Yelp makes it hard to rate nationwide services of a company, so this is a mixed review. 1) Local service: The staff has always been polite and professional. The unit is clean and accessible. The storage price has gone up over 200% in the ten or so years I have had a unit. It is now really taking a chunk out of my SS income. 2) National service: I spent over 1/2 hour unsuccessfully trying to get my automatic payment switched from a discontinued credit card to a new card. Because I didn't know the old telephone number no longer in use that I had when I started with PS and didn't know the account number, I was told there was NO WAY they could work with me. I went to my bank and got the account number associated with my automatic payments through my credit card. But when I called Chase, I was told that that was not an account number. Fortunately, I later thought to look in my e-mails (neither of the impolite women from PS suggested that I might find my account number in e-mails confirming my auto payments) and found my account number. But even with this number, I got no-where: I was given a list of numbers to press, none of which took me to either a human being or an option to adjust payments. I have left a message with the local director, so maybe she can take care of this simple task that has taken me over an hour and a half now. read more

Rented the unit over the phone and when we got there, there was a leak and hole in the ceiling. We called the customer service number and the guy on the phone was useless. Wanted to charge us a transfer fee because we needed a new unit that didn't have leaking. Keep in mind we never even used the unit. Had it for all of 20 min. He was extremely unhelpful and rude. We didn't have a lot of time and the guy kept going in circles. But when we went into the office, the employee Natalie was about to go on break but saw us coming up and immediately helped us and was super nice and got us a new unit immediately. I was told to bring a driver's license to park a truck. My truck was at a repair shop immediately after I bought it. I purchased the truck a month ago and needed to pick it up from the repair shop after it was fixed. Being thanksgiving weekend, I was unable to renew the registration until next week since the temp registration was only for 30 days. After making the reservation for storage, I was told I only needed my driver's license to rent a spot. The woman there wanted my license, registration, and title. I'm not sure why she needed everything just to rent a spot. I would not recommend for any vehicle or boat parking. The woman here is very rude. read more

When I addressed this issue with Evelyn the manager she was indifferent and condescending. She further lied to me and told me check out was at 3. We visited several times as there were specific things we needed for the space. She was very diligent and patient working with us. She explained everything very well as far as the process and costs and even making sure we cancelled our other space in time so we won't be charged for two spaces! If i could give this place negative Stars I would. I was late 20 days on my rent they cut my lock and went into my unit i have pictures of how my stuff was moved. They should not go into the unit and dig around I called the district manager and she never replied back three times and left messages. Find another storage place. a former employee of Public Storage told me how dirty they can get and what they do. Now my rent is raised and can not get a hold of a district manager i have missing things from that unit. I will be looking for a new storage unit and not using public storage at all ever and I would not recommend Public Storage. read more

I rented a large storage unit for about 8 years at this public storage facility. The price increased 87% over this time (11% increase per year on average). The facility is adequate, but the people who work there are sub-par. They are frequently absent, and they do not keep the bathrooms, gates, elevators, or entrance doors from operating properly. Most annoying, though, there are no garbage cans anywhere. There are dumpsters but, as I learned a few weeks ago, customers may not dispose of trash or recycling in those dumpsters. I disposed of broken down boxes and garbage bags that contained paper packing material in a dumpster one rainy day. An hour or so later, I received a phone call from the property manager (Evelyn) telling me that I need to return to "pick up your garbage." She didn't care that I live an hour from the facility. When I objected, she threatened me with "a $10,000 fine." Although such a threat is ludicrous, it worked because I didn't want the hassle of a fight with these people. So I returned that very day, and reloaded my soaking wet packing materials from the dumpster into my car. What should Evelyn the property manager have said instead? How about, "Hi Jay, We have a policy that you may not be aware of (and that is not mentioned in our 'terms and conditions') that does not allow customers to throw away or recycle anything at our facility. I just wanted to let you know this for the future." Sometimes customers should be treated well, even at an unhappy storage facility. I cancelled my Public Storage account that very day and moved our belongings to Extra Space Storage. Not only does Extra Space Storage allow renters to use their dumpsters, their facility is well-maintained, and the employees are friendlier and more competent. It doesn't hurt that I'm now paying a lot less as well. read more

The Manager of this facility is HORRIBLE and she does not value your business AT ALL! We moved in maybe 5 months and on the 5th month saw that our rate went up 15% When I called to get this issue resolved the manager seemed careless and when I said then we would move, she did not care and said: "Ok then you'll be moving.." WOW HORIBLE customer service!!!! The raise in the fee does not make any sense. She told me that the prices go up every 6-12 months and told her, NOT by 15% Are you telling me that my storage price will be going up 30% EVERY year? That is INSANE. We will be moving as soon we can! read more

Molly is fabulous. I wish all the employees were as cool as her. She helped us move our unit (we've been there for six years now) and gave us insight to move every so often in order to keep our rates low. The reason for the three stars is that other employees are a bit clueless. While Molly gave us good (and assuming correct) information regarding how much time we had to move units, another employee told us (incorrectly) that we only had until the close of that day's business day to move. If we had listened to him only, we would have messed up our weekend moving the next day. Another complaint I have is them closing the shop randomly throughout the day AND not coming back when they say they will. For example, this past Sunday we went out there to cancel our insurance with them (since our renters insurance covers our storage unit) and they had a sign up that they'd be back at 1:15. I get that they have to take lunch and if there's only one person there (why is this anyway?) this is what they need to do. But 20 minutes later they still weren't back. We had to run other errands and come back to cancel our insurance (which we couldn't do over the phone) which was a major inconvenience. I'm much happier when I don't have to see anyone in the office (which thankfully is most of the time). read more

I want to say that the customer service here I feel is excellent I was helped by a few employees Nick the manager, Heidi, Roger and Ron they all made me feel very comfortable and they showed me all the storage lockers available & offered me easy access to purchase boxes tape and all moving materials which is a great feature and also very accommodating for last-minute move needs. The facilities are very user friendly and well kept. I like the fact you get you own key card code to enter and exit to keep all the storages safe. Extremely disappointed with this facility. We rented a unit temporarily, storing our belongings in between moves. We needed access to our items and they decreased their hours we could have access AFTER we signed up. They do not open until late morning and close around 6pm. So if you work full time, dont bother storing anything here. Also, the elevator was out of service all the time. They rarely had carts available...so plan to bring your own if you're moving heavy stuff. Lastly, very cold customer service (in person and over the phone). Property manager and staff were rude and unfriendly when we inquired about the above complaints. One of those companies that does NOT care about the customer. read more

Went in today to rent a storage locker. Nick helped us out and was great. He helped me pick the right size unit to meet our needs. The pricing was fair, but they do require that you buy renter's insurance, so the price was higher in total than what I was originally quoted. The facility is VERY clean and well-maintained. Looked at several different self storage facilities in the area and this Public Storage was the cheapest by far. Staff was pleasant and professional. No fuss, no overselling, just showed me exactly what I needed to know. I'm not familiar with the outside units, but the indoor climate controlled units in the back building are spotless. Three floors with a huge elevator and free flat beds to use. A great experience overall! read more

I would not recommend storing at this particular facility at this time. Reason being: customer service is simply unfriendly. The customer service from the store level up through management, regional director and even excalations line in corporate headquarters is unsatisfactory where messages are not returned and the customer is not honored unless you go to corporate to voice a complaint. The empolyees have a tendency to bate and switch the offers that they make and coporate headquaters do not answer calls or voice messages. My suggestion is to register online and then finish your paperwork in person to complete your lease for storage. read more

We got our small unit broken into last month. They pried open the wire top and emptied some boxes. Obviously, they could not take entire boxes and did not want the ones with books. Part of the problem is the unlocked entrance and lack of cameras but it is also easy to rent a unit and then break into others. Management was not very helpful. They sent me to the Morton Grove Police Department where I found out that over the last two or three months, 30 to 50 units were broken into and no changes have been made! No discounts offered. NOTHING. I do not recomment using this facility. read more

I am absolutely livid after my recent experience here. The whole process was a nightmare. I reserved a unit online and they supposedly didn't have that unit available at that price and I ended up paying $30+ extra per month. The customer service representative kept helping others in between me making the process take much longer. To make matters worse, when I went to drop off my stuff later that day, there was a lock on my unit. I opted to bring my own lock. Nobody was in the office so I called customer service and they said there was nothing they could do. She made no effort to help me. So I had a truck full of stuff and nowhere to put it. Also the truck had to be returned that night. It's ridiculous that they would put a lock on my empty unit after I paid for it. All this caused me an extra $200 to keep the truck. read more

If you are considering using this business, I would suggest you schedule a root canal instead... it would be less painful and more enjoyable. Leaving aside the obvious lack of maintenance of the site over the past three years, this winter really took the plaid cat. Understandably, this was a difficult snow season, but one would believe that if you are in the business of providing storage space for folks' stuff that it would make sense to remove snow and ice blocking said access. Apparently, that, to Public Storage, is an unrealistic expectation. On numerous occasions my wife attempted to either bring things into or take things out of her storage space. Due to the build up of snow, access to the door leading to the space was blocked. She complained and was told that they had problems getting people to shovel the snow. There was, apparently, some half-hearted attempt to remove the snow by throwing salt. This caused a freeze-thaw cycle which caused water to flow into the hallway and then refreeze, (at best a tripping/slipping hazard). In frustration, I contacted the district manager. 48 hours later, he returned my call and said the problem would be taken care of. The slipshod manner in which this was done convinced us to move the stuff to another location, so over the past month the space was emptied, (the final items were taken out 3-31-14). When I called today, 4-1-14, to notify them that the space was empty, I was informed that there would be a prorated charge of $2.50! REALLY? Apparently customer safety and service is not part of the culture at this location. read more

Like several other customers of this facility, I wish that I could give this place negative stars. We've been here ~10 years. The prices increased dramatically every year. We've absorbed all of the prices increases, because it felt daunting to move all our stuff. Lately, however, things have gotten bad enough that we've finally decided to suck it up and move to a new facility. Let me list the reasons that I will not miss this place: 1) Things are constantly broken (the gate, the automatic doors, even the bathroom!). There's just no excuse for this, given how few things there are to keep up. 2) They clearly don't have enough carts for the number of units. A lot of people bring their own small carts, but it's ridiculous to have to do this, given the prices they charge. 3) They recently reduced their hours. I'm sure this is a great change for the property manager but it is not so great for the customers. 4) They have also decided to get rid of every trash receptacle on the premises. You literally cannot find a place to throw out your empty Starbucks cup. They used to have a dumpster by each exit where you could place garbage on the way out -- not huge stuff like a sofa, but some empty boxes or nonworking Christmas lights. I realize that eliminating these receptacles makes things easier and cheaper for the facility, but it's terrible for customers. At these prices, I expect to be able to throw small items away. 5) Lazy, unpleasant, unhelpful employees. This place never hired the best and brightest, but they used to be mostly nice. That is no longer the case. I get that these are crappy jobs, but when a big part of your job is customer service, you need to at least try to be helpful and pleasant. read more

I rented a unit here back in October when Molly was the manager and the experience was very professional. It was clear that customer satisfaction mattered. Fast forward a few months, new person here on the weekend and refers to herself as the manager, has the mentality of 'you're here with your movers what are you going to do, you have no options.' When I reserve a first floor climate controlled unit that's what I want. A first floor unit should not require pushing or pulling all your stuff up a 40 foot ramp at 35 degree incline to get to your unit. All other non first floor units clearly state whether it has stair or elevator access. How about saying you need to go up a ramp? And a rather long one. I tried my shot at speaker with the so-called manager but of course now nothing else is available unless I get a much larger unit at a much higher cost. I even called her an hour before arriving to confirm, and she said yes it is on the first floor and proceeded to define what public storage sees as the 'first floor.' Listen, I know how to read. I know need a machine-like person repeating what I already know. If I pay for a first floor unit, that's what I want. Bring Molly back! read more
