I realized I haven't updated my review for Mack's Catering in 7 years and meanwhile we've been coming here pretty regularly for the last year!!! Ambiance -3 stars, nothing fancy here...a pretty big U shaped bar and a bunch of tables, keno, but it's clean! Service- 5 stars, we've always had excellent service. Drink menu- 5 stars, full bar with plenty of choices ( there wasn't a bar on my first review) Beer menu- 2 stars, my husband said anyone who loves IPA's might give more stars. Food- 5 stars, the food is very good and they honestly have the best clam chowder (still) that I've ever tasted! So we've been coming here often in the last year (or their food truck), so I'll give them 4 stars instead of the 3 that would be the average for the stars. Please add some more craft beers that aren't IPA's!! read more

I ordered food from Mack's for the first time in over 10 years. Once I saw them reopen after the fire I figured I'd try them again. I ordered take out. I ordered my food, got home and realized they forgot a couple things. No biggie, went back and they apologized. What I didn't know right away was that they double charged me. The next day I sent a message and was told they'd investigate it. Ok, great. Days went by and nothing. I sent another message and nothing. I'll say the food is good (reason for the two stars) we'll never go back again though especially if they can't even give me my money back from over charging me. Apparently this has happened to a few people I know as well. So, if you eat here, make sure you check your prices!! Unfortunately the receipt doesn't show each price of your food. This was well worth the hour long trip to get here. We took a day off from things just to do stuff for ourselves. The food was out of this world as you can see from the pictures I have not had such a really great buffet in a very, very long time. It was very quiet. It was only a few tables seated, but I'm assuming it's because we came at the end of the buffet which ended at 12 but the girls it says so long as we was seated at quarter of then it wouldn't be any issue about getting food. End up having two plates of food but they had this incredible fresh corned beef hash and we drove the hour for me to have the homemade sausage gravy with biscuits, which was perfect. Absolutely the best I've ever had. Can't wait to come back again. Next time, maybe I can get a group together that I ride with to come for the buffet because I think it would be definitely worth the hour trip from home to get here. It's just literally a stone throw over the line in Thompson Connecticut. Everyone was wonderful our server rayne was out of this world. She really is personable friendly, and right on top of your coffee, beverages, etc. always taking the plates away. All the other girls have been fantastic. I think this has to be what I called the hidden gem restaurant they do not have these buffets often effect. The next one will be the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving. I'm excited to see what they have on that buffet as well. I'm sure it'll be just as wonderful as this one is. But as always, this depends on whether or not I work in my bed-and-breakfast, so they can get here in time. Look them up it's worth the trip. read more

While visiting the area I had heard good thing about this little location. The food was decent and service was okay, our waitress was very nice but didn't seem well versed on the menu. The restaurant is beautiful, small and comfortable with art and a decent size bar area in the middle. The special drink and dessert menu was located on the chalk wall in the back. I chose a margarita off the regular menu, it was very good and came in a cute glass. We both started with the Manhattan clam chowder and that was delicious. I'd have a bowl of that again! My mother ordered the fried clams and scallops. The scallops were quarter sized and melted in my mouth. I've never eaten a scallop, this was my first time so I have nothing to compare to and thought it was delicious . The clams I did not try but my mother reported they were okay. The unappealing part of the meal was the frozen French fries. They aren't even the good frozen French fries, it was a let down to be honest. I had the haddock tacos and they were delicious. I tried both of the sauce offerings and the mango salsa was a perfect pairing. I ordered the sweet potato fries for $3 up-charge and they were also of the frozen variety. When my order came out they forgot or messed up so I got the pile of frozen French fries anyways. She later brought the sweet potato fries. The coleslaw I hear is homemade and my mom raves about it. I am not a fan of slaw in general so I cannot judge that one either. The heaping pile of frozen French fries does not pair well with the other delicious items on the menu. This place has promise but honestly needs to kick up the menu another level, those fries really killed it for me, I would have preferred McDonald's fries over these. read more

Seems like most of the Yelp reviews are on the old side. I have always enjoyed the effort that Mack put into their offerings over the past years but have to report some concerns recently. This will always be a great place for fish and chips, fried, any kind of fish. But tonight, there was an issue with one of the customers repeatedly swearing loudly (including the f bomb) that frankly upset the entire restaurant, making date night an upsetting experience. It took more than one request before the wait staff did anything about soeakin with the obnoxious customer. We also had to have one of our meals sent back. It was overcooked. read more

mack's provided the food for my wedding as well as providing the bar/cake cutting service. not only was it a big hit with the crowd (so much so that we had very little left over) but the staff that evening knocked it out of the park by being extremely accommodating, kind, courteous, quick on their feet, and saved the day when they found some tablecloths after the rental company screwed me. awesome work that made our wedding stress-free and painless. thank you all so much to the staff at mack's, especially jaime who was very patient with the whole rigamarole in the months leading up to the event. read more

Tonight was our first time trying Mack's. As takeout of course. The girls at the counter were extremely professional and so friendly even with the restaurant being so busy. Now we're home eating our food. The wife has the stuffed fish and I have the 16oz ribeye on special. I'm not kidding that this is THE BEST STEAK I've ever had. I'm a huge steak guy, I've had it all over. This takes the cake. And my wife's fish is outstanding. 10/10 for Mack's. Next time we'll eat in house and enjoy it even more. This will be my second 5 star rating after all my years on Yelp. I heard about Mack's from a friend making a post on Facebook. I live for good prime rib.....after seeing some pics I decided to give them a try. No handicap entrance as I could see. My son is in a wheelchair. Waitress took our drink order ok. Then our meal order. It was 50 minutes, and we still did not get our meal yet. The waitress got to eat some chowder at the end of the bar though. WE ordered 16 oz rib eye and prime rib sandwich. I asked waitress for steak sauce w/the meal and told her we would be getting an order to go. Chowder and fish and chips. Take out order came out to the front and boxed, and we didn't even get our meal yet. We told waitress we woud wait 5 more minutes and then leave. A big burly man came steaming out of the kitchen Stating, " It takes at least 20 minutes to cook a 16 oz rib eye DUDE!" I am a white haired 65-year-old women with a 4 ft 3 man in a wheelchair. We absolutely love their prime rib, the seasonings are perfect. The burger was huge. We also recommend the food truck, we had their BBQ mac n cheese at an event the previous weekend and I had enough to snack on for light lunches twice later. As locals know, seating is limited, so plan accordingly. Had a last minute party for about 40 people and was worried about finding a caterer. Contacted Mack's about their By The Pan options for a party that was only twenty days away and they replied that it would be no problem. The selection of food is quite large so you should be able to find items to please just about anyone and everything we had was excellent. We ordered salad, Italian green beans, vegetable medley, mashed potatoes, steak tips, pulled pork, sausage with onions, peppers and mushrooms, chicken & broccoli alfredo and added a cookie and a brownie platter. While everything was very good, the Italian green beans, steak tips and pulled pork had the most comments from guests. Lots of people were asking where the food had come from. Everything was delivered right on time and nice and hot. The delivery people were courteous helped put everything where it needed to be while offering suggestions and warnings about steam when opening the covers. I have already recommended Mack's to others and would not hesitate to use them again in the future. I look forward to trying some of their other menu items. read more

This little Hole in the wall restaurant has excellent food! The food is worth the drive over here. I took away one star because it took 30 minutes to get out of there once we were done devouring our delicious meal and that is after I chased down our server twice.My Lovely wife ordered the half pound Burger and I ordered the Barbecue combo plate that came with ribs, brisket and pulled pork! Both were huge portions and delicious. I was Born in Texas and I know good Barbecue when I devour it. This place has excellent food for the area. They are only open Thursday for dinner and Friday for lunch and dinner. They are also a catering service as it states in the name. Best prime rib for the price ($16 queen $20 king) within 25 miles at least. Their sandwiches are great, they have great French fries, great fried food all around, everything is very very good. The only problem is they don't know how to turnover tables quickly... which is surprising since you'd think they have some things ready as a catering service. Either way you MUST try Mack's catering! Visited the Taylor brook winery, which was a lovely spot. Saw a food truck from Macks catering and wanted everything on that menu. But the hubby talked me down to two sandwiches. We had the delicious pulled pork and the best meatball sub I've ever had !!! I had to get another meatball sandwich Togo. I received a call from Mack himself 2 hours before I was expecting 70 people at my home for a party. He was so rude and unprofessional. He accused me of not answering emails or my phone which is not true. He basically told me he wasn't coming with my order because he didn't receive a payment deposit. I was so taken back and flustered and angry! His employee who I had communicated with via text, voice and email last contacted me with an email on July 4th saying I can choose to pay with credit card or in full with a check the day of delivery, which I chose to do. Again, Mack called angry and accusatory. He said I better start ordering pizzas! I will never use them for anything again. If that is the way he treats his customers then he should be ashamed of himself. He needs to properly train his employees and NOT blame and punish his customers! read more

My brother in-law took us out for dinner tonight to Mack's Catering. I have to say I was skeptical when we arrived and seeing the small place. He and my sister had the brisket sandwich and I had the clam strips. Our kids had chicken fingers like every where we go lol. We also had a bowl of clam chowder. It was the best clam chowder I have had in a while. The Brisket sandwich was huge and delicious. The strips were great and the portions size are very generous. The girls couldn't finish their individual 3 piece chicken fingers meals the pieces were big. I wish I would have taken a picture! I was too hungry and the food was great. I am quite surprised not to see other reviews of Mack's Catering on yelp, because my newly wedded wife had selected Mack's to provide the catering for our wedding and the reviews are all great on the website. Because of that, I was certainly on board with using them for our reception. Over 100 people were all very impressed with the food as was my new wife and I. Everyone kept asking who the catering service was. We had broiled chicken, deliciously seasoned and fall-off-the bone juiciness! The pulled pork was moist and full of flavor! The sausage and peppers were a big hit. Steak tips and rice was very tender and juicy. The rice was of a perfect texture and tasted great. The mac and cheese disappeared first! And the salads, we had Antipasto which was as fresh as you can get and the proportion of ingredients was well balanced. The pasta salad was delicious. And the deli platters were perfect! EVERYTHING...was delicious! In closing, this was one of those times when making a choice based on reviews alone paid off like a lottery jackpot! Long drive into Connecticut, but worth trying at least once. Portions were middle of the road but good. I tried steamers and clam fritters. Steamers were quite good. Beers were a bit high, but think it will be good to try thier BBQ brisket next time. Went back a month later for BBQ brisket and it was worth it . Hi Glen, I just received your email (it was in the spam folder). I am assuming that you were contacted by my insurance company. My daughter and I walked to a nearby restaurant called Mack's Catering,773 Quinebaug Rd, Quinebaug CT (excellent food) to arrange for roadside service. My insurance company gave me the impression that they were not able to reach anyone, so I tried to make arrangements myself. Everyone said we were too far away, so I contacted Uber (who canceled). I finally arranged for a pick up from Lyft which was great because Mack's would be closing at 8:00 pm (15 min). The restaurant owner in addition to allowing us to repeatedly use their business and personal phone. Went even further and gave us a gas can with gas in it. As if that was not enough the owner helped me put the gas in since the gas can was malfunctioning. To top it all off they never charged us for the coffee we ordered while we were waiting. Furthermore, one of the roadside assistance drivers we contacted earlier decided to show up after the fact , INTOXICATED, AND DEMANDING CASH PAYMENT. The owner then took it upon herself to follow me to the gas station to make sure we were safe, so to answer your question, yes we made it home okay. read more

Deb Merrill, my catering specialist could not have been more accomadating, PROMPT, and consultative. She helped me figure out the best plan for my budget. She remained in constant contact with me throughout the process, up to and including the event. They are getting so busy and popular that Deb had to help with my set up. The barbecue is TO DIE FOR. The ribs were succulent, not dry. The chicken quarters were moist. The pulled pork was as tender as can be. Their BBQ sauce is just the right blend of spices and tomatoe sauce. We first tried Mack's in the restaurant before booking them for our daughter's 18th birthday party. The food at the table and delivered to our door was excellent. I have never had such a tasty prime rib, the spices they use are superb. She enjoyed the chicken parm. We had both on our catering menu. It was so good I ordered the prime rib again for a small gathering of friends. We also contracted for my daughter's graduation party, the preparation, set up, and courtesy were all world class. I would nitpick one thing, at the party they cooked all the burgers at the same time. In my family people arrive at different times and eat at different times, so many people were not getting food fresh off the grill. I only include this so the reader will be prepared, or ask that it be handled differently (they were on site long enough to space out the cooking more).
