Horrible experience last night.... April 24th. My 78th birthday. Dined with son and my wife. Ordered tilapia.....with no lettuce as I have serious (and immediate) reaction to lettuce. Order came with lettuce on half the plate. Sent it back. Son finished his dinner. Wife was just about done. Still no fish. I asked waitress to see the manager. Some time later....after son and wife finished....my plate was served. No manager ever appeared. No discount....and I paid the full amount. I will not go back. My company hosts office parties there....but that won't happen again either because this restaurant just blew me off. This 78 year old man does not need this because there are many other Mexican restaurants in Muncie and surrounding areas. I recommend you avoid Puerta V. on Wheeling. read more

Stopped into this newly enlarged redecorated restaurant for lunch (actually this is the 4th time I have stopped in since it reopened-but I didn't have time to review). This restaurant location and any of their several Muncie locations have always been a joy. Ambiance and cleanliness have been perfect! Food is fresh hot and you can order it the way you wish -- today I wished for a simple plate of whole beans & Mexican rice. Wish granted! The waiter didn't flinch when asked for something not listed on the menu but smiled and said sure we 'we can do that'! Have been a patron of this chain for more years than Yelp has been around and when we crave Mexican food this chain sets the standard! Cant leave a review without mentioning the flan. Normally great place, but today not so much because of our server Juanito. He rushed us to order and complained when we asked for an extra minutes to look at the menu. Then, when we had to place the order, he did not ask for meat preferences, tortilla preference, causing our whole table to get not what they wanted. Then, after we received our food, he quickly asked if we need anything, and as we were about to answer we needed something, he said you're good and walked away. When we finally got him to come back over (5 minutes later) someone asked for clarification, was immediately told "uh this ain't no Taco Bell." I think 3.5 stars is accurate for this establishment. Very mid tier Americanized Mexican food. Even though it was incredibly busy, we were able to get a table immediately and the food came out quickly. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they serve soda water here. I ordered one with lime, and it was super refreshing. I did enjoy the enchiladas the most, but the cheese dip was a little cold and the tamale wasn't super flavorful. Came for a late dinner and decided to give this place a try. Large parking lot afforded plenty of space. It was not busy but took a while to finally be seated. Service was fine and atmosphere was typical. Chips and salsa- chips were fresh. Salsa did not have much flavor other than being spicier than typical restaurant salsas. Burrito California- generous portion size. But completely flavorless. Chicken and steak were cooked well, veggies inside were sautéed nicely. But the whole thing did not have any flavor... cheese sauce and red sauce on top included. Arroz con pollo- contrary to the burrito, this portion size greatly lacked. I came here upon the invitation of a friend for dinner. We were seated immediately. Chips & salsa were placed in front of us while we perused the huge menu. I finally decided on the taco salad while my friend ordered the burrito special. The chips were fresh but the salsa was the consistency of tomato sauce. I think salsa should have chunks of onion, tomato & peppers with a little cilantro thrown in for good flavor. Our food arrived quickly & we both enjoyed it. I wouldn't doubt the importance of Puerto Vallarta as a Muncie staple, but from the vantage point of an outsider looking in, it's just nothing special and doesn't stand out at all from the ubiquitous lackluster Mexican restaurants of Central Indiana. We've been in several times for lunch since it's a convenient meeting place for a meal with our family from the Winchester area. It's this rather than the food that brings us back. I haven't had anything spectacular; this recent visit I tried the huevos con chorizo and it was just alright, not too spicy so not too much flavor. Rice and beans were okay. Usually at these places at least I find that the salsa is good, but not here...honestly it's probably what put it down to 2 stars instead of 3. I never, ever say this about salsa, but theirs is just bad. It is in DESPERATE need of onion, and also doesn't have any cilantro in it, just seems like tomato and some spice (but not enough to make it flavorful). I'm sure we'll be back again since the food is decent enough and convenient, but next time I'll probably try something else and do without filling up on chips and salsa. read more

Came here after looking at Yelp reviews. I was NOT disappointed! This is the real deal Mexican place! Lots of Hispanics enjoying the atmosphere, food and drink helps to edify it's authenticity! I had the chicken "chimi". It was crispy and the chicken was really flavorful, not just chicken out of a can! The rice and beans were great! The chips and salsa were great, the cheese dip was great and the margaritas were great! I sat at the bar on the cool retro stools. I'll be going back when I'm there in a week! read more

Use to be good. Now it's full of grease! I have ordered the fajita's. And I turned my plate a little bit and had to drain the grease out of it. Even then when you ate it all you could taste was grease! So I ordered the chicken taco salad and even then the shell was very soggy by the time I received it. Great lunch specials 7-days a week! Kid's menu options. Appetizers, salads, combo meals, fajita selection. Alcoholic beverages and Coke products. The food: So good! Free chips & homemade salsa for all customers - generous with refills and offered each person their own salsa cup. I had the Steak Fajita Salad, which was also a lunch special that ran around $7.50 and was huge! The steak was tender and the salad was rich with fajita toppings, lettuce, cheese and sour cream. The others in my party got the Chicken Chimichangas, also a lunch special. While these aren't the biggest chimis I've seen they come on a huge platter with rice, beans, toppins, guacamole and sour cream. Lastly, all the dishes were covered in this delicious cheese sauce - I'm not sure what this is called but it must be some sort of signature for them and as a toppings-sort-of-gal, I loved it! The atmosphere: Definitely authentic. Colorful, vibrant, lots of seating. Wood-craved booth seating and table and chair seating. Bar area. Clean. The service: Exceptional. Our server checked on us several times before the meal, during and after. In Muncie, we the think the Wheeling Ave Puerto Vallarta offers the best service. Every time we visit, and we dine there often, the staff go out of their way to make us feel welcome. We have come to know several of the waiters, bussers, and hostesses, which makes dining here more enjoyable. However, we feel the food at the Tillotson Ave location is superior-- especially the tacos. At the Tillotson location, the tacos taste juicier & more fresh. I have been going to Puerto Vallarta for years. Living in Muncie, it was a given, especially when I was in high school and we went after football games (great for large groups). Once I moved though, nothing else compared. Visiting Puerto when I come back home is the biggest treat! Especially this location. I think it's the brightest inside and for the most part has friendly servers. I'm not sure when they remodeled, but when I went recently the tables and chairs were brand new and made the place look cohesive. The food is the kind of Mexican food that, yes is Americanized but they still keep it authentic with flavor and ingredients. I love the chimichanga and the taco salad. There menu is a tad large but isn't daunting to go through if you've never been. Margarita on the expensive side. Not bad for the Midwest though. Overall, hot food and delicious. Booths are tall enough for privacy. Price is reasonable! read more

We had several people recommend this place for lunch. 2 steak tacos - meat was burnt .. and when I asked for Verde Sauce - waitress had no idea what I wanted - brought me green habanero sauce in a bottle .. we waited for someone else to pass and asked them for some salsa verde ?! 5 mins later brought some watered cucumber & pepper soup ? The parking lot was packed and many of the tables were filled but I was surprised at how much seating they had there. I had been hesitant to go in because the parking lot was so full and I was thinking we'd have a long wait but we were immediately seated. I ordered the volcano. I ended up having lots to take home. It was very flavorful and not overwhelmingly spicy. I do like spicy food, though. They had jumbo, top shelf, pineapple margaritas on special, so we took advantage of that. They were strong and had a great sweet tart flavor. Normally priced, I don't think I would have bought them but a good deal when they're on special. The service was good and our waitress was attentive. It is pretty loud in there but it's a good happy vibe. I would go back again when I'm in Muncie. The salsa was so so. Coming from Chicago I have had my fair share of excellent Mexican restaurants. I was leary when some of my new college friends and Muncie locals took me to Puerta for the first time. However, I was thoroughly pleased. The steak quesadilla is fantastic, and the cheese in it is great. I'm not normally a fan of this style of quesadilla, but this was good. I'm a very picky eater as it is, and the combo of steak, cheese, mushrooms, onions and green peppers was absolutely mouth watering. The rice isn't bad either--I usually base my liking for Mexican restaurants on their rice, and Puerta definitely fits the bill. It's a great place to go with a group of friends, and if you're on campus, keep a look out in the coupon booklets because sometimes they offer deals. Overall, a great place to eat some good ethnic cuisine! read more

Absolutely the worst "Mexican" food I have ever had. I was used to authentic Mexican food, came here expecting nothing near that level, and was still sadly disappointed. I ordered a tamale and two steak tacos. The tamale wasn't in the corn husk, and was covered in a bland, ragu meat sauce with ground beef. Disgusting. The "tacos" I received were LITERALLY, 110% SERIOUS, chopped steak in a tortilla. That's it. No lettuce, no onion, no cilantro, no tomato, no sour cream. Steak. Tortilla. Wtf? They were $3 a peice, I expect at least some freakin lettuce. You won't catch me there again, even if you paid me back for my meal. I am so furious about it that I wrote my very first review. Screw you guys, I am a Polish guy, and I can make better Mexican food than you. read more
