers Free pull-list services and with that lots of discounts, which is the best deal, this comic book store has all hard cover books in discount all the time, I believe they ship because they are always wrapping books and comics for shipping, customer service is really good, they are there to help and make conversation. I've been going to this place ever since it was in Lakewood. I really like the owner and the girl who work there, as well as the great selection of graphic novels. However, the young, hipster d-bag who is often behind the counter needs some serious lessons in customer service and humility, as well as an attitude adjustment. I'm not saying he should be kissing mine, or anyone else's behinds, but for someone who works in a comic book store he wreaks privilege. No one should have to put up with this crap when you're spending your money and trying your hardest to support a local business. He's become so bad that some other friends and I decided that life is too short and will stop shopping there. Too bad, because I really like this place. read more

The first time I visited Pulp Fiction I thought the place wasn't for me. There were books everywhere and I thought the place was gonna cave in on me. But I gave the shop a second try, and Pulp Fiction has since become my comic book shop of choice. They get a great selection of new comics every week, and typically have several past months of an issue in stock. If you're into trades then you're gonna love this place. New trades are discounted and you can also find used trades marked done as much as 50%. The back-issue selection is a bit random, but I have to say that is what I love most about Pulp Fiction. There's nothing like digging through boxes of dollar comics and discovering issues that complete runs, contain story lines you've always wanted to read, or just look like fun to read. To make things sweeter, you can earn free dollar comics when you buy a certain number of them. Lastly, the owner and the people working there are friendly and willing to answer questions without being snooty. I was a returning reader after several years away from comics, and the staff at Pulp Fiction were great about catching me up on what was going on. I think any person would be happy with Pulp Fiction being their home shop and pull-list membership is free and you get a discount. See you there! read more

So far my favorite comic book store. I read the comments on here about their customer service and I was a little hesitant at first because customer service is very important to me, it is what will make me want to go back to a store or not. Being fairly new to comics I normally just research online what titles I want, thus avoiding having to open books, skimming through them at the store, or asking a bunch of questions. (Maybe this is partly due to ME being a bit antisocial, and also not wanting to open the books because if there's one thing I hate is having to buy a book with a broken spine). I have been going here for almost a year and have not had a bad experience. The workers there kind of just mind their own business unless you approach them. I have had a couple questions on book locations or about a specific writer and one of the guys there answered me in a polite manner, so again, not a bad experience. I would say just give this place a try. They have the best prices for TPB than any other place in my area and I love that since I mainly buy those. read more

The deals alone are almost too good to be true, and make this place one of the better comic shops around. 30% off Dark Horse/Image? 40% off Marvel/DC/Vertigo? Yes! And in effect 24/7! Broad selection of comics for kids and adults! Place has great lighting too, unlike Amazing Comics down the road. Staff's usually ready to greet you soon as you come through the door, and I don't feel like I'm being talked down to at any point during the transaction. I see complaints here about customers being told to stop handling merchandise, but I have flipped through comics in front of the staff all the time no problem. And I'm not exactly the most refined customer paying with my buttload of loose change, so I imagine the reviewers complaining are unaware just how rough they are treating the books. (I know folks to practically yank the pages when they flip. Yikes!) Only thing they want you to do is keep any backpacks at the front desk while you peruse the store. (Unless you're keeping a body, that's no problem.) This is pretty much a reflex everytime I enter the store now. I walk out having saved several dollars each time! I first met Mike when he had his shop just a few blocks from my house. I was not an avid comic book reader, but my daughter was a fan of several manga series, and Pulp Fiction had an impressive selection, and good prices. Mike, when he wasn't busy, was very gracious and helpful in advising my daughter, as were several of his employees. In speaking with me, he discovered my tastes in things fiction and made several great recommendations, without any pressure, that I purchased. I go there less frequently, now, partly because it is a bit further away, and partly because my daughter has grown up. Oh, and they offer great summer art classes and, if memory serves, they're free! If I have one complaint, it is that their website does not have their store hours on it. I guess I'll have to call them. read more

Terrible customer service. I purchased a comic, walked out and realized it was the wrong one. I came back in to exchange it for the correct one, and the guy behind the counter treated me like I was asking for free comics and made a snide remark. 80% of the store are graphic novels. I come here for the new issues of DC. Other comic book stores that sell out of certain ones i need, i come here and they have them :) They dont really carry much back issues, so i cannot give 5 stars. But overall a good store read more

Staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, especially if you're new to comic book fandom, but they don't obnoxiously breathe down your neck either. It feels like they've perfected the ability to know when you need help, and to just leave you alone to browse in peace. Their selection is pretty great, a lot of indie comics thrown in with the usual Marvel and D.C. And they're more than willing to call around and order up a comic they don't have in store, and try their best to find what you're looking for. read more

After seeing a fellow comic geekian have the lovely cajones to say something about a beloved store, I must follow suit. The last half dozen times I have gritted my teeth and smiled and approved and agreed and basically looked like a push over (which I am farr from mind you) . Mike the owner is a very nice guy, so he is exempt from this entire thing. He at least communicates gently, doesn't pressure you or make you feel like a complete dick. Every other employee their, a chick, and a few dudes, except the 2nd or first oldest employee their, whom I recognized used to work Starbucks, he is a lovely fella as well. Smiles, talks shop, knows what he is saying and common decency doesn't seem to be a lackin feature... Butttttt the lil lady, and 2 other men whom I believed to be employed by the owner, are just such friggin jerks. I understand that it is a store which depends on $$$ to succeed and maintain, but how about letting your customers have a friendly look-over or read of a series they could potentially be interested in. Ya know, if you head to barnes & nobels, a BOOK STORE primarily, they actually ENCOURAGE you to sit and read, and perhaps give other genre's or flavors a try to entice you to hopefuly buy it if you love it and don't wanna put it down. My friend, was starting on the WALKING DEAD series, from the TPB start point Vol 1. YAY! I thought. Finally they are giving it a good ol boy scout try, and I shit.....I SHIT you not, he got to page 4 of the book (about 45 second span of time) and an employee LEANED over the counter-top, tapped them on the shoulder as if about to savor a tasty morsel of triumph over their own work domain, and Said "Ummmm sorry but you aren't allowed to read them" Call me Pinochio and slap me on the wooden ass coz I ain't lying. There is one potential comic book fan who immediately was turned off by the attitude and smugness, and left the store. Didn't even wait for me to purchase my 30 comics in hand...so they lost out on a TPB purchase, and 30+ comics purchase. Mike, take your employee's to a seminar where "Hello", "Thank you"," please enjoy", and "Can I help you or ask what kind of genres you are into/perhaps curious about?" Also "Welcome, & Good Day/Morning/Evening" is actually quite nice to hear from the homo-sapien's known as man & woman. I feel quite harsh and myself a dick. But still, I feel better having vented one tiny example of my many many many visits to this store. It is all worse from here on out. Cheers! read more

I have been a loyal customer since Mike was at the Lakewood store, so it pains me to write this review. I will start off with that I have had nothing but great experiences with Mike. We've had convos about indie comics and mainstream comics in the past, and he is very knowledgeable, but not in that annoying comic-book-guy way. I was such a fan that we always supported the store when we could, and even wrote reviews for it at the cal state long beach newspaper. I can say with confidence that 90% of my graphic novel library was purchased at pulp fiction, which probably equates to thousands of dollars over the years (yikes, that's a lot of comics....what am I doing with my life...) Pulp eventually moved to a bigger location, and we were all happy for Mike, little did we know things were about to change for the worst. Mike started hiring more employees and some were ok, but there is this one girl who is the utter worst. She doesn't even acknowledge you are there, does not help you with any of your choices, and does not try to sell any books besides punching numbers when you are ready to be rung up. It wasn't so bad usually because Mike was there at least. But as the store got more popular, we saw Mike less and less and more of the other employees that are always rude and unhelpful. That brings us today. We wanted to pick up the Fables trade for sure, and I was looking for a cool new non-marvel/dc book to start getting into. I do my round of perusing the whole store, and then zero into the back area with lesser known titles and publishers. I picked up a book called "Bitch Planet" because I'm a sucker for shock titles. I looked over the first page, and started flipping thru the pages looking at the art. And who comes by but that girl that is the WORST and tells me that it's not a library, and we are not allowed to read the comics in the store... This isn't Superman, or Spider-Man, it's a comic called Bitch Planet, which I'm sure not many people have heard of. You know how I know? I told her my conundrum of not knowing about it, hence my need to look thru it and asked her to tell me about it. She didn't know either. She yelled to the guy in the front of the store to yell to me a synopsis. she didn't even stick around to see if I had any other questions, she just walked away while I just stood there aghast at this amazing customer service. I can't even remember what the guy in the front said, I just put the comic down and went to leave the store. This is the part where you think the review should end, but I decide that I have been offended enough that I should leave with a dramatic show of indignation. Ok I will admit, no one likes the guy who does that. But after years of buying my comics there, being accused of trying to read the whole comic while in the store was like a knife in my back. I felt betrayed. So anyhow, before leaving the store, I made sure to tell the girl that she was rude and very unhelpful, and that whenever she is working I alway hear her loudly gossiping and being an overall unpleasant person. (To get you on my side again I earlier I overheard the girl talking to her sister today about how she lost a special needs kid at Universal Studios, and then laughing about how the kid was crying cuz he was lost. The worst am I rite?!) I don't know what I was expecting, a Jerry Maguire moment? I don't know. At any rate, I told them I am a longtime customer, but I don't think I will be coming back. Did they try and make it right? Nope. I just walked out the door angry and confused. And they just said bye. There are 2 things that make me sad about this. One is that I want to support local comic book stores, but now it seems I'll be going digital. The second is that I KNOW the moment I left I'm sure they started talking shit about me and saying how horrible I was, saying things like "honestly! The nerve of that guy!" Maybe I'll give Amazing Comics another shot. Sorry Mike to write this review, but it looks like you are doing well enough even with your awful employees. I love this store so it pains me to say this-the guy who worked Wednesday night 1/21/15 was totally rude and unhelpful. I have been coming here for years and have seen him here before, but tonight, maybe it was slow, he was rude, creepy, and annoying. I first approached him and asked if they carried a variant cover and he said no. Ok. I asked him if it could be special ordered and he said only for their pull customers. Ok, sucks but I get it. Then I went over and there were boxes of comic compilations, spines up, under the very full wall. I figured it was overfill and found a couple that I was interested in. The employee came over and rudely and loudly announced that those books weren't for sale and I needed to put them back. Um what? The boxes were not labeled in any way, and he borderline yelled at me. Embarrassed I quickly put them back how I had found them, my happy comic-searching buzz destroyed. Not 10 seconds later he walked over to the box and made a huge huffing show of "rearranging" the comics. Then he continued to follow me as I worked my way scanning the rest of the shelves. Maybe it was because I was the only girl in the store and I was ruining the order of the comic displays with my eyes. After ordering several things online from Pulp Fiction I decided to visit their Long Beach brick and mortar. Today is my third and likely last time. Each visit has been worse than the one before. The store looks like someone's basement and the staff is unfriendly, unwelcoming and downright rude. This adds to the feeling of being uninvited to someone's basement. They have a restroom but they will send you to the seedy bar at the end of the derelict shopping center they are in. If you choose to buy from them, do yourself a favor and do it online. This place is the poster child for closing one brink and mortars and shopping strictly online. read more

As a woman, I'm usually anxious upon entering a comic book store. Guys who work at most comic book shops look at you sideways, like you've just invaded their secret clubhouse. Not the case at Pulp Fiction! The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable, and when I was asking questions about the latest X-Men & Thor issues, I wasn't treated like a second-class citizen. So my last two visits left me very disappointed about this store. First, I went in to get a new trade and decided to see what back issues they had. I was looking through two boxes up at the front on top of one of their displays. Now these two boxes were in plain view of the clerk who was behind the counter on the computer. I had a tough time looking through the boxes because of some inventory laid on top. I slid the inventory to one box and after looking through that box, I began to slide the inventory over to the other box. As I was doing this I got scolded by the clerk who said not to touch the items on top because of their value... REALLY! NOTE TO STORE: I had spent a good amount of time looking through these boxes... You could see that I was having a tough time because of the items on top. You decide to scold me! You should have offered to move them the minute I started to look through the boxes instead of spending you precious time on the computer. The next time I actually didn't got to the store physically. I called and asked if they had a certain new issue in stock. The clerk answered back that he wasn't sure if they had it and couldn't go look. Not that he said he was busy or anything, just that he wasn't going to. His suggestion for me... to come in to the store and see if they had it. read more

Pulp Fiction is an excellent comic book store. Mike carries a great selection, including more manga and more independent comics than other, much bigger stores. The store is clean and well-organized and is a place where you can feel comfortable hanging out. Literacy is a top priority at the store, and Mike works with local libraries and schools to include comic books in reading programs. There are also a lot of art classes and events at the store. Furthermore, Mike does a great job of carrying kid-friendly comics as well. The store is also my top choice of local comic book stores (and bookstores) for a good selection of graphic novels and trades. There is also now a manga specialist on board and a manga book club that meets every week. If that wasn't enough, there are now anime dvd rentals as well! (and Pocky and Ramune!) The new manga trading post is also a great deal, you can bring trade in your old manga and get something new. Whether you're a superhero fan, manga fan, anime fan, a teacher, a librarian, or just want to try something new, I encourage you to check it out. read more

I have very conflicting feelings about this place...Been coming here since high school, they have a great selection of old school mainstream trade paperbacks, and new indie comics. I think it's the last place where I live that carried Optic Nerve. They have a great rental program and all trade paperbacks are 20% off cover price, which is worth the drive out here. Recently though, there has been a large increase in manga. Keep your One Piece and Naruto at Borders, please, the adults are trying to read. My biggest complaint about this place is that the guy who owns the store is an utter douche bag. You'd think being 40, bald, and overweight and the fact that he's working in a declining industry would make a guy more modest. read more

Been awhile since I bought a comic. This place had what I wanted which is good. But if I was getting back into comics I wouldn't make this a regular stop. When you shop you want to have a pleasant experience when spending your money in an establishment. The counter person was strained to be pleasant. I recently moved my comics from the east to the west coast and for a while I was dealing with comic book stores for supplies. The owner works out of their other location now and he wasn't bad to deal with. The older guy with glasses is ok once you get to talking to him. More recently I went in once or twice - I noticed a weirdly smug vibe from the male employees, which I attributed to the symbiotic and insecure relationship between nerd store employees and nerd customers. Underground music record stores offer a parallel but similar dynamic. The second time a guy who looked like Milhouse Van Houten, especially in the tummy, lorded over the register and the people around him in a cold, condescending manner. I asked about comic bags and he answered with bored indifference. I then asked him "What do you get for 100 bags?", which where I come from means how much do you charge. With a look of angry disgust he spits back at me "How much do I get?" with the "I" loud and sarcastic. He then repeated himself, paused a moment, and gave me the price. No, I wasn't asking him how much of the $6.50 or so the bags cost went into his pocket at the end of the day. I didn't buy the bags, walked out quickly and somehow resisted starting something I would have enjoyed greatly. I'll never go back and don't have a need to, but wow was that a bad experience and a microcosm of a subculture that doesn't realize they have no special powers on the street. For weekly books and graphic novels (their main selection) there's no reason not to go there if the dynamics of immature comic book stores are for you. On a personality level I'd also avoid Metropolis Comics in Bellflower. If you're a civilian in LB looking for something for your kids or something try Amazing Comics & Cards. The women who work at Comics Unlimited in HB were very nice. The best store I dealt with was Geoffrey's Comics in Gardena. Ed is great and they have an outstanding selection of older comics. I've been to other comic book stores in the past and they all have some type of decor or make it loud and proud that they have cool "geek" paraphernalia but this place always looks like a storage facility or a Borders right before they closed down. I felt ridiculous writing a review for Pulp Fiction because it's so good and didn't think I could say anything that hadn't been said blah blah blah. I just saw some negative reviews here and I am shocked! This is a great comic book store for graphic novels and trade paperbacks. They have amazing deals! The place is clean, air-conditioned, and organized well. Yes, customer service is non existent here. Yes, there are employees who seem unhappy and constantly packing boxes. But sometimes I am fine with that. If there is a popular graphic novel (especially from a big publisher) you have been wanting to buy but hesitant to spend the money, go here! It is in a strip mall so no problem finding parking. It is closed on Tuesdays. read more
