The staff, volunteers, and clients were so hospitable--not just to me, but to everyone I observed. The genuine care and concern shown for those receiving services was so evident. The staff and regular volunteers are invested in this community. Chester is no walk in the park, and these people choose to come in every day, build relationships, pray for the community, and serve. And they serve people with dignity. Have you heard about their Hope Cafe? In addition to serving cafeteria style meals all week long, on Saturday evenings, the space is transformed into a restaurant, the guests order from a menu, and they are served just as they would be at a restaurant. The Mother-Baby program provides families from the community with necessities they may not be able to afford on their own. Moms can get diapers, formula, clothes, diaper bags, etc. There is a recovery program for men who want to be freed from their addictions, and they do community outreach delivering meals, backpacks, turkeys, and toys. Cityteam Chester does a real good job of celebrating and sharing good news through their social media page on FB. Check them out!

They provide places for people to stay and help them find work. " I started giving $5 once in a while to Project H.O.M.E., especially in the winter time, when someone would walk into the convenience store begging for a cigarette, or buying a potato.... where I was dropping $4 for a Kombucha and you know, $5 can go a long way. They make it easy to donate online http://www.projecthome.org/donate/, so you can do it often - you don't have to hurl over $100 at a time. They also have a great website dedicated to telling you all about their work, and publish a newsletter about the people they help. Men, women and children really have a voice, and these people really care. This is a great place to do your holiday shopping. This year because of the snow (it would have cost $100 to FedEx just before the holidays), and total lack of feeling like shopping for another craptastic gift, I opted to send my family members a note that said I gave such and such amount in your honor. Project HOME shoots you an e-mail immediately, so you can gift very quickly and easily. I think my mom was mad at first, but then she really loved it, and I bet next year I'll get something similar - instead of two pounds of See's candies... ugh. These people are pros at managing volunteers…read more This is not an easy task. You have to understand first what they can learn to do in a very short period of time. Then you need to make sure they're enjoying doing it. Lastly, you need it done right. It's a skill. Philabundance clearly understands this and has the entire process mastered - from check in to departure. I arrived to work with a group of colleagues from my company. The volunteers have their own parking spaces and their own sign in and waiting area. Cleverly they have these little kiosk things that allow you to use your credit card and make an instant donation that adds to a total for your group. Nice. Tables, chairs, clear lockers for storing personal goods, heavy coats along one wall for those working in the refrigerated area. We had a brief orientation where they talked about the mission of Philabundance, then we were split into two projects. I was on a project making up food boxes for elderly people in need. They reviewed what each of us did and we were off. The boxes came along a conveyer belt and we all had stations. I kept thinking of the "I Love Lucy" episode and smiled to myself. We worked a total of 3 1/2 hours with a 20 minute break halfway through. We made up our goal of boxes - 600 - and helped the other team package pints of milk in the cooler area when we were done. Group photo on the way out, and we were leaving feeling accomplished and happy. They were professional, friendly and very organized. Impressed.

His involvement in this community, as depicted in the show, opened my eyes to his efforts, drew my attention to Philly Restart, and made me want to know what I could do to help. Philly Restart helps get quality meals to Philadelphia's homeless, as well as IDs, to help them with access to employment and housing. They meet every Monday at 4 p.m. along the Ben Franklin Parkway near 19th. (The NW corner, between City Hall and the Rocky stairs at the Art Museum). They do host visiting (drop-in) volunteers, but it helps them plan if you contact them ahead, for more info. Another worthy cause in PHL for those who have time or money to spend helping others.

They are always looking into new ways to serve others. I have gone for a tour of the facility and they have one of the largest (if not THE largest) capacity to house the homeless in Philadelphia. Their social media is always encouraging to see and I follow there instagram (phillyhomeless) to see all of the cool things that they are involved in by connecting to the community and partnering with other organizations as well. My daughters and I recently volunteered with their school at Mitzvah Circle Foundation on MLK Day…read more I was so touched by this organization which helped 45,000 people, including over 2,000 children with developmental issues last year alone. I really enjoyed not only meeting, but hearing what founder Fran had to say about her original plans for her non profit organization (which grew tremendously over the last few years), as well as their mission, and how the process exactly works. She told touching stories of those she has helped and it really inspired me to do more! I really liked knowing that our time was really needed and our donations were headed to the appropriate places. I love the fact that The Mitzvah Circle creates individualized care packages. They aim to satisfy the personal needs of each and every family/person on a one on one basis. Whether it's school supplies, outerwear, educational toys, pajamas, or sturdy shoes, they will do their best to send seasonal, correctly sized items with each package their volunteers create and deliver. They have many ways you can help... -Donating very gently used items on weekdays. Their motto for donating clothes is "if you wouldn't put it on your child or wear it, don't send it". They noted the item we bag up and send may be the nicest article of clothing they have. Good to keep in mind. It definitely makes this Mama feel a lot better about some of those pricier items we part with. They accept all sizes, all season, all genders. Shoes are definitely an item they don't have enough of! Send 'em!They ask that you call or email before dropping off so they can be sure someone can help you unload your goods. They did say email is the fastest method of communication. -Donating a monetary gift through their site. That money will be used to purchase diapers and baby soap. (They are the ONLY organization which provides diapers to families in neeed! They also send out 500 bottle of baby soap every 2 weeks!) -Volunteer. There are many days to lend a hand. I posted a photo of upcoming available dates of service. Often groups, schools and business come together and select a day to help out too! Contact them if you think you may have a larger group interested in helping out! Volunteering was rewarding and easy. They are a very organized and well oiled machine. My children ages 5&7 had no issues helping out. They really enjoyed bagging the 5 toiletry items as well seeing how fast they could help us separate the garments by size into appropriate bins. Everything was explained well and we accomplished a great deal in our 3 hour slot. I've already been bagging up some goods to take up there. If you are looking to give a bit more in whatever way you can this year, I couldn't recommend this organization any more! I was happy to be a part of it and look forward to working with them a lot more!

She gave me a tour of their warehouse where they sort and ship donations to those who need then the most but cannot afford. These include school supplies for deserving kids, shoes, toiletries, food, books, etc. I was so impressed by this kind-hearted lady and appreciate the amount of effort and dedication it takes to run such an organization. So glad to be able to chip in with what I can to help those in need through this organization.
