I have changed my rating for this company from 1 star to 3 stars. After I contacted the Better Business Bureau, Protection One did the responsible and customer focused thing and rescinded the $100 fee they charged me for canceling their service. I wish I could give them a higher rating as the service itself was quite good for the 3 years I was with them. Unfortunately, the hassle they put me through and the couple of bad customer service calls I experienced near the end soured my appreciation for this company. To any potential customers: I urge you to check the fine print on the contract and ask at your sales pitch if they have an auto-renew policy. Do not sign if they do. It's a shady business practice designed to keep you from ever leaving them. Their competitors don't do it; they go month-to-month once you complete your agreement. read more

We hired Protection One to install our new home security system. We looked at Brinks and ADT as well. Brinks was much more expensive and not really willing to bend on anything...they're just a large corporate so what do you expect. ADT has terrible customer service...I know this because they provided the security system for my company. The folks from Protection One are really easy to work with. They are focused on making customers happy, they work quickly and explain everything along the way, and they work with you to give you a security system that you need at a great price. I've had Protection One alarm system in my home for about 8 years. I am very happy with them. I just recently had an issue with my Cox land line which connects with my Protection One box, and then a few days later the cell backup on the system. I called them today and they came out today!! Not only did they replace the cell backup and the battery, but the technician that came out also fixed my land line!!! He really was not responsible for the land line but wanted to get it working for me. I have to say, for the 8 years I've had them they've been great. I get a call from Protection One if my BF comes over and forgets to turn off the system after he comes in the house. I used to have ADT and they were pretty good too. But Protection One is superb!! read more

I have had Protection1 since 1996 and this is my third home with them. They make me feel safe and cared for - and I appreciate that! This time they sent Matthew Dixon to our home for the installation. Fortunately, they could use the pre-wired connections the previous owner had on the windows and doors. I was happy to hear they could use the existing equipment. They are sure to grant returning (moving) customers a great deal to pick the service back up. Matthew was super professional and friendly. He knew just what to do and even installed a new second key pad for us. Their technology just keeps getting better and better! If you need a security system, they are the best!! Shortly after the installation we had a snafu and Matthew came right back and located a wire that had come loose somehow. DON"T SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE!!! Please make sure to read your contract they will lock you into a LOONG contract that you cannot get out of! Then when you call to cancel they leave you on hold forever and There are a lot of cheaper alternatives out there make sure to do your due diligence before signing up with a company who's out to get you. read more

I have been calling them since March asking for assistance from a manager- no reply - I just got through to the regional manager- it is very demeaning to be treated this way- let's see if he helps- I asked for one additional sensor in February - they had the gall to charge me $200 - I was not told the price prior to installation. I feel they came to my house, looked around- then set the price.......The sensor is a piece of junk plastic box that they paid a nickel for in china. no wiring. The zone was never added to my keypad and there is no light so I cant tell if it is even operational- maybe its just a 200.00 white plastic box? read more

HORRIBLE! SCAM!! HORRIBLE! 40 people working in the Cancellation department, just there to pursue the scam. Never worked! Setup with a wireless system and the signal kept dropping and the alarm kept going off in the middle of the day. We did have one service man come over but it was never fixed. We attempted to cancel. They virtually laughed. You have a contract for 5 years. Said we could cancel for $750, even though we never signed a contract and they could never produce a signed contract. We finally paid the $750 to save our credit after only 2 months of non-functional service. Even after paying the $750 it took over 2 months to send us a confirmation of the cancellation after many follow-up call and excuses. read more

If I could give this company zero stars I would. Such a huge mistake using Protection one. We had them for a year in our home had some issues with the alarm dropping reception and trying to charge us for things we shouldn't have been charged for. I called to ask questions and the charges were dropped. We ended up moving and wouldn't allow us to move our alarm even though they have a portable option. They wanted us to sign an even longer contract then the one we were already in. Over 3 years! Absolutely insane. Customer service could care less and are so rude. Didn't give any options but to cancel and pay them $750. read more

1. They forget to tell you that the price on the contract doesn't include the labor which is several hundred dollars more. 2. You find out that the alarm can be going off for 45 min before they will notify anyone. 3. The cellular connection is not real time. 4. Had a fire 6ft from the smoke detector , and the alarm never went off. Please read the Class Action Law Suit against Protection One, and the other BBB complaints about this company. read more

Had appt 8-12 and he showed after 1:00. No call or email to advise of delay. Spent over an hour and then said he wasn't trained to do this repair. He phoned office to have them reschedule for 8 a.m. next business day. No one showed up at proper time and when I called them I was told they were working on finding some tech for me. This is terrible service. I think since merging with ADT Protection One is just not giving the service they used to. I believed they have grown too large and feel they don't have to give the good service protection one has always given. This is a shame since I've been a customer of protection one for more than 20 years. I will now begin looking for a new company so sad. read more

I had Protection 1 for almost 5 years and never had a problem with them till I went to cancel service. Apparently even after your 3 year agreement the contract auto renews without signature or notice so don't bother with the contract terms as you will always be under contract with them. After 5 years I still owed a "early termination fee"...I will never do business with them or ADT again. read more

They are the worst...... I had them for three years switched to AHS, who was then bought by Protection One... Do yourself a favor, find someone else. The second time that I used them I paid 3 years in advance for a discount, which is fine, but if you ever have to cancel (even after your contract) they make it so hard... I wasted hours and hours both time had had there service... Also, their monitoring is not even that good. The second time I had service they did not even notify me that my phone line was out (part of their contractual obligation). It was out because I moved. I wasted thousands of $ on them. I sill have not been able to cancel this second time around (i have been trying since June! and my account is paid in full until February 2009!!!) DO NOT USE THEM! read more

I strongly advise against using Protection 1. I was a decades long customer. It started with a break-in where my alarm did not go off. They claimed they were not responsible because I did not have break sensors but it was not picked up by my motion sensors. In addition to spending $1,800 on sensors after the break-in and then asking for consideration for a later move, there were too many fruitless emails/calls where they would not budge or accommodate any discount for a long time customer. Their reps can only work from a script and I kept escalating to the next level and could not make any difference. I still had to pay $170 to cancel my contract. This is after many, many years of being a customer. The promise of free equipment is meaningless. Most companies do that. It is the monthly monitoring that they get you. After extensive research, I finally found a local company that has worked out great. Bulwark Security is who I switched to. Outstanding customer service, negotiated a reasonable monitoring rate, and the installation was perfect. Their tech came at 7:30a sharp to accommodate my schedule. Protection 1 gives wide ranges only M - F from 9a - 5p. I guarantee you, this is not an emotional review based on limited experience. I have worked with many companies that are very happy to give discounts and good service for longtime, committed customers. Protection 1 is not one of those companies. I suggest they change or they will have to close their doors. The market is moving to self installation and better equipment. I still wanted to have the work done by a company and have local monitoring so do it yourself isn't for me. read more

We didn't have a very good experience with Protection One: Emergency calls are made after 6 PM, so when our system wouldn't arm at 7:30 AM, I had to wait for a Service Technician to arrive at 7:30PM. They "only do new installations during the day, as that is where they make their money", we were told. We had to do part of the work for the installation, digging an underground 12" deep trench from the house to the garage... this wasn't in the original contract quote. The Service Manager insisted on it, when he came to measure for the material list a few day prior to the installation. They forgot to install the smoke detector, and had to return to do that. Both the Service Manager and the Service Technician were insulting. After signing a contract with them, we felt that the service and response to an alarm (TEN minutes for the Call Center to respond!) were not important to them. We have had protection one for two years now. Tonight our alarm was trigged and protection one failed us! An employee at Protection One called our house and we were not home. She left a message on our answering machine and then cleared the call noting that she made contact with us and that she was given our secret passcode. The fact is we were not home, we did not answer our phone and they were suppose to contact us on our cell phone and then contact police if they could not reach us. None of that happened, and lucky for us it was a false alarm. But is that the kind of company you want protecting your family? read more

We have been with Protection One since 1998. We have never had one problem and know that our home is being monitored the way they advertise. Al from Protection One tended to a service call recently. Protection One stinks. The system on our store was completely out and they didn't even know it. I walked into the store during and electrical outage and the battery was dead even thought he system was only six months old. Our security system was totally dead and Protection One didn't know it. Another time our motion sensor was not working and it showed up as normal. Buy a self install system with monitoring for a fraction of the cost but you will have to wait to the end of your Protection One contract because they lock you in for five years with no cancellation means.
