Picked up a Grovel Chief a few weeks back and it's honestly the best board I've ever ridden. Fast and loose, glidey down the line but still skatey and easy to throw around. Holds speed through turns and links sections together effortlessly, even in small gutless surf I wouldn't bother to paddle out in otherwise. I've never had so much fun on a board. Other Proctor reviewers have said they've never surfed better in their lives with Todd's boards, and I can now say with conviction that this is absolutely true. I've heard people talk about "magic" boards before but I've never felt that way about a board until now. This board is a work of art, truly magic. Not only is Todd a master shaper, but he and his wife Charissa are simply awesome people. It's a privilege to know them and to have this amazing board. Thank you both so much! read more

Just a short note to let you know that after a 6-month effort at losing some weight (from 207 lbs to 190 lbs now), I just got back to riding my 6'0" Hideo this past weekend in glassy 2-3 ft surf. Even though it's been years since I last surfed it, the board still feels as fresh and as responsive as it did when I first got it on 11/05/13. Proctor Surfboards: As a lifelong surfer I've ridden a few different boards in my day but it wasn't until a few yrs ago I had a custom board shaped just for me. I was amazed at how well I surfed with my new board, da monsta. I chose this model after speaking with the shaper himself: Todd Proctor, his input was dead on and I couldn't be happier. But what makes Proctor surfboards so special is the unbelievable customer service. Todd & Charissa are incredible team together (you can see why they're husband & wife - a perfect match). But in all honesty the whole Proctor staff treats you as special as pro surfer, they listen carefully & truly care about you & their product. Prices are very high and to be quite honest the product does meet the price point. Unfortunately the service doesn't. Its a shame because I believe that Todd and Charissa are great people and mean well. I'm from Santa Cruz and bought two boards a couple months ago. When I stopped by to pick them up my buddy also bought a board. While we were there I was talking to Todd briefly about pricing. I was inquiring about the price and if it could possibly drop at all over time. (Common with most shapers in the industry) I've been surfing for over 25 years and have gotten boards from several other amazingly talented shapers who have done this with me in the past and presently. Todd nicely said no and that by charging everyone full price it gave him the ability to talk with people and such (you know free him up a bit so that his time is focused on the customer). Immediately after he said this Charissa came rushing over and said, "I got this, Todd you are busy and need to shape. I can handle these questions." Pretty contrasting I thought. I liked the boards. Very light, strong glass job and the shapes were innovative, drivey and loose. Great boards for sure but not necessarily better than anything I've ridden. Although maybe a bit different in a good way. I certainly liked them enough to explore the designs a little further and I wanted to order more on my way back up as did my buddy but they unfortunately Charissa couldn't find the time for us to talk with the Todd. I waited around for over an hour went and got lunch came back and was given the thumbs down and that they were too busy. I received a text from Charissa about another hour later saying they had time if I was still around. I was on schedule (you know wife and kids) to get home so I didn't have two hours to just kick it in Ventura and wait to talk with the shaper. What makes all this ironic is that they are strongly selling that you can talk to your shaper when going with them for custom orders. *Side note* My buddy that bought the board with me busted the fin box while we were south. When we came back up he dropped it off with them so they could fix it with the same resins and materials used to make the boards. He waited months with no response and eventually emailed them and they said it was done and that it was 100 dollars. I happened to be down that way with my family and stopped by to grab it. ended up getting charged 150 dollars. Todd was nice but didn't say much, just small talk. I was half way expecting him to ask how the boards were going or mention that he was sorry he couldn't get to us when we were driving through previously. Ultimately, experienced shapers in general make beautiful products and Im 100% behind paying them what these functional pieces of art are worth. I'm all about American made boards and supporting these craftsmen and helping them make a proper living. All that said they need to raise the bar on surf industry business practices if they want to keep people around. Some people are star struck by these guys and allow themselves to be treated however or others are used to the mediocre service in the surf industry and are numb to it. The Proctors are charging more for a standard poly board than even most of the big brands and I'd like to see the service match it, but sadly after my experience it doesn't and therefore have given them this rating. I do not recommend you go to them. There are a handful of other world class shapers in the area that will stop and talk to you even if they are too busy. Hope this helps read more
