I had a really great time at their Saturday night cooking class which started at 7:30. This was…read moresupposed to be a French date night which consisted of making French chicken and French pastries. Wendy was our instructor and she taught the class. I will say that she's very patient and kind. The only feedback I could offer to her is to allow more of us to do more hands-on stuff in the beginning of the class. I do understand that she's teaching us how to use the instruments in the kitchen, but the point of the classes is to be interactive, and many of us spent 30 minutes in being in the class just watching which was essentially a waste of time because my philosophy is that you should be doing instead of watching. Now in terms of the chicken, the cooking process was long. It took around 1 1/2 hours to make the dinner which was all right, but most of us were hungry by the end. I will say the class was worth it for the French pastry. We made profiteroles which was super fun and a lot of us really loved it. The dinner was not very filling though and the class did not have enough chairs for us to sit down when we were going to eat our food. Many of the participants in the class were elderly in this required them to be standing up for 3 to 4 hours, which was very intense even for me. All in all, it's a very good concept, but I will say that they need to be more prepared to handle a large class volume, and they need to allow us to do more hands-on stuff instead of us watching, especially since we're paying money to learn how to cook!

The first cooking class was Latin steak night where we made steak with chimichurri and gelato for dessert. The second cooking class was crabcake with steak and garlic aïoli with oven roasted asparagus and chocolate lava cake. It was such a delicious meal. And she is a fantastic instructor. I've signed up for my third class and can hardly wait. As for the store itself, the staff are really nice. I've purchased a number of items here. If you take a cooking class you also get 10% off in the store which I took advantage of. They have a beautiful selection of just about everything you would ever need for your kitchen and serving goods. What's not to like about that?

No matter the time of year I love visiting Downtown Home & Garden. My previous review stated, "I love any store where I can get tulip bulbs, a new bird house, a winter hat shaped like a Christmas tree, a new cookie sheet and a loaf of Zingerman's bread" and all that still rings true. But these days I also add national parks merch, gear for my dogs, holiday decor, kitchen gadgets and cookbooks and, perhaps most exciting for a Polish broad like myself, a variety of Polish pottery pieces. In the spring and summer months I can be found perusing peony bulbs for my garden, hummingbird feeders, bird seed and squirrel proof bird feeders, planters, plants/starters for my veggie garden, pest control and fertilizers, plus a variety of lawn decor and sculpture pieces, etc. Some things can be kind of pricey but you truly get what you pay for. Even after years out in the elements everything I've bought for my yard here is still in amazing condition, my plants from here always yield the most delicious fruits and veggies, and the little birdies are so happy with the snacks we provide them from their bins.

I found a countertop and asked questions about veining because the countertops that I picked out had veins. First off the guy came to measure the countertops and they were cut two short and they gave us a hard time about that and then to tell me that I could have my contractor fill in the holes. Second I decided to use the countertops as back splashes and again asked the question about the veins matching. They told me they would match. Not the case at all. When they came to install for a second time the veins do not match the backsplashes after I was told they would. They claimed they never said this which is not true and told me that I had buyers remorse. For a $10,000 job they are doing sloppy work and do not care about the customers. I had asked about a discount because now I have to live with ugly countertops that do not match and will only receive a 5% discount which is nothing. The owner does not care about his customers and only cares about his money. Buyers beware of this place. Also when you walk into the shop the staff look miserable as they never have smiles on their faces, it's like they can't be bothered to get up to help you. Buyers beware of this place.
