I live in Los Banos, but I was visiting Ceres yesterday and decided to make a totally…read moreout-of-the-way stop at Protein House in Modesto. I checked out the menu online beforehand so I'd know exactly what I wanted. Their website is colorful, vibrant, and super easy to read. When I arrived, I was greeted right away with a smile by the female behind the counter. I built my own chicken bowl with the Swole protein portion, brown rice, five different fresh veggies, and added avocado (worth the extra $2.00). I also ordered the Chocolate PB Crush protein shake. They were busy with in-store customers, DoorDash, and online orders, but my food was ready in about 10 minutes. When I got my bowl, I couldn't believe how big it was. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the shake was absolutely to die for. Even my two-year-old loved it - and he's a very picky eater. As an amateur bodybuilder who usually preps all of her own meals, it was such a relief to walk into a place and get a clean, macro-friendly meal without having to cook or bring my own food for the night. This place completely saved me. The environment was great, the bathrooms were clean, and the overall experience was excellent. This will always be a stop for me when I'm in town. Plus, I just found out there's a Turlock location, which is even closer to me in Los Banos - so that's a huge win. Highly recommend!

Last two times have been a huge let down. Again, I am a huge protein house fan and have been to…read moreprobably 10 different of their locations through out AZ, CA, Vegas, KS etc. This franchise is a let down now. I always order my bowl with no sauce and it came SLATHERED in sauce. Next time, paid extra for sweet potatoes and didn't get any. The bowl was SWIMMING in oil and I only ordered white rice and chicken, nothing that should have had oil. I've never seen so much oil in my life, I could seriously swirl it around at the bottom....

While out shopping, we noticed this corner spot called "The Upper Room Kitchen" and decided to…read morecheck it out. We were promptly greeted and sat near a window. The restaurant was decorated in the style of a pub. Our server was very pleasant and answered our questions about the menu. We tried the chips and queso for starters. The cheese was very creamy and tasty. For our main course my wife ordered the Cajun pasta. She really liked the spices in it. I had the garlic shrimp pasta which I found creamy and flavorful. The portions were generous; we even took some home! I will definitely check out some of their other menu items when I'm in the area again. Thanks Upper Room !

Update - 02/12/2026 I brought my mother here for lunch on a…read moreweekday afternoon. We were immediately greeted with a smiling face and lead to our table near the window on the first level. Everything looks the same and the same friendly atmosphere resides. Service is always awesome, and so is the food. This time we both chose the fish and chips lunch which includes 3 good sized pieces of batter dipped fish, and perfectly crispy fries. It was all great. Prior visit - This is a great little place to be for a meal. Totally unassuming from the street and even when you walk up, as it is in a small strip business center off of 11th Street. When I walked in for lunch, I was immediately greeted by a guy behind the bar (which is right at the door) with a smile. I proceeded upstairs to the clean and comfortable 'loft' and grabbed a table along the window so I could see out. The interior is clean and simple, open first floor to second floor ceiling. Great music playing, and just a nice vibe all the way around. Andrea, came by with a smile and greeting, asked if I had any questions, and headed off with my order. I didn't get the bartender's name, but he was just as attentive and super nice, as he came upstairs to my table and described some of the beers he currently has available. Small batch craft beers are good. . . Food: The menu is not so 'typical' as you get to select your protein, the sauce or spice for that protein, then your carb, and your veggie (or make it a salad). Nice choices too. My chicken with Korean BBQ sauce, beer batter fries and grilled Brussels sprouts was good, especially the sprouts. My chicken was on the dry side, but I have a feeling it may have been due to the fact they were managing a party of 15 as well as all the other patrons while I was there. A bit hectic for two people to keep up that pace. I definitely recommend coming to the Upper Room.

Our first time here was to see a band, and of course, we had to get food -- it was delicious! We…read moreshared the regular tri-tip plate and the tri-tip with fries, and everything was cooked perfectly. The bread was amazing too! The second time, we were in Turlock and decided to order ahead for pickup. We got two tri-tip sandwiches with a side of mac and cheese, and it was the perfect amount for our family of four. My kids loved it -- my son was actually obsessed with the tri-tip! Next time, I might just get him his own plate. Both times, the service was friendly and quick. It's definitely a spot worth checking out. Just a little tip -- sometimes the card reader can be finicky, so it's handy to have some cash. Super family-friendly place, and we absolutely love it!

I don't know, maybe I'll give it another chance at some point, but it wasn't for me. I am not…read moresnobby and can get down and dirty with the best of them, but I wasn't expecting everything to be outside and well, so "rustic". We had a little bit of everything food-wise. While everything was decent, our tri-tip was fairly dry, and I didn't find anything special enough to want to drive back out right away. We went on a night with music, and it was pretty packed. Adults, people with little kids, people drinking booze they brought from home, etc. Beers were $1 and $1.50 a can, so I'm guessing that's a huge draw. I do appreciate being able to throw them back without breaking the bank. The band was 3 guys who sorta/kinda knew which keys to play in, but again, not worth the drive. Make sure to wear a LOT of bug spray, consider carpooling with a DD to make parking easier, and plan your bathroom trips early since there is only one sad unisex bathroom inside, and a port-a-potty outside.
