Review for the hotel accommodations. When you visit Sturbridge, you know antiquity will be part of the theme. Olde buildings, historical relics, period clothing- all the stuff of retro-tourism. And when you stay at a place called the Public House, you know the theme will be continued ling after the time at the Sturbridge Villiage is spent. It's an after-hours continuation of your historical proclivities, and for many, a welcome extension. The main house smells like fireplace, has wonderful construction materials, lead windows, exposed beams- you are staying in an important place that echoes with hundreds of years of conversations and ales. However, book through hotels.com, and your 1750 time warp lands you oddly in 1980. No main inn to be found; rather, you pioneer your wagon to the remotest of the motel complex where nary 2 other weary travelers have been sequestered, and in this desolation you unlock your door to Nancy Reagan, the Bee Gees, and ET. 1980 greets you with mismatched antique-ish furnature, tiled bathtubs, and plug-in electronic clock radios. Curtains look like wallpaper from Williamsburg- replete with pioneer hunting scenes- and carpeting is an odd green color. See, subjecting yourself to a historical setting has backfired, and though antiquey, it isn't anything other than a mishmash of castaway artifacts, seeking a home in the farthest of corners of the Public House complex. And this is your dilemma...you wanted this, and this you have received. Women in their 49's in 1980 would have swooned into the arms of their lovers, to be surrounded by such immersion early Americana! To be concise, the furthest block of rooms is a woefully outdated historical remnant that refuses to modernize. To the credit or historical preservationalists, it is clean, perfectly functional, and has good water pressure and comfortable mattresses and pillows. The AC may be a little noisey- possibly in an attempt to drown out semi-trucks on the nearby highway, rolling over the rumble strips along the white line- but it blows cold, and the room doesn't have odors. It is like the frilled tuxedo with bellbottom paints in your grandfathers closet; still functional and clean, but slightly outdated. And this is the conundrum when staying in a historical hotel: you asked for it. We did have a good night at the Public House, and the delicious breakfast of baked goods in the Bakery the next morning was appreciated. Coffee cake and coffee were a good combination before taking ye olde family back on the road! read more

We came to try hasty pudding, which is no longer on the menu. We started with pierogies and the crab Mac. Could not find a crab, but the mac and cheese was good (best item of the night). The pierogies were dry and difficult to cut through; we tried but did not finish. The shrimp risotto was very bland. The pot roast seemed like shaped meat and was very dry, as well as bland. This is not a good example of fine dining; it felt very saltless and flavorless. There is a reason why there aren't many good reviews for this restaurant. I would not recommend. read more

Met friends for a brunch. The brunch had a lot of variety: lamb, ham, salmon, turkey and prime rib. Then there were lots of sides. Along with dessert table. The food was hot and everything tasted good. With as many people there for the Holiday, the wait staff did an amazing job keeping things flowing. Mr. Bunny also made several appearances throughout. What a phenomenal place. The In is well maintained and extremely quaint and cute. The Inn provides complimentary coffee. Tea and danishes. It is a really nice way to start the morning. In addition the facility has a gym which is small. It has a treadmill, elliptical, bike, row machine and a bench with dumbbells. The gym is adequate enough to get a decent workout in. They also have Ebenezer Tavern which is excellent for food and drinks. For lunch we had the chicken pot pie which was absolutely delicious and the burger which was really good. read more

After a day at old Sturbridge village we stopped for lunch at the publick house. I opted for the 1/2 chicken with roasted brussels sprouts and a side caesar salad. In general I wasn't a fan. The skin on the chicken was rubbery, and the salad extremely over dressed. read more

A group of friends visited this establishment after doing some Sturbridge village strolling. We were told we did not have a reservation and were told the tavern below might have tables. The place was very nice although I believe they need linens on those old tables or varnish them. Hostess was on the snobby side even with myself. Waiter was outstanding and food was very good! I had the Chicken pot pie. It was just as many pictures show. Everyone's food was excellent and the place got packed at 6pm. Call ahead and make reservations, you'll be glad you did! Came for an early celebration with my uncle the day before Thanksgiving. In all honesty, I haven't been to the Publick House in probably 20 years. It was exactly the same look-wise, but that's okay! It's a cozy and neat property. The food isn't fancy but it's solid and decently priced. I had the pot pie which was excellent and a huge portion. Our evening started with our table not being ready at our reservation time; then the waiter attempted to rush us ordering. Asked for water and one glass was brought for a table of 6. Meatloaf was grey and dry. Turkey was dry and tasteless; smothered in salty gravy. Had a hard time telling the difference between the stuffing and dark meat - both had the same consistency. Potatoes had no taste. All the food was sort-of tossed together and had no presentation value. Asked for water again for the table; one more glass showed up. After multiple requests we made it to 4 of the 6 of us with water. Waiter asked us if we were interested in dessert; he brought one menu for the table, then was frustrated when it took us so long to order since we had to pass it around. His excuse: "I thought only one of you wanted dessert!" Time to pay the bill. With three couples, we asked to split it between three credit cards. When the paperwork arrived, we determined he charged one card twice, one card once, and the last was not charged at all. The response: "I have no idea how that happened!" Yet this young man likely supports a family and we felt obligated to leave him a 20%+ tip. Simply put, this is likely our last visit to this establishment - it felt overpriced for the quality and the service was inexcusable. read more

Rooms were amazing! However, watch your belongings! My whole bag was stolen with my iPad in it and they will do nothing about it! This is quite the hotel that dates back to the 18th century. I loved the cocktails and the food was excellent. Our party of eleven had the quiches, salads and crab ac and cheese. We stayed a second time in a new room. The shower head sprayed a light mist of water instead of a consistent stream, and still smelled weird like the room in the other building. The shower curtain wouldn't stop sticking to my skin and had a weird residue and discoloration like it hadn't been washed. It kept lifting off the edge of the bathtub and sticking to my skin. I kept hearing random knocks and clicks from the air unit and TV that were jarring and woke me up several times. There were stray pieces of hair (different lengths) all over the floors and on the shower walls, as well as scraps of paper or dirt, and God only knows what this is that I got a picture of from the bathroom floor. They couldn't even be bothered to replace the used toilet paper roll. I don't trust that the towels have been replaced since the last guest and the little box of hand soap looked bent and rough at the edges like it was used previously and put back in the box. This second room had a microwave and mini fridge which the first room did not. The air unit in the first room was able to be kept on all night, but the unit in the second room was on an automatic cycle. When we arrived for our dinner reservations we needed directions to the tap room restaurant, because there are a million signs that say "dining hall" but do not clarify whether that is an event space or restaurant, and ended up being directed to walk straight through some wedding party's event in one of the buildings. There are no elevators or ramps in the building so it is not accessible. Chrissy in the tap room restaurant was a delight and our food was delicious. She was the highlight of our stay. Would not stay here again. read more

Have tried time and again to give the restaurant a chance. I've been served a raw/partially frozen burger for my toddler, green roast beef to my stepdad, and a salad that I ordered with grilled chicken, served with cold disgusting poached chicken - 3 strips for $7, besides the $8 for the salad. I'm assuming they make enough as a wedding venue that no one cares about the overpriced pub fare. This has been over 10 years - 3 strikes = out. read more

Wonderful lunch spot between Boston and Stockbridge when driving along the mass Turnpike. Nice lunch and a beautiful bake shop if you're supposed to bring a dessert. Today we tried the open face turkey sandwich. It included both white and dark meat, stuffing, served on cornbread with gravy. It was accompanied by whole cranberry sauce and French fries. My partner had the grilled caprese and tomato sandwich with a small side salad. Our waitress Sara was great. Attentive, refilling our drinks and checking in without hovering. I love the ambiance and decor. Even the seating is nice after a long day of walking. We have comfy chairs with pillows for our backs! We had a hard time choosing, so since it's still considered lunch time, but late in the day, we decided to try a few things to share. Our server, Lillian ask us if we want a bread basket...of course we said "yes, please" but we had no idea it would have STICKY BUNS!!! Yes, it also had cornbread and dinner rolls, but sticky buns We ordered the appetizer of fried potato and onion pierogi with bacon onion jam and sour cream (we got a little excited and already ate some before I took picture, but there were 5). They were really delicious and not too strong of a flavor of anything. I personally prefer steamed usually over fried, but I knew these were fried and they were perfectly cooked and not at all greasy. My husband wanted to try the appetizer of Crab Macaroni Gratin. I didn't really think it has much flavor and didn't encounter any crab meat, but I didn't have much. He thought it had the right amount of cheese and flavor was good and he eventually found some crab, but they were small and few. We also split the Arugula Salad. Let me explain that I wanted everything else in the salad, but don't like arugula. Lillian was kind enough to let me switch to romaine and the entire salad was wonderful! They have a very nice selection of local draft beers that my husband enjoyed a couple of. We will be getting some dessert to go from the bake shop since we are stuffed! read more

In the Sturbridge area, this restaurant is a true gem. Excellent food from their bread basket even including corn bread and cinnamon buns, to their bakery which is amazing (eclair was fantastic!). I tried the fish tacos and hadn't expected the fish to be fried but it was ok and everything was super fresh. It's a rustic, quaint, antiqued environment with lots of history. Biggest critique though is the parking is kind of confusing. If you park and enter from one side of the building you have a bit of a walk to get to other parts of the building, because within the building there is the restaurant, banquet area, taproom, and bakery-- much bigger than expected. Would be helpful for the handicapped parking to be closer to the downstairs restaurant entrance, or signage to help you know to go the back. But I'd definitely return as it's a great place! read more

This hotel is endlessly charming. Set in a beautiful little New England town I felt warm and welcoming from the moment I walked in. We stayed in the old historical inn, and every staff member we talked to was kind and helpful. Our room was bigger than I expected from such an old building and the bed was very comfortable .The entire property was well kept and clean. The bakery is adorable and my wife and I both enjoyed our complementary pastry in the morning. Two downsides to note: the compressor fans right outside our windows (maybe attached to the kitchen?) were incredibly loud and made it hard to fall asleep. Also there are stairs everywhere, including in the middle of hallways, and even floors that weren't attached to stairs could be deceptively uneven. This wasn't a huge problem for us, but if you have any unsteadiness or mobility issues or big luggage, you might not want to stay in the main historic inn building. That said, we found this place to be a good fit for a short stay and a tight budget. We would be happy to stay here again sometimes. read more
