We tried the Chef's Menu. Food was mostly good, some plates we liked were the salmon salad, Foie, thai curry and pork collar. Desserts were meh. However the real fail was the service, which was abismal. We waited 30-40 minutes between plates, so a 4-course meal took about 2.5 hours. The server had an attitude from the begining (it seems like she wasn't thrilled with us not ordering alcohol and decided to show it in every interaction). I've lived down the street from Proxi for yearsss and I finally went here for dinner after I moved out of the city! Everything on their menu sounds delicious and I found it hard to decide what to order. We ended up getting tempura elotes, khanom khrok, coal roasted mussels, khao soi noodles and braised pork belly. Dinner was good, but not as amazing as I expected it to be. The elotes were just ok. The khanom khrok were actually too creamy imo. The roasted mussels were good, but nothing new. The khao soi noodles were surprisingly my favorite. I really like the long noodles. The pork belly was ok, a bit too sweet. Proxi - perhaps using their name to designate themselves as a liaison for the myriad of flavors represented across Asia and Latin America - struck my interest for its unique menu options for brunch. If you're similarly egg-ed, waffled, and bacon-ed out, Proxi is a good candidate for your weekend mid-morning meal. I went on a Saturday morning alone, near opening, and easily got an individual table near the kitchen counter. It never got too busy and seating options abound for anywhere from 1 to 8 guests. Casual dress and very accommodating: bring your kids, bring your wife, bring your business partner. There's some street and garage parking nearby that's easier to manage here than the more populous parts of W Randolph. The menu for brunch is just long enough to give variety without overwhelming. The waiters were very friendly, but couldn't describe the menu items very well. When I asked about the Uttapam, this gentleman basically read the description on the menu back to me, and when the woman at the table next to me asked what was in the Relax tea, he had to go back and check. With a menu so small and with many foreign influences, it would absolutely help to have knowledgeable staff on board to answer the inevitable questions! Now the food itself - delicious. If you're coming for a taste of the old country, this is not the place to indulge in your father's congee or grandma's kimchi. However, they do a great job at blending old concepts with new ingredients or cooking methods. Their drink menu is also quite extensive. - The PROXI donut was just okay (but I admit I'm not a huge donut fan), - but I really enjoyed the Tempura Elotes! It's a sweet and sour combo of grilled corn and tempura batter dressed with okonomiyaki-like toppings. If you're going to box something to go, don't make it this one. I guarantee this won't taste as good when soggy. - The Catfish Bahn Mi was a little much for one person to finish after having two apps, but it's 5 layers of varying crunch that was super fun to eat. The catfish is buttery and flaky, and all the other ingredients were well-proportioned for flavor and texture! Bathrooms were similarly refined in nature, with 5 gender-neutral individual stalls. Each has their own sink and are perfect for a private touch-up session before returning to your meal. We really enjoyed the food at Proxi. The dishes had bold flavors that were beautifully balanced with great wine pairings. However, even though we had a couple snacks before arriving, the portions were too small and we left still hungry. It's not fun having to find another place to eat after spending $235. The ambiance was comfortable and server was great, but the staff was too quick to fill up waters and remove plates. I got a reservation for 7:30 on a Friday night the same Tuesday, so I would say reservations aren't too hard to get. Think this might be due to them overbooking though because we had to wait 20 minutes past our reservation for the table to be ready. I got the Therefore I Am vodka cocktail which was $15 and refreshing; overpriced like every other cocktail in chicago but it is what it is. On to the food -- we got the chef's tasting menu which is $65 per person for a good amount of food. 3 plates to share for course 1 and 2, then choice of one entree per person for the third course, and finally 2 desserts to share. The space is gorgeous! The dishes we ordered were great. We especially loved the BANH KHOT. We ordered 2 rounds of this dish. Our server was very attentive. My only thing about the menu is that one side is al a carte and the other side is for 3 course meal option so the menu can seem a little limited. This review is regarding the 2021 restaurant week menu - 55$ four course option. Overall, this place had a nice ambience and the food was good, but a bit underwhelming. Perhaps this is because it's an Asian fusion place, and as someone who grew up with authentic Chinese cooking, there are some pieces that I think would have been better as their original flavor. Some pieces tasted the same as what you could get from a cheaper restaurant, but priced much higher here. For the price point, there are better options for restaurant week that offer larger portion sizes, even with only a three course meal, at the same 55 dollar price. If we had went with the 39 dollar three course meal, I think I would have still been hungry. Highlights: The tempura elotes was my favorite. This was actually sooo good. Perfectly crunchy and flavorful. The pana cotta was also really delicious. The bright green color on it was kind of off putting, but it tasted amazing. Not too rich or sweet, and very fruity. Misses: The soba noodles taste pretty much the same as soba noodles you could get anywhere else. Nothing particularly interesting so would pass on this. The coconut pancakes were a bit bland - with the small shrimp being really the only flavorful thing on there. We were 5 of us and ordered about 2-3 plates a person which was more than enough To start we got the spring vegetarian salad and it was delish.. surely get it!!! Then came the muhammara which came with paratha. You only get 4 slices so be aware if u are a party of more. The tempura elotes has been hyped a lot so we had to give it a try. But the experience will be much better great without the server we had tonight. This is our fourth time and the worst server experience. If there's no star I will confidently mark it. The food was still good but the server ruined it. Just the approach was unbelievably shockingly off. The server brush everything off like it never happened and it's not okay to forget our orders. In addition, bring out additional drinks that wasn't ordered. Doesn't help brushing it off and said, "I got you the drinks more spicy!" I said, " no no!" When I already had the second just came out! It's just a joke! So I asked for a manager and Natalie showed up and politely asked what happened. I stood up to speak to her at eye level to show respect and the server came and interrupted. I shared with Natalie Banh Khot was placed first with drinks before all the food came out and we had finished. It came last. I asked the server is the banh khot still coming out. Towards the end when we finished the other entrees. Without saying anything she said,"it's coming." So I ordered the pork belly. Even that also came out before the banh khot. I asked the server who brought the pork belly which was even out before the banh khot we ordered first and haven't came out. Please just cancel we asked the server. Then behind him came the ordered. I then shared with Natalie. Natalie said," let me check the ordered time. I also looked at the ordered and it showed it was placed at 9:04pm. Last ordered on the ordered sequence. Come on! Natalie said,"she stage it!" I didn't appreciate that. Just be honest. Especially when we ordered first with our first drinks. I understand people can forget but just brushing it like it's no big deal doesn't go well with me. If you're in hospitality, please do your research tonight. You just lost a trusted customer. In addition, the server asked if we're okay with drinks when we finished first, and anything else. I said one more please with additional salt. She went to the cashier and enter the order. Before the second drink came out she came back and asked again about the drinks. I said,"we did order one more". The second came out and the. again two more drinks arrived and still she brush it off. Just doesn't happen. We were shocked! Something is off. Waste of efforts for bar tender, manager and other server she worked with. Also the chefs. I still just gave $20 tip to the others which I said to Natalie, and definitely not the server we had. Still paid the bill of $209.00. Just sorry we decided to go there for dinner. Never again! Proxi was our least favorite restaurant during our time in Chicago. We sat at the bar and started with the Tempura Elote which was delicious, a must try. Unfortunately, the remainder of the dishes we ordered were a disappointment. The Foie Gras steamed buns, two buns per order, while the buns were nice and soft, we could not taste the foie gras due to the overwhelming amount of apple hoisin sauce. Same experience with the red braised Pork Belly steamed buns, all we could taste was the excessive amount of sauce. The biggest disappointment was the Grilled Octopus with yellow pepper romesco sauce. The octopus was cooked nicely, but the romesco was way too spicy. I enjoy spicy foods, but the romesco was over the top spicy, totally inedible. We decided not to order anymore food and instead head to another restaurant in the Fulton Market area for dinner. TLDR: a whole lot of creative fusion, with very disappointing results. They let their creativity run wild and forgot that they're supposed to be making something delicious. Form without function. This meal cost almost as much as my plane tickets, and I would've rather eaten airplane food. At least it would match my expectations. This was the first time in a hundred meals that a Michelin guide recommendation left me disappointed. I love experimental food but this felt like 90% experiment and 10% understanding of flavor and texture. There's a lot of creativity going on, but it feels like the head chef lost sight of the forest for the trees. The "tiramisu" (their quotes, not mine) is the perfect example -- it's made with tea instead of coffee, but then it doesn't have flavor, texture, structure, or appearance of tiramisu. Literally the only thing tying it to tiramisu is the concept of coffee in a cake, which they replaced with tea. It's much denser (much closer to bread pudding), it's not made in layers, it's not bittersweet, and there's no creamy filling. Calling this tiramisu is like offering "apple pie" and then serving shepherd's pie. They're definitely both pie, and that's where the similarities end. What is the obsession with microgreens? Every single dish had them, even the foie gras spread for the bread. How am I supposed to spread whole sunflower shoots on a roll with a butter knife? At least dice them so they don't take over the wonderful creaminess of the foie gras. It's like no one thought about how the food was going to be eaten. The tamale is placed on top of the most flavorless gray paste I've ever had, and then the tamale is just as bland. At least put some salt in there. They must've used it all up in the crab cakes because wow it was like the ocean. It was delicious for a few bites but an entire bowl of super salty crab is tough to finish. The yuba skewers are made to look like meat and then have a very off-putting mushroom-like chewiness. The bhel puri has so much going on that it would've been better as pani puri so it was a single contained bite (of course it was covered in a layer of microgreens and flowers, which were way too big for the spoon we were given). I was really hoping for some cool fusion food. I got a lot of fusion, but not a lot of food. Also, the waiter asked if I had been there before, and when I said no, he assumed I'd never had a chef's menu, or ever been to a fancy restaurant, and the whole vibe became... educational? I guess that's what mansplaining feels like. My date and I both found the sudden smugness very odd. When I asked him if the microgreens were made in-house, he said he would check, and never came back. The restaurant is beautiful and has a lot of potential. The ideas are good, they're just taken way too far and the balance of flavor, texture, and serving size varies wildly between dishes. I love the concept of microgreens and edible flowers, but it needs to be toned down to a garnish, not a layer, or integrated better. If this restaurant was a much lower price point, I'd give it more stars, but I expect more for this price range and its listing on the Michelin Guide. read more

I saw Proxi on my friend's Instagram story, and she's definitely a big foodie and everything she got looked delicious, and she said she really enjoyed it. With her glowing recommendation (I messaged her if the food looked as good as it tasted), I had higher expectations for Proxi. Unfortunately, I found it to be one of those bougie West Loop restaurants that have a good look but don't live up to the hype. The food is solid, but nothing amazing for how expensive it is and how small the portions are. My friend and I got the tempura elotes to share, which I thought were an interesting dish, but ultimately I would've loved regular elote. It was good though, and if you're looking for an app to start off with, I'd recommend this one. I got the coconut pandan french toast, because I love pandan, and while I did taste hints of it, I've definitely had better pandan brunch foods (and better pandan-flavored dishes in general). Again, it was good, but not great, hence the 3 stars. I think at a lower price point, this place could be a 4-star review, but I just wasn't feeling it enough for how much I spent on this meal. My friend got kimchi rice, which keeping in theme, was solid, but not special. I've definitely had better kimchi rice at actual Korean places. In general, I felt Proxi was trying to spin it as unique and using global flavors in inventive ways, and while it's definitely using global flavors, I really don't think it's doing anything particularly inventive. There are definitely actual Mexican places, Filipino places, etc. doing much more interesting and delicious things with foods like elote and pandan and kimchi, and I'd rather go to one of those than this. read more

This place isn't cheap and the portions are smallish, but the food was spectacular and there was meticulous attention paid to diner safety and to hygiene. On top of that, the interior is beautiful, the atmosphere romantic, and the service great. What we ordered (1 glutton, 1 normal person): * Tempura elotes ($9) - 4/5 - the two golden, crispy fritters were interestingly very tangy at first (possibly a little too tangy for my tastes); crispy on the outside, warm and corn-y on the inside - this was very good, but did not surpass my expectations * Grilled mushroom & yuba salad ($12) - 5/5 - in case you are wondering, 'yuba' is just a fancy term for tofu skin. This was really good and I would definitely order again. Slightly tangy (clearly this chef knows all about Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat and actually mastered the principles), perfectly cooked 'noodles' and a nice variety of mushrooms * Coal roasted scallops ($18) - 5/5 - another dish I would order again. Sadly you only get two large, perfectly cooked scallops, but the congee and chili oil are sublime; this was surprisingly quite spicy, too * Grilled half young chicken ($15) - 4.5/5 - I thought the zingy, super flavorful papaya salad that came with this complemented the tender, milder chicken perfectly. I wouldn't order this on a first date because there are some bones to glamorously gnaw around, but this is very good * Frozen almond parfait ($8) - 4/5 - when the server brought this to the table I'll admit I was disappointed at first. It looked like a block of flattish tofu. Still have no clue what exactly was in it, but it was quite good, and probably the most intriguing dessert I've ever had. My favorite topping was the roasted cherries, but the two different kinds of cookie or whatever that crunchy stuff was, and the very bitter Vietnamese coffee syrup all came together with the buttery, almond base beautifully. We came on a weekday evening and I made a reservation a few days in advance for an outdoor table, but due to rain we ended up being seated at a high-top table. Next time I would probably just choose a high-top to begin with because the interior is lovely and we were right next to the open doors and windows. I also liked that we were given special bags for holding our masks, and that you just access the menu online and can pay online, too. The patio had heaters to help with the chilly evening. Food was served timely and portioned out well. Drinks were flavorful yet balanced. The food was absolutely delicious. This place is HIP! It's now one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago! Walking in, I had no expectations of this place but this place is awesome! Tempura elotes- I got an entire order to myself based on how popular it was on the photos. That was a clever decision because I absolutely loved it! Grilled sweet potato salad- ehh, it was ok. It was literally just a salad with some pieces of sweet potato. Black pepper pork- it's a fancy name for Asian lettuce wrap. It comes with lettuce, condiments- apple sticks, mint, cilantro, carrot sticks, and cute little bottles of what tasted like hoisin sauce and sriracha. It's fun for the experience. I loved the peanut portion of pork mix that made it crunchy. Grilled Half Young Chicken- I'm not a chicken person to begin with, but my dining mate wanted to order. The sauce that came with it tasted similar to Thai chili sauce for Thai chicken wings. I didn't like this dish and thought it was a waste. Seared Scallops- comes with 2 pieces for $18, but it was so good! If I wasn't so full, I would've ordered a second dish. It was very flavorful. Crispy Vietnamese crepe- maybe should've done 2 orders for this too. We cut it in half to share. The crepe is really crispy! It's similar to Asian veggie pancake (flour mix) cooked crispy that has pork belly and shrimp on the inside. I also liked the salad that came with it as well. Vanilla Flan- my reason #2 why I picked this place after tempura elotes. Omg. It was soooooo good! The Flan's texture was perfect and the grilled pineapples on top made it extra tasty! The chef's tasting was artfully prepared, tasted incredible, and went above and beyond what I could have even expected. I mean I raised ducks and now I derive great pleasure from consuming them. Especially this delicious, pickle-y duck on scallion crepe. I'll never forget the 13 ducks we raised that got murdered by an opossum; I will also never forget these crepes. 7: Thai yellow curry: this was one of my personal favorites. The curry blended incredibly well with all the seafood goodness 8: Wood grilled pork tenderloin: fatty, smokey pork paired with a delish mole and knob onions made this dish a winner. 9: Grilled prime short rib: no element was left out. We sat at the counter near the kitchen to catch a little glimpse of the hustle and bustle of the kitchen. Service was 5 stars. I would put Proxi at 3.5 stars and rounded up - service, drinks, ambiance, and crowd were all pretty solid. I would say the food was pretty meh overall, some of it kind of weird. Tapas with an international spin is a fun idea, and there's plenty of cuisine diversity on the menu. I think the ideal size for a place like Proxi is probably a group of 4-5 so you can sample enough variety. I think maybe 2-3 per person depending on the sizes and how much people ate - some of the offerings were a lot larger, although quite a few tapas were very small. The cocktails and wine menu is pretty solid, although I would say a lot of their cocktails leaned very sweet and sugary. The food themselves were a bit hit and miss for me. I thought the duck dumplings, the burrata, the octopus were all really good, and the Vietnamese crepe was pretty lacking. There was also a dish that I cannot remember or find on the menu anymore - it may have been the pork jelly - that was bizarrely plated as a piece of jerky on a skewer and was really not very good. Overall the ambiance is very posh and fun, and the cocktails are worth a try. The food is very meh but it's a nice place to grab a dinner with a group of friends. read more

Proxi was highly recommended to us by a friend and we were really happy with our meal. We came in the midst of COVID in a party of 6 and we were seated in one of the large booths. Had our temperatures checked beforehand, masks were required when not eating, and there were plastic shield barriers between booths. We appreciated the public health measures they have put in place. They seemed slightly understaffed that night and it took a while to get our orders in and our orders out, though not outrageously so. The food was good. We particularly enjoyed the elotes and scallops. The ambience was really nice here. The music is pretty loud, so maybe not the best place to have intimate conversations, but a fun vibe overall. read more

Happened on this place by accident late on a Saturday night and decided to give it a try. So glad I did. Creative international small plates and cocktails. I'm not much of a cocktail guy, so I skipped over the very creative offerings there, and found out that they have an extensive collection of single-malt scotches, which made me very happy. Upon the recommendation of the very helpful waiter, I ordered Tempura Elotes (kind of a Japanese/Mexican elevated corn fritter) and Stone Bass with rasa broth and turmeric potatoes. Both plates were incredibly delicious - great flavors, textures. This is a place where food is just plain fun to eat. Note: I was in a wheelchair and despaired a bit seeing the two steps to get to the entrance, but no worries- the friendly staff quickly pulled out a ramp that they have just for that occasion and welcomed me. read more

Just wow! In Chicago for a long weekend and our experience with their restaurant week prix fixe was so incredible. You get an incredible amount of eclectic and delicious dishes. We loved everything but some of our unexpected favorites were the salt and pepper tofu, the mushroom salad and the carrots! We also had impeccable mocktails! Ehhhhh. Not terrible, but not nearly what we expected, especially for the high prices. $18 for two scallops? No, thanks. $15 for a martini? Yikes, but that's Chicago for you, I guess. However, my wife and I have been to plenty of restaurants in the area, paid about the same price, and have had much better meals. Like I said earlier, it wasn't terrible. It really wasn't. We just weren't wowed by anything that we tried. We ordered the tempura elotes, burrata, coal baked oysters, scallops, and young jerk chicken with plantains. The elotes was by far the most memorable dish of the evening, and perhaps the only one I'd really recommend. Skip the burrata. It was, unfortunately, lacking in flavor and the bread came fairly burnt and acrid-tasting. The oysters weren't my thing and my wife felt like they were lacking in flavor, and the scallops were good, but overpriced. The chicken was alright, but a VERY small portion for the price. The plantains that came with the chicken were very tasty. We also felt very rushed. Granted, we got there at 6, but we were done with dessert by quarter to 7. Generally, these meals (complete with cocktails, dessert, etc.) can take us up to 2 hours. We left feeling rather underwhelmed and wishing we had made reservations at any of the other restaurants on Randolph. Great 'fusion' type experience and a very different take on food! Came here with a work group on a Tuesday night. We arrived on time and were told to wait (for what ended up being almost ten minutes) while our tables were prepared. There wasn't a great place for 14 of us to wait, either. The food was phenomenal. Since it was a prearranged meal we had a set menu with three courses (multiple dishes served family-style in each). The shaved zucchini noodles, mushroom and yuba noodle salad (I don't even like mushrooms!) and baby octopus were my personal favorites. Everything was good, and the flavor combinations were very different. The pacing of the meal was very odd. We sat down, got the explanation and our drink orders taken very quickly, then sat for a while before the drinks were served. We then waiting some more for the first course to come out. The second course came out pretty much as soon as the first one was cleared, and then there was a decent gap between the second and third courses. The wait for dessert was the worst, it had to be at least 20 minutes. The desserts were good, the ice cream with popcorn topping was my favorite, but the tofu cheesecake was interesting too. All in all, the food was delicious, but the pacing of the meal (which overall dragged on way too long) kind of put a damper on the evening. read more

Andrew Zimmerman's trendy downtown location is worth a night out splurge. This tapas style place should start with a completive review of the wine list. The wines are solid and I highly recommend the Cabernet by the glass. The shrubs for those who do not drink are equally outstanding. We tried just about everything. The highlights were the rice cakes, swordfish bites and noodles and mushrooms. Oy, those mushrooms were spectacular. The less you recognize the ingredients, the more I recommend trying it. We sat in a cozy banquet near the door. It was not drafty and just romantic and perfect. I hate to do this, but I do have to admit I had one of the worst wiststaff experiences but I have chosen to take that up privately with the restaurant. I anticipate they will get that corrected and you will not have any issues. Date night? Big expense account? Special birthday? This is where you want to be for any and all of them! read more

Good place for drinks/dinner, and not too difficult to get a reservation (was able to get a last minute reservation on a Saturday evening). The interior is really chic and stylish, ambience is nice and the high top seating is comfortable. Tempura elotes were delicious, loved the texture and the dish is a really unique take on elotes.
