I ordered food through Grubhub for delivery. First time ordering and have never visited the actual business. Food arrived earlier than expected and was packaged nicely. Ordered the Brussels sprouts (amazing when warm) and fried chicken meal. Loved the vegetables and chicken (crunchy and good meat). The biscuit/muffin was fine, but I could do without. The brownie was also good. I think they are known for this dessert. I ordered for lunch, and saved half of it for dinner. Would definitely order again. read more

This is a great spot to pick up a fried chicken salad or sandwich. This is probably my favorite fried chicken salad in all of Oakland. I always regret it when I try ordering something else other than the salad. It's so good! There is a lot of depth to it with the kale and mint leaf combo. Also the salad dressing topping it all off is fabulous! The purpose of this review is just to convey my love for this salad. The online ordering process was super easy. The space itself is a little cramped, but it's not bad if you order ahead and are only in the shop for pickup. There are typically a lot of people in the small space waiting for their food. I've always had good luck with ordering ahead. It's always been there ready and waiting before my scheduled pick-up time. In, pay, out, and then on to the coffee shop next door. The experiences here can get a little inconsistent with their other food items, but you can always count on their salad to hit the spot! And (most of the time) their fried chicken sandwich too. I would recommend giving this place a try if you're gluten-free as well! read more

Great Fried Chicken Sandwich, comes with tasty chips. Food came fairly fast and plenty of tables available. Only thing is lighting fixtures need to be cleaned! read more

I don't know who this restaurant is for? The food comes out cold and the portions are small. I ordered the chicken entree and while the flavor and the chimichurri sauce was really good, the portion was so small I would need more than double to feel satisfied. My biscuit was cold as soon as it came out. My friend ordered the wings and the wings were cold too. Also the gluten free option was a nice consideration, but not worth it for the cold food. We will not be returning here unfortunately. read more

Absolutely wonderful chicken soup. This restaurant and their people are wonderful they went out of their way to deliver chicken soup to my family member after a stressful medical procedure. Their caring and soup made her and her family so happy. Thank you Angela PERICOLA for arranging this and being so wonderful. read more

Friendly service. Fast and easy to pop in. Skip the biscuits: more like a corn bread and dense and very small. read more

Went here for dinner with a friend. The menu was simple, but a bit complicated. Ended up with the fried chicken plate and a side of potato wedges and a root beer. Small dining area inside and also a bit stuffy, but that's okay. Seeing the 3 pieces of chicken at first seemed a bit too little. It fills you up. Nice crunch on the outside. They're pretty dense on the inside. If you could choose which pieces, I'd choose 2 thighs and a leg or something. The breast was way too dry. The jalapeno ranch sauce that came with it on the side did help though. The cornbread muffin was nice. The little tomato and cucumber salad reminded me of one you'd get at a Mediterranean spot and it cleansed your palate. Overall, not bad. Just the dry piece of chicken could have made this better. Willing to try the other menu items like their wings though. read more

These folks make a really good chicken sandwich on a soft bun. Mildly Peppery Cole slaw in the sandwich is a perfect complement. Freshly Homemade herb fries seal the deal and the value. Compliments to the quietly competent management supervising a smooth operation. read more

I was excited by the idea of gluten-free fried chicken, but disappointed by how dry it was...

I'd rate Proposition Chicken as "pretty good" based on the sample size of the one chicken sandwich I just ate. The closest analog that can be made to it is Burger King's original chicken sandwich, not the hand breaded thing they're advertising the crap out of now. This is not a derogatory statement - I have always loved Burger King's original chicken sandwich. The lightly toasted Amoroso rolls that they put it on are a nice touch, and the slaw is just a bit spicy but not at all challenging. The ordering process is smooth and well-managed and everything seems to go according to plan, so they've got that part down. read more

My go to was the "fake" sandwich which was fried tofu with slaw. I'd always get it vegan and gluten free with wedges but they no longer offer vegan/gluten free potato wedges or fries. The owner reached out to me a few minutes ago letting me know their supplier changed the potato wedges and now the coating has gluten. He said they're seeking alternative options and can't offer vegan fries anymore due to limited space. I appreciate the prompt response from the owner and will probably eat there still even though I can't have fries since he took the time to explain the situation which is rare these days. read more

Tried this place the other day with my husband, and I loved it! They have chicken sandwiches and salads, or you can get the strips. Their food was fresh and tasty. The service was great also, we got our food so fast even though the place was packed when we got there. Also, they had the best ranch I've ever had, it's so good, definitely going back here again. Gotta try the strips and Brussel sprouts next time. read more

What a great find! TY to the previous reviewers who led us here. Almost anything here except the biscuits and rosemary potatoes can be gluten free. The flipped (rotisserie) chicken was the best - juicy and flavorful. The gf fried chicken was okay, but clearly was cooked much earlier and reheated. It was a bit tough. Fries are delicious as is the house ranch they are served with. Cucumber and tomato side bring something virtuous to the party. read more

Let's keep this one short and sweet. The food is not bad. It was interesting how the batter on the fried chicken made me feel like like I was eating fried fish but it was chicken. The fries weren't bad either. Nothing super crazy. The cashier was sweet and made me smile. Good spot for something quick. -- I could always eat read more

Jamie W. and I were familiar with Proposition Chicken from the original Market Street location which had been around for a while. I liked their tripartite Fried/Flipped/Fake menu when it came to preparing their poultry (or in the case of Fake, tofu). So when we saw their Lakeshore Avenue location on our extended Lake Merritt stroll, we decided to have lunch there knowing we could get hearty salads here. We're Flipped kind of guys. No fried chicken for us, and tofu seemed just wrong. We both ordered the $11.95 Flipped Salad, a robust bowl of kale, romaine, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, mint, shredded parmesan, and shards of free-range slow roasted rotisserie chicken. All good but it was way overdressed in their black pepper parmesan dressing (photo: http://bit.ly/2TORZ4c). Bummer. Maybe we should have gone for Fake. FOOD - 3 stars...good ingredients but should've had the dressing on the side AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...typical fast food set-up SERVICE - 3 stars..a bit on automatic pilot TOTAL - 3 stars...Is this what they mean by flipping the bird? Working from home and in dire need of a fried chicken salad? Say no more. I usually get the chicken salad with extra chicken. It comes out to 11-12 ounces of fried chicken. Nice. Usually the chicken is decent, but once in a while it's a bit overcooked and dry (which is why one star off). In those cases, it was probably sitting with a heat source too long. Big fan of the salad overall. The vinaigrette lifts up the salad and provides good acidity. The mixed greens with diced cucumbers and halved cherry tomatoes are usually good quality. All the ingredients work well as a pretty tasty salad. Shaved Parmesan on top, although it's not fresh and seems like store-bought preshaved Parmesan. Little things would've brought this one star higher. Parking is a little annoying if you're dining in or picking up; I just park in the Trader Joe's garage if I do that. Staff is usually friendly whenever I'm there. Good spot for a quick fried chicken salad! That's the only thing I've gotten, so that's all I can comment on. :) read more

Being one of the few places open for food delivery Sunday night, I decided to give it a go. I was torn between getting the salad and the sandwich, but soon realized I have salad in the fridge haha. Go figure. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich without mayo. I hate mayo but expected the sandwich to be dry with it missing. WRONG. I think the slaw is mixed with oil, taking away from any dryness I thought I'd be experiencing. The sage fries were pretty good. My sandwich was a decent size, and I saved the other half for later. I wish there were more fries, but I'm greedy with fries. I look forward to giving Proposition Chicken another try when everything is back to normal. It's good and flavorful. EDIT: My salad at home went bad and the stores are closed. The fried chicken salad is so delicious. Perfect amount of dressing and chicken. Flavorful and lemony with a nice touch of cubed cucumbers. Such a fresh eat. read more

I've been having some fried chicken cravings lately and it so happened that proposition chicken was nearby. I ordered the entrée meal which had three pieces of fried chicken, a tomato cucumber salad, and a biscuit (I substituted the biscuit for some of their sage fries.) The whole meal cost around $15. I got the order to go but I wanted to try a little bit since it was hot and fresh. The drumstick was hot and juicy, had good flavor, and was elevated with some dashes of their signature hot sauce. The sage fries with the malted mayo were good, but a little sparse. Didn't get much of the sage flavor either. The chicken is good -I'm just not sure if it's worth how expensive it is. read more

I stopped by Proposition Chicken while visiting my family in the area. While walking to a nearby store my honey & I smell some chicken frying along the shopping area and my Uncle's girlfriend mentions Proposition Chicken and it's been getting a lot of business since come to the Lake Merritt area. My honey couldn't resist the smell and so she decided on on some chicken. We walk in and a young man greets us. I menu is along the wall and you can order entree A which is a Sandwich the comes which homemade Sage chips and Slaw, Entree B is a Salad and Entree C is Chicken with Tomato Cucumber salad. I place the order and ordered Entree C you can have it made 3 ways... Fried, Flipped which is roasted and fake which is fried Tofu. I order fried which comes with 3 pieces of chicken the parts of the chicken you'll get is half a breast, Leg and a thigh, cucumber salad and a Honey biscuit.I substituted the Tomato Cucumber salad for fries which I though was odd that it's a $1 extra considering they're the exact same price my total was about $16 which I though is a bit steep for what's offered, but since I wasn't eating it the verdict was still out if the taste and quality of the food is worth the price. They do offer free range chicken as well for a extra premium piece of $0.95 per piece. Everything is made fresh to order and there is seating if you want by eat here, but I noticed mostly everyone placed inside orders and online orders to go. I finally receive my order and when we get back to then to my and she finally eats she said, the chicken is good the chicken has good flavor and fried nice and golden and crispy. She said, the fries are nothing special, but would rather have fries over the tomato cucumber salad. So, I was is worth the price and she said, yes! So, I was content with her answer. I noticed the Honey biscuit didn't look like a biscuit at all, but of a muffin. Proposition chicken is vegan friendly you do only get one entree option however, many of the side are mostly of some sort of vegetable. I suppose I'd come back if my honey wants chicken. I had to reduce a star because I still don't understand the up charge for plain fries and the cucumber salad is the exact same price! I was expecting the sage fries since that would have been a dollar more. Oh, well it is what it is. Oh yeah, they do have a dessert called a Magic bar. It's at the registers it didn't look all that appealing to me as it looked dry. read more

Had a positive experience here. I enjoy their bone broth as a starter, hot and soothing. Then I tore into some fine fried chicken (dark meat preferred) and a nice tomato and cucumber side dish. The cashier was very friendly. The order came out so fast I should have suspected it might not be fresh. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with sage fries. The chicken was so hard I could not bite it. It was very tough and hard. See photo s. The fries were cold and hard but probably would have been delicious if freshly cooked. The best part was the coleslaw on the sandwich and the bread was fresh. I will never understand why employees give old food out. I never mind waiting if the food is going to be properly cooked. They are a knock off of another chicken sandwich sold by a lady named Bet_y, on Telegraph. I have never had a tougher piece of chicken! Very disappointing. If I had time I would have asked for a replacement order. Instead I went back to work still hungry... They owe me a do over....I think it could have been great if not cooked so hard and old fries served. read more

WHEN: weekdays normally This is probably my new fav lunch spot in Oakland. It's right next to chipotle. I've tried the prop chicken outside of the ghost kitchen space in Walnut Creek. This locations chicken sandwich tastes so much better and more fresh. The interior decor was all chicken paintings, it was very visible as you walk in. There are indoor seatings, water dispenser, cups, napkins. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. It gave a very positive vibe that I was gunna have an awesome Workday. WHAT I ORDERED Honey mustard Chicken wings It was delicious. It gets very messy with the sauce wings, nevertheless eat it with hands. It tastes better. It came with celery, carrots and ranch. Chicken sandwich w chips My bf liked this sandwich a lot better than the Walnut Creek location. The chicken was well cooked, served hot, rosemary chips are absolutely tasty and addicting af. I keep craving for me. Next time I'll get rosemary chips As a side. read more

Wow- I can't believe this place is only ranked 3 stars, it has to be one of the largest gaps between what I experienced myself in my entire time Yelping! There are a lot of chicken sandwich places out there, so what makes their stand out - my list goes as follows 1) the chicken was really brined and you can taste that in its moisture 2) lots of flavorful slaw with a nicely baked soft hogie bread 3) the sides OMG - the chicken broth soup was out of world. So in summary again, please try this place. read more

i've been here many times & took a couple of years away thinking they would improve their portion sizes & quality... nope, everything is still dry (dry chicken is one thing, but how can you serve a dry biscuit??) and small for the cost. there are better options on lakeshore, including the to-go section of trader joe's. hell, even a microwaved sandwich from peet's; at least you know what you're getting. read more

I love the interior decorations, and the staff was great, but the food was lacking. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and it was a little too crispy for my liking. It was above average on flavor, but the crispiness was hard to overcome and the bun was kinda meh. The fries that come with the sandwich were good, and you could tell they were freshly made (crispy, but slightly soft). The chicken tenders were good (I thought they were better than the sandwich) but you only get three small strips for like $8 and it doesn't come with a side. And they have lots of hot sauces to choose from which was awesome. The fries were ok, but the rosemary(?) or some other seasoning was a bit overpowering. Overall the food was ok, the interior was very nice, and the service was good. There are a lot of other restaurants right on the same street that I'd like to try, but if I'm ever craving chicken I might come back! read more

I do not know why it has taken me a long time to try this eatery. I had the entree order which came as a three-piece set-up with a side of their cucumber salad, sweet biscuit, and signature sauce. I really thoroughly enjoyed the chicken because it was crispy and well-seasoned. The batter they use I liken to fish-and-chips because it's airy and flaky. The biscuit was good too, but the cucumber salad was underseasoned. I will definitely be back! read more

I was here a few days ago just passing through town and decided to stop by and try out this place. Worst idea ever! My husband and I ordered 2 fried chicken sandwiches, 1 cola coca and 1 lemonade. Our total was about $35. I had asked for dine in but changed my mind to, to go instead. We drove off already only to realize that our order was wrong. We got the fried salad instead of sandwiches and there were no utensils for the salad either. So we had to come back for some utensils because we didn't have the time to wait for our correct order.
