Extremely disappointing ending to what should have been a very special day…read more My husband and I were celebrating our 60th birthdays, and our daughter planned a surprise gathering for us at Cooling Pond. We had absolutely no idea anything was planned. We walked in and were completely surprised to see our family and friends waiting for us. It meant so much to us, and we were having a wonderful afternoon. Our group was small and everyone was purchasing drinks and supporting the food truck. For approximately the first two hours, we essentially had the indoor space to ourselves. Even later in the afternoon, there were only a few other groups and plenty of open tables and available space. From what I personally observed, no one was waiting for a table and our group was not lingering or preventing other paying customers from having somewhere to sit. That is why I was so confused when things suddenly changed toward the end of our celebration. Our tables began being cleared even though members of our group were still there, still drinking purchased beverages, and still paying customers. Personal decorations and belongings were being moved, koozies were removed from glasses, and unfinished drinks were being cleared. Things then became extremely uncomfortable between Lori Pope, the co-owner/event coordinator, and our daughter. I did not personally witness every moment of their interaction, so I will only speak to what I know. I saw how upset our daughter and family became, and several relatives who were present told me they witnessed Lori repeatedly aggressively poking/touching our daughter during the confrontation. What had been such a happy celebration ended with everyone quickly gathering our belongings and leaving because we no longer felt welcome. Only afterward did I learn that our daughter had contacted Cooling Pond months in advance, spoken directly with co-owner John about the gathering, and followed up in writing. Lori then messaged me directly afterward, stating that she hadn't known about our gathering and describing what happened between herself and John as a "total miscommunication." Whatever communication problem occurred between the owners was internal to their business. It should never have resulted in our family of paying customers being treated this way. To make the ending even more upsetting, two personal commemorative glasses from our birthday celebration were missing after our hurried departure. We contacted the brewery afterward hoping they would be found and saved for us. My husband and I live locally and had enjoyed Cooling Pond before, which makes this particularly disappointing. We weren't taking over a crowded establishment or occupying space other customers needed. We were a small group celebrating, purchasing food and drinks, and enjoying time together in a venue that had plenty of available space. I am incredibly thankful to our daughter and everyone who came to surprise us. They made our 60th birthdays very special despite how the afternoon ended. Unfortunately, after this experience, my husband and I do not plan to return. As local customers, there are too many other businesses we can support where our family will hopefully feel welcomed, appreciated, and treated with respect.

We even made a reservation days in advance, so you would think they would've been prepared for a large group, but clearly they were not. The older woman working there (I believe her name was Christina) had a very rude attitude the entire time. At one point, the staff accidentally dropped another table's food at OUR table, and after some people started eating it because we assumed it was ours, she came over yelling, "Y'all ate their food" with attitude, even though it was completely the restaurant's mistake. To make things worse, they refused to split the check for a large group, so one person had to pay while 20 people sent money through Zelle and manually calculated taxes and totals themselves. It made everything unnecessarily stressful and complicated. The food also took forever to come out, and honestly it was overpriced for food that was just okay at best. While we were still trying to figure out the bill, staff were telling us we needed to start clearing the tables. Overall, the customer service was unprofessional, disrespectful, and incredibly disappointing. I would give no stars if I could.

They tried to light a fire for us, but that was the one downfall: all the fuel was wet from recent rain I think, so the fire never really took and we just had smoke for a while and no warmth or flames to enjoy watching. But they tried! We enjoyed all the wines we sampled, and went home with one bottle. All that I tried were dry, well-bodied and smooth. My husband only found the beer so-so, so next time we go he'll probably stick to the wines that he also enjoyed from tasting my flight. The soft pretzels are huge, delicious and delivered hot and fresh. The cheese sauce for dipping them was really tasty and much better than most cheese sauce offered for soft pretzels elsewhere. The staff was very courteous, offering us blankets as it was chilly outside and they saw the fire wasn't thriving. We are only 25 minutes from them, and we'll definitely go back; we were very happy with our visit!

We weren't ordering food, just cocktails. There were four of us ready to order another round, so the business not only left us with a disappointing impression but also lost the sale of four additional drinks. If the posted closing time is 8:00 PM, I would expect drink service to continue until reasonably close to closing time. It's a shame because our bartender provided excellent service and we were really enjoying our experience up until that point.

There was a brief wait to be greeted, and a group who arrived after us was helped first. However, the bartender was clearly busy working the bar on his own, so we were patient. Once Daniel brought us menus, he made the rest of our visit a really enjoyable experience. Daniel was knowledgeable about the beer selection and helped us narrow down the sours by describing the flavors and sharing feedback from other guests. With that many choices, his guidance was much appreciated! We both started with a 16-ounce Crooked Run Fermentation Raspberry Empress on his recommendation, and it was easily the highlight of our visit. The color was a gorgeous raspberry-preserve red, and the flavor had just the right balance of acidity and tartness. It felt light and didn't leave us feeling overly full. It's now one of my favorite sours, and I would absolutely return for it! For our second round, we decided to branch out and try two Drekker sours. Daniel was upfront that he hadn't personally tasted the new arrivals yet, but he shared what other guests had said. I chose the passion fruit, orange, and guava, while my partner tried the strawberry mallow fruited sour. Mine was fragrant and fruity, almost like drinking tropical juice. It was good, but I missed the tartness of the Raspberry Empress and wished I had ordered another one. My partner really enjoyed his strawberry mallow, and after tasting it, I understood why. It had an interesting strawberries-and-cream flavor with that little sour-candy tongue tingle that makes you want another sip! We also split the jalapeño pierogi appetizer. Pierogies are usually one of my favorite things to order here, and these were tasty, with enough jalapeño kick to notice without being overwhelmingly spicy. I didn't enjoy them quite as much as I remembered from previous visits, but we still happily cleared all five from the plate. After eating, we took our canned sours to the back and played a couple of games of darts. A helpful tip for first-time visitors: ask the bartender for the darts. We didn't see a sign explaining where to get them, but a server pointed us in the right direction.
