What was once shelves of gardening products and their unique backyard plant sales is now a lovely space with comfy chairs tables, a small kitchen and a backyard patio. Everything is accessible and sensory-friendly. The goal of this nonprofit is to bring together community members of all abilities, ages, social groups, etc. They have a broad variety of programming - everything from making your own yoga mat and painting with watercolors to cooking to tabletop gaming and movie nights. Their director is very good to work with and open to new and interesting programming that is inclusive. Groups can also rent the space for meetings such as Civic meetings and such, there is a fee if it's not an open-to-all activity. I've gone there twice for activities, and it was great both times. Highly recommend going for their activities and such. It's pretty cool.

They are no normal soup kitchen nor your average food pantry; Cathedral Kitchen is the future of nonprofit industry. A beautiful, newly constructed space, Cathedral Kitchen operates as a community center for anyone who needs a warm meal. It is open to all ages and people ages 16 and up are encouraged to volunteer to do everything but cook the food. The Kitchen is where a lot of the magic happens. CK runs a full-time culinary arts training program. About a dozen applicants out of several thousand are selected and are enrolled for a free job-placement training program. There is a 75% rate of graduates gaining employment as a chef after completing the program. The food that they cook could easily be served in a restaurant and trust me when I say you'd like it. As Chef Jon candidly told me and (I'm sure) many others: "If we won't eat it, they don't". If you would like to volunteer, you can do so between the hours of 3:30-5:30pm on weekdays and 11:30am-1:30pm on Saturdays. If you are concerned about safety: Don't be. CK has their own private security and most everyone who comes in is extremely appreciative. The last thing 99.99% of the recipients would like to do is stir up trouble because they know they won't be allowed future entry if they do so. In addition, Cathedral Kitchen offers medical care and oral surgery (provided by local professionals on a pro-bono basis). Honestly, what a great place, check it out if you would like to make a difference.

These people are pros at managing volunteers…read more This is not an easy task. You have to understand first what they can learn to do in a very short period of time. Then you need to make sure they're enjoying doing it. Lastly, you need it done right. It's a skill. Philabundance clearly understands this and has the entire process mastered - from check in to departure. I arrived to work with a group of colleagues from my company. The volunteers have their own parking spaces and their own sign in and waiting area. Cleverly they have these little kiosk things that allow you to use your credit card and make an instant donation that adds to a total for your group. Nice. Tables, chairs, clear lockers for storing personal goods, heavy coats along one wall for those working in the refrigerated area. We had a brief orientation where they talked about the mission of Philabundance, then we were split into two projects. I was on a project making up food boxes for elderly people in need. They reviewed what each of us did and we were off. The boxes came along a conveyer belt and we all had stations. I kept thinking of the "I Love Lucy" episode and smiled to myself. We worked a total of 3 1/2 hours with a 20 minute break halfway through. We made up our goal of boxes - 600 - and helped the other team package pints of milk in the cooler area when we were done. Group photo on the way out, and we were leaving feeling accomplished and happy. They were professional, friendly and very organized. Impressed.

The staff joined the YEE community virtually to introduce us to the goats and provide a background on the nonprofit's mission. Fast forward to November 2023, I finally visited Philly Goat project in person! I'd initially planned to visit the zoo on this day, but realized it had gotten too late to gain entry. Change of plans was a visit to Awbury and seeing the goats and chickens onsite! The goats are fun, and the staff is friendly and informative. If you visit and don't see the goats, check the map. It will highlight where the goats are, since they get their exercise around the grounds all day. We found the goats in a meadow area and said hello as it started to drizzle. Lots of fun!
