One of our favorite hidden gems, Proper is a go-to for fresh baked meat pies that will last you all week long. Stock up on the sausage rolls and heat them up for breakfast all week. Easily the best British baked goods in DFW. It may be the only British baked goods, but luckily it's the best! The chicken masala pot pie is fantastic. The right Amount of curry that doesn't hit you like a brick, yet still has flavor. The pie crust is wonderful. Flakey, buttery, yet still has texture. The meat is tender, and not stringy. Goes pretty well with Cajun mustard. The sausage roll is quite the punch in spiced meat. The breading base in wonderful like everything else. Easily a crowd pleaser. The spinach cheese pastry is buttery, soft, and a great combo of cheeses and starches. Reminds me of a pierogi filling wise. The Cornish pastry is quite dense in breading. The filling is quite starchy with it being comprised of mostly potato. Although it was my least favorite item, it was still pretty good. The scotch egg is as good as it was the last time I had it. My only regret is it doesn't have a semi runny yolk. I understand it would be hard for the owner to do that, but I'm just being picky. read more

I can't say enough good things about Tina and her company. I ordered an assortment of pasties, Victoria sponge and a Bakewell tart to have while watching the Queen's funeral. We picked up our order the day before and followed her warming instructions. Everything was fresh and so delicious. No one does a sponge as well as she does. We went there a couple of weeks ago. we searched around a bit until we found them on the outskirts of the shed, but were glad we did. The only downside to their location is that I wish there were a place to heat the meat pies up right there! They are better warm than cold. By the way, the prices are really affordable for what you get. We got some of the Cornish Pasties, and they were like flavor dynamite. Man, I wish I could make a crust like that! It was perfect. A little too much onion (or leek perhaps?) for my taste but incredibly flavorful. We also got a couple of those little Victoria sandwiches, and they are so decadent! Oh my goodness!! Perhaps it's a good thing they are downtown, and not in Carrollton, though perhaps they could do one of their pop up events there, maybe??? Can't wait to try more of their wares. So good! read more

Seriously, ~seriously~ good meat pies - and they are PACKED with meat, I'm guessing at least 1/2 pound. I don't know how Tina can offer that much quality protein at her price point. For a 'sure thing', look for pies and pasties with 'gravy' in the description. The chicken pot pie (curry or plain) is wonderful, but not like American with loads of veggies and cream sauce. These are packed with tender chicken. Sooo good. The sweets we like best are the Bourbon Biscuit (rich chocolate taste), and the strawberry and lemon dodgers. We enjoyed the mince pie, but be aware that it's in true British fashion, with primarily chopped raisins and maybe currents. For best enjoyment, follow the heating instructions, and serve with tea, of course! They were truly meant to be served with hot tea. We buy an assortment of meat pies, heat, then cut each in half to share to get the best variety. I haven't figured out how to heat the sausage rolls to get the pastry flaky again, but the flavors are very nice. All in all, excellent quality baked goods. One of a kind! Definitely worth the drive to go pick them up if you aren't on the delivery route. read more

I had some Proper Baking Company product last week (11/8/17) at What's on Tap Keller. I had, and enjoyed, the the Cheese, Potato and Onion Pasty ($6). Paired very nicely with the darker brew I was drinking. Only one complaint, no sauce. I was thinking a splash of HP Sauce would of been great, but if it was there, I didn't see it (and, to my own fault, did not ask). If you crave solid British classics, then this is just the bakery to satisfy you. If you can't make it down to the Dallas Farmers Market on the weekends, stop by Drugstore Cowboy or Noble Rey brewery. Everything you can dream of from meat pies, pasties, sausage rolls, hot cross buns, victoria sponge, melting moments, the list goes on and on. Most importantly they are always consistent. Every thing that I have had from them is spot on and authentic. You may even be able to grab some HP sauce or tomato sauce to throw on your sausage roll. Ventured out to "The Shed" part of the Dallas Farmer's Market on a frigid Friday. I was disappointed to only see a few stands open, but that gave me a chance to really peruse each stall and their offerings. The Proper Baking Company was one of the only vendors who was bracing the wind and the cold. Her displays were filled with beautiful pastries and snacks: scotch eggs, meat pies, Cornish pasties, and scones. I decided on a raspberry, white chocolate scone. It was honestly a top-notch scone. It was huge, had a nice crispy exterior, and fluffy, tender inside. Not too sweet, but just right. And it was only $3! read more

Tina is fantastic! Definitely the best British food in Dallas. To date, I've tried the pasties, mushroom and thyme pie and bakewell tarts (I don't think you can get bakewell tarts anywhere else in the metroplex). I'm looking forward to trying the scones next but I need to pace myself. read more

After missing savory pies from home for years, I am in heaven now. Tried the Sausage Roll while there and it was lovely. We took home a selection of goodies for tea later. The Cornish Pasty was amazing, the Steak and Ale pie was delicous and I can't wait to try the Steak and Kidney pie and the Pork Pie when I go back for more. My absolute favorite was the Bakewell Tart. Had it with a cup of tea and meant to save half for the next day...it went in one sitting. read more

Hit and miss here. I heard about Tina and her baked goods from a friend who's originally from the UK. My hubby is always looking for a taste of home so as soon as I knew I could get down to the "Farmer's Market" I ordered ahead (yes, it's in quotes because there's not one bit of it you can call a farmer's market anymore...they really need to change the name to "Hipster Paradise"). Anyhoo, I ordered him a pork pie and a steak and kidney pie. I also ordered a couple of blueberry scones and a couple of mini Victoria sponges. I was most eagerly anticipating the Victoria sponges. Fell in love with that lovely thing when we were in the UK and can't find any here (spoiler alert - still can't). When I picked up the order I also grabbed a Cornish pasty for the road. The pasty was good, but could've been a bit better. The pastry itself was really good but the filling, though plentiful, was lacking in great flavor, plus the beef was really gristly. The scones were ok but disintegrated as soon as I tried to put some butter on them. The flavor was a LOT like Bisquick buscuits. Hubby proclaimed both meat pies to be lovely with a good crust, though he said he wished the steak and kidney pie had some gravy inside. The saddest moment was the much-anticipated Victoria sponge. The cake was very dense and very, very dry. Tasted nice enough though. The jam, though good, was nearly nonexistent. The cream was horrible and pretty much inedible - and there was way too much of it. It tasted like it was about 90% powdered sugar and some fake cream - like the inside of an Oreo, only much harder and denser. Great if you love Oreos, but not great for this. I had two bites of the cream and trashed the rest. I'm actually still pretty sad about this. I wanted to try this in the hopes of getting a full-sized one for my birthday, so unless Tina's full sized Victoria sponge is completely different I guess I'll have to end this fruitless search and just make my own damn birthday cake. *sob* We'd come back for the savory pies, as well as try other savory offerings, but I'll think twice about the sweets. read more

My wife drags me from Las Colinas to the Dallas Farmer's market at least once a month to get some of the terrific goodies from Tina at Proper Baking Company located in the outdoor shed. Why? Here's why... you won't find anything else like this in Texas. It's authentic British delights fashioned in the wonderful Lincolnshire style. One of my favorites is a lard crust like you've never had for the wonderful pies, and the steak and ale pasty. She actually brings back ingredients when travels to Britain. This time she brought their Cadbury Creme eggs and made a chocolate Scotch Egg with a coconut outer shell. We also got a cake wrapped in some special marzipan she just brought back from the other side of the pond. We picked up a pair of hot crossed buns too. It's not just sweets, she is a true chef so she also makes wonderful savory dishes, such as her popular sausage wraps. She makes her own sausage and it's yummy! She also uses the sausage to make savory Scotch eggs! During Thanksgiving she started making a turkey pie with cranberry in it. It's so popular she's about to start making it again, so ask her about them. The portions are perfectly sized and the prices are fair. She does do delivery too! read more

I am in love. I haven't had proper British savory pastries since going to England as a kid and ever since then I've always wanted to try them again. I also am obsessed with the Great British Bake Off and was super delighted to see some of the show's cookbooks at their stand. I'm sensing a fellow fan! We preordered which I think is the way to go as it looks like they sell out quickly. We got: - Shepherds pie pastry This was my favorite. Huge portion perfect for 2 people. I was excited to see this stall at the downtown farmer's market. I really enjoy savory pies/pastries and based on the articles and reviews peppered around the table, I was expecting some decent meals from the three pastries I bought. The Cornish pasty was alright, but could have used a little more meat (the meat was also a bit tough). The steak and ale pie was way too salty to the point I was only able to eat two bites. I will say that filling was nice and tender and that (for both pastries) the crust was very good. I also purchased the pork pie and am hoping it redeems the other two for the $20 price point everything cost, but am not entirely optimistic. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but a previous reviewer lauded the consistency of the product quality so I'm not sure. If you're at the farmers market and looking for some good eats, you're probably better of spending $20 elsewhere. read more

We adore Tina. My husband and I try to go to her pop-up at Craft Beer Cellar regularly and we usually order a Scotch egg, some sort of meat pie or pasty, and a dessert. We have tried her brisket and hatch, steak and ale, and chicken curry pies, as well as her Cornish and shepherd's pie pasty. On the sweets front, we have had a melting moment, Victoria sponge cake, bourbon biscuit, and Bakewell tart. Everything we've had has been delicious. My personal favorite is the sponge cake. We are currently at four bullets brewery where they were making fish and chips. The brewery opens at 5pm. They were not ready until 6pm. They then were sold out at 630pm. We didn't get our food until 710pm. There was one giant piece of fish and giant French fries that were completely under cooked. It was very dissapointing as this is a very good brewery and this company was not prepared at all for this. I hope next time they do a little research. read more
