We were visiting the Marfa/Fort Davis and wanting to do horseback riding. We looked all over and for the value and views (Mountains!) we choose Prude Ranch. We were not disappointed! It was my wife and son with me for a 2 hour ride. Our guide was Jake and he was awesome. Kind, knowledgeable and thoughtful when it came to us and the horses. We couldn't have imaged a better ride. This was our first trip to the region and ranch but won't be our last. This is a must do when visiting the area. read more

The price is very fair. Everything works. But brown is the predominant color. From what I gather, we are here at the end of the season. This place could handle more than 40 RVs... we only saw three RVs and one of them was ours. The facilities are old but it is a working ranch. The horses were well fed and the staff couldn't have been more friendly. We just didn't see much of them over the weekend. read more

*This review does not reflect the guides, only the room.* DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! I scheduled a trail ride for 2 children and reserved a room. I was told the trail ride was $30 per person and that the room would be $60. However, when I arrived they said the room was $90. Not cool! It wouldn't have even made me so mad if the room had been decent, but it was HORRIBLE!!!!! The room smelled so bad of mildew/ mold that we could barely sleep because we kept coughing and sneezing. It was really thick in the air. The mattresses were, and I'm not exaggerating here, at least 30 years old. The mattresses on the bunk beds weren't even really mattresses, but like a really old, really lumpy futons. The king mattress was severely bowed in the middle. The room contained an old garage sale looking dresser that was stained and paint coming off it. There was no tv, microwave, mini fridge, or any little perk a standard hotel room has. My kid said it perfectly when she said it was like something she envisioned people crossing the country in 1800 would stay at. That's EXACTLY how it was, and not in a cute/quaint/rustic sort of way. Like literally how it was in that time period. Look, I'm no spoiled brat that has champagne tastes on a beer budget. I just want clean room. For $102 (including taxes) I expect the room to be comfortable. It definitely was NOT. read more

It was exactly what we wanted for our spring break getaway. We stayed in a hillside cabin. There are four units in the cabins, which did mean there was the possibility of noise from the neighbors, but it wasn't a problem. The room was generously sized and clean, albeit dated and rustic (which, tbh, was part of the charm). We stayed up late playing cards and then enjoyed the stars. read more

Was able to leave at least one star because at least there was running water and electricity... for $150 a night you'd at least expect for spiders to not be crawling in your bed and rat poop EVERYWHERE. Literally in every corner of the cabin and in the couch and right next to the beds Could not sleep comfortably after finding so many spiders in the beds. The mattresses were very stained, everything is dusty, shower pressure sucked, cobwebs fill the cabin. Didn't see any staff members or things to do on the weekend. The horses didn't look so great and I would have felt terrible riding them. I get it's a ranch but that's not an excuse for being so filthy. Don't see myself coming back with my family or recommending to anyone. read more

Had a truly exceptional experience here! Emma, the wrangler, was just brilliant and matched me with the most perfect horse who was spirited yet so sweet--really couldn't have had a better guide or horse. I was particularly lucky to have Emma all to myself, but it was really impressive how well she listened and responded to what I was after here. Also so impressed with the variety of horses on the grounds. Don't believe I've ever gushed like this but it's definitely so deserved. Prude Ranch is an amazing place! Centrally located near Ft. Davis as well as the McDonald's Observatory. The amenities are rustic but perfect and the price we paid for the stay was budget friendly. The horseback riding they provided was really cool and worth it. Everyone who works there is nice, friendly and approachable. The indoor pool on the property provided some extra fun for our kids. We have been going to Prude Ranch for many years. It is not for anyone who wishes fancy quarters or fake Southwestern atmosphere. Basic, safe, comfortable, unpretentious. The surrounding hills are lovely, and the view of the sky at night is unparalleled. If you visit, consider including : horse ride at Prude (again, very basic and un-duded), a day and/or night at McDonald Observatory, a walk/drive along Skyline trail/road at Ft. Davis State Park, Lupino's restaurant for breakfast. We always feel refreshed by the fresh air and serene surroundings. read more

My family came here for a reunion... talk about run down! One of the draws, horseback riding.... well, can't do it. Horses need to rest up for camp? Well, they were sad looking horses anyways... I felt bad for them. Why Prude? Well my parents grew up in Marfa and some of my uncles still live in Marfa and Ft. Davis. The ranch was not very accommodating.... Check in is what is convenient for the staff. That room your checking into may or may not have been made up since the last guest, it is kind of like the lottery. I hope you win! Look, I expected rustic... not run down. You can use the fridge but you'll have to put ice in it to keep your stuff cool. If you want to stay here, I hope they've gotten organized and decided to focus on their guests experience! read more

Beautiful and relaxing. The environment is clean and pure just like a dude ranch should be. Horses are mostly free ranging and grazing with a few in pens for rides. Very nice and accommodating staff. Room was clean and comfortable. WiFi very easily accessible for a rustic ranch not near very much. Quiet place with lots of activities to do- horse back rides, hiking trails, nearby observatory, shopping in town, indoor heated swimming pool. Highly recommend. read more

I can not even express in words how horrible this place is. Their constant and decades of abuse towards their horses are deplorable. You think you are getting an experience with wonderful cared for horses but this isn't the case. If they treat their animals so bad what else are they doing to cut prices? Their horses are starving to death, their feet aren't cared for, they are overworked and harshly mistreated. They don't receive the vetting they need. The basics aren't even met. This means they are skimping in all other areas big time. The place is dirty, full of bugs, moldy, old needing basic repairs and completely unsanitary. What is going on in their kitchens and how are they cleaning their property? With cheap, chemically filled products. If you don't agree, look at the pictures and if you happen to go there, ask for a tour of everything and all of it. Please do not send your children there. It's dangerous. I had to put one star on the review or it wouldn't let me post but this place is negative 100 stars. Beware!!! read more

We called the morning of and got easily signed up for an hour long horse back ride! Guides were very thorough with riding instructions. The guides educated us about the area we were riding telling us about a cult that used to reside next door, all the observatories, and old Texas tales about cowboys. They made jokes and got to know each rider personally. The small group made for a very enjoyable ride! The ride was also very reasonably priced. Overall we had an amazing experience and will return next time we're in the area! Highly recommend!! read more

Fantastic time! If you want a real ranch experience, reserve a site in the upper lot. Watch the horses below and hike the trails.
