I really like this place. The coffee's good and not overpriced. The wraps are delicious (I recommend the roasted eggplant pesto) and a good size for the price. There's free wifi, plenty of space to sit for groups of 2-3 people, and a patio out back. The people who work there are really friendly but extremely slow with food. I've ordered food there four times, including twice when the place was completely empty, it has always taken at least 20-25 minutes to get a wrap. Three people working and no other customers? I really like this place. The menu is great with a variety of middle-eastern inspired wraps, salads, etc. I have never been disappointed with the lattes here either. The real reason for the 5-star rating is the inviting atmosphere. There are three separate seating areas -- two indoor seating areas (one in front and one in back) and an outdoor patio. All are very inviting spaces with plenty of outlets, comfortable seating, and not usually crowded. The wifi connection is free and reliable. There is seriously something wrong with one of the owners, Azis (sp?). I've been an every day customer there since 2013. He has always been a little rude like slamming my coffee cup in front of me, mocking my way of speaking with an accent, but lately he has pushed it way too far. A month ago when I was getting my coffee there, Azis came behind me, put an X-acto knife to my neck and said: "Give me all your money!" When I looked at him shocked he said: "Relax my friend. It's a joke." And walked away laughing. I told him, I'm not your friend, and if you do something like this again, I'll call the cops and have you arrested. It's completely wrong to joke with customers (or anyone for that matter), like that. Today I watched him make fun of a mentally ill (but mostly independent), person R., who comes to the coffee shop every day to buy his morning coffee. I happen to know R as he lives in my neighborhood. R. is suffering from PTSD and sometimes talks to himself quietly, but is completely harmless. When I asked Azis why he was calling R. crazy and other names, he responded: R. is my friend, I can call him whatever I want. Besides, This is my business, I can do whatever I want here. R. woke out upset muttering, "I'm not your friend." Azis is very unprofessional, rude, and way too forward with customers. Will not be returning and do not recommend. read more

Three key factors make this place worth the 5 stars: 1. The killer coffee, especially for the price - Their coffee is super strong, just the way I like it! As other reviewers have mentioned, the pricing is on the low-end of the city's coffee prices. I believe it was a buck fifty for a regular coffee and in the $2-3 range for expresso drinks. I haven't tried their tasty-looking treats, but they surely look delicious. 2. The super-friendly staff - There is one guy who is always there when I go. I keep meaning to ask his name, but it slips my mind because he distracts me with his friendly conversation (for example, why a chai tea latte is the perfect "warm me up" drink on a rainy day - he was right). What's even better is that they are ALL nice; it's not just the one guy holding down the niceness fort. 3. The cozy environment - It's seems difficult to match a nice amount of seating with comfort and style, but Progressive Grounds pulls it off. The bench seating along the wall is lined with pillows, and more importantly, plenty of outlets for some great, caffeine-fueled productivity. I went to Progressive Grounds for brunch today, I haven't been there for a long time and I normally goes there almost every day for coffee with my dog. What I have today is Greek Salad (Romaine lettuce, olives, tomato, capers, cucumber, red onion and feta cheese) included house vinaigrette (apple cider vinegar, dijon mustard, salad oil, salt and pepper) and side of pita bread with cup of single Cappucino. I forget to tell the person who took my order that with NO FETA on my salad. Sometime I get their Grilled Veggie wrap they are so good and healthy. read more

Although it is a coffee shop, the only drink I order from here with caffeine in it is an iced coffee and it is average. However, the milkshakes and smoothies here are awesome. This place was my go-to breakfast spot when I was visiting San Francisco. Great atmosphere, delicious food and drinks. I particularly liked their wide variety of breakfast bagels and sandwiches, from hummus wraps to avocado and cream cheese pumpernickel bagels. My favorite beverage there was probably their soy chai. Most places I've noticed have soy chai that is just too sweet for my taste but there's was perfect. When it's warmer there's a gorgeous garden space to eat outside and sip your coffee. I timed it that the wraps were ready for pick up when I got there and were still warm when I got home (about 15 minutes later). I always want to like this place. But than some jerk gets on their cell phone and has a long, load conversation with the billing department. The food is good and it would otherwise be a great place to read or work on ones laptop or chat with a friend. But often the back patio has multiple people having loud, stressed out cell phone conversations. For a coffee shop, they have a quite a variety to choose from on their menu, and everything we have tried has been really good. The wraps are always warm, crunchy, and incredibly hearty. Still hungry after that big 'ole wrap.... Mitchell's Ice Cream right there for you. There is a nice courtyard out back on warm days, and their back room isn't near as busy as the front (except for on weekends when a lot of people bring their kids here, which isn't a bad thing). The space is nice, the coffee is fast, the workers can speak and understand english, the bathroom is clean, aerated, with toilet seat covers, a locking door, soap, running water, and toilet paper sans being a mess. They do serve savory and sweet items and they sell artwork hanging up on the walls for big bucks. Like several other reviewers, I am surprised this place has garnered such high reviews. I came here expressly because it was so raved about, and after five minutes I feel fully justified in saying, "Come on people! Are our expectations of 'greatness' really so low???" At first glance, Progressive Grounds is definitely a cozy shelter from the cold and rain. It has that charming authentic independent coffeehouse air that peaked in the 90s and sadly slowly vanished as generic chains took over. They have an assortment of food (including some more exotic fare...big plus), free and fast wifi (~ 7Mbsp), and - for the evening crew - beer and wine. My positive impressions ended there. I asked for my standard latte, which although it does have two particularities (nonfat, decaf), it is a far cry from the "half double decaffeinated half-caf, with a twist of lemon" order from LA Story. Either way, the "professional" behind the counter looked absolutely befuddled. I repeated, and she nodded curtly. I then ventured a food order: bagel with peanut butter and banana. She told me she had never heard someone order that before and "no" I couldn't have that. "What would I do with the other half of the banana?" Look I'm no Fed Chairman, but since most places charge $1 for a banana add-on and bananas retail at the grocery store for $0.25, I'm pretty sure she could have just eaten the thing (literally or figuratively) and still profited. A wiser retailer would have realized this upgrade would have enhanced her margins. I almost attempted a Gordon Ramsey comment, but decided my time was better spent with people less impervious to suggestions from PAYING CUSTOMERS. We finally negotiated a settlement: I would buy the banana outright and cut it myself if I wanted to impose upon her with weird breakfast orders. Fine. At this point, I just wanted to get away from her. I wouldn't say she was mean, so much as shrewish. Others have similarly commented on her temperament. When she did finally bring my bagel, she forgot (or perhaps selectively chose not to remember) my banana. I had to go back to the bar and remind her. None of this normally would have put me off a place. We all have bad days. But when I had the coffee and "fully fixed up" my own bagel, they both were just okay. Not bad. But definitely not sublime. I considered trying a couple of the saran-wrapped goodies over the bar, until I picked one up and it had that tell-tale stiffness of a pastry past its prime. Again, this place isn't horrible. It's just simply "Meh. I've experienced better." Hence my rating, since that is exactly how Yelp describes 2-stars. Throw a stone in SF and you have a 50/50 chance of hitting someplace better. I am not a city girl and lately I have felt that I need to leave and go somewhere a little more green and peaceful. As I contemplated moving, my friend made the decision to take me to Progressive Grounds. Just what I needed! They have a great back patio with lots of plants and I was able to read in peace and quiet. I did not get to try their wraps but they have a nice selection of mitchell's ice cream and mint chip was perfect since it was such a beautiful day. I come to this cafe often, as it is one of the only places in the neighborhood with smoothies, so I will grab breakfast and lunch here on my way to work. I am giving the cafe 2 stars as I enjoy the food and the ambiance, but todays visit warranted this review as I was extremely unhappy with how I was treated. My partner and I ordered our drinks and snacks, and she paid. At this point, the guy who runs this place told me that he had something to tell me. He said that the last time I had come in (2 days previous), there was money sitting on the counter when he was ringing me up, and that he picked up the twenty and gave me the change back. He said that this twenty did not belong to me, and that someone had left it there on the counter. I was surprised to hear this, as I thought I had paid for my smoothie fair and square, but it was early and I guess I just assumed I had taken the twenty out of my wallet, when it had actually just been sitting there when I approached the counter. The man who left his twenty on the counter (whom I never saw in the first place) ended up returning after I was gone, and the man who runs the cafe gave him $20. This morning, after hearing all this, and having already paid $14 for our food, I was told that I owe the store $25.50 more -- for the smoothie I had two days previous, as well as the money given to the man who left his twenty on the counter. The issue is how this all was handled. First, if someone leaves around in a public place, is it acceptable for them to expect it be taken care of when they return and it is gone? Second, the store manager made the choice to give this man $20 after he had irresponsibly left it behind, so how is this my responsibility? The manager was defensively telling me that I could watch the security tapes if I wanted to, which I did not have any interest or time for. I believe the story, and paid the $25.50 -- even though I do not think at all that this is the way the situation should have been handled. The good news is -- I will save more than $25.50 by making my smoothies and snacks at home from now on instead of going to Progressive Grounds. They are losing two very regular customers, and that is their loss, not ours. read more

I came here to grab a drink and catch up with a friend. I liked the varied environments: you can sit in the front where its warm, chatty, and bright, or you can sit further back where its warm, quiet, and dark. You can also sit on the porch outside where you can feel the sun and the wind while you gabber. I ordered an iced coffee for $2, great price but awful coffee. The grounds were totally burnt and I ended up adding more cream and sugar than coffee to rescue the gross flavor. That mistake resulted in a stomach ache and I ended up tossing it out. So yeah, passing on the coffee if I return. The setting is unique and pleasant and the menu offers sandwiches, smoothies, beer, and pastries. Service was just okay, it took a while for the workers to acknowledge us and they weren't the friendliest bunch but they got the job done. Overall, thanks to the atmosphere it was a satisfying visit, aside from the burnt coffee. read more

The back room of this café is what makes it exceptional. The acoustics make it a secure multi-party room far from any sounds from the world outside it, including the front room where business is conducted. The back is accessed from the front by means of walking down a long, dark, narrow corridor inclined downward at a slight rate of descent without steps, the kind of connective space Frank Lloyd Wright liked to create in the homes he designed.
