These guys are the best in town - truly. Their work is truly impeccable, they're extremely knowledgeable and they're very friendly. They're my go-to framers, I'm very happy to report. My mother gave me a lovely watercolor of Columbus Circle when I left NYC after having lived there for several years. It's not a small painting at about 3x4', so I knew it would be pricey to frame. Seeing as it's a beautiful piece of art, I wanted to make sure it was preserved and framed properly. I took it to Providence Picture Frame, and they knew exactly what to do with it. They aided me in selecting the best matting to bring out the subtle colors, the most elegant frame that was understated enough so as not to take away from the scene, and what type of glass to use. The glass is actually a very important issue - depending on where in your home you plan to hang something, UV light can damage the pigments. So, we went over all of that and I ended up with something really special. Unfortunately, the old seashell and horsehair walls of my early 1900's home didn't want to hold up my new treasure, and one night I was startled awake by the sound of shattering glass. I ran to find my painting on the ground, surrounded by shards. Luckily, the frame remained almost entirely intact - it had been constructed to break apart in a certain way on impact, so I brought it back to PPF the next morning, and they were able to piece the frame back together, and even replaced the glass at a discount since I'd just paid for it. It looked new again. Since then, I've been back several times. They have an entire section of pre-fab frames, mats and glass so you can make your own for about half the price of custom framing. Solid experience. I have a beautiful silk screened print that is squarish and an odd size. It's also not perfectly cut, so I knew it would be a bit hard to work with. I also only spent five dollars on it so I knew I didn't want to spend that much on framing it. I knew I was going to be a difficult customer all around. I was quickly greeted by a gentleman working there and got to work picking out the perfect pieces to make a beautiful frame. He was able to match the matting perfectly to a deep purple that was in the print. Truth be told the frame I created was out of my price range, especially because I have four other similar prints I want done to match. The sales worker was so cool about it when I told him there was no way I could go ahead with buying it. He was very understanding and offered me some tips on how I could mount the print myself to save some money. The staff clearly believes that all customers should be treated well no matter how much they are spending. I can't wait to go back and get supplies for my other prints. Years ago I took several pieces in to be framed and upon pick up I was informed one of my favorite pieces was "gone". I asked what he meant by "gone" and was told it was missing and there was nothing they could do. He was super dismissive and because I was young I didn't know what to do except ask to speak to the manager. I was told that person was on vacation and that the place was being sold to a new person so I should come back another time. I left feeling really taken advantage of and never went back. I have a feeling that missing piece was stolen by him or one of his friends and I was reminded of this incident when I saw some of the other pieces in my storage unit and decided to look up their current value. For the first time ever, I needed one of my photos printed and framed to hang in a gallery exhibition. The printing department worked with me over the course of a half an hour or more, making adjustments and a second print to get the tonality and detail I was looking for. I got a 16x20 and an 11x14 and they both came out exactly as I'd hoped. I took 'em straight across to the framing counter, where a framer helped me through the selection process quickly. All I had to say was "I'm on a budget" and she quickly helped me find a great combination of frame, mat, and glass that makes my photos look professional at a price I could swing. All in all, the experience was so good that I'm sort of looking around for other photos to print and frame. The work is excellent and the people there are top-notch. read more

I called PPF and they were able to print out the art and took time to show me a variety of mat and frame options until I was happy with the final choice. They were able to rush the frame to be completed in a very short deadline and when I noticed a mistake in my artwork- through no fault of theirs- they kindly reprinted and swapped the artwork for me. Yes, their prices are more than Michael's or one of the big box stores, but PPF is a local, family owned and operated shop that has been in business for 100 years or so. When cleaning out my parents' house, we found a hand painted photo of my mom as a little girl. It was in a nice beveled frame but there were pieces broken off. They also assured me that they were insured in case anything happened. It came back with a four inch crack ...which they are doing everything they can do to not take responsibility for. First they said the crack was there when I dropped it off. Now, according to their insurance company , they are saying I did it after I left the store. I will obviously NEVER go back. This place is truly professional offering a range of services with a touch of class and friendliness. They offer art, frames, framing services, plus a lethargic Weimaraner that is great company :) Today, I went to pick up a glass and backing for a frame I picked up at Michael's - no biggie. Since it was built for canvas, it did not have the prongs to hold in place the glass, picture, and backing. They were nice enough to do the prongs for free. Not only once, but twice... because the first setting got wiggly and fell out. The second time, they installed better and more secure placements. Now I can be assured it will be safe. They also offered a free hanging harness. I will definitely go back in the future for any service needs that arise since my friend does a lot of screen printing. read more

Terrible experience. I called ahead to ask if they could trim a mat for me because it was too big for the picture that I wanted framed. They said yes, so I drove over there and was told that they could not do that and a mat cut to my specifications would be $30. Not bad, but more than the couple bucks I thought I was going to spend! But the main reason they get 1 star is that the primary woman working with short white hair was extremely rude. Not only to me, but also to the other woman who was helping me with my questions (who was actually very nice and sympathetic). It felt like I was not welcome there since I didn't have an expensive piece of art to frame and did not want to spend a lot of money on the frame. One star for the nice lady who helped me and the guy who greeted me, but otherwise, terrible feeling going in there and unclear expectations. I recently visited the Providence Picture Frame and didn't have a great experience. I was the only customer in the store and the staff briefly looked up at me. No one would even say hello. The only living thing that wanted to communicate with me was a large dog. Not one of the staff would say if the dog was friendly, or do you mind dogs. I walked upstairs and the dog followed. He started sniffing me in places that made me feel uncomfortable.The dog seemed harmless but sniff my shoes, not my crotch! I love dogs, but I have a bit of a problem with large German dogs because of my ethnicity and past history. I'm upstairs in this dingy, large area with lots of framed prints, mirrors and frames. The upstairs was freezing and still not one person in sight , only this dog who is following my every step. I'm starting to get a little freaked out. My imagination starts to take hold of me. I feel as if I'm in a Stephen King movie. Am I going to be attacked by this dog, is anyone really alive in this store? Did I enter the Twilight Zone? My better judgement took hold, the dog was really friendly. The store has a large selection of merchandise, but it seemed highly overpriced. The reason I say this is because I saw the exact same print in another store for $115 less. The lesser priced print also had a double mat. Maybe the frame made for the large increase in price, but I couldn't see much of a difference between the two frames. I finally found something that I really liked, but it was out of my price range. I returned downstairs and asked if the photograph could be purchased in a smaller size. A person, whom I suspect was the manager replied in a very unpleasant tone "it only comes in one size". Well, at least I got a voice, they are alive. The answer seemed ridiculous for a photograph. It wasn't a commercial print, but a signed and numbered photograph. I'm sure photographs can be ordered in different sizes. There is a very strange ambience to this store. No one seems happy to be there, except for the harmless dog. In conclusion, the only positive aspect of the store is the large selection of frames, prints and posters. The negatives were the high prices and the overall experience. If I could sum up this store in one word I would say"cold". A very cold experience in many ways. I recommend the more intimate and polite frame shops. read more

Top notch! I've had several pieces framed here over the years and they always do exquisite work. I splurged for the museum glass for a very special piece and it was well worth it. My husband is an artist and, when he doesn't frame his own work, he brings it to PPF. I had to have some pieces framed for my church and PPF suggested the perfect frame: one that was discounted so it was within our budget but still had some interest to it and went perfectly with the prints. I've had great experiences with all of the friendly, helpful, kind employees I've worked with here. They even donated framing to my children's school auction, which I thought was extremely generous. Are they the cheapest framing store? No, but they offer an outstanding product and service at a fair price. I'll be a loyal customer for life! read more

The sales woman that helped me was chatty and helpful but the overpriced mediocre framing was a disappointment. The custom work done for me was just so-so (reminiscent of work from Michael's craft store), and it cost me a fortune. You can get decent framing at any of the other Rhode Island frame shops, including American Picture Frame (a bit of a hike to West Warwick, but decent, reasonably priced framing) or Picture This. I should have done my homework before spending a small fortune at this frame factory. At least I know better for the future. read more

One of the worst experiences I've ever had. I took a piece of expensive original artwork to be framed here and sorely regret it. First, the women at the front counter all seemed to have an attitude and dismissed my framing and matt suggestions. Second, I could hear the owner yelling at and demeaning his employees. Third, they charged me an outrageous amount for a simple frame and matt job. Finally, and worst of all, they lie about their services. I specifically requested conservation glass and acid-free backing and was repeatedly assured that it was their policy to use those materials. Well, several months after I got my artwork home, it faded. I had a local framer take the frame apart and found regular cardboard had been used for backing and the glass was just ordinary glass. The back of the artwork also showed some mishandling. Never again. Providence Picture Frame may be the biggest and oldest game in town but it's also be the worst. read more
