We have been a Prime Landscaping customer for 3 years and we are still a Prime Landscaping customer because of who they are, and what they've done for us over the years. Have we had quality problems - some - but none that they haven't jumped on and solved to our satisfaction. Prime is very good, lawn care company that understands both customer need and expectations. You would, and will be hard pressed to find an alternative to Prime Landscaping for quality, value and responsiveness to problems - which 'are gonna happen' for whatever reason. read more

Our 4 story condo building with underground parking had water leaking into the basement parking area through the wall, especially around a ventilation window well. John David of Prime Landscape Services worked up a plan, over several visits to our site, for us to grade the soil away from the building, install concrete catch basins, repair broken concrete in the patio above part of the garage area, build a concrete curb around the window well, and re-do a flower bed alongside the building where plant irrigation water was draining too close to the building. All the work was done beautifully, John David consulted with us along the way when minor changes were in order, and he and his crew were very professional and easy to work with. OK. Here's my review. Not horrible. Not good. My agreement was motivated by getting an experienced landscape professional to survey our 1/2 acre of land and help us arrest some erosion problems, especially at the back of the property where there lies a steep canyon, emptying into Chaminade territory. Myself and my wife met with John David, owner of Prime Landscape a couple of times prior to signing a contract worth a couple of thousand $ with the following understanding: that his team [John David and assistant] would survey our property and record elevations and vegetation and create a computer file [CAD file] of the survey which we then could take possesion of and use. After the survey, John David would review the survey and recommend a drainage plan, which would become part of the computer survey file. I repeatedly insisted that the final product of our contract would be a computer file which I could read and edit, as needed, in the future. All was agreed. Surveying and revisions ensued. Then came the final reckoning: very unsatisfactory. John David presented us with a computer printed 24" x 36" plan, and PDF which was accurate and contained elevations, etc., as we had expected - yet we did not get the required digital format which we could use, and the final drainage plan was never provided in digital format, contrary to our expectations. John David's assistant, Donna, who prepared the plan could not provide us with a CAD verison which I could use: she only used VectorWorks 2012, [a $1,000 + software cost, at the time] which could only output to VectorWorks version 2008, at the time, and only to industry standard format .dwg versions which were also only 'state of the art' and prohibitively expensive - software export file format verions were never discussed when John David agreed to provide me with the final computer READABLE file, which was the basis of our contract. I assumed 'READABLE' meant by me, for free or at very low cost; John David, probably never spoke to Donna about software details - It never, entered his mind - all he every cared about was the potential $54,000 contract. This company is about sales, not ethics. I eventually found a free conversion program that allowed me to convert VectorWorks 2012 files into industry standard .dwg format - prior to the versions of .dwg that Prime VectorWorks was using could export. Get my drift? It is a bit complicated, and, NO, I did not specify every software compatibility issue into the contract I signed with John David. Shame on me. But, the meat and potatoes - the solution to my drainage problem, which was John David's analysis of all of this - was only ever finally scribbled onto tissue paper overlay, not even vellum, which would have been thick enough for FedEx, now 4 years later, to copy - still, in 2017 - 4 years later - I can't copy John Davids crayon-on-tissue-paper (weaker than vellum) "solution" to my drainage problms only because the thickness of John David's final drainage plan is so fragile that it cannot be easily copied. John's final comment was: "this is the only way I've ever done it" I can't really blame him for that. This guy is so old school! I doubt if he even knows how to do email or answer a voice mail. I blame myself for not going into deeper detail about .dwg, .vwx file versions which their version of VectorWorks would export. I assumed he was a decent human being who understood compatibility issues and would have naturally warned me, out of the goodness of another human heart, if there would be an additional cost of $1000+ for me to read the data he provided, per contract. As I later learned, John David seems to have satisfied the letter of our contract, but not the spirit and nobody on the side of Prime Landscape seemed to care or try to rectify this problem. Oh, the bottom line is that the cost of the work which Prime Landscape might have provided, based on the survey of our property was in the neighborhood of $54,000. Now it is 2017 and I still need landscaping work done, but can't afford $54,000, which was inflated from the get-go. Yet I only have a half-baked drainage plan, which our current landscaper insists on seeing. Yet he takes two weeks to respond to a single email or phone message, or 2 days to respond to a text. I can't give him a digital copy of our plan since it cost me around $2000 for the piece of sh*t and Prime Landscape only left me with a crayon / pencil on tissue paper overlay of the lot plan, which FedEx cannot copy without tearing it all to shreds. So that is why I give Prime 2 stars: they left me with tissue paper and crayon as a solution instead of vellum - which might have cost a couple dollars more, or digital - which is what I thought our contract had required - yet they were after a $54,000 contract for future work - that is all that mattered to them - not interested in honor. read more

I hired Prime to landscape approx. 5,000sf of backyard space. After several design plans we finally agreed on a $35k plan. The actual layout is pretty good and that's why I'm giving them 1 star instead of no stars. Within 6 months nearly 30% of the plants it purchased died. Donna and John said if I had hired them to maintain the yard that wouldn't have happened. Donna said the 5 Rhodies died because I didn't dead head them. I explained there was nothing to dead head because they never flowered. Over a dozen star jasmine died. I had asked for a succulent garden. What I got was a straight line against the curb thus they needed to replant them. Within 2 years the entire irrigation had to be replaced. Both valves failed and a crack was discovered in a main water line they installed. Not every plant had a dripper even though I had asked them to check. Later I discovered many plants did not have a dripper but those that did ALL had the same volume even though not all required the same amount of water. Water lines extended nowhere and just ended with no plants in sight. I could go on and on but I wont. Needless to say John, Donna and the rest of the company did not handle a pretty simple job. We hired them to redo our landscape lighting, minor plantings, and irrigation. After some minor problems, the lighting has worked out fine. The irrigation is another story. We knew we had problems which is why we hired them. We have a very large area that had mostly sprays and very little drip. They insisted that they should never be on the same lines. Guess what! That's how they replaced it. A mixture of drip with sprays. exactly what they told us was wrong. Two broken lines later and much water lost, I sent pictures. The owner called the drip lines "inferior quality". I said YOUR COMPANY installed it. How do you think I felt after paying $37,000.00 for the work. When I asked where the print out was of the stations and valves, the owner answered " I can't do that, that's too much work!" I told him I wasn't paying the final payment until I got it. Well, I got a substandard list with little detail and incorrect info. Really? Then, to top it off, I advised the owner that his staff drank all the beer we had in our outdoor kitchen. He responded " that's tacky" . I told him I'd hardly call it tacky- I call it unprofessional. I would not use them again and I would not recommend them. They are very expensive for what you actually get, and I spent much of my own time cleaning up and repairing their mistakes. I spent two days just cleaning up water breaks. read more

Prime Landscape Services just finished our new backyard and we couldn't be happier! From my first meeting with John David, one of the owners, I could tell the level of service and attention to detail was going to be top notch. They were a little more expensive the other bid I got, but more was included, especially nice little touches like staining the existing concrete that the other company didn't even bring up. All the guys were great to work with. There was a lot going on, from concrete and setting flagstone to installing a new lawn, arbor, lighting and irrigation. Friends and family love it, and many of John and Donna's recommendations really made a difference. Super helpful, professional and top notch quality. My highest recommendation! read more

If you have a large landscape to do, this is probably your company. They were kind enough to follow up with a call and appointment, and even offered some advice on what to do with our landscape, but didn't even bother with a quote because we weren't interested in pouring a slab or other costly work. We were looking for a eco friendly landscape for a relatively small front yard. For someone recommended by the City of Santa Cruz website, I would have expected more. read more

After reading some of the previous reviews regarding Prime Landscape, I felt I had to share my own experiences with them. John and his crew have been providing both landscape design and monthly maintenance for our property since 2005. (In 2005 they provided and executed a landscape design that received recognition from their peers and of which I am extremely pleased.) They have been extraordinarily professional with accurate price estimations and consistent high quality service. When we have a problem, they are quick to address it to my great satisfaction. They may be a bit more expensive than some of their competitors, but you get what you pay for. I have recommended John to my neighbors and they have be very pleased with his work as well.
