At Tai Kai you leave with so much more. Not only do you get top level training from the original BJJ school in CNY who has the most black belts around, but you also gain a new family, community, a home away from home where everybody knows your name (like Cheers, but without the alcohol). I couldn't be more sincere when I say you earn a new family. And this was evident when my 5 year old son (who also trained at Tai Kai) was diagnosed with brain cancer. Ken, the owner and my friend the past 10 years, put together a fund raiser at the gym to help raise money for my son and the upcoming medical costs. The turnout was huge and was more than I would've ever expected. Ken and everyone else at the gym checks on My son all the time, asking how he's doing and I wish I can bring him into the gym so he could get to see everyone who cares about him. Others had dropped of food for us, donated toys, clothes...etc to help relieve our burden. The 10 years I've spent training Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing, and mma at Tai Kai; the blood and sweat, the physical rigors and soreness from a great workout....it's all been worth it to be able to be part of a family and community that had my back in the most difficult time of me and my family's life. Thank you Ken and Tai Kai for being the best around.

And you'll thank them for it. I've been coming to this location, firmly posted across from Sticky Lip's BBQ's lot, for a few years on-and-off. If my school and work schedule wasn't so sporadic, I'd commit to a full membership instead of paying for one-off classes. There has not been a time I've worked out here and have not felt sore or completely winded. I love it! A lot of people I've asked to join me here have apprehensions because they think they will put on gloves and have to fight someone right away. THAT IS NOT THE CASE. There are several classes where it's simply workouts, conditioning, forms, and basic movements. Let me repeat this: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FIGHT ANYONE. I myself have not sparred, and have only done level 1 and 2 classes and it's just as much physically demanding as you would if you were in the ring. If you're feeling up for it, do it! The coaches here are very accommodating and will guide you through it. Speaking of which, every coach for their classes have their own style and method for having you work out in their classes but they universally all look out for their students' techniques and pushes them to power through. I really appreciate that. I give this place 4 stars because the facility can use some updating. Of course, a worn gym is a used gym, but for being around so long and having a following they could use some new equipment. Also, I frown charging for worn out wrap and glove rentals. I ended up buying my own stuff, but if people are paying to multi-use this equipment, it should be in better shape. Boxing is a sport that is now shadowed in the mainstream by MMA. However, it is still a sport of finesse, nimbleness and strategy. More people should give this place a shot at least once and challenge themselves to see what I mean :)
