Turns out one of the guys behind the bar is a California regular when he travels and turns out knows many of the same people I know. Crazy. He's also one of the more well known wine distributors in the area so he does know everyone in the restaurant scene. Since I had no need for a CA wine I was offered a very good Barbaresco and some great conversation to mark my last day in town for a while. Great energy, drinks and people.

We enjoyed chatting with the bartender who recommended our next stop to us - Akkurat (amazing selection of on tap beer/pub). We had so much fun here we dropped over 400 bucks I feel in American Dollars. One drink we had was the gonzo. The bar manager who was there that day ( my visit was in February 2017) had recently won a Bacardi cocktail competition for Sweden and was be going on to the international competition and if she won, the gonzo would win some notoriety [think same status of staples like rum and coke, vodka tonic, etc etc, along those lines.] The club also sold a few finger foods which I don't recall too much but I do remember them being tasty. All in all pretty pricey bar in a nice area near Gamla Stan. If you need advice on visiting Sweden, go in the springtime or warmer weather as it is an country of several islands and best explored from the water.

I tried all their IPAs and they were all good. Nothing like the Best West or East Coast beers in the US, but all were local (or European), and I appreciated the efforts to offer local Swedish IPAs. I was there before dinner, so ordered just an appetizer. I had the been tartare, and it was terrific. They provides all the ingredients (raw eggs, onions, capers, etc.), and the beer was very fresh. I appreciated they allowed us to carve out one person's order from the rest of us (he did not drink) and then we could split the bill easily with the server's help.

This could be the perfect spot to get together and have a semi-live sport experience along with some great food. Gaston is the 2nd wine bar in the Frantzén empire (the first one is in the Old Town (Gamla Stan)…read morenext to the same owners gastro pub the Flying Elk, cocktail bar Corner Clu and around the corner from the fine dining Frantzén restaurant) and this one located inside department store NK. It is part of the increased ambitions of NK when it comes to its food and beverage offering. The wine bar is on the top floor of the department store and so far it is often a very relaxed and calm place. The space is considerable bigger than the original Gaston which is nice for larger groups but it does also lack some of the charm of the smaller Gaston. I do still like it though as it is easy to just pop in for a glass without having to worry if there is space. The selection here is a bit smaller than in the original Gaston but it is still good for a wine bar. Usually around 10 wines by the glass and they also offer the nice sommelier's choice where the sommelier will select 3 wines and give you smaller tasters (approximately 1/3 to 1/2 glass) for 120 SEK. Great fun to be able to taste a lot of different wines and also try things one otherwise would not go for. I would prefer a better selection of champagne by the glass, it has lately been the good but boring Charles Heidseck and I would rather see some of the more exciting champagnes on the list. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and really interested in wine so always fun to chat a bit with them. As it is often rather calm here they do also have time to chat longer. It is also possible to order food from the other restaurants on the same floor and eat it at the tables at Gaston. One major drawback is however the limited opening hours - they cannot be open later than the department store so not open after 20.00 on weekdays and only until 18.00 on Saturdays.
